hey guys, quick question, if I want to create a link between classes of animals (e.g. mammals, reptiles, birds, etc.) and individual animal species, knowing that an animal can only be part of one class, but one class can have many animals

can I use a composite foreign key in the Animal table consisting of AnimalId and ClassId so I can create a one-to-many relationship from Class to Animal?

or would a many-to-many table still be necessary here

I think my example wasn't good enough, I have a problem where I want to convert a many-to-many table to a one-to-many table but I'll have another think first

@McNets thanks for the link, but I'm personally using Entity Framework Core which generates the SQL for me (as a result I'm not well versed in SQL myself)

unfortunately we're a very small team of junior devs so there's no real DBA :p

but you're right, I should learn SQL in case Entity Framework Core doesn't give me the desired results

more often than not, it'll cause issues that you can never surface without major redesign down the road when it's no longer green-field development and your team is in no position to remediate.

EF works alright if you map everything to stored procedures and views. Everything else, not so much.
