Do we let questioners roll back edits that include DDL?
because they don't want those edits?
Or as policy if people improve questions by adding DDL, that DDL has a right to stick?

2:56 AM
@MaxVernon Hmm... openSUSE belongs to Novell?
> Novell, one of the founding members of the Open Invention Network, decided to make the community an important part of their development process by opening widely the distribution development to outside contributors in 2005, creating the openSUSE distribution and the openSUSE Project.
In that link. :)

3:30 AM
@EvanCarroll After a second rollback by the user you should probably not keep pushing it and instead ask for someone else to pitch in.
There's also a way to add the DDL without revising the entire question.

my 2c: seems you have an obsession with CTAS. The question did not need it.
Your answer on the other hand was fine and I can't see why it was deleted.

Fair enough, I was willing to drop the CTAS argument. I think it should be the standard, but I believe you know why i think that and if you're unconvinced I'm quite sure I can't sell that one further.
I also think I should be able to downvote questions that refuse them, because of the form, and comment on those questions with why I'm downvoting. And, that too was deleted.
As if constructive criticism on the question and explaining a downvote violates not nice or something.

@EvanCarroll I don't know about that. I didn't read those comments.
@EvanCarroll I prefer CREATE TABLE and INSERT INTO if I am going to add DDL.
If the question has nice formatted data, you could add a link to rextester.com or sqlfiddle and the DDL there. Less intrusive to the question.
@EvanCarroll You can downvote for whatever reason you think ;) If someone flags a comment for whatever reason, the mods have to process the flag.

7:58 AM
Generally, I only have a slight preference for CTAS over CREATE TABLE / INSERT INTO. As in, I don't really care. I would never rewrite CREATE TABLE/INSERT INTO as a CTAS. I do have preference for not using rextester or sqlfiddle because I've seen a lot of those services die off and take their data with them causing hard core link rot (rafb.net and erxz.com come to mind).
Yea, but certainly the mods don't have to act on a flag just because the person asking the question doesn't like what is being said (the criticism).

highlight:
> At this point frustration begins to kick in. Earlier this night YP explicitly mentioned he was going to sign off as it was getting late (23:00 or so local time), but didn’t due to the replication problems popping up all of a sudden.

2017/01/31 23:00-ish

YP thinks that perhaps pg_basebackup is being super pedantic about there being an empty data directory, decides to remove the directory. After a second or two he notices he ran it on db1.cluster.gitlab.com, instead of db2.cluster.gitlab.com

out of curiosity, @ypercubeᵀᴹ, you are not YP(ercube)...?

haha, no

> So in other words, out of 5 backup/replication techniques deployed none are working reliably or set up in the first place.

8:45 AM
@TomV yeah.
It's also a mix. In some points I can't figure what "backups" means in a specific sentence. (LVM snapshots, pg_dump, pg_basebackup, S3 backup, Azure disk snapshot)
It also seems that they are not taking pg basebackups or backing up WAL files. If they did, they could replay from the latest pg_basebackup

11:11 AM
@TomV Is SSRS that dirty...?

yes, the report builder but can you help me do the same example but with my parameter? — Scorpion99 1 min ago

11:43 AM
@TomV SSRS has something of a Jekyll and Hyde aspect. Some SSRS questions are 'how do I get it to do a section break?' Some SSRS issues are more like 'take days of troubleshooting to figure out why it's shat itself and stopped working.'
It's quite good at generating obtuse 'why doesn't this work now?' type issues.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Yeah I can't quite put my finger on it, I have a love/hate relationship with the thing. Sometimes you can do really neat tricks if you understand some of the mindset, but then something really simple makes you go "wtf is this so hard"

12:18 PM
@TomV I'll second that

@JamesLupolt what do you mean?, that's @PaulWhite

'Paul White read committed snapshot' has more accurate results. No image matches, though.

@JamesLupolt that's because you aren't googling right, you should google paul white kiwi

@JamesLupolt that's sad. An image of @PaulWhite reading a committed snapshot would be beautiful.

3:03 PM
@JamesLupolt Apparently very few snapshots of Paul White have been committed (for us to read).

re: GitLab meltdown: the recovery process is being streamed

@EvanCarroll yes, but its not required to be rude when doing so. Perhaps just check what your going to say to see if meets the "be nice" requirement before pressing "Enter". By the way, it wasn't me who deleted either (I don't have that authoritah)

Who wants to help me rubber duck a Heisenbug? SSIS package grabs an archive from an FTP server and runs 7zip using "Execute Process Task". It succeeds in both our QA and UAT environments, fails in Staging and prod. The only info I have is "Process exit code was 2 when the expected was 0". 7zip exit code 2 just means "fatal error". The package worked fine last month and I don't know of anything that's changed in the meantime.

Are you sure that's the 7zip exit code and not the Win32 exit code (which would mean 'file not found')?

Hmm. I am not sure. Worth investigating further.

I like Process Monitor from Sysinternals for diagnosing that type of problem

I think we have procmon on Staging, I'll see if I can suss out any signal from the noise.

sorry, @mikeTheLiar - but what does "rubber duck a Heisenbug" mean? I've never heard that.

thanks

The possibly apocryphal origin of the duck is actually quite amusing hwrnmnbsol.livejournal.com/148664.html
fml it worked when I ran it on staging this time

@mikeTheLiar a true heisenbug then.

@mikeTheLiar I loved that. Thanks for sharing it!

4:25 PM
And it still fails on prod. The gods of debugging are not smiling on me today.

@mikeTheLiar ssis is poo?
@AaronHall thanks for your explanation of __name__ == '__main__' very very handy

@MaxVernon yeah it's a fun read, glad you enjoyed

@AaronBertrand and this time a nice one, unlike that earlier one

That answer is actually part of an A/B test for answers for me.

5:10 PM
@AaronHall Why do you have 2 answers in that q?

That's the A and the B.
The much lower voted one is 100% correct, but far more terse.

@AaronHall I find this (test) weird, but ok.

Is there documentation somewhere/does anyone know how an SSIS Execute Process task is actually run when the package is executed?

@AaronBertrand - what language is that code written in ?

Looks like C#, I'm still not convinced it is a database-related issue.

That's C#

DBNull.Value is definitely .NET at least
But I don't know about the let syntax
I haven't seen that in C#. F# maybe?

I write C# all the time
Oh crap, missed the let keyword
Could still be VB

8:57 PM
hiss

lol, sorry
I read too fast :p
The point is it's .NET
And it's either transmission configuration (there's an upper limit on .NET raw sending of things)
Or he's doing something wrong
I would be okay with that being on SO if you guys think it fits there better
@mikeTheLiar Besides, you're still a liar ;-)

@jcolebrand Mike knows much, tells some. Mike knows many things others do not.

I guess it depends on what exactly is causing the out of memory error. But it seems like BitConverter is having the issue with some length of string, and would happen regardless of source (might just hit a different threshold depending on source, Unicode or not, etc).

@AaronBertrand hey. Just wanted to let you know that SentryOne got very well known with some people here

Ah, I'm betting it is C#, using (ugh) query syntax
method syntax for lyfe

8:59 PM
@Lamak Nice

yeah, I said the same. And I might have let them know that I've talked to you

We will celebrate with an adult beverage at some point. I promise.

sounds great
@AaronBertrand Here in Chile the SQL Server community is starting to grow
seems like this year's SQL Saturday will have a lot more people

Date?
Oh, April 1st.
I'm such a fool. GET IT!?!?!?

@AaronBertrand lol, yeah

9:05 PM
I feel like that OPs problem on the SMO thing is not what he thinks it is. Let's send it to SO?

Let's chat after April 1st and you can tell me about the event - crowd size, how vendors fared, etc. It's way too late for this year but maybe someday I can convince my boss to send me

@AaronBertrand I most definitely will

hi guys

and if you know someone that might want to sponsor poor us, let us know :)

@mikeTheLiar that's the part that I was wondering. Never seen a let statement since working with Basic...

9:08 PM
Does any know use SSAS before?

@jcolebrand agreed

done

@Lamak I will mention it, but most of my capacity is fighting to go. Due to our PASS partnership most of our SQL Saturday sponsorship is already distributed that way.
(We pay the annual global alliance partner thing, and a portion of that is allocated to the SQL Saturday portfolio in general.)

@MaxVernon I'm almost positive it's a snippet from a C# LINQ statement using query syntax

ahhh ok

9:15 PM
I forgot about it because I almost exclusively use method syntax

@mikeTheLiar I hate LINQ.

I'm going to guess you mean LINQ to SQL and not the larger concept of LINQ itself
Because linq is pretty magically

@AaronBertrand I was mostly joking, but I appreciate it

linq to sql can definitely get...quirky.

@Lamak like actually going, probably a better chance for next year after we chat, because I can make a better case with actual numbers and first-person accounts

9:19 PM
@mikeTheLiar if the task is run or if the process ran/finish successfully?

@AaronBertrand seriously, sounds freaking great to me

@mikeTheLiar perhaps I just don't understand it properly.

@TomV when the task is run. I'm (manually) walking through an SSIS package that is randomly failing and trying to isolate failure points. When I execute the command manually from the command line (it's 7z.exe fwiw) the command fails when I try to run the command that I think SSIS would be running.

Ok birthday dinner, ciao folks. I'm going to try to show up more often, I promise.

So something like D:\path\to\my\ssis\package>7z.exe -e "Path to some archive" -o "path to destination"

9:21 PM
@mikeTheLiar SSIS logging would tell you if the step ran, but might not inform you of the return value depending....

@AaronBertrand happy birthday, by the way!

Well I know it runs and I know it returns an error code. It's just that the error code is not super helpful. There's also some question as to whether the error is coming from 7z or from the win32 wrapper

@MaxVernon thanks Max!

maybe wrap it in a .bat file, a powershell script or a script task could make things easier
@AaronBertrand Oh, happy birthday

@AaronBertrand good luck
and happy birthday

9:23 PM
@AaronBertrand I'm jumping on the happy birthday train, so happy birthday!

@mikeTheLiar I tend to prefer script tasks sometimes because they allow you to propagate errors better

@TomV part of the reason this is so weird and infuriating it because it's only failing in certain environments
And then intermittently
Local, QA, UAT -> succeeds. Staging -> fails sometimes. Prod -> always fails. This worked last month when the package ran. Nothing (that I know of) has changed.

@mikeTheLiar yeah a 7ZipSharp call in a script task would provide more detail I guess
execute process is a bitch to debug

s/execute process/SSIS/

@mikeTheLiar yes, but ssis has decent logging, the process just fires off out of context and makes it even harder

9:27 PM

@mikeTheLiar Sure you have, you can add breakpoints, but they lose it when calling out of process native applications
and it breaks logging while it's at it too
but I rely on logs rather than debugging when using ssis
then again I've been known to make wrong choices before
it's like using xp_cmdshell, it's really hard to see what's happening once you fire it off
what happens if you, say, execute process 7zip whatever > c:\temp\7ziplog.log?

I think that's going to be my next step

(and make sure the SSIS account/proxy account has write access there)
Random guesses would be, for your issue, the proxy account has security restrictions in prod, UAC maybe, a race condition only sometimes occuring in staging and often in prod, but it's hard to tell with no error messages

Q: mysql update query error Code 1054 unknown column in field list

valoError: Code 1054. Unknown column 'U2.id_naslov' in 'field list' gets thrown on this simple query in MySQL Workbench: UPDATE krneki_1 AS U1, krneki_2 AS U2 SET U1.id_naslov = U2.id_naslov WHERE (U2.id_zaposlen = U1.id_naslovi_zaposleni) I have searched and read other posts on the net but nothi...

3 answers, all wrong.
But the comment is right. Paul would be happy ;)

@mikeTheLiar You might also get some mileage by defining variables and mapping them to the StandardOut and StandardError streams from Execute Task and then popping that out to whatever logger

11:00 PM
@Marcus I added the "SQL Server" again as you alreday have an answer about that and your edit/removal invalidated the answer. — ypercubeᵀᴹ 1 min ago
@AaronBertrand I edited your answer (just a bit) and rolled back the question to include the sql-server tag - as the OP's edit had made your answer look out of place.
