@ErikReasonableRatesDarling Took a punt
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling No, you'd need the user ID for the delete vote
I don't recall if flags are recorded in the public dump, but if they are that might be a helpful approximation.
Mod deletes without a flag are relatively rare.

@PaulWhite the kick is good
I suppose we'll never know for sure
But it is a scenario that can occur, so it has that value
i think this question is also good-enough

Q: Hash join hint returns an error when using local variable

JieLongThe query below is using the StackOverflow2010 sample database: DECLARE @Id INT = 18471 SELECT c.UserId FROM dbo.Comments AS c INNER HASH JOIN dbo.Users AS u ON c.UserId = u.Id AND c.UserId = @Id With a hash join hint, it returns the following error: Query processor could not produce a query p...

even though martin linked to the craig f blog in a comment
2:00 PM
As I recall, they addressed the plain failure issue described in Craig's post, but only for literals
I'll confirm
Mar 5 at 16:23, by Erik Darling
it seems one of craig's join demos no longer produces an optimizer error
One interesting consequence of that being you can't get an estimated plan with OPTION(RECOMPILE) but the query runs successfully and produces an actual plan
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling Yep, good recollection
Mar 5 at 18:10, by Paul White
@ErikDarling Try it in a database with forced parameterization on or https://dbfiddle.uk/5HOaBLVa
@PaulWhite i had recorded a video on join algorithm limitations, and that was one that i covered. but i didn't then and don't now have a good grasp on why it works in some cases but not others.
Which scenario specifically causes you trauma?
2:18 PM
i think the why of it working with literals/recompile but not with parameters
this was lucky

@ErikReasonableRatesDarling Well, it's like when SelOnSeqPrj only worked for literals. It's easier, and that was considered the main case. Eventually, after many years, they got around to enhancing Filter pushing past a suitable Window function for variables as well as literals. Maybe someone influential got to them
so it's just an implementation detail and not some weird relational no-no
correct
it's heaps more work to encompass variables and parameters
spaghetti code being what it is
literals are v str8forward
it's not a v satisfying answer, but it is a familiar one
yes it's disappointing
but accurate
take it up with SAM
I'm still hoping that work to parameterize variables will see the light of day
Last time I tried it, it still threw an access violation in useful scenarios
It's just weird and confusing that variables and parameters look exactly the same
I suppose everyone wishes for a longer summer
2:46 PM
i do wonder how many people rely on the behavior
it's yucky but probable
Well, presumably you'd have query hints, db scoped options, CL scoping and whatnot for that
I always sort of assumed PARAMETERIZE_VARIABLES would be opt-in
did you mess with the new stuff you found in azure at all
Only for a little while. Playing guess the weird syntax is not a fun game for long
Seems to be a top level hint like NO_PERFORMANCE_SPOOL and MIN_MEMORY_GRANT rather than an actual USE HINT string
you mean the query abort one?
Maybe AFTER is involved. MAX_DURATION seems not to be
Yeah
It's also possible it's only half-finished or requires a trace flag to activate, which you can't do on AZDB
There's a specific error message for it, but that doesn't mean much
There are messages for all sorts of things that never worked out
like writing in the sand~
8778 Query execution has been aborted because the ABORT_QUERY_EXECUTION hint was specified.
i think it's a nice touch
Seems like a pacifier in lieu of new T-SQL language features
Will no doubt be popular
Must mean a new major release isn't far off
2:59 PM
i've heard rumors swirling
Often the way with rumours
i think getting the vector stuff "done" and out to on-prem customers is the wind in the sails

Ok I accept the answer. — user547 9 mins ago
how kind
I was typing an answer to that when Sean posted his answer. How rude.
I've posted the addendum to my original answer anyway. Out of disrespect.
rude fight
if you want to be absolutely technically correct you may want to add a note about backing up to NUL
4:13 PM
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling That's a pretty hilarious concept.
Have you seen that done in AG environments?
yep
three that i can remember easily
The things you've seen would probably make my eyes bleed.
And make me lose my mind like a character from some Lovecraftian horror novel who just saw into the outer darkness.
4:42 PM
Sort of a funny story, I had a sales call with someone doing that, and when I brought it up they adamantly defended it being okay because of the AG. Didn’t hear from them again until a year later when a different person at the company wanted help recovering lost data.
It was not on any of the other AG nodes for some reason.
@JoshDarnell I like to spend my free time watching when you are going to write an answer and posting mine 1 minutes before you've completed.
@JoshDarnell I do it all the time... but it's for testing :D
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling Yup, that's pretty typical. People think multiple copies == no data loss.
I upvoted my favorite North Carolinian
@SeanGallardy I knew it!
@ErikReasonableRatesDarling I can sort of imagine getting lost in that twist of logic, but it's upsetting all the same.
