@FreshPrinceOfSO Great minds meet?

Feel free to correct me if I'm overstepping what defines "my idea"

@FreshPrinceOfSO You should be flattered. Your ideas are so good and people like them so much that after a while they think they are their ideas.

@ypercube The only reason they answered was because there was a 500 bounty
Which I have yet to award, so if anyone wants to answer that question...

@FreshPrinceOfSO I see 500 awarded, by Pekka, to that answer.

The clippy!

@ypercube that makes me angry

That's not mod behaviour

@Zane lol. i was wrong.
But good answer nonetheless

@James Never mind. We'll have another one in a few months.
@ypercube You'd be amazed what you can achieve if you don't mind who takes the credit.

Q: How to ensure candidates pre-commit for next election

Carl MummertThis is a follow up to How can we best judge who has the skills to be a moderator? . Two moderators have recently resigned, and they say there will be another election soon. @Shog9 why is this under math
and how's your day

@FreshPrinceOfSO Because that's what @Aaron asked for
@FreshPrinceOfSO to date, lacking sufficient coffee
but, I'm almost through overnight pings
so, that's a start

wouldn't be able to relate, don't drink coffee
oh, these are previous years

@FreshPrinceOfSO Imagine you're addicted to something... And it's widely available... And it's actually kinda good for you in moderation.

5:42 PM
So you're addicted?

Oh, right, this is Stack Exchange. So you don't have to imagine.

There's support groups out there. Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc.

@Shog9 several of those pings were from me - sorry not sorry

@bluefeet your answer looked good
(there, that's another ping off the list!)

@Shog9 it was rewritten from my rambling version last night

5:43 PM
@Shog9 I flagged this question to be historically locked... since we have you here ...

@FreshPrinceOfSO what's wrong with it?
IIRC, mysql_* is deprecated, not questions about mysql_*

@Shog9 thanks! Updated:

Q: Make moderator election questionnaire mandatory

Aaron Bertrand Note: Before I even begin, I want to stress that this is for the next election, not the current one. I can understand why candidates may want to opt out of the moderator election chat room - for some people chat is just not their thing, and it is not an official moderator duty IIRC. But I c...

@Shog9 from what I read about historic locks, off-topic questions that have value can be locked but stamped with a "don't ask these types of questions"

@FreshPrinceOfSO if the questions/answers are no longer being updated. It looks like one of the answers was updated Feb 14

@Shog9 it's off topic because it's a) too broad b) doesn't have an actual programming problem c) i'll buy you a coffee

5:46 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO well, a rather narrow subset of them can - it makes zero sense for questions that need to be kept updated.
@FreshPrinceOfSO defend #A
why is it too broad?
the key bits of the answer to that question were long ago condensed into a comment that's routinely sprinkled around by the PHP folks, so this better be good...

too many possible answers

(#B is bullshit, and I just made a fresh pot, so nice try)

as evident by the many answers, and the long long responses
JUST LOCK IT

@FreshPrinceOfSO 9 visible answers, several of them full or partial dups.
I've seen more varied answers to questions on specific regular expressions

I rest my case

5:51 PM
I should also note that it's never been closed (never gotten so much as a close vote!) - the utter lack of controversy alone pretty much rules out a lock - even if it did get closed now, it'd have to be reopened again and re-closed a few times.
DECLINED.

A: Nominations: New Stack Overflow Moderator

David HAustI say hook up Shog9 for SO. He's been around since the early days. He participates with a level head. He's funny and seems to have a sense of humour about things. And keep Marc and Bill (if they want it). They have been doing a great job. That's my 2 cents.

@Shog9 Nice. Which marc?

only "ran" in one election (the first) and never nominated
@FreshPrinceOfSO Marc Gravell was one of the first mods on SO (the other was Bill)
Jeff Atwood on May 19, 2009

The Stack Overflow moderator election is now complete.

There were two users who clearly ran away from the pack in the voting: Marc Gravell and Bill the Lizard. Between the two of them, they accounted for almost a third of all the 2,880 votes cast.

It was a tough choice determining such a close race — so we didn’t! Both Bill and Marc are new Stack Overflow moderators. I’ve posted some moderation guidelines and flipped the switch on their accounts.

As for Server Fault, that was tougher, because the community is just starting out. None of the existing Stack Overflow team is really qualified to moderate a site intended for system administrators and IT professionals. …

The first SO election looked a lot different from what we get today:
Jeff Atwood on March 20, 2009

Stack Overflow has exactly four moderators: Joel, Jeff (me), Jarrod, and Geoff. It’s no coincidence that the list of moderators is identical to the list of co-founders and mainline developers.

As we launch the upcoming IT / SysAdmin sister site, we’ve had very little luck locating notable folks from that community to act as moderators and spiritual leaders for the site. So we’re flirting with the idea of promoting users with high reputation scores and the respect of the community to moderator status. …

@Shog9 But seriously, what would you consider a historic lock?

@Shog9 mmm, sprinkles

@FreshPrinceOfSO what's the point?

@enderland Bummer.
It was a more or less cogent answer (if I say so myself) on how applicable the Joel Test is to working in end-user companies - i.e. companies where their primary business is not software development.
I do contract work, so the majority of my punters are not actually software firms.

@enderland Yeah the rain is the problem.
Since my windshield wipers broke.

Just lean out the window with a bottle of Windex and a squeegee

I pulled into work the other day and when pushing my wipers up to avoid ice realized one... wasn't attached anymore (I got lucky! haha)

@enderland Well, the tag on it is kinda suggestive.
Oh, well. DBA.SE drinkies in about an hour, so I ought to de-camp to Richmond. Toodle pip.

@Shog9 I would but my driver side window doesn't work....

that blows

Yeah it's an old truck.
I won't buy a new one until I can pay cash.

@Zane this is a great mentality! :)

@Zane what are you, European ?

@FreshPrinceOfSO What I am is someone who got into Medical debt at an early age and as a result has been paying 1000 dollars a month for the last 3 years and refuses to ever owe anyone money ever again.

@Zane that'll do it

6:30 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO Yeah I got on Minnesotacare when I was having medical problems. I was sick to the point that I couldn't work and was talked into joining this program. It wasn't until years later that I found out that MNCare didn't cover any of my bills and that I owed about 20/30 grand in expenses. When questioned the state claimed to have no record of me.
I didn't keep very good records myself since I was 19 and stupid.

Sorry to hear. That sounds like America.

@FreshPrinceOfSO Same country that gives me the opportunity to have fought my way out of that debt hell and come as far as I have. Also technically I could have got out by declaring bankruptcy years ago. However as a mark of pride I pay the money I owe.

Here we go again.....:)

I would have probably gone the bankruptcy route..

@FreshPrinceOfSO Most would.

Why be responsible when you can have the government be responsible for you!

@MikeFal only place I'm going is to lunch

@MikeFal what's the difference between a predicate and a seek predicate?

@MikeFal this isn't about responsibility; universal healthcare would have never allowed @Zane to be in this situation

@FreshPrinceOfSO Technically a government healthcare program fucked me. I could have used the hospitals payment program and not had this problem. A non-profit would have picked up my tab but I got talked into MNCare.
^^not saying just sayin.
Love me some Info Graphics.
Alright heading out. Wish me luck in my attempt to drive blind.

Q: How does this CASE statement reach the ELSE clause?

PaulStockI need to load some test data into the Channel field on my Account table. The Channel can be one of 10 different values, so I thought I'd randomly assign the Channel one of the values using a CASE statement along with ABS(CHECKSUM(NewId())) % 10 like so: SELECT id, name, Channel = ...

I mean, I know how to avoid this behaviour, but why is it happening?

@Lamak i dont know. i'm still trying to figure out what holding, slashing, and boarding are in women's hockey.

@swasheck well, figure that out soon and help me understand what is going on

A: How does this CASE statement reach the ELSE clause?

Paul WhiteThe written form of the query is expanded to: Channel = CASE WHEN ABS(CHECKSUM(NewId())) % 10 = 0 THEN 'Baby Only' WHEN ABS(CHECKSUM(NewId())) % 10 = 1 THEN 'Club' WHEN ABS(CHECKSUM(NewId())) % 10 = 2 THEN 'Drug' WHEN ABS(CHECKSUM(NewId())) % 10 = 3 THEN 'F...

@swasheck Good. Did you get an answer to your question about the seek predicate?

@PaulWhite i got a link :) i read it. it kindasorta makes sense
> Seek Predicate is the operation that describes the b-tree portion of the Seek. Predicate is the operation that describes the additional filter using non-key columns.
> Based on the description, it is very clear that Seek Predicate is better than Predicate as it searches indexes whereas in Predicate, the search is on non-key columns – which implies that the search is on the data in page files itself.

is this a bug?
0
A: How does this CASE statement reach the ELSE clause?

CRAFTY DBATry casting to a varchar() before sending to the checksum(). There are some types that checksum() does not like. However, both your code and mine below generates 200K rows on SQL Server 2014 CPT2 without any invalid values. Check to see if this is a bug ... -- Remove table if object_id('#T') >...

8:36 PM
@PaulWhite can you confirm this statement for me?

@bluefeet there certainly is a bug in his if object_id check.

@swasheck Yeah, the Predicate is often referred to as a Residual Predicate. Think of it as a Filter that appears after the seek. Because that is what it is. Add OPTION (QUERYTRACEON 9130) to a simple query with seek predicate + predicate to see it more clearly. That trace flag disables pushing the Filter condition into the seek.

@PaulWhite >when you query a partitioned table on a UNIQUE constraint that is NOT the CI or Partitioning Key the optimizer doesn't know it's unique.
aw screw it

JNK
talk to @PaulWhite about the optimizer makes me feel super ignorant and should be avoided

@JNK just when I'm starting to think I know what I'm doing.

8:40 PM
@Zane you know NOTHING.

JNK
I mean I'm glad there are people like him around but I definitely notice my own inadequecies :)

@swasheck A unique constraint always provides uniqueness, and the optimizer knows that. If the constraint is partitioned (i.e. aligned) the partitioning column is silently added to the constraint.

@PaulWhite : Optimizer Whisperer

I can't believe I answered a question on SO.

@AaronBertrand : T-SQL Aficionado

@PaulWhite I blame @Lamak

@bluefeet Yes it was his fault.

What's wrong with this picture?

@AndriyM It's just the way searched CASE is defined.

@AaronBertrand this

Q: Site icons mucked up again

Martijn PietersLooks like the sprite offsets are out of sync again:

8:46 PM
@PaulWhite we have a unique, NC index (mistyped the "thing" ... it's actually not a unique constraint) that has to contain partitioning key.

ding ding ding
@PaulWhite dude, you went 6 months without answering a question.
Well, there.

@swasheck By default it will have been partitioned the same way as the underlying table. If you want a non-partitioned index, you have to explicitly ask for it.
@AaronBertrand I was doing so well.

@PaulWhite I remember reading a comment or answer from @MartinSmith about that NEWID() as used in this answer still can be evaluated more than once?, I think I'm imagining things
1
A: How does this CASE statement reach the ELSE clause?

D StanleyA new "random" number will be calculated for every WHEN clause - you can instead do it as a subqeury: SELECT ID, Name, Channel = CASE Rand WHEN 0 THEN 'Baby Only' WHEN 1 THEN 'Club' WHEN 2 THEN 'Drug' WHEN 3 THEN 'Food' WHEN 4 THEN 'Internet' ...

@PaulWhite you're welcome

@AaronBertrand yeah. wasnt a question but i put in a "?" for some inexplicable reason.

@swasheck sorry, the ding ding ding was that bluefeet knew about the meta question, the sprites in the picture I uploaded are offset, so super user has the SO icon, etc.

8:50 PM
@PaulWhite right. that's my understanding, but the explanation that is being given to the devs is along the lines of the statement that i said.
> When you supply a date_id (the partitioning key and clustered index), the optimizer will know that that value is unique. When you supply calendar_date, I don’t think the optimizer doesn’t know it’s unique (even with the unique NC index). Since the table is partitioned, date_id still has to be part of the calendar_date index. Then supplying just a calendar_date isn’t technically “unique”, even though we know that it is.

@PaulWhite or was it the other way around?, that maybe NEWID() isn't necessarily evaluated once per invocation?

@AaronBertrand no worries. when i read what i had originally typed the "ding ding ding" was appropriate

that statement just isnt sitting quite right with me and i dont want to go blowing things up when that's not going to solve our problem

@PaulWhite I actually always preferred a simple CASE to searched CASE precisely because I thought the input_expression evaluated just once. My world is shattered.

8:51 PM
@AndriyM Sorry :)

@PaulWhite oh, so it was actually the other way around. It might not get evaluated once per row

@Lamak You never know, in general. CASE comes with certain mostly-guaranteed behaviours of it's own.

That guy accepted the wrong answer.

Yup, thanks. I was mostly trying to remember the funky behaviour that you could get with NEWID()

@swasheck If the unique index is partitioned, it only guarantees uniqueness per (date, id) combination, yes.
@AaronBertrand I think he accepted the answer that worked for him - i.e. the one that answered the question he should have asked. I don't care - it's SO.

8:58 PM
@AaronBertrand Possibly because it suggested a solution

@PaulWhite yeah. i think i'm overthinking it. id is already guaranteed to be unique as it's the CI/PK,PartKey ... and the date is inherently unique but the optimizer doesnt necessarily know that. ok. it's making more sense to me. thanks for your patience

I guess. Just think it's rude to accept the later answer that essentially says the same thing.

@AaronBertrand As I said, it's SO :)

(Especially when the extra stuff is not what they asked.)

@PaulWhite maybe we should move it to DBA ;-)

9:00 PM
But, whatever. Not worthy of bringing up anywhere except here.

@AaronBertrand Agreed. On all counts.

We probably should have a canonical that describes the various behavior of functions/constants

go for it

The extra stuff makes it more useful for the public in general
