hey guys, quick question, if I want to create a link between classes of animals (e.g. mammals, reptiles, birds, etc.) and individual animal species, knowing that an animal can only be part of one class, but one class can have many animals
can I use a composite foreign key in the Animal table consisting of AnimalId and ClassId so I can create a one-to-many relationship from Class to Animal?
or would a many-to-many table still be necessary here

@JansthcirlU If one animal can only be part of one class, ClassId should suffice as FK.

oh right, a simple one-to-many relationship then
I think my example wasn't good enough, I have a problem where I want to convert a many-to-many table to a one-to-many table but I'll have another think first

@JansthcirlU Use a fiddle to build an example

@McNets thanks for the link, but I'm personally using Entity Framework Core which generates the SQL for me (as a result I'm not well versed in SQL myself)

@billinkc you know it!
@JansthcirlU do yourself and your DBA a favor and learn SQL.

12:52 PM
unfortunately we're a very small team of junior devs so there's no real DBA :p
but you're right, I should learn SQL in case Entity Framework Core doesn't give me the desired results

@JansthcirlU you should take care with EF default behavior.

more often than not, it'll cause issues that you can never surface without major redesign down the road when it's no longer green-field development and your team is in no position to remediate.
Am I bitter? Why, no, what ever would make you say that, lol.

EF works alright if you map everything to stored procedures and views. Everything else, not so much.

When I was first starting out in Windows GUI programming, if someone had just told me to always, always subclass every control before you put it on a form... Now with databases - always, always go through a view or a proc...

Q: which is considered as Basic SQL

Arcanis - The Omnipotentwhich is considered as Basic SQL : I have read the help of the site mainly this: https://dba.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic and it is not clear to me: can they exemplify? for example I want to ask a question about a query that I really consider to be basic, but I am almost sure that the solution...
