At least, I don't see any other activity on the post.

MS pays to bump. It's the newest payola scheme
Payola, in the music industry, is the illegal practice of payment to commercial radio in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day's broadcast, without announcing that there has been consideration paid in cash or in kind for its airplay adjacent to the recording's broadcast. Under US law, a radio station can play a specific song in exchange for money, but this must be disclosed on the air as being sponsored airtime. The term has come to refer to any undisclosed payment made to cast a product in a favorable light (such as obtaining positive reviews). Some radio stations report spins...

Ham Vockestatus-itshappening We're rolling out markdown support for tables here and on Meta Stack Exchange. Full details are in this announcement on MSE. Please play around with the feature and let us know if we missed anything over on Meta Stack Exchange. Here's the roll-out plan (and a table for you to ...

I know Max already linked the main meta post but this is a nice one box for the answer on our local meta

@PaulWhite I think Max V. did that because staring one-boxed content looks awful in the sidebar.

Anybody ever remember The Palace? An online community for nerds computer enthusiasts.
The Palace (or Palace Chat, Chat Palace, Palace) is a computer program to access graphical chat room servers, called palaces, in which users may interact with one another using graphical avatars overlaid on a graphical backdrop. The software concept was originally created by Jim Bumgardner and produced by Time Warner in 1994, and was first opened to the public in November 1995. While there is no longer any official support for the original program, a new client has been developed and is actively maintained by Jameson Heesen. Many chat servers are still operating and can be found on the Palace Portal...

@Johnakahot2use yes I would think so. I mainly wanted to highlight the local meta answer because I missed it at first

– never saw that one used before
Probably shows how often I catch things at the time of their happening

should be "it is" really seeing as apostrophes aren't supported
what can one do
no system is perfect

On the other hand, maybe they did mean to say "its happening"
Short for "time of its happening", I guess

@PaulWhite Is there a global trace flag for OPTION (FORCE ORDER)? (SQLSERVER)

1 hour later…
1:16 PM
@Johnakahot2use good lord I hope not.

1:33 PM
@John - out of curiosity, why are you wondering?
wow, I just looked at the Review queues and they're all "zero"

@MaxVernon 💪💪

planning on putting a hurt on someone? :-D

@MaxVernon Well we've got this application that uses the wonderful search predicate LIKE '%SEARCH_ITEM%' which results in bad execution plans.
No I have found out that the majority of statements is in the correct order.
However, SQL Server is not creating an execution plan in the order of the FROM ... clause. (Which is quite normal based on statistics and the wonderful LIKE)

ahh yes, join reordering. Works very well most of the time.

This I would like to tweak.

1:41 PM
you do regularly update statistics, right?
I know that's an entry level question but it's always worth asking.
we had auto update stats disabled corp-wide here when I started

We had a Microsoft SQL Server Premier Field Engineer in-house a couple of weeks ago for a Performance Tuining and Optimization Clinic (PTOC) and she said the same as what I had been saying for the last 4 years.

ahhh isn't that lovely. Did they end up listening?

Update Statistics (automatically) fails the good execution plans.

clearly the problem is in the query design :-D

@MaxVernon Yes, eventually. Had a meeting with the Tax Office and the supplier/vendor.

1:44 PM
I hope you pointed out that you'd been saying the same thing for 4 years?
and that you should get a raise because they didn't listen to you and that stressed you out

It's query design and database design and the obvious OOM / ORM issues.

such fun

@MaxVernon I got a pat on the back from the CAFI

so you want to disable the heuristics around join reordering to see if that will help?

@MaxVernon I want to try and turn off Query Optimization on another level.
We're already running in 110 compatability level with some Trace flags.
IF @DynaFlags & 1 = 1 DBCC TRACEON(2312,-1)	-- [Global | Session | Query]	Force use of Cardinality Estimator 12.x (2014) if database running in compatability level lower
if @DynaFlags & 2 = 2 DBCC TRACEON(2335,-1)
if @DynaFlags & 4 = 4 DBCC TRACEON(2371,-1)
if @DynaFlags & 8 = 8 DBCC TRACEON(4199,-1)
and database scoped configuration
Which Microsoft recommended we turn back off.
:-D
We basically removed the SQL Server 2016 engine features.
Such fun.
-- DBCC TRACEON(2335, -1) -- [Global | Session | Query]	Assume fixed amount of memory	[GLOBAL & STARTUP] | Can be left on
-- DBCC TRACEON(2371, -1) -- [Global]	Linear Update Statistics Threshold [GLOBAL & STARTUP]
-- DBCC TRACEON(4199, -1) -- [Global | Session | Query]	Enable QO Fixes [GLOBAL & STARTUP]
Bad database design and query looks like this:
better query looks like this:
forced order looks like this:
21 seconds
11 seconds
554 ms

1:54 PM
interesting. DTA indexes.
@Johnakahot2use that's definitely a win

I know...
The problem is as follows:
a) The Query Optimizer has no fucking clue how to do it right, because of design issues and ORM and more ...
b) The queries seem to be mostly in the best order
c) ...a) and b) don't work well together
So I'm looking for the magic wand.

@Johnakahot2use I hear NOLOCK speeds things up considerably.
/sarcasm obvs
@Johnakahot2use have you considered plan guides? Or perhaps forcing execution plans through Query Store?
or are there just way too many queries for that to be very helpful

2:12 PM
@MaxVernon you have to have a good one before the pinned ones work.
99.9% adhoc Queries
You can't pin what you don't have.

@Johnakahot2use right.

We were plenty into Query Store during the PTOC, but we had the same problem.
WE even started faking the meta information of the statistics to have certain tables up front.
Helps until it breaks.

@Johnakahot2use If you want forced order (and a nested loop preference) use SET FORCEPLAN ON

@PaulWhite That might help if we can get it into the application connection string/settings.
However, when I say 99.9% adhoc I'm referring to the application creating non-parameterized queries.
That's why I thought a global trace flag would do the trick.

Well there isn't a flag for what you think you want (not that I can think of anyway)
The most supported solution would be for the app to issue `SET FORCEPLAN ON;` at the start of its session.
Or before every query that needs it, whichever makes most sense.
It's a very unusual thing to want to do

2:26 PM
It's a very unusual application.
:-)

That may be why you have unusual problems

That is true.

Any WPF programmer here?

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a free and open-source graphical subsystem (similar to WinForms) originally developed by Microsoft for rendering user interfaces in Windows-based applications. WPF, previously known as "Avalon", was initially released as part of .NET Framework 3.0 in 2006. WPF uses DirectX and attempts to provide a consistent programming model for building applications. It separates the user interface from business logic, and resembles similar XML-oriented object models, such as those implemented in XUL and SVG. == Overview == WPF employs XAML, an XML-based language, to...
Sorry, no.

@McNets No, but I work with some, if you have a quick question I could pass along.

2:37 PM
doesn't sound very devops

so, ongoing fun, then.

@PaulWhite I have yet to reach peak DevOps. Maybe when I get into K8s.

Like Tim Post

@MaxVernon Well it started in 2016 when I first started at this place.
Same issues. ...LIKE %VALUE%'...`. Same recommendations: Remove LIKE %%

2:47 PM
@JoshDarnell No, I'm looking for good tutorials, books, blogs, videos, courses. I found some on youtube, but...
I'm planning to move to .NET 5 (maybe 6, it seems it'll be a big change)

@JoshDarnell Are you in the PFE branch of SQL Server?

@Johnakahot2use Sometimes the magic wand is disguised as a sledge hammer.

3:05 PM
@CadeRoux definitely.

3:15 PM
@McNets Ah, okay. Sorry, not much help there.
@Johnakahot2use I don't work for Microsoft, no.

Must resist

Am I too new to work for Microsoft? Is that it, Paul?

3:32 PM
mmmnnnph

@JoshDarnell Sorry. I was under the impression that you did.

@Johnakahot2use Ha, no worries at all!
I must be giving off that Microsoft vibe.

gasps for air

Oh let's hear it already.

@JoshDarnell The aura of perfection?
Why didn't Paul ever work for Microsoft?
Or did'l he?

3:38 PM
Does anyone else think this should be closed as a dupe of the related link?
I was going to hammer it, but thought I'd get a second opinion.

@Johnakahot2use Nope

@JoshDarnell The OP kinda says it is...

OPs can be tricksy

> This question has an open bounty and cannot be closed

Q: Allow bountied questions to be closed by regular users

Temani AfifI know there are a lot of questions asking the same thing and I know the proper way to close such question is to follow this: How can I close a question that has an active bounty? You flag it for moderator attention with the 'in need of moderator intervention' flag. Something along the lines of:...

I forgot about that.
This would require moderator collusion intervention.

Oh that one. Yeah I thought about refunding the bounty on the first day it appeared but it's a legitimate use, and their rep to spend if they want.
And the bounty was deliberately started after the comments so

3:50 PM
I just remembered why I didn't close it before. In case the OP was really interested in the answer to those three specific, related questions (vs the broader question answered in the other Q&A).
Which may or may not be reasonably answerable.

They certainly seem interested. 100 reps worth of interested.
@JoshDarnell tune in after 5 days to find out!
