Last I looked, there were two (plus community managers) but they’re not moderating posts about the current situation

There were four community mods on meta, but JourneymanGeek stepped down during this crisis, and Monica was the other one.

A: Why are the Code of Conduct changes received so negatively, and what can / could have been done to change that?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ I can’t wait for Picard
“ It's not about "your" pronouns. If I say a word it's my word, not yours. Xe, hir, etc. are not my pronouns. Again, you get to be called whatever you want. That's your name. No one is entitled to insert their new words into my vocabulary. You can want it. You have your reasons. I understand that. But you are not entitled to it.”
I agree with that. The one trans person I know IRL, who is really good friends with my partner, gets misgendered once in a while. She doesn’t let it phase her, people make mistakes, just deal with it and move on.
A wiki page that lists the new pronouns means absolutely nothing, as there is no context as to when to use them en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:List_of_protologisms/… because it’s what people want to be referred to by, rather than something that actually has a logical basis. I will use someone’s name happily
I get that some people are neutral, but we already have English words to deal with that
Dunno why I’m wittering on about this, it’s such a tiny percentage of the user base that I doubt I’ll ever encounter anyone that identifies with new pronouns, and even then i probably won’t have the knowledge to engage in the first place
Which does make me wonder how prevalent this sort of thing is, and whether it ever needed dealing with in the first place

@Philᵀᴹ it's sometimes hard to flex ally status as a hetero cisgender wasp, and i've pretty actively excluded myself from a lot of the discussion, but i think i'm in kind of the same headspace as you. where "no, it didn't need dealing with" but also "yea, it probably did need dealing with - but absolutely not in this way"
like - i don't expect that oppressed minorities will ever be "not-oppressed", it's a shitty fact of life that people who live outside the first standard deviation of normalcy are gonna get shit on unfairly. and i think the SE staff wanted to make a "big move" to shake up where the bell curve is to help that
ironically though, they pulled a super polarising move that prompted people who mostly agree with each other to get in flame wars about semantics and edge case "what if"s. admittedly sysadmins, CS majors, and well akshuwallee webizens are the most vulnerable to that kind of baiting, but as a company made up of that exact type of person, you'd hope there'd be enough self-awareness to clock that particular vulnerability in the social structure
admittedly, it's totally possible that i'm ignorant to some wave of transphobia sweeping the networks i'm not part of; but even with all the chaos, it kind of feels like watching soon-to-be-divorced-parents arguing. like... everyone basically agrees with each other, and the inflammatory back-and-forth's are all about who can "win" the current discussion with the best zinger

@PeterVandivier it's always difficult to deal with new 'terms' when you are not get used to. I assume my daughter will easily accept them, I used 'equanimous' in a sentence that had only sense to me. There is a real awareness that these 'minorities' must have the same consideration that the 'big one'., I don't like to call it minorities because it is another way of discrimination. I'm not trans-phobic, but I'm not comfortable with some terms because I'm not used to them.
I hope this has any sense, I've not used google this time

lol, you have a very strange habit of pretending your english isn't better that those who speak it as a first language ;p

better?

much!
but reading your message, i think kind of reinforces my point. we all basically agree - where the sentiment is "don't be an asshole"
i think that was pretty well accepted already
in the huge number of interactions that occur on this network every day, sometimes people are going to be mean. sometimes I will be mean, or you will. perhaps (hopefully) we are not mean on purpose; but it will happen. and when it does, we try to fix it and apoplogize

I live on a small village, and recently, the husband of a coworker of my wife, has appeared on a TV show dressed like a woman. The have two children. His wife known the true 4 or 5 years ago.

bravo!

6:20 PM
You can imagine how it has been treated in a small village.

i was hoping that's not where the story was going, but yes
i can imagine
but i imagine there's also some people (like you) who are supportive of this family

Now he changed his/her name by a feminine name and stated how you must refer to her.
The only thing I can't understand is why the tv show

@McNets fair enough, and i hope as a friend, coworker, and ally, you were able to hear that request and think about it fairly (even if it made you uncomfortable)
@McNets i imagine for many reasons
i can speculate if it's interesting to you for me to do so

Exactly
And a forced CoC maybe is not the best way to accomplish it

i think that's a very fair phrasing
i think perhaps the SE staff were looking for their own "tv show" like your coworker had, but they really botched it
i can see why they wanted the "tv show", and what they hoped to accomplish with it
but i also have an opinion on why they failed

6:27 PM
Somethings only require time, and putting them in the arena, it's just another way of 'discrimination',maybe not the correct word

i just don't necessarily think commenting on it right away is helpful to the kind of chat rooms i wanted to have

You can always refer to someone else using his/her nickname. It's the easiest way to me.

that's precisely my thinking. we were already prepared to do that. and if someone had made a stink about not doing that, it would already have been in violation of the existing CoC and precedent (afaik)

But, I don't really know what is SE intention henceforth

6:53 PM
It’s all just a big mess
