Sali folks
@jcolebrand MySQL doesn't have snapshots
@jcolebrand It also doesn't have "compare to folder" like the SQL Server version. See red-gate.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=14323

hi all
Which site does this question fit best SO, DBA, SU ? [MySQL query dev like SQL Server](http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9860983/mysql-query-dev-like-sql-server)
He wants to know if there is a query builder tool for MySQL in Mac.

gbn
maybe SQLyog has one?
Sure it has actually
Dunno if there is a Mac verision
As for site: could be SO or SU or here

gbn
last frost here was liek 1962
Malta has a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa), with mild winters and warm to hot summers. Rain occurs mainly in winter, with summer being generally dry. There is no real thermal dormant season for plants, although plant growth can be checked briefly by abnormal cold in winter (patches of ground frost may occur in inland locales), and summer heat and aridity may cause vegetation to wilt. Effectively there are only two seasons, which makes the islands attractive for tourists, especially during the drier months. However, strong winds can make Malta feel co...

Q: Data Base Administration Oracle vs MySql?

EdprogI have worked with MSSQL for a while now, but now we want to try to move to some open source for a specific part of the company's products or explore Oracle if possible. What would you say are the main differences between the Database Administration Capabilities between MySql and Oracle?. Can I d...

Troll bait?
The MySQL fanbois are already out in force.

gbn
yeah

I wonder if we should start some tags along the lines of , or .
@gbn B*stard

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Bitte schön

TBH Sunny Bournemouth isn't too bad today.

gbn
indeed. But end of the week...

1:16 PM
But 'SQL in the Sun' sounds like a jolly fine idea.
Do you think we actually need to bother with a conference?
I mean, I do have a programme for a B.I. seminar.
Perhaps we could have a MySQL fanboi drinking game. Google 'MySQL vs. Oracle' and each pick one of the top 10 google search results:

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells "Any excuse"

@gbn I thought the content was pretty good and would be of general interest.

gbn
BI would be
I can rustle up some BI locals to add a veneer of legitimacy

@gbn I imagine that it wouldn't take much persuasion once they saw the 'cd /pub' section.
Mar 8 at 15:43, by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
I can hold a seminar about business intelligence:
1. Doesn't exist
2. cd /pub

gbn
yes
I'm on Skype chat with some BI types right now

1:21 PM
I mean, we can bill it as 'exposing the real truth about Business Intelligence - the inside track from a professional with 10 years experience in the industry.'

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells sounds sensational when expressed liek that

Anyway, I thought the MySQL vs. Oracle drinking game might be a good schedule item:
Take a drink when someone mentions that it's just as good as Oracle one a single point.
Drink your glass when someone describes MySQL as 'ready for the enterprise'

gbn
You're assuming DB chat rather then tourist-watching

Everyone finish your drink when a fanboi claims it's better than Oracle.

gbn
and at 4am in some local rock/blues bar

1:24 PM
@gbn True - with any luck we will lack the coordination to spell MySQL properly for the google search.

gbn
I0m looking at what I can do for UK jolly too on company time/expense
but it sounds far more fun to drag you lot over than just me go to UK

@gbn Don't hesitate to drop us a line. I'll message you with contact details on LinkedIn if you haven't already got them. We've also got a reasonably comfortable fold-out bed at my gaff and we're pretty close to Heathrow.

gbn
ta.

I think a Malta shindig sounds like just what the doctor ordered.

Beer, Sun, no talk of computers
Sounds perfect

1:30 PM
@Phil I think my B.I. seminar plan covers that pretty well.

gbn
@Phil we can cover that with our phones.

I'm pretty sure @MarkStoreySmith would be up for that too. I had hoped @ypercube could get there easily but apparently he has to fly through frankfurt, which would be a bit of a sod.

gbn
we'll always have our computers with us
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells paddle?

@gbn It's pretty close. Maybe there's a ferry. I have no idea.

gbn
seriously, there was no direct from Switz to Scotland.

1:32 PM
@JackDouglas has a wife and 2.4 kids, so I don't know if he could easily get away.

gbn
PITA
Sometimes air travel can be so indirect

Mind you, it's fairly cheap to cross the atlantic, so maybe some of our merkin friends might want to make an appearance.
Frankfurt's a major hub. If you can get to Frankfurt and they fly Frankfurt-Malta then that trip might not be too grim
Unless you find yourself laid up waiting for 16 hours at Frankfurt Airport.

gbn
In FFT or ZH you can pick up Air Malta which codeshare with Swiss and Lufthasa
eg Swiss JFK to ZH

£180 from Manc isn't bad

Doesn't @NickChammas live somewhere near Boston?

gbn
1:35 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells thimnk he does
direct to FFT/ZH then

@jcolebrand lives in Louisiana if his profile's to be believed, so that might involve some connecting flights.

gbn
There is direct Athens to malta
Anway, "Friza hemm ja bghal imġiddem!"
freeze your arses off you muthas in maltese

@gbn @ypercube - how close do you live to Athens?

gbn
discussing "SQL in the sun" with the Maltese BI monkeys

@jcolebrand - how easy is it for you to get to JFK or somewhere that can connect to Zurich or Frankfurt?
Maybe Heathrow?
Have to try not to annoy the locals though. You wouldn't want to make a Maltese Cross. *rimshot

gbn
1:47 PM
/me facepalms

Sorry, couldn't resist.

@Concerned: I'm 5 mins from the Athens airport, so about 40-50 mins from Athens.

gbn
tuesday and fridays

@ypercube @gbn reckons you can get flights from Athens.

There used to be direct charter flights to Malta in summer time. Not sure how often nowadays, but some will exist for sure.

gbn
1:50 PM
@ypercube quite handy that. I was 5 mins away when I lived in Zurich too.
very convenient

I have a mojito cordial recipe - mint leaves, sugar syrup, lime juice and zest off the limes. Just add rum, ice and soda water. Could make up a batch and bring it.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells dirt cheap here for mojitos

@gbn Fair enough then - they're about £7.50 each in a city bar.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that about upto 5 beers or 4/5 shorts here

@gbn I'm beginning to like the sound of this.

gbn
1:55 PM
well, guiness 500ml is 4 euros tops
330 bottle heini 2
short+mixer 2
can of 500ml cheap

@gbn I remember paying 4 euros for a can of lemonade in Venice once.

gbn
1.50-2 in pub

You could just about save the air fare on the drinking bill.
What's a good time to do this?

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells for me, any time pretty much
May to October is best weather

Maybe shoulder season when the tourist traffic isn't too aggressive?

gbn
1:58 PM
UK brochure season is start May to mid Oct IIRC
I was in shorts + flipflops start Dec
and it's ncioe now

May's probably a bit short notice for most people, I suspect. Maybe somewhere about October?

gbn
until may can still get some rain
sure, whatver is best for folk

Or mid-year, about June/

gbn
also good. before the July/august rush

I suspect we'll have to put a stick in the ground that gives folks a bit of notice and let them plan for it.
June would give us a couple of months to organise, maybe a long weekend, which might work with @ypercube's flights as well.

A: Highlight code SQL Style rather than Stackoverflow style

jcolebrandWhat do you mean "properly highlighted sql style"? You're not very helpful with that, unless you mean "Everything should be formatted like Microsoft SQL Server does things. What the site uses, and what everyone agrees is "just right" is http://code.google.com/p/google-code-prettify/ which is a "...

too harsh?
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells not at all easy. What's the intent? A drinking meetup?
If we were talking August of this year I might could do a get-together, if we were talking August of next year I'll be there with bells on

@jcolebrand Yes.

gbn
@jcolebrand with a veneer of respectabiltiy

@jcolebrand 'SQL In the Sun'
44 mins ago, by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
I mean, we can bill it as 'exposing the real truth about Business Intelligence - the inside track from a professional with 10 years experience in the industry.'

@gbn when is it ever not?

Mar 8 at 15:43, by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
I can hold a seminar about business intelligence:
1. Doesn't exist
2. cd /pub

2:06 PM
@jcolebrand last para a bit harsh perhaps - I don't think English is his first language

Hey hey hey, I recently realized that I'm in the field of BI, except a bit less than some.
@JackDouglas I was afraid of that.
I'll just pull that bit and be done with it
I just hate to close it needlessly

@jcolebrand I've seen businesses so lacking in intelligence they defy belief. I suspect that your self-deprecating 'lacking' isn't even close to being in the same league.

I just mean that we're not a true BI job.

gbn
I've enlisted one native already<
@jcolebrand I read that quite differently at first

Never, since working in the Square Mile, have I seen such a confluence of wealth and stupidity in the same place. It's a testament to the power of incumbency.
@jcolebrand As indicated by your intelligence.
Anyway, @jcolebrand - is June too soon for you?
Maybe it would be better to aim for later in the year, say Sept-October, to give people time to get organised.

gbn
2:15 PM
I'll look at creating a SQLPass chapter here
looks easy enough from what I've seen in other countries...
another veneer of respectability

@gbn I like this idea - can you get some official looking bumf from them. Maybe we can fake it convincingly enough to claim it.
Maybe we should see if we can get @AaronBertrand across - we could bill him as the MVP guest of honour. He lives somewhere in the NE IIRC.

gbn
he he
now we're rolling

Do you think the SQLPass folks would get mad at us for takiing their name in vain?

God forbid they actually require us to run a conference.

gbn
2:18 PM
The swiss chapter ran one SQL Saturday IIRC
it was a CV/LinkedIn entry for someone IMO

Well, the powerpoint presentation does suggest that providing meals/drinks is a good idea.
And that meetings should be kept separate from professional considerations to avoid conflicts of interest.
I think we can probably manage both of those.

gbn
Just checked with a colleague.
He said "good idea"
he ran a .net one for a while here until real life got in the way

You realise we might actually end up running a conference :)

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells In the loosest sense of the word

@gbn We'll just have to keep an eye on that.

gbn
2:24 PM
perhaps SQLpass should come after "SQL in the sun"

@gbn Well, maybe we can discuss it at 'SQL in the sun'

gbn
we need pens with SQLPass logos
that'll do it
some badgey things

@gbn Maybe we can get some t-shirts as well.
SQLPass branded mojito and pint glasses?

gbn
I'm sure I can find "friend of a friend" here who can do a good deal on some gizzits

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to do some homework on a hotel as well.

gbn
2:26 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that's quite easy

If you have any SQL code on the T-shirts, don't forget to colourize it, "SQL style"

I suspect June might be a bit short notice for our Merkin friends - maybe sept-oct?

gbn
reconnaissance?
later is better yes for the merkins

`select * from business where intelligence > 0`
`(0 row(s) affected)`

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yep, I'm in Boston. @gbn, you planning to visit the area?

gbn
2:31 PM
@NickChammas kinda the opposite
"SQL in the Sun". In malta

Ooh, an invitation.

gbn
Your company name came up in conversation the other day
oddly
well, not oddly. We're doing an MMO game and CTO name checked Turbine

@NickChammas Yep. If you can get a connecting flight to Zurich, Frankfurt or maybe Heathrow you can get to Malta easily enough for a drinkin^h^h^h^h^h^hSQL Conference.
Do you think Sept-Oct sometime would be enough notice?

gbn
The US chaps would have bring significant others though
So need to keep the wimminfolk happy
I know where the shops are

@gbn Hmmm. A WAGs tour :) What goes in Malta stays on Facebook.

gbn
2:34 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells From UK/GR it's a bloke weekend.

@gbn Yes, so we will need a WAG shindig for the Merkins who want to bring their SO's across.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yeah. Don't know if I'll be able to make it myself, as I have other travels planned for that time period, but 6 months notice sounds like plenty.

gbn
If I was US based, no way my missus would let me swan off to the Med/Europe for a databse conference

@NickChammas What's a better time for you? or maybe, when are you already booked?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yeah, June is way too soon. Lots of details that I'll share in the future.

2:38 PM
@jcolebrand You think Sept-Oct sometime would be feasible?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells probably
I need to get back on the Med. I was in Nice in 2009, and I couldn't have had a more lovely two weeks of intense grid computing school

@jcolebrand A few years I was tempted to do a summer school on soft systems at the Italian-Swiss university in Lugano. They're holding another one this year, but I don't think I can make that one either.

gbn
@jcolebrand Nice isn't the best place on the med

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Well, I think Sept-Oct works great. The thing is, I won't know if I can make it until a couple of months from now when my travel plans pan out.

@gbn I realize this.
I'm also a wanker Amerikaner
Anything Continental is much better than home.

gbn
2:41 PM
@jcolebrand k, in which case you can do malta/italy etc and see the rest

@NickChammas Mmmmm. I think we will probably have to firm up dates fairly soon or the bookings will get expensive.

gbn
@jcolebrand I agree, on a smaller scale.

I have some Italian boys that would die to show me a week in their town.

gbn
nice

@jcolebrand Where are they from?

2:43 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Agreed. In that case I suggest going ahead with Sept-Oct (given that works for most), and I'll hopefully be one of the late registrants.

@gbn - can we delegate you to do a bit of forward recon about this?

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells hotels, easy

@gbn I imagine pubs won't be too much of a stretch either.

gbn
some kind of room/hall. Will ask
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells not in the slightest

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Catania/Milan
as in, currently in Catania, from Milan

2:48 PM
Catania's on Sicily IIRC.
I know someone from Pavia who lived in Sicilia for a while and really loved it.
@jcolebrand Maybe they can come. There's a ferry to Malta from Catania. It's about 100km.
Alternatively we could do a side trip to Catania

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells, @jcolebrand, @gbn - When this is all set up, we should definitely have a nice Community Ad to promote it (and probably a new thread, since that one is for Q4 2011).

gbn
There is a fast boat to Sicily
Many a tourist do it

@NickChammas def need a new post. That's why it's labelled Q4 2011 ;-)

gbn
Hiring a boat and driver to potter around the island is 200-250 euros per day, BYOB.

yeap

2:52 PM
@gbn That's at least one day taken care of.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells leaves at 07:00. So don't go to sleep...
:-)

@NickChammas Have to be careful not to imply there might be an actual conference, though.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells It could be promoted as a DBA.SE meetup. Of course, if we're aiming for a small group, then maybe just promoting in here is sufficient.

SQL in the Sun 'Conference'
@gbn You know, if it's OK for Brent Ozar to organise a SQL cruise, I don't see why we can't :)

gbn
indeed

2:59 PM
Got to go, see you all later.

gbn
ciao

@ypercube Somewhere around Sept-Oct, I hope :)
bye

Pfft, Oracle too!

@Phil 'Oracle in the Sun' is fine by me. 'SQL' can be generic - it doesn't have to specifically refer to SQL Server.

gbn
@Phil Database agnostic drinking
anyway, off homenow
ciao all

3:10 PM
@gbn ciao

3:58 PM
hey, all

How's everything in the DBA world of things on your side of the pond?

@Shark Pretty good thanks. And you?
Fancy a trip to Malta sometime around Sept-Oct?

4:15 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Not too bad, the usual. Malta? What's happening in Malta?

@Shark Read back up the thread

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Awesome! Count me in

@Shark Keep in touch.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Will do.

1 hour later…
5:35 PM
Where are @gbn and COTW trying to drag me to? Am I not traveling enough this week?
:-)

@jcolebrand - "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the site points to "team+dba@stackexchange.com", which Gmail translates to "team dba@...". Is that correct?

@AaronBertrand This is Malta in September-October.
A drinkin^h^h^h^h^h^h SQL conference in sunny Malta.
We thought you could be our keynote speaker, to complement my B.I.Seminar
4 hours ago, by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
I mean, we can bill it as 'exposing the real truth about Business Intelligence - the inside track from a professional with 10 years experience in the industry.'
Mar 8 at 15:43, by ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells
I can hold a seminar about business intelligence:
1. Doesn't exist
2. cd /pub
Perhaps you could do a presentation of 'the finer points of query optimisation and gin and tonic.'
@AaronBertrand Think you can fit that into your calendar?

6:26 PM
Tempted by Malta?

I will take a look...

@AaronBertrand The dates aren't firmed up yet, but we're aiming for somewhere about September-October to give everyone room to organise and plan ahead.
With @gbn on the ground we should have local knowledge and be able to get some cheap digs for the shindig.

@NickChammas gmail shouldn't add a space. Gmail's the site that handles the email for se
you're using Chrome and authorizing gmail as the main mailto: hook on the system aren't you?

gbn
6:46 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Indeed

Let me know when you have more details. We are expecting our first child Sept 25 so it may be tough.
Work is behind it though and would likely let me go...

@AaronBertrand That's fairly crap timing.
I guess we could pull it towards the beginning of September, but you'll want the last couple of weeks free so you can be on deck for the baby.
@gbn - think beginning of September?
Or too busy with tourist season?

Wow, does this mean I have to name my child Malta? :-)

@AaronBertrand Well, given that my birthday is the 26th, I'll let you get away with giving them a middle name of ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells.
@AaronBertrand In practice, the date isn't set yet, so if you do want to come we can at least make an attempt to organise it for a time you can get there.
I christen thee Malta Gbn ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Bertrand.
Could be worse
Could be Moonchild.

gbn
7:28 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Jul/aug is worst
but Jul/Aug is language student time
:-)
depends on your age fo course
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Otherwise, a good time. Still toastie warm, but the edge is off.
@MikaelEriksson: we're planning "SQL in the sun" in Malta for september-ish
Interested?

@gbn you got it

8:08 PM
@gbn Sounds like a great idea. Not sure I can get away but I'm interested.

8:46 PM
@jcolebrand yes

@NickChammas the + becomes a space in the URL

1 hour later…
9:58 PM
@jcolebrand Ah, I see. It's that trick that lets you filter email going to the same inbox. Cool.

@NickChammas Aye

10:45 PM
I'm interested too, and I think work will be behind me. The earlier in September, the more likely I'll be able to go.

@AaronBertrand Jolly good. Do we need to come up with some fake conference swag to convince them?
