Morning
I think I've just gone off reviewing.
My eyes hurt
Paul White
8:50 AM
Yeah it seems more difficult now for sure
Colin 't Hart
9:29 AM
I use two monitors and I now do my reviewing on the right one. It places the question and answer more central, with the "action box" to the right.
Works better
1 hour later…

10:40 AM
Can we have the old one back?
John K. N.
10:55 AM
@Colin'tHart

@JohnK.N. it's super annoying
you have the feeling of looking left right everywhere
and then when you click close the old popup is there anyway
billinkc
Assuming there's a right to left variant of the SE network, I wonder if the review queue is less obnoxious for them

Good morning
John K. N.
Has anyone ever played with SQL Server Power BI? Requirements?
Lamak
4:03 PM
SQL Server Power BI?
John K. N.
@Lamak Thank you
But yes.
Lamak
what? I'm kinda lost lol
John K. N.
Me too
Lamak
but, but....
John K. N.
I was on powerbi.microsoft.com today and thought I'd figured out what I need:
- SQL Server
- SSRS
- SSAS
- Power BI Desktop
Lamak
4:10 PM
ok
John K. N.
But.
I'm not sure
Lamak
what do you need to do?
John K. N.
Me? Nothing.
I'm just the person researching.
Then along comes a guy and says we need SQL Server Enterprise Editoin
Me: <research> Finds nothing.
bbaird
Are they getting a cut of the licensing costs?
John K. N.
No.
Lamak
4:11 PM
ok, but "you guys" need that for what?
John K. N.
Internal co-worker
Analysing and displaying our Service Requests and Incidents in a nice graphical interface.
Lamak
ok, Power BI Desktop is the designer
John K. N.
You see, he did a course in February and the teacher told them it's free. (kind of).
Lamak
and can connect to multiple data sources
that much is free, correct
you can then upload that report to the Power BI Service. For that, you just need a valid microsoft account
that much is also free
John K. N.
But you need SSAS for some things and then it depends what some-things you need, as they differ from Standad to Enterprise Edition.
Lamak
4:14 PM
not really, no such need for SSAS, unless something specifically for you
John K. N.
@Lamak Yes, there are a lot of
free
buttons on the
powerbi.microsoft.com
site.
Lamak
once the report is in the Power BI Service, you can access to it privately on your browser/mobile app
John K. N.
ok
Lamak
big point in "you"
if you need someone else to see that report is when licensing starts to matter
John K. N.
microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-business-intelligence
Watch Modern BI capabilities in Power BI Report Server and Analysis Services
I'm ok with instaling SSRS and SSAS, but when it comes to Power BI I'm a newbie.
Lamak
4:17 PM
but you don't need to lol
just go with me
where do you have your data
?
John K. N.
On site in a SQL Server instance's database.
Standard Edition.
SSRS not yet installed.
SSAS not installed.
Let's call it ServiceDesk
Lamak
ok
that's more than enough, no need for SSRS nor SSAS
period, your coworker is wrong
John K. N.
I assumed as much.
But this guy was in a (Microsoft) course and the trainer said:
You need Enterprise Edition and SSAS.
So our guy is hooked on the bling-bling reports and shiny new interfaces.
Lamak
I am a microsoft certified trainer
2
John K. N.
Cool.
billinkc
4:22 PM
Well, certified is accurate
Lamak
and I teach about it in post graduate courses
John K. N.
@Lamak Thanks for that.
I'll go with that then and see why our guy needs Enterprise Edition.
mentally pins Lamak's name to Microsoft Certified Trainer and BI
billinkc
Use a 40 penny nail to physically pin it
Lamak
lol
