@sp_BlitzErik Bragging rights? Maybe the NoSQL kids were being mean "You can't sit here. You don't do graph. Ha ha. Go sit over there with Larry."
More seriously, do you remember SQL Server 7.5? In-memory 1.0? The first iteration of columnstore? Everything starts somewhere, I suppose. Graph as it stands won't an RTM feature but come vNext.Next.Next it will mainstream. Applications will be re-written to take advantage and life will have moved on a step.
Oops! Missed the edit window. Feel free to sprinkle a few "be"s over that last post.

@MichaelGreen sure, you could also name a ton of features that have been abandoned or deprecated too ;)

12:59 AM
@sp_BlitzErik True dat!

bring back PINTABLE

I don't think this one's going away, though. Stonebraker gave a lecture back when showing how specialist DB engines will beat the "dinosaurs" every time, with lots of examples. One by one those specialist engines have been incorporated into dinosaurs. Graphs one of the big omissions to date. Not for much longer.

@MichaelGreen I find his claims a bit irritating sometimes. Just a bit ;)

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Truely: "column store is awesome!" said the man trying to exit a column store startup company.

@MichaelGreen Any public materials?

@MichaelGreen Sweet thanks

The pdf is the preliminary talking notes. Then "tables and metadata" to show SQL Server's implementation. "OrgChart" to cover a well-known example in the new syntax and highlight some of the deficiencies. "Neo4j Org Chart" does the same topic in a more mature tool to show what one possible future may hold.
"Neo4j Movies" is their canned example DB with 10k or so nodes & edges. Good for playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, and thinking how it would have to be done in standard SQL instead.

You are special, Joe.

OTOH, all answers have downvotes

@ypercubeᵀᴹ And you got one, I'm still not sure what is the desired result.

@TomV except the last one, it's (still) on 0/0. Whoever downvoted, hasn't seen it yet.
@TomV Yeah. "I can't be bothered reading and understanding. Fix my code."

Then it deserves a down-vote and a VtC as unclear.

Q: SQL Server clears plan cache and execution stats periodically

jitbitAfter upgrading SQL Server 2014 to 2016, the server keeps resetting cached execution plans and dm* views (like dm_exec_query_stats) etc. every couple of hours As if someone executes DBCC FREEPROCCACHE and DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS manually (except for no one does, it happens automatically). The sam...

I think there really is something to it, we've had too many similar questions here and on so, usually well documented and I'm not sure the standard answer applies any more
maybe they're only zero-cost plans or something

yey → Trash

@TomV I've heard multiple reports as well. I'm not sure anyone has been able to provide a stable repro though, so no idea what the progress is on any sort of fix.

12:33 PM
I think I have witnessed it myself, some plans that I could no longer find in the cache while I expected them to, but I had no repro and no time to investigate them and chalked them up to a stats update or something

i've seen the plan cache clear out frequently when min and max memory have the same value set
but it's nearly impossible to repro
just happens ~sometimes~

If it's not documented or reproducible I doubt we can get the details of the eviction implementation

3:14 PM
Lets start saying you have a SMALL table - nothing large here. Second - how are you going to query? The select speed is determined by the RIGHT index, and the right index by the queries. Your current index will help if you look by DATETIME and THEN (!) filter by x and y. Only. 3 seconds is plenty, btw.... on decent hardware I Would expect way way way below 1 second responses. And 500 inserts per second - I think I do 70.000 per second on my main insert application. Small. Really. THis is 2013, not 1990. — TomTom Dec 9 '13 at 21:13
So, you have a small SQL Server table (less than 50% of the RAM of a lower end database server these days). With low activity (50.000 inserts per 300 seconds is not that much). And use an oudated SQL Server version (which one: express, standard or enterprise). — TomTom Dec 8 '13 at 9:53

70,000 inserts per second?

in a longish ban currently, but I still have to find at least one phone-y comment

@dezso only banned on SO

@dezso IIRC tomtom's phone was famous in serverfault too

So many things wrong. * Your database is tiny. Seriously. * 4 seconds on your machine indicates SERIOUS Problems already. * other maching an unqualified long time - really? Put a number there. But 270k not too large rows do not take 4 seconds to load. Unless you talk seriously underpowered mobile phone or something like that. — TomTom Feb 25 '16 at 14:29
the closest so far

3:29 PM
he used to say that he ran databases on his phone?
or that his phone was more powerful than some people's servers?

2 million? That is like asking "you need storage space for a5 usd bill". 2 million rows you can stora on any hard mobile phone unless this is an image heavy column. — TomTom May 6 '14 at 18:09

Q: Burninate [repair]?

mgorvenrepair seems like a meta tag to me (repair what? the RAIDs? the LAMPs? TomTom's phone?). Should it be killed, and if so, how?

that's a long ban for a guy who has 2k answers

Regarding performance capacity - you have a small table if it is less than a million rows, and large starts maybe at 100 million. Get real here - a couple of hundred rows per day is something my smartphone was able to handle, some years ago. — TomTom Jul 7 '12 at 14:38

@Philᵀᴹ what's the motivation for that statement?

@MaxVernon 40k views is quite a lot

@Lamak yah, in one month. I was very surprised by it.

7:19 PM
@MaxVernon it's your new phone ;)

lol!
its true - my old phone never asked me to put anything on google maps ;-)

@MaxVernon yeah, it's quite eerie how good it knows where I am

@Lamak I love how it keeps asking me to confirm I was at a given location on my timeline. I'm pretty sure Google knows more about me than anyone else, even though I keep using DuckDuckGo.

@MaxVernon yeah...the timeline can be pretty off sometimes though

my old Android kept thinking I was in Moscow, then the next minute in Vancouver. It was quite strange.

7:26 PM
@MaxVernon have you liked the phone?

@Lamak overall I'm very happy with it. I really like the camera, although I wish it had a dedicated camera button (the double-tap-on-volume-button alternative sucks).
The camera has two lenses, one is an extremely wide angle lens offering almost 180 degree field of view

@MaxVernon people with fuck all knowledge that can do a SELECT * appear to be Data Scientists these days, so i’m assuming we all earned the title many moons ago before we knew anything :)

@MaxVernon forgot which one it was...LG?

@Philᵀᴹ ahhhh. Well, I suppose in some way if you know how to run a query you're miles ahead of those that don't.
@Lamak LG V20.
plus I really like that the case is metal... and it has a removable battery.
I got a second battery from LG in Korea via Amazon for like $45 and use it all the time.
plus the High Def audio DAC is a treat for listening to music.
@Lamak that photo has had 61 more views since I posted the question.
so bizarre

7:45 PM
@MaxVernon in line with the 100+ per day average

@TomV its getting nearly 1500 / day.

@MaxVernon that's a lot
was it a very good photo?
@MaxVernon I see a total of 39,105 views for all your photos
I think

@Lamak where are you seeing that?

@MaxVernon I clicked the link in your question, and then click in your profile....

ahhh, yes, I did notice that discrepancy. It's strange.

8:00 PM
it shows this:

yah, but if you scroll way down - it shows this:
the two photos in the middle are identical, one has 144 views, and the other has 44,124
so, either the total shown at the top of my photo list is incorrect, or the view count on that one photo is whacked.

@MaxVernon No, I can't see the views per photo

oh - but you can see it my screenshot though :-)

@MaxVernon you look good in these thigh highs
i'm gonna stop scrolling here though

Rob Farley might see it as well
We've had long conversations about flow before

it's one of my favorite operators

@PaulWhite I'm amazed either of you survived.

I'm going to go make caramel

@JoeObbish I think Rob has a deck about his favorite operators where he mentions it, it's pretty easy to hunt down.

@JoeObbish Mine too

9:45 PM
@Lamak we'll see tomorrow!

I guess I'll post my answer in a while, but I'm unsatisfied with it
it performs well with guaranteed results but no flow distinct

Hmm maybe that new user comment guidance should be shown to established users as well
@JoeObbish That seems like a bit of a flaw
Given the wording of the question I mean
Still, I won't discourage people from writing answers in answers.

I think requiring an operator that can't be guaranteed is a flaw in the question, but hey
Judging by the plan XML they're using 2014. An answer could bomb depending on compatibility level.

@sp_BlitzErik 💣💥?

@PaulWhite just when I think the romance is gone.

9:58 PM
A good answer would implement Flow Steam Aggregate in C and integrate it into the Query Processor

I'll email Joe Sack about that

Adaptive Flow Aggregate

Why wouldn't a straight clustered index seek be the most optimal?
DECLARE @fromUpdateId int;
SET @fromUpdateId = 1135526;
SELECT DISTINCT TOP 100 ObjectId, UpdateId
FROM Updates
WHERE UpdateId > @fromUpdateId
ORDER BY UpdateId, ObjectId
I must be missing something

But yeah you're not going to get ordering guarantees with hash

in my experience hash never organizes anything

10:02 PM
We're still taking about execution plans right?

oh wait. that's something else.

Thought as much

@sp_BlitzErik it is tagged with 2014, indeed.

@MaxVernon Submit it as an answer you'll soon find out

I think this question falls into the not even wrong category:

Q: How to add 50 empty rows in the database table from the top?

PreethiI have a database with multiple tables in mysql workbench. I need to add 50 empty rows from the top of the table. How do i achieve it?

@PaulWhite I have a loop hole
"which is why I'm after a flow distinct, unless there's something better I don't know of. "
the burner malfunctioned at a critical moment for the caramel :(

@JoeObbish Have you consulted a physician?

@MaxVernon curse your local variables

Ahhhh
The answer is out there - make fun of me!

@MaxVernon He wants only distinct ObjectId values

10:12 PM
@MaxVernon because there might be 2 or more rows with same ObjectId and different UpdateId - and they want 100 DISTINCT ObjectId?

A: How do I provide an execution plan to someone for analysis?

John Eisbrenerdbfiddle.uk does a great job of displaying execution plans for SQL Server, Oracle, and Postgres. The default page (for each respective RDBMS) lists instructions which should be pretty self explanatory. It even handles the graphical XML output quite well for SQL which I wasn't expecting at all.

@PaulWhite he went to the doctor and guess what he told him?

@sp_BlitzErik Sing me the answer

I'm way too thrilled picturing you singing it now

10:28 PM

10:53 PM
@JoeObbish Small point, isn't your text logic backwards "minimum Objectid per UpdateId" also the not exists implements max not min? Oh and the edit to the question left out a punctuation mark

11:09 PM
@PaulWhite Hmm... I hope not
there can't exist a such such that u2.UpdateId < u1.UpdateId
which means that u1.UpdateId is the min
do I have that wrong?
fixed ?
(the question mark)

@JoeObbish Oh yes that's right misread it myself!
Moving from phone to laptop shortly
text should say minimum updateid per objectid though yes?
That and old age

11:32 PM
@PaulWhite yes
