@bbaird I agree, sometimes that is all you need, maybe just add some different indexes, and different queries. But I've also wished I had a separate simpler dimensional models of some parts of my old OLTP systems back then that had very complicated entity models to make some of those queries a lot easier and a lot faster.

@Vérace So my guess is the answer lies in figuring out for a collection of a certain size and a certain number of elements, how many permutations satisfy the n <= n+1 element requirement.
Permutation isn't the right word, that has a specific meaning in combinatorics.

@bbaird yeah, more likely combinations.
putting N indistinguishable objects into M distinguishable buckets

Morning

@Vérace My try. SQL Server, not Postgres, but near enough. You did say there's bottle of Middleton for the first answer, didn't you? :-)
Good morning all.

@MichaelGreen There was mention of a bet by me, but I distinctly remember putting the work "gentelmen's" in front of it! Deleted by the demon moderator from hell... err, I mean, our lovely mod crew here on the Heap! So, sorry, no bottle of Middleton's winging its way to Oz today...

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Very interesting indeed. I wonder have Google provided any funding to the PostgreSQL Global Development Group - and also, have Amazon with their Babelfish project? The latter is still in "coming soon" mode - and I'm willing to bet (gentelmen's) that it will not appear by the end of the year!
@Vérace That's an unusual definition of deleted you have there

4:41 PM
@PaulWhite was there some other comment that was deleted? Something to do with a bottle fo Middleton?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ No - the only person who mentioned Middleton was @MichaelGreen - I offered a "gentlemen's" bet - but that comment appears to have disappeared!

It's literally right there just above
Nothing else deleted I can see

@PaulWhite So, I made a typo - the fact is that I made reference to a gentlemen's bet (spelling OK?)...

I think you're simply misremembering

@PaulWhite Nope. It's not. I made reference to the gentlemen's bet before @MichaelGreen sneakily ( :-) ) tried to claim a bottle of whiskey from me - when no such offer was on the table! However, the original reference appears to have gone missing! If I'm misremembering, how come MG "thought" there was an offer on the table?

4:46 PM
I don't know what else to do but show you the only message where you've used that phrase
Michael Green was pulling your leg

Well, I'll ask @MichaelGreen - did I make some sort of offer of a bet (of whatever nature) to which you responded by requesting a bottle of whiskey? However, on your side of the world, any sensible person would be in bed! :-)

@Vérace what is that side, the dark side of the moon?

Antipodes - where they walk on their heads!

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Not that I can see, and I went quite a few days back.
There's just this @Vérace:

I remembered it not because of the spelling error, but because of the parentheses after the bet.

5:05 PM
Yes, I see. That was on a different discussion, so it must be Michael pulling Verace's leg.

That's my guess yeah. Or a double-mis-remembering perhaps.

Or he did make the offer but drunk the wine in between. That would explain not remembering as well ;)

It's kinda funny because they make wine in Australia but a company with a similar name makes Whiskey in Ireland.

(jeagl on the linked video, taken from an old Greek movie from the 50s):
The dunken guy keeps repeating: "What you said to me, why did you had to say it to me?"
Until the final words with the policeman who asks: "So what did he say to you?"
"I can't remember, but why did he say that to me?"

Midleton Very Rare is a premium Irish whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at the New Midleton Distillery, in the East Cork town of Midleton, from which it gets its name. A non-age statement whiskey, containing a mix of pot still and grain whiskeys, it is matured for about twelve to twenty years in ex-bourbon American Oak barrels. One of the most expensive whiskeys regularly produced by Irish Distillers, since its launch in 1984, Midleton Very Rare has frequently been the recipient of strong reviews and awards. Each year, a new bottling is specially created by the Master Distiller at the Midleton...
Anyway, I'll add the inevitable mea culpa to my collection in due course.
I'll soon have enough to redecorate the spare room.
On a different note, it is nice to have the warmer weather, but why are mosquitoes still a thing?

5:36 PM
@PaulWhite It's weird, but I was thankful for the drought we had this summer because it kept the mosquitos down
Overrated 1/10, do not like

Yeah we've had quite a wet Spring
Not massively so, just a bit more than average
Enough to top the hydro lakes up
Maybe mosquitoes perform some vital function. I wouldn't miss them.

@PaulWhite They only really function as bat food and disease vectors as far as I can tell

🤔 maybe I should get some bats

When I lived next to a slow-moving creek, I actually never got bit by mosquitoes since we had a fairly large bat colony in the neighborhood.
I've been trying to find a good place to put one up in our yard, but might need to convince the neighbor to let me use his taller & straighter oak tree (ours gets a bit busy after about 10 feet)

6:19 PM
Interesting
