@ypercubeᵀᴹ if you hadn't yet, let me suggest The Queen's Gambit

2 hours later…
3:12 AM
Wife is watching it right now (well, restarted as she fell asleep while I took the dog walking) but seems good from what I've caught

4 hours later…
6:56 AM
@MaxVernon I'll turn the comment into an answer if my guess is right and I'm on an actual computer
Oh didn't notice it was such an old question

7:20 AM
Morning
again still

7:47 AM
Morning

Morning

8:39 AM
@McNets thnx, it's on my list

8:55 AM
@McNets Thanks, added as well

Sorry @TomV, @billinkc, my suggestion was for everyone

2 hours later…
10:30 AM
@TomV thanks - it needs sn answer!

10:40 AM
@MaxVernon It has one now!

@TomV cheers!

Hmm, I thought there was a badge for answering an old question. Must have been a hat then

You need +2 (revival, 30 days) or +5 (necromancer, 60 days)
and to wait for the badge awarding job to get around to it

10:56 AM
So much impatience these days

It's a virus

ah yes I overlooked it
Not that I really care about actually obtaining the badge, rather I was wondering which one it was

I answered the question to give Max a sense of authority after he demanded and answer

well you wouldn't want him to remove your room owner status

11:03 AM
Can't be trusted

power corrupts
so I hear
@TomV your badge has arrived!
wear it with pride

it's my 10th revival badge apparently

indeed.

I'm so proud, I should call my mom to tell her

Explains why Tom wanted it so badly, that's a nice round number

11:10 AM
I wonder who has the most
probably aaron

I think Max went on an old question spree a few years ago when he wanted his SQL 2000 gold badge or something

heh
oh ha ha I just checked on SEDE and it's me (63)

Hi Paul,
select ascii('ä' collate SQL_Scandinavian_Pref_CP850_CI_AS), ascii('ä' collate Finnish_Swedish_CI_AS)
select ascii('a' collate SQL_Scandinavian_Pref_CP850_CI_AS), ascii('a' collate Finnish_Swedish_CI_AS)

ascii values differing for special chars

yeah

is there could be any other mechanism through which this could be achieved...like capturing the data using CDC and transfter them through SSIS packages

Q: Changing collation of SQL Database in Production environment to minimize downtime

Murali Dhar DarshanWe have a scenario in which we want to change the collation of our production database (including columns) from SQL_Scandinavian_Pref_CP850_CI_AS to Finnish_Swedish_CI_AS. We have developed scripts to do that. But executing this script in a large database of size more than 100GB will take conside...

Yes...talking about the same issue.

I added it so others could see the context

Yes, Thank you :)

@MuraliDharDarshan I doubt it, but it's not my expert area. You might have to translate the mismatched characters manually.

What could Solomon possibly be doing that he hasn't written a 20,000 character answer to that question by now?
3

11:21 AM
There's a generic 'best fit' algorithm that attempts to match appearance because it's just not feasible to map characters from every collation to every other that would need it.

@JoshDarnell 😂

@JoshDarnell Probably scared off by the replication element idk

@AndriyM youth!

Apart from replication, if there could be any other mechanism competent enough to provide data may be on daily basis, then also we can think about that...

I get the feeling what you want to do can't be done automatically
Due to the lack of a mapping
Strings can be a pain, just like dates, times, and pretty much everything else

11:27 AM
@PaulWhite you ! 63 revivals

Solomon's usually pretty hot on the questions so I guess he has nothing of interest to say about it?

Max 58
Rolando 40
Solomon 32

oh ha ha I just checked on SEDE and it's me (63)
That does seem like a lot seeing as I don't really answer all that many questions.
Clearly I dwell on the sea floor.
Feeding on old scraps.

Must be causing you so much pressure

You have no idea
❌👁‍🗨🦌

11:32 AM
Nice, though doesn't work as well with a rhotic accent

blame Unicode mapping

11:49 AM
We moved to the cloud. No one told us there was storm coming...

well every cloud is seeded with silver
or something

12:14 PM
@PaulWhite data is a pain if you don't leave it with its preferred collation

12:27 PM
@Johnakahot2use jollborked

12:54 PM
@TomV h/t lol

Hi Paul, I discovered one scenario and I think that could be used as a solution to our problem.

I have posted that scenario as an answer to this question
Thank you for your help :)
Thank you guys :)

1:54 PM
Tired @PaulWhite ?
;-)

2:09 PM
if anyone has a chance, I'd appreciate a quick look at this answer about why you should always specify a schema. The question is from a while back, so I don't expect the OP will benefit much from my answer, but new users hopefully will.

@Johnakahot2use I'm sure he encountered that answer from the review queue :)
I voted to delete.
I see Max has now "voted" as well 😀

@JoshDarnell blatant plagiarism lol

Yeah, but the effort put into the lost cause....
:-)

@MaxVernon I think your answer is good. Seems like there should be a dupe around for that question though.

@JoshDarnell probably more than one. The OP seems to be focused on it being more flexible to omit the schema.

2:21 PM
True. It's not exactly asking "should you always specify schema" although I think the answer to that answers the OP.

I'll be back in a bit, right now I have real work calling.

@MaxVernon Real work? I'm unfamiliar with the concept.

lol
as DBAs we try to do as little of that as possible. It goes against the grain.

Also congrats on your election

thanks!

2:26 PM
@MaxVernon I followed the yellow brick road and left a comment on that one under the question.
However, good argumentation.

1 hour later…
3:46 PM
Have I complained about timezones yet?

4:04 PM
no, but you should

4:18 PM
more specifically time zone handling in javascript
It has drawn all my energy today, I don't even feel like ranting about it anymore
Mar 4 at 8:03, by Tom V - try topanswers.xyz
Time zones are still hard :(

Are you sure your problem is timezones and not javascript generally?

likely
and all the implementation differences between JavaScript and JavaScript

JS makes me want to smash my head against a wall. That's why I never do anything with it.
that and any and all other untyped languages
OPTION EXPLICT ON lol, and strict, for that matter

I think my head just hurts on the terrible syntax/awful number of libraries.

I'm looking at a job that takes a couple of COPY_ONLY backups, then sends an email to IT folks. It has a WAITFOR DELAY 00:15:47; just prior to sending the email.
I automated the taking of backups and sending of the email so that DBAs wouldn't need to bill for 3 hours of overtime for nothing. I suspect the 15:47 might be to make it look like they were actually doing something so they can still bill for it.
(I didn't add the WAITFOR, lol)

4:29 PM
Meh, just import the Alexandria library which in turn imports every other JS library and you're set.

that's what I like about you Bill. You think outside the box.

I'm intrigued by waiting 15 minutes and 47 seconds

me too. I wonder what the 47 seconds is about

Do they bill in 15 minute increments?

try again lol. 3 hours or nothing.
I really don't get it

4:31 PM
Oh, wow. Good on them for getting that added into the contract
Bad on them for abusing it of course

yah... I'm a lowly contractor, so I don't get that bonus.
I bill for time.
the union folks love me

I doubt your dogs even love you. (I think you're a cat person but we know cats love no one but themselves)

my dogs are at my feet right now :-D
actually, they were, they seem to have abandoned me. traitors.

Dogs also roll in poop so uhhh that can be a sign to the contrary

4:39 PM
lol where did you get that video of @jcolebrand !

Off the interwebs

5:08 PM
I once got a call from a recruiter. A very nice lady offering me a full time Javascript job. I said no thanks and she must have noticed something in my voice. She asked "why is that? I'm asking an honest question I only read the words on the job description and don't really know what it means". I told her I value my sanity to work with Javascript every day
I could hear her wondering "maybe that's why all the decent candidates turn me down and have to suppress their laugh"

5:21 PM
sometimes I feel for recruiters. Not often, mind you.

5:50 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ @Johnakahot2use mandalorian SE2 started

@TomV OH MY GOD. /turns on Disney+
that is such an exciting intro

6:09 PM
Govt is holding a press conference
full lockdown

we just had our daily case load double in one day. scary times.

Things are bonkers here. Multiple days with 2000+ new cases

new hospital admissions:

oof

one of our friends is an emerg room doctor here. They just told us it's 10 times worse than the media reports.
no beds anywhere

6:14 PM
Friend of mine's wife has cancer
they're postponing her (and other patients) treatment to keep beds free

wow that's hard

I'm no doctor, I can believe that can perfectly be delayed a couple of weeks from a medical standpoint. There just isn't a way to tell that to the affected people in a compassionate way

@MaxVernon That's pretty much the norm in Canada with or without SARS, no?

it's so hard to tell what 4 weeks of waiting will do. Could be the difference between stage 3 and stage 4
@mustaccio hahah. No, we normally have a well-functioning medical care system.

Thing is, in March we couldn't blame anyone. It was unexpected and nobody was prepared. This time we have had 6 months to prepare and I fully blame both the folks who didn't care but especially politicians

6:17 PM
agreed 1000%

Can you believe they (government) reduced testing capacity just a month ago

I envy you in your Canada. In our Canada the picture is somewhat different

so many 20 to 30 year olds here just going out and doing whatever they want with utter disregard
@mustaccio I didn't realize you're in TO lol
the center of the universe

This pandemic has me hating people with a passion. STAY HOME. WEAR A MASK. The whole thing has short circuited people's ability to measure risk vs reward.

yep

6:20 PM
We had so much excess capacity in tests according to our politicians that my dad who works in a nursing home got tested (along with everybody else in the home) and it took 10 days to get the results

TEN DAYS
what the actual eff

a whole floor could've been wiped out in 10 days

no kidding
I mean you don't need to be an epidemiologist to know that.

@bbaird Nah, you're misunderstanding the Nazi Mindset. Especially the American Nazi Mindset. When Hitler said Uber Alles, he meant Me Over All not Us Over All. American Nazis have absolutely taken that to heart, but it appears the rest of the world has some of their own nationalists also doing the same :-(
I know too many of the American kind that truly hold some of these horrendous views, and they are the anti-mask crowd. Anti-vax as often as not too
I have not yet met one empathetic anti-masker
@TomV seems like in ten days you have the result for sure ...

I think many young people are actually truly of the mindset that this only affects old white men, and old white men are expendable now.
"if we kill off a few old people who cares"

6:23 PM
@jcolebrand not everybody gets symptoms, but yeah most will have found out by that time

@MaxVernon Interesting. I haven't come across any young people who think that way. Granted, my window of young people is small.
@TomV yah that's what I meant lol. And you could have been asympt and still spread in those 10 days

@jcolebrand it's not just young people either I guess. There are quite a few people who just don't care at all what happens to anyone else. It's so short sighted.

@jcolebrand Trust me, I know how much of the disregard for masks comes from racist, fascist conspiracy nuts. But there are a lot of younger people who aren't taking it seriously.

@jcolebrand Yeah, not this time, but the initial wave literally had whole floors wiped out at once by 1 spreader in the nursing home where he works

I loved Fear the Walking Dead for how it shows what happens when everyone loses their shit.

6:28 PM
@bbaird I've also found those to be the children of the first group
I agree 100% with what y'all are saying
I don't know that anyone else grew up in a fundy cult-like area like I did, where hatred of Others is so insidious but so baked-in
Here's a fun story: My dad bought some rental units in around 2002 when that was a booming period. I ask him about how that's going about 2 years ago. "Well son, it's been hard with so many folks out of work, they can't make rent. I had to start renting to the blacks because at least they get that government check." When I called him out as being racist "I can't be racist son, I'm a Christian"

@jcolebrand I don't live in texas, I've seen people not wearing masks, or ostentatiously wearing it only half covering their face or under their chin from all parts of society, but yes especially youngsters who want to look "cool"

It's so baked-in they can't see it. This was what I was steeped in as a growing human being. I know what casual evil looks like and how to listen to the people who are from these rural areas with no empathy
@TomV Oh, I watched a mother and daughter pair walk into Home Depot wearing lace masks. I could see their lipstick and teeth quite clearly.

can't say they are mostly nationalists over here, just a bunch of kids not wanting to look uncool

@TomV This wasn't just in Texas.
Fun fact: I've only lived in Texas a total of 15 years, and this particular pass I'm at 8 years and 2 weeks.
So the other 26 years of my life were not-in-TX and people can't ever remember where I grew up :D
I would say all this political chat is depressing or that we should keep politics out of it, but as what are statistically mostly only middle aged white men in this room, we are the very group that have to talk about it, statistically speaking, because the people we interact with need us to drive change.

I mean, ineurope there are a lot less redneck type folks but just as many people who fuck around without masks

6:33 PM
The fact that Poland just passed some very anti-women laws, and that the US is on the same path, is problematic. My friends in rural Russia, Australia, France tell me the same stories.

France is moving towards the centre yes, but it comes from a start so far down the left most in the US would call it communist

@TomV Yeah but the level of self-obsessed personal-privilege self-exceptionalism is probably not nearly as high as it in the US
I have hope Tom, that most of your countrymen will learn and do better.

I'm not sure

Unfortunately Trump is a sign of a planetary cancer, and not the creator of one. He's just the thing that makes you go to the doctor to find out why you have a pain.

We have different politics maybe, but just as many idiots

6:36 PM
By the time you do that, you are usually at stage 3 or stage 4 cancer, and that takes a lot of heavy medicine to fix
Or you die
@TomV At a human level, we have the same political problems. The names may be different, the amounts of funding involved may be different, but we have the same problems. We both have large groups of people who are ANGRY that there are others around them that they don't approve of being allowed to just exist.
In my case it's about 1/3 of my country
And the worst part is it's a learned behavior.
With that, I'm gonna go get lunch

@jcolebrand That's a really good point
My sister in law is black, so my brothers kids are somewhat coffee+milk
the oldest is 7 and goes toe a running club where another kid told her "you stink cause you're black"
that's just something her parents say, she didn't invent that on her own. Most of the kids that age don't see the difference in skin color

6:55 PM
@TomV for sure.

7:13 PM
I love that the Speeder Bike sounds like a Harley Davidson as its driving up the "main street" of that town on Tatooine.

@jcolebrand I now have a quest to watch for this but yes, have anecdotally observed the same

I think the expanse is due for a new season pretty soon too

@MaxVernon we're reaching 10k a day at 8 Mio population here in Switzerland

@Johnakahot2use wow that's a lot

and no lockdown

7:25 PM
we have a weird lokdown now

However, hospital cases are lagging behind.
They reckon another 7 days and then all hospitals will be full in Switzerland with Covid cases.
I've been sent into home office for the next four weeks.
Switzerland is no longer issuing quarantine for foreigners. Free entry for nearly all. I mean who wants to come here now? Switzerland is topping the charts nearly.

Here you can go to work but, you cannot move to the next region from monday to friday, and during weekend you cannot go out of your city/village
I'm WFH right now
And curfew from 22 to 6

I've been lucky that I've been working from home since March 20th.

Woah @TomV. Stay safe and healthy.
@MaxVernon Good news.

7:32 PM
I'm so lucky
@Johnakahot2use is that case rate per 1000 people or something?

100,000 ?

I went to the office for the first time yesterday since March
And that was to take my personal effects to my car
I have about 2 more boxes to go and take off my desk/from my drawers
I only did yesterday because I happened to be driving right past the office

Our office (13 people) went remote for all early in March but they wanted to start having normalcy around May? so they had staggered the seating so no one that was adjacent to you was in on the same day. I gave it a few weeks, even started riding my bike to work as the roads had way less traffic on them
But, I talked with the CEO and said, I appreciate the desire but I am not comfortable with the behavior I see in my fellow coworkers with regard to mask wearing. For those with offices, sure maybe they can sit without a mask on but those in the open seating... the risk to reward seemed to weigh heavily on the risk side

no doubt.
what did they say?

Other developers had already said Nope so I wasn't some brave trailblazer but I did try to do as they asked but since then, my butt's been firmly in my house

7:42 PM
excellent

He was cool, understood it wasn't looking to make people be in an unsafe environment (for all the shit I may ever talk, at their heart they want to do the right thing for both the people and the company so good on them)

👍

One of the guys in the other room (deal makers) came down with C19 this week (he'd be a go to the office person) and they've shut the office down for 2 weeks to try and clean/do whatever.
Been on vacation this week so I've missed the majority of the details but what's the phrase, "statistics are numbers until it's personal?" Well, I guess I knew a person in the SQL Server community that passed away earlier this summer from it as well

@MaxVernon per million

cheers

7:52 PM
Okay ... while I may not have a problem discussing politics for the most part, the fact that there's a Politics and that people are flagging things in their chats this weekend is ...
That's a thing I'm gonna keep a 10' pole's worth away from.
@billinkc i have never heard this but I like it

Ah, a quote attributed to Stalin "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic"
