@TomV mildly, yes
but in the end most regulars here know each others names, or at least have the means to remember those :D

@dezso I remembered it from a conversation we had about serial killers :D

@TomV oh yeah.
that's a very unwelcome connotation :D
and those 100+ kms are way more I did in one piece this year

Morning all

Yo

@TomV Is that someone who strangles their victims with an RS-232 cable?
4
I wonder if there's such a thing as a USB killer?

Or a parallel killer

quick question
if I want to install psql only
on linux
what should I use?

@AndyK which distro?
it should probably be in the distro's repository somewhere

it is postgresql on centos

A: Install PostgreSQL client (psql) only on CentOS

Ulrich SchwarzI think the naming convention might simply be backwards from what you expect there: there's a package postgresql-server The programs needed to create and run a PostgreSQL server and a package postgresql PostgreSQL client programs (and postgresql does not have a dependency on postgresq...

does it help?

@McNets cheers Mate

So yesterday I ordered a sofa and a bookshelf from the Heart Foundation shop and they delivered today but told Irsa that they couldn't take it upstairs. Now I have two sofas and a bookshelf in the living room and I don't have the means to get them upstairs myself.
The phrase 'useless tossers' comes to mind.
I've booked a collection for them to come and pick the items up.
I think I'll get flat pack ones from Ikea. At least I can get those up the stairs without having to rely on third parties to do their job.

there's a metaphor in there somewhere for transport vs storage costs
except for it's not a metaphor, that's literally the problem

2:06 PM
I suppose it was too good to be true. Buying secondhand furniture and expecting the vendor to deliver it to where it was actually needed.

I had also purchased a few items from BHF. The delivery guys were mostly useless.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Now I have a bookshelf and a sofa in my living room that I can't move upstairs.
Worse than useless. Dropped us in the shit.
I think I'm going to have to get a flat pack futon. It looks like that will cost about £700.
Found some cheaper ones about £500.

2:29 PM
We moved my brother a couple weeks ago. Luckily they have an aged dog and all the big furniture moved into the downstairs where they will be living until he passes. But they had some crazy heavy furniture. Had enough people to help that we got him all moved in just a couple trips with the UHaul.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Nobody can help you to move it upstairs?

@McNets I don't have anybody.

Just nip down the local pub at 5:30. "£20 if a couple of you can help me with this?". Sorted

Maybe.
Not even sure where the local pub is. There's probably one near the station.

Have you moved?

2:41 PM
Yes. Now ConcernedOfTonbridge

Or a neighbour...

That is ridiculous they didn't deliver to the room. That's like most of the point of delivery in the first place. I know piano movers do charge by the step, though.
I have to go get a piano from my grandmother's house. Not looking forward to it. We may disassemble on site. Going to do a bar conversion: instructables.com/id/…

@CadeRoux 'Service industry' is a notional concept in the UK.

Yeah, it's ludicrous. Proper sofa delivery companies are experts at removing windows to allow delivery, for example

3:05 PM
I suppose you get what you pay for. Caveat emptor.
Lot of one star reviews on Trustpilot. I suppose I should have done my homework a bit better.

1 hour later…
4:15 PM
All this talk of sofas has reminded me of Viz Top Tips. "Top tip: Convert your sofa into a sofa bed by forgetting your wife's birthday"

Lol

5:08 PM
I have been listening to audio books recently and am working through a series called Mortal Engines (tl;dr; post apocalyptic setting where cities are mobile and engage in "municipal Darwinism" aka eating other cities).
There is a pirate city called Tunbridge Wheels and I snicker every time I hear it.
Mortal Engines is the first of four novels in Philip Reeve's quartet of the same name. The book focuses on a futuristic, steampunk version of London, now a giant machine striving to survive on a world running out of resources. The book has won a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Award. == Concept == The book is set in a post-apocalyptic world, ravaged by a "Sixty Minute War", which caused massive geological upheaval. To escape the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other instabilities, a Nomad leader called Nikola Quercus (known as god Nicholas Quirke by the...

5:59 PM
I think they made that into a movie that bombed
Mortal Engines is a 2018 post-apocalyptic adventure film directed by Christian Rivers and with a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson, based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve, and starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang. An American–New Zealand co-production, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where entire cities have been mounted on wheels and motorised, and practice municipal Darwinism. Jackson purchased the rights to the book in 2009, but the film languished for several...

6:16 PM
Yeah, after I finished the first book I went googling and my first reaction was "I hadn't even heard of it and that was released just last Christmas" but then saw just how poorly it did relative to expense and yeah...

I'll check it out on Plex, but if the books are good, I might read them first.

It's not great but it's "something different." Sometimes there are leaps of how did we get from A to C without ever mentioning B but that could just be a reflection of my ability to listen versus read.
Could also be me drifting off to sleep listening to them ;)

6:37 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells you should call them to get them back and refund you.
So you have at least space to move!

7:20 PM
@billinkc Should I be concerned?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Well...
It wheely depends

> It wheely depends
And the award for dad joke of the day goes to ... @billinkc

'tis my purpose in life

I'll see if I can find a 46" chest batik.
It's getting a bit big for Indonesia. I have trouble finding ones big enough for me.

keep giving me awards such as this, I'll need that size in headpiece
"No, no, this is for an American."... "Rice sacks? Sure he won't know the difference and it might fit him"

7:26 PM
I have a beci that's a bit too small for me. It might fit you.
I should refrain from complimenting you further then, lest I find it troublesome to find a beci large enough to fit your head.
In unrelated news, I made the mistake of listening to Downbelow Station on audiobook. C.J. Cherryh isn't the lightest of reading, and the audiobook went for 19 hours. I elected to read Cyteen in print.

I started listening to Asimov's Foundations and quickly decided that would best be consumed via print. No available audiobooks from Cherrryh at the local library

7:41 PM
🤔 approved a suggested edit then got the same (pre-edit) post in the "first posts" queue. worth noting somewhere?

8:35 PM
@PeterVandivier that happens often. Also down voting something you see on the front page or voting to close doesn't always prevent the post from showing up in review

8:59 PM
hot take: computers are hard, you guys

9:14 PM
i'm not even sure what the question would be, but... is there a productive dialogue around the top score distributions of different networks?
like... math.se has 16/578k users over 200k rep, but superuser has 2/812k users over 200k rep
with like... a weird difference in total questions and traffic too?
