Their return was initially planned for June but has been repeatedly delayed due to various technical issues with the Starliner. They are now scheduled to return to Earth in late February 2025 with the SpaceX Crew-9 mission, as the Starliner is set to return uncrewed in early September 2024

what an exciting life you lead
you have 🚫👁️🦌
You are forbidden from looking at goats
Pretty sure that's a deer
@SeanGallardy How can you tell. It's 2 by 2 pixels
@Zikato That would be the title of a movie that would interest you
@Zikato It doesn't look like it's going to randomly try to eat anything including things nailed down

@SeanGallardy precisely. the goat is clearly defiant, and the deer is engaging in a v. regal stride.

What mice come with USB-C dongles?

Several mice models come equipped with USB-C dongles for wireless connectivity. Here are some notable options:

SteelSeries Prime Wireless: This gaming mouse is known for its high-end hardware and includes a USB-C dongle for low-latency wireless connectivity. It's particularly praised for its TrueMove Pro optical sensor, Prestige OM switches, and long battery life.

Keychron M3, M3 Mini, and M6: These mice are recommended for productivity and gaming, offering both USB-C and USB-A wireless dongles. They are especially popular among MacBook users due to the direct compatibility with USB-C p

I mean, it's a mouse

I'm slightly surprised gamers would tolerate a wireless mouse
Your monitor has more lag than your mouse
i would not use a wireless anything for that
@SeanGallardy Granted, but you know how they obsess over these things
I used to have a G9 gaming mouse with weights box and cord.
Newest monitors at CES hit 750Hz refresh rate
14:52
What in the name of The Great Bob is a 'weights box' for a mouse
@PaulWhite Yeah, most of it is ridiculous for "normal" people and even most gamers
Is it exercise related
@PaulWhite Add/remove weights to make the mouse "feel" right in your hand with movement
14:52
It's a gimmick
There was a sled in the mouse that you could add weights to.

Actual question, does anyone ever work with TDS 8?
15:03
Some people are at an advanced level of disliking DJT, yes
@PaulWhite Ha! I meant SQL Server :P
Needs more parentheses, brackets, chevrons, braces, and guillemets
o̶̲̽ͅn̶̹̯͋ ̴͚̪̕i̵͚̐̍t̵͙͓͘̕!̴̻͌
My answer would be no
15:05
sunny side up
I wonder if anyone uses it... seems to be a big thing that just kinda went nowhere
What was the big thing new for 8?
The following features or tools still use previous version of drivers that don't support TDS 8.0, and as such, might not work with the strict connection encryption:

Always On availability groups
Always On failover cluster instance (FCI)
SQL Server Replication
Log Shipping
sqlcmd utility
bcp utility
SQL Server CEIP service
SQL Server Agent
Database Mail
Linked Servers
Polybase connector to SQL Server
happens over TLS rather than spinning its own
hard to imagine why there weren't massive street parades
15:08
So no big thing I guess, other than:
TDS is a secure protocol, but in previous versions of SQL Server, encryption could be turned off or not enabled. To meet the standards of mandatory encryption while using SQL Server, an iteration of the TDS protocol was introduced: TDS 8.0.

The TLS handshake now precedes any TDS messages, wrapping the TDS session in TLS to enforce encryption, making TDS 8.0 aligned with HTTPS and other web protocols. This significantly contributes to TDS traffic manageability, as standard network appliances are now able to filter and securely passthrough SQL queries.
Things just don't get the recognition they deserve
speaking of PSP :P
moderately influential
Connection resiliency. I wonder why that's so necessary
SQL Server over Bluetooth, perhaps

European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were first introduced to New Zealand in the 1830s. They are found in most areas of New Zealand, and are considered to be one of the worst ecological and agricultural pests in the country. == History == Rabbits were commonly brought upon ships for their meat and fur. Rabbits were introduced by Captain Cook in 1777 in an island in the Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui. Rabbits were first introduced to the mainland New Zealand in the 1830s. They were released in Blenheim in 1858 and 1865. Silver grey rabbits were released near Kaikōura around 1862. Rabbits...

i have an optimizer complaint
don't feel special
are you sure it's not an algebrizer problem
16:37
sounds fractional
x marks the spot
in my mind, this query shouldn't require a sort in the plan
You really are off your meds aren't u
Ignoring PostTypeId, Score is sorted descending within CreationDate.
i.e. Scores will be ordered descending for each date
But you want scores ordered descending across a range of dates
The index can't deliver that
16:43
it just seems odd with the equality on posttypeid
Equalities help until you encounter an inequality
You encounter an inequality first
right
but i'd think score would be in order for each unique chunk of posttypeids
SELECT TOP (100)
    P.CreationDate,
    P.Score
FROM dbo.Posts AS P
WHERE
    P.PostTypeId = 2
    AND P.CreationDate >= {D '2008-12-01'}
    AND P.CreationDate < {D '2009-01-01'}
ORDER BY
    P.CreationDate,
    P.Score DESC;
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling It is, but only within each CreationDate value
Look at the results of the query above
oic
yes that makes more sense now
(and note in passing the residual predicate on PostTypeId)
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling It's one of the trickier visualisations with b-trees. It still catches me out from time to time
16:49
yeah that is a bit of a melon twister
It's why people retreat into rules-of-thumb about equalities and inequalities
that's what i was originally going into
i tried that last index just to see if there were a middle ground
no sort + a good enough seek for narrow date ranges
humbug
There is an element of sortedness that a skilled optimizer could look to take advantage of
But we don't have that, and it's not always clear it would be a win anyway
no it would be a neat trick
Some kind of merge union all sourced from the individual date values
So, you could avoid a sort technically
16:54
right
it's sort of like how a nested loops right join would technically be possible with a big enough spool
but who would want that in practice
At the cost of a merge union all with 2638627942 inputs
Might as well just do a sort
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling gr8 for demos
Might make merge join feel better too
17:32
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling For completeness:
CREATE INDEX i1 ON dbo.Posts (PostTypeId, Score DESC);
CREATE INDEX i2 ON dbo.Posts (Id, CreationDate);

SELECT
    P1.Id
FROM
(
    SELECT
        P1.Score,
        P1.Id
    FROM dbo.Posts AS P1
    WHERE
        P1.PostTypeId = 2
) AS P1
CROSS APPLY
(
    SELECT
        P2.CreationDate,
        P2.Id
    FROM dbo.Posts AS P2
        WITH (FORCESEEK(i2(Id, CreationDate)))
    WHERE
        P2.Id = P1.Id
        AND P2.CreationDate >= {D '2008-12-01'}
        AND P2.CreationDate < {D '2009-01-01'}
No sort
ha ha, i couldn't get a natural seek trying something similar either
i feel less dumbified now
did you get an index spool or a scan
I got an index spool once. I laughed
same
-laughter
+twitch
17:51
> WITH (FORCESEEK(i2(Id, CreationDate)))
that's fun syntax
i'd only ever seen it with the index specified
look at all that documentation
@PaulWhite Arguably that's what partitioning would do in some cases. Say you had a small number of TenantIds and you partitioned by it, with your index on (TenantId, PostTypeId, CreationDate) you could conceivably get a Merge with a Seek on each partition, giving a final ORDER BY TenantId, CreationDate DESC and no sorts.
A bit like Oracle's skip-scanning
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling Yeah, it did dumb things with just a FORCESEEK
But here it's never going to work because CreationDate and Score are both continuums (no particular discrete value to partition on)
@PaulWhite Isn't that basically what this one is doing?
ie lookup all possible values, then seek them in order
It's just an EXISTS test really
A silly query, was just for fun
One could also do an unordered insert to a temporary table with an index on score
Or just do the sort
well why not exists then?
18:00
Just for variety. Same plan
Also, you might have wanted to return CreationDate
SELECT
    P1.Id
FROM
(
    SELECT
        P1.Score,
        P1.Id
    FROM dbo.Posts AS P1
    WHERE
        P1.PostTypeId = 2
) AS P1
CROSS APPLY
(
    SELECT
        P2.CreationDate,
        P2.Id
    FROM dbo.Posts AS P2
    WHERE
        P2.Id = P1.Id
        AND P2.CreationDate >= {D '2008-12-01'}
        AND P2.CreationDate < {D '2009-01-01'}
) AS P2
ORDER BY
    P1.Score DESC
OPTION (QUERYTRACEON 9114);

ha ha
anyway, I have the ideal index 4 u
CREATE INDEX i1 ON dbo.Posts
    (Score DESC)
WHERE
    PostTypeId = 2
    AND CreationDate >= {D '2008-12-01'}
    AND CreationDate < {D '2009-01-01'};
It's a bit specific to that query though
