@Vérace I can't see anything in your answer that conflicts. I was replying to your chat an reinforcing the point that the DBMS doesn't just happen to start a Tx because it feels like it, it starts one because it must to guarantee atomicity.

@MichaelGreen I can't see anything in your answer that conflicts. I was replying to your chat an reinforcing the point that the DBMS doesn't just happen to start a Tx because it feels like it, it starts one because it must to guarantee atomicity. - I missed this earlier - yes, you're correct and it's a good point. It's amazing how many misconceptions there are around the whole area - when I think back to my early database self, I shudder! My favourite misconception is this:
I used to think that for any computer, RAM was king - when, if you're running an RDBMS, it's the disk subsystem!....

@Vérace It's a shame Scott Adams turned into a weird men's rights/Trumper hybrid, but that cartoon really should be updated to replace "database" with "data lake" given current trends
@PaulWhite Welcome back, Paul

yeah, the guy got so freaking weird

Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing fine. I just noticed an issue with my profile page, it says "You have not participated in any tags" and the corresponding tag punctuations have disappeared... does anyone know what may be causing that? Thanks.

@MDCCL looking into it now
nice to see you, btw!

7:46 PM
@MDCCL - could it be related to the fact that you haven't posted an answer in over a year?
@MDCCL - more's the pity BTW...
@MichaelGreen Maybe it's an erroneous impression, but I get the feeling that many of these so-called in-memory systems are increasingly offering disk spillover strategies - I'd be very chary of a db that was only in-memory.
@bbaird It's a shame Scott Adams turned into a weird men's rights/Trumper hybrid" - weird stuff about Republicans being "hunted..." - not sure what he's said about men's rights - any links?

@Vérace You'd just have to skim his social media - a lot of "men today are so feminine , women want x y z blah blah". Maybe more anti-feminist right wing screeching.

@MaxVernon Thank you.
@MaxVernon Nice to see you too, and congratulations on becoming a moderator!
@Vérace Might be related, but I believe the tag punctuations encompass the upvotes from the answers posted during the whole period in which a user has been a member, though I'm not sure...
I just realized that "punctuation" does not seem to be used in English as I thought, so... I was talking about the fact that my tag scores have disappeared
My meta profile seems to be displaying the respective tag scores correctly, btw

@MDCCL thank you! We miss you here, by the way. You've been a very valuable participant :-)
@jcolebrand created a meta question about it here - we're waiting for confirmation from the Stack Overflow team.

After considering various possibilities, I genuinely thought it was just a typo. But yes, failing to move forward with time is a valid reason to make that kind of mistake as well. I sometimes forget which year it is too.
That last year seemed very long
