How could you ever prove that without access to all the data where the ops go full toxic and then wrongfully delete the posts and ban people?

Hi. I don't see excel in destination of SQL Server Import Export Wizard. Any tips?
Download Sql Server Data Tools. Lets see if that solves it.

@MYGz I think you could do CSV, and then just open it in Excel. It's been a while though, I may be wrong.

no csv as well. Just flat file and other odbc connections.

@MYGz Excel can open flat files to. It has its own import wizard thingamajig. Not ideal, but if it's a one time thing.

Excel provides data import by sql query. But i have records in excess of 800K. So throws memory error.
I would require this often so checking how to add excel.

2:56 AM
@MYGz Why do you need the data in Excel? Like, what are you trying to accomplish?
Also, what version of Excel?

I have to send transaction data reports in excel that is verified by someone else. Excel 2016.

For some reason, I am thinking that I have an Excel doc with a SQL Server data source with more rows than that. But I might be wrong.
@MYGz oh, okay.

There is this problem of copying data from SQL server as well. Some times throws memory error if I try to copy more than 300k records
So I have to copy 200K rows at a time and then Excel dies after 800K. But with Export wizard I can go above 1M.

Have you tried exporting to flat file out of SQL Server, and then opening Excel and importing the flat file?
Otherwise, you may need to consider writing an SSIS package (which is all the export wizard is under the covers I believe).

@gbn Who's that?
Morning

gbn
@AndriyM dunno, random facebook image I liked
appeared in my feed, and I remembered the windows update discussion 2 days ago

Ahh, I thought it was from the Windows collection of images
Would seem strange for such one to have a face a random person

@gbn hmmmm

gbn
@AndriyM Have you seen my Avatar?
Well I thought it was funny :) Mrs gbn complained that Windows Update had been nagging for 2 weeks to reboot too

6:17 AM
You mean the one with a bloke with a mullet? I seem to remember to have seen it, yeah

I guess the "update" is on a nearly horizontal trajectory and destined for an "impact" on the perfectly working pc?

Ohhhh, I've only just realised what's happening there.
The "Windows 10 Update" caption slightly obscured the object and I didn't pay attention to it until I opened the image in a separate tab

being helpful:
As is the nature of the Internet sites and pages often vanish in black holes, never to found again. If you want to reference a site in your answer then that is fine, but it helps the community more if you add some of the relevant information in your answer. It saves it from being sucked into a black hole. Link only answers are removed: ...Answers that do not fundamentally answer the question may be removed. This includes answers that are: ...barely more than a link to an external site...hot2use 1 min ago
Is that worthy of a "not an answer" flag?

6:33 AM
Not sure about that but I would certainly add a comma after the "Internet" in the beginning

@AndriyM Dang, too late

Better yet, make the edit you're hoping the OP will, to demonstrate what you mean as a teaching exercise.
Sometimes that is less effort than writing a beautifully crafted comment
The alternative is to raise a flag and let at least five other people solve the problem for you
Just saying :)

Five?

I know, but logically seen: Every answer is an answer (even if it is a link)
The question was/is: What flag should I raise?

@McNets we have tweaked it so it's ever so slightly less horrible now

@JackDouglas On a slightly different note (but still related to dbfiddle), is there an easy way to copy all the batches as a single script, similar to how you can split a single script into batches?

10:34 AM
@PaulWhite I think git wasn't a terribly good choice of name for an application to begin with.

@AndriyM no but that does sound like a sensible feature

10:53 AM
> Torvalds quipped about the name git (which means unpleasant person in British English slang): "I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself. First 'Linux', now 'git'."
Git () is a version control system for tracking changes in computer files and coordinating work on those files among multiple people. It is primarily used for source code management in software development, but it can be used to keep track of changes in any set of files. As a distributed revision control system it is aimed at speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. Git was created by Linus Torvalds in 2005 for development of the Linux kernel, with other kernel developers contributing to its initial development. Its current maintainer since 2005 is Junio Hamano...

11:20 AM
also from the source code:
The name "git" was given by Linus Torvalds when he wrote the very
first version. He described the tool as "the stupid content tracker"
and the name as (depending on your way):

 - random three-letter combination that is pronounceable, and not actually used by any common UNIX command. The fact that it is a mispronunciation of "get" may or may not be relevant.
 - stupid. contemptible and despicable. simple. Take your pick from the dictionary of slang.
 - "global information tracker": you're in a good mood, and it actually works for you. Angels sing, and a light suddenly fills the room.

It is defined in sequelize as 'DataTypes.STRING', so 255 is not something that I have set personally. But then in pgAdmin, the column is listed as character varying (255). I did leave out the varying part, thinking it was redundant. Maybe that is what you are requesting? — David Gustavsson 23 hours ago
now that's a really unexplainable design decision from whoever wrote sequelize

@JackDouglas Currently there's a workaround using the Markdown feature. You need to apply some editing to get just the script but overall it's probably better than copying & pasting the batches one by one, especially when there are particularly many of them.
Something similar to the Markdown "button" but showing just the batches as a single script would seem to me just the thing, although I can see how someone later might request batch delimiters, and preferably customised too...

This made me giggle.

A: On a dual CPU server, is it normal for one CPU to run hotter than the other?

samozThe problem ended up being a poorly fit heatsink. Maybe poorly fit isn't the right description. Turns out, you have to put thermal paste on the heatsink, not the plastic cover that goes over the heatsink. After removing the plastic cover, the CPU is nice and cool, thanks everyone!

12:21 PM
@sp_BlitzErik that is terrible on so many levels, it's not even funny

12:35 PM
@Taryn which part?

I think it's just dumb.

@Taryn +1

the challenge, or the premise that stack overflow is toxic?

@sp_BlitzErik there are many things wrong with that challenge. SO has issues we're very aware of that.

The tweet he's responding to should just have been ignored
Sounds like one of those crybabies that assume minorities are excluded everywhere

12:43 PM
@sp_BlitzErik the response by both David and Tim captures most of it.

I think bluefeet can attest women are discriminated against by StackOverflow

@TomV is that tweet related to the challenge? (wondering)

dba.se is an egalitarian haven where only bad questions and answers are discriminated against
4

@sp_BlitzErik maybe so is worse I don't know, that tweet is so full of hyperbole

@TomV unless they were talking about SO meta ;)

1:13 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ It's a cesspit I agree, but does it discriminate based on background?

Why won't this work?
select * into NewTable from
;with Tb1 as (select * from tb where condition), select ... from Tb1 join tb2 condition
the second line is fetching correct records
I want to insert those records into newtable

@MYGz because is not valid syntax?

How can I insert the fetched records into newtable?
Post as a question?

I mean, replace the last select with select columns into NewTable from ...

1:29 PM
;with Tb1 as (select * from tb where condition), select * into NewTable from (select ... from Tb1 join tb2 condition)
Tried this, not working.

you don't have to use a comma after the CTE
I mean, you need to not use that

Thanks got it.

my bad

mine too, apparently
this room sure feels toxic this morning

I thought I have to select first and then insert
This worked:
   ;with Tb1 as (select * from tb where condition), select ... into NewTable from Tb1 join tb2 condition

1:45 PM
@JoeObbish it does?....is it morning already?
@MYGz I don't see how that could work...it still has that comma

It isn't valid syntax, but that's probably a consequence of not posting the real code

Oh. removed it already didn't correct it here.

@PaulWhite good thing you got here...it isn't morning, right?

The actual query is big. So kinda gets messy here. Posted as a question, actual query is there if you want to look.

@Lamak it is Friday morning :)

Q: Inserting fetched records into new table

MYGzI'm fetching some records with below query: ;with tb1 as (select * from tb where condition), select ... from tb1 join tb2 condition I want to insert the records fetched with the above query to a new table. How can I do that? I tried this: select * into NewTable from (followed by above query)...

1:50 PM
@PaulWhite ah dammit
now I envy you

@JoeObbish just removing unnecessary snarky comments

Making a snarky comment is against the rules?

There are no rules
(except jeagl)

@JackDouglas Is that a rule?

hmmmm

1:56 PM
sorry but someone had to say it and it is so usually Lamak

are you being snarky?

eeek

I was being snarky when I called you snarky

well this can't end well :)

the problem must be that there are no good role models in this room

1:58 PM
that would be a big part of it

@JackDouglas Jack Douglas was snarky. That must be the beginning of a new era.

my family disagree

ironic snark might be an exception to the non-rule
it's hard to know

@JackDouglas we are family!

some of us are more family than others

1:59 PM
sounds Orwellian

I think there might be some rules that we aren't allowed to speak about

ok

ah a fight club reference, I get that

so do I now

the heap is mighty recursive this morning

2:03 PM
I'm going to take a bit of a break from the heap. Bye!

Congrats Joe on your first clustered index!

@PaulWhite it took a moment....but I got it

@Lamak So you admit to getting the joke, and yet you still haven't explained it at great length? smh

@jadarnel27 that's not how things works around here
;)

check out the assertive new kid!

@JackDouglas Hey, Jack. :) -- How are you?

3:54 PM
Hi Paul :)
anyone know if MySQL 8.1 will be a major release or just bug fixes and the next major release will be 9.0?
I'm guessing 8.1 will be a major release
@PaulWhite now on db<>fiddle too: dbfiddle.uk/?rdbms=mysql_8.0

@JackDouglas That's great, but does it have to be the new default?
