IT IS I, EVAN.

A: Discouraging "soul-selling" for hats

bluefeetWinter Bash and hats are the fun way that we like to end the year. We very carefully try to come up with triggers based on normal user actions on the sites, like asking questions, answering, commenting, and many others. Gaming for the hats is always a problem, which is why we try to make sure ...

General FYI. Not a problem here so far AFAICT.

+1

3:04 AM
I made a hat too.

@bluefeet I was very pleased to earn the Blue hat today. Clearly I did something 10 times, or 10 things happened to something I did. 10 is a beautiful number, I hear.
@EvanCarroll LOL

@PaulWhite If you are interested as well, I have shared my take on the previously discussed question :)

@MDCCL Oh thanks! Yes I'll check it out now.

It's time to go christmas shopping... BRB

3:20 AM
@PaulWhite hints are fun. And so are hats.

A: When to add another lookup table for the same field

MDCCLAlthough RecipeCategory and IngredientCategory have very similar names and attributes, they are, in fact, two different types of entity, because each of them (a) has a specific business domain meaning, (b) holds distinct kinds of interrelationships and (c) entails a particular set of constraints....

6:23 AM
@bluefeet Is it as simple as the tenth upvoted comment in the Hat Dash period?

6:36 AM
@PaulWhite AFAICT everybody is "gaming for hats".
@swasheck nasty

@hot2use Not everybody. Some people aren't interested in hats at all. Anyway, the point is that doing stuff you'd normally do (or should be doing) is fine. Which is what seems to be happening around here, for the most part.
Hey @MikaelEriksson any progress on that string split thing you mentioned?

Glad you mentioned it. I was testing it wrong and discovered what I believe is an optimisation for multi line table valued functions.

@MikaelEriksson As an aside, congrats on 100k at SO, and I'm surprised you're not wearing a hat. You used to be famous for it.
@MikaelEriksson The thing about msTVFs and string splitting has come up before.

Two consecutive executes of the function with the exact same params uses the result from the previous execution. So with identical strings to split in a table that was of course really fast.
It was however on par with the built in when only using one big string.
@PaulWhite Thanks, I'm wearing my silver fork hat. Kind of invisible perhaps.

@MikaelEriksson In a lazy spool you mean?
@MikaelEriksson Oh are you? I take it all back then :)

6:49 AM
Nope or kind of only it looks to be part of the TVF operator. Code coming up.

Didn't expect that to onebox! What's the code supposed to show?

This is the result I get.
2016-12-22 07:43:28.293
2016-12-22 07:43:28.293

Identical timestamps for the same param value.
Or if you do
select R.ID, R.D
from (values(1),(2),(1),(2)) as T(ID)
cross apply dbo.GetRows(T.ID) as R
you actually get different timestamps.

No spool in sight as far as I can see in the plan. But there is of course the return table that is stored somewhere and that looks to be reused if it was created with the same params.

But only if the same param is immediately following. Curious.
And it's consistent with the time it takes to return the results. If I have all 1s, for instance, it's much faster than if it's 1,2,1,2.

7:05 AM
Yes. Holds one result set just in case you want it again.
Tested in SQL Server 2005 - 2016 and it is the same all over.

@MikaelEriksson I'll look into this in detail after dinner, cheers.

7:25 AM
@PaulWhite Enjoy your dinner. BTW, just read the blog post. Looks like what I found here has something to do with the reason he sees good performance of the MLTVF. I have not tested but since performance is fixed with FORCE ORDER and stuff it looks like the split function was invoked multiple times (perhaps on the inside of a nested loops join) with the exact same param and so not executed more than once in the MLTVF case.

7:48 AM
@hot2use The way I see gaming for hats is exploring new features that you are reminded of by a hat, or as Paul said "things you should be doing" such as editing a question to have it reopened, or flag more comments or something

8:19 AM
morning

@TomV Thanks but I can share the code here because my boss doesn't allow me to do that. — VansFannel 50 secs ago
"I'm comparing the time between 2 if statements, but won't show you what gets executed inside the if block"

8:48 AM
@MikaelEriksson Oh I see what you're saying now. Yes, the TVF acts as it's own lazy spool. If you look at the operator properties in the execution plan, you will see it has rewind (replay previous results) and rebind (generate new results with changed parameters) properties.

@PaulWhite Yes, I see that now. Thanks.

@MikaelEriksson It's quite a long time since I thought about this stuff, but I'm pretty sure the TVF can't act as part of a "performance spool" i.e. where there's a sort on the outer input of the nested loops join, to optimize rewinds.

@PaulWhite You mean like this?

BTW you can occasionally see the same thing (rewinds and rebinds) with the other non-spool operators that support it e.g. Sort and Remote Query. It's sort of documented somewhere in BOL.

It does use the rewind in that case.

8:58 AM
@MikaelEriksson Oh yes I didn't think that was possible. On which version do you see that?

2014, 2016
And 2005 so I guess all version.

@MikaelEriksson Oh! You have an order by T.ID. That is cheating. By perf spool, I mean when the optimizer introduces a sort to optimize for rewinds, not for output order.

Ahh, no not auto sort hehe.

@MikaelEriksson For example:
SELECT R.ID, R.D
FROM
(
	VALUES
		(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),
		(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),
		(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),
		(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2),(1),(2)
) AS T(ID)
  CROSS APPLY dbo.GetRows(T.ID) as R
OPTION (QUERYTRACEON 8691);
(Updated to better match your originall).
With the (redundant) lazy spool introduced by 8691, there's a sort on the upper input, without it, no go.
@TomV Thank you for the bounty!

9:23 AM
@PaulWhite I know you don't need the rep, but it's a way to show appreciation for the effort put in the answer
The rep you earned will probably end up being bountied on another question at some point :)

Cheers. Yes, most likely :)

@PaulWhite Thanks, never heard of that trace flag I think.

@MikaelEriksson It's not well-known. Sort of the opposite of 8690.

No luck with google on 8691 but found something on 8690. My usual go to source for trace flags did not have either of them. sqlservice.se/updated-microsoft-sql-server-trace-flag-list

9:40 AM
@MikaelEriksson Yeah I don't think I've mentioned it publicly before.
Oh yes I have. In here. And it led to this question: dba.stackexchange.com/q/27704/1192

Q: I just got two hats, why?

SantaI just received two Hats, but I'm not sure what I did to get them. Not that I don't want them, just curious. Especially since I got them on a site I'm not too active on. Following are the Hats Just Here for the Hat Where in the World Edit: So there is a description under each hat, from which...

11:02 AM
3 . 2 . 1 ... Bam!

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Bam?

Steward badge and 24 hat

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Ooo lovely!

11:22 AM
@PaulWhite just wondering if you have mentioned that in the hat chat room?

@bluefeet I wasn't sure of the correct place to put guesses.

Well, we aren't confirming guesses but a good guess should go in there so others can discuss it

@bluefeet Ah OK. So how does the meta with the reveal get updated?

By the way, I love the blue feet you are wearing

Thanks I was very pleased to get it. Works well on my avatar I think.
I feel a strange urge to pivot something.
2

11:26 AM
@PaulWhite once they confirm a trigger works, they are putting it in the answer as a spoiler.
@PaulWhite it's the feet, they make you do odd things

@bluefeet Ah so the Ye Olde Hat Shoppe people are doing it. I see.

@PaulWhite Yeah. They have a google doc that you can add a guess if you are confident.
Or just mention the guess in that chat room.
I think there are quite a lot that will try to test and confirm

I actually don't care very much about the mechanisms, I just like to get fun hats.
The 6 was a nice surprise, but I am loathe to dump the blue feet.

yeah, 6 and that 8765432 are still unknown how they are gained, I think
I think you get the 8765432 by deleting a lot (10?) of old comments (or perhaps upvoted comments)

11:42 AM
@PaulWhite coincidence
that'd result in far too much vandalism if that were a trigger

I guess. Thanks for confirming or denying.

I have to confirm or deny things that could result in damage

Aha! ;)
It must be fun coming up with hat mechanisms.

11:55 AM
It can be. We'll always have people who abuse things for hats, the trouble is coming up with things that won't result in a big mess in the process.
But it's getting harder to come up with new triggers. Many get recycled each year with a few tweaks
Plus with so many people participating, the queries need to run quickly so there is also a big performance factor in deciding on them

Result: Hi-resolution images from 127 million miles away.

AT&T's budget in 2011... $20 billion.
Result: Still can't get any signal from my bathroom.

12:23 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I have no idea how I got 6, I VtC some, flagged some comments, edited and reviewed a bit
6 thank you's removed while editing the post otherwise since hats, maybe
Or 6 edit descriptions but I would think I added a comment more times
And VtC/down-vote a question that was seld-deleted aferwards, I think @TypoCubeᵀᴹ voted on the same question earlier

A: Why is my index not being used in a SELECT TOP?

Paul White If I let the server decide which index to use, it picks IX_MachineryId, and it takes up to a minute. That index is not partitioned, so the optimizer recognizes it can be used to provide the ordering specified in the query without sorting. As a non-unique nonclustered index, it also has the k...

2:46 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Hello yes?
...
Is this visible only to me?

Nope

Sometimes I think it must be.

@PaulWhite Hello !

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Hiya!

@PaulWhite so much subtle snark :)

2:48 PM
@PaulWhite The custom one? No worries, I had no idea what to put there

@TomV Well it wasn't clear cut at all and I really had to think about it.

@PaulWhite I expected more comments would be gone :)

@PaulWhite Thanks for the revision (lots of misspelings that I didn't analyzed carefully, ha ha). Do you consider that formatting the business rules formulations with monospaced font reduce readability? I think it's important to highlight them in a special way, since they are the main basis for the definition of a given structure (although I really dislike the grey background, as discussed in meta some months ago). I'd really like to know your considerations about this point.

@MDCCL I have a thing about <code> formatting "abuse".

@MDCCL do you mean "a special way"?

2:51 PM
Goodness knows I hate the formatting at the best of times, but I lost that battle.

War
@jcolebrand soz i missed that ... the idea is to not have credentials listed anywhere in any files, so if someone got on the application (a hacker) they couldn't get the details they needed to compromise our db server

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Yes, a special way.

@TomV As I say, not straightforward at all. Comments I nuke are usually pretty obviously past sell by date, but still pondering on that one.

@PaulWhite And it got me one flag closer to a gold badge hat

@TomV Yay!
@bluefeet Answers in comments drive me nuts. Don't get me started.

2:53 PM
@PaulWhite ok, ok, I won't

On the upside, I got an accepted answer out of it and didn't feel at all bad, not even for a moment.

@PaulWhite I've been thinking of a business rule highlighting that looks less invassive, but the formatting tools available are not as rich as I'd wish. Thanks for adding the comment clarifications to the question, too, they were required to make the situation more complete.

@MDCCL Yes I like to end up with a clear question and answer, whatever the mess might have been in the interim.
@MDCCL You do very well with what's available.

@MDCCL what Paul said ^^
I continue to be amazed sometimes
I wish I went to school long enough to grasp theory as well as you do

@TomV how many flags have you got now?

2:59 PM
Hm I just earned the Amped Up hat without sharing any links on social media.

ooh, 489. Pretty close.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ 11 to go, or 19 close vote reviews

@PaulWhite you did? Nice

So you guys can get to work and fill up the close vote queue to help me :)

@TomV it would be easier to go through my long list of comments and flag them for "obsolete"

3:00 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Weird. I thought about tweeting a question earlier but never got around to it. Perhaps Hats detect thoughts now? Bit creepy.
Ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo!!!!

@PaulWhite when did you get the Amped hat? Today?

@PaulWhite Too lazy to look on meta to see if my bounty helped that

@TomV Thanks a lot. I wish I had more time to improve my grasping of theory as well, but I really do my best (I feel more passionate as I dig in more deeply). I wish I had more time to improve my knowledge about physical aspects as well, particularly regarding SQL Server. The good thing is that DBA.SE is a great place to learn new things continuously.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Literally about 2 mins ago.

3:02 PM
@PaulWhite it's just sharing - not limited to social media

@TomV Yes it did. I'm at 225 for the day including bounty.

"share a link to a question on social media that gets 5 clicks" That description may not be accurate.

@bluefeet The meta desc says social media. Like that ^
Just me and Aaron are Epic. Ha. Suck on that losers!

@PaulWhite it's using your share link anywhere - similar to the badges

@bluefeet Yeah I understand, just whining. I use 'share' a lot because it's easy.
Still any hat is a good hat.

3:05 PM
It was initially supposed to be limited to a social media portal but we decided against it and obviously never changed the wording

Those hats make it difficult to identify who is who, just like in real life.

@bluefeet Is the delay in awarding badges one of the reasons people might have to wait to get a hat after "qualifying"?

@PaulWhite Yes, we want to make sure people qualify. But we also do it for performance

@bluefeet is this by chance more accurate? "someone shares a link of my post and gets 5 views ..."
Because I shared a link to Paul's answer and he got the Amped

Confirm/deny.

3:10 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ no, if you share it and it gets 5 clicks, you get the hat. Not the owner of the post
@PaulWhite it's a public hat I can confirm fully

Perhaps the link was shared earlier and got 5 clicks only recently

I could probably look up to see how @PaulWhite got it

Fiery++
@bluefeet That would be interesting and I'm happy for you to share details publicly if that's needed.

@PaulWhite You shared this
6 hours ago, by Paul White
Oh yes I have. In here. And it led to this question: http://dba.stackexchange.com/q/27704/1192

@bluefeet I asked because I shared the link twice, in chat rooms (one is here, today) but the onebox effect may have taken off the number that shows it's my share?

3:16 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ You seem to answer in comments quite often :p

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I'm guessing the one-boxing removes the share details

@bluefeet Yes it seems so. But it doesn't explain how Paul got the hat. But the one you mention above, that Paul posted, explains it.
@TomV Feel free to post an answer, if some comment is good enough. I usually do it when I'm not certain or I don't have time, on a phone, etc

@bluefeet Oh yes it has the 1192 on the end. Thanks.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ It's more nuanced than that, some of your comments seem to steer the discussion in a way that helps the author so they can solve their own issue or see the error of their ways
And I'm not in the same domains as you so I wouldn't convert it in an answer myself

@TomV You can a CW answer, as Paul does so often ;)

3:25 PM
@War when you're available, let's chat
Unless you already got it sorted

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Sometimes I wish I could CW then dissociate my name from the answer.
Have it owned by Community or Anonymous.

Marshal achieved, I'll quit bothering the mods now with my flags and clean up a bit more later
Time to go shopping

@PaulWhite Feature request at meta.SE ?

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ No one would care.
925++

3:44 PM
Why 925? The meta page didn't explain what the significance/correlation was to silver

chaos day today

@billinkc The Bert & Ernie thing completely passes me by, I must say.

4:07 PM
@billinkc it's a common thing. Seeing 925 immediately rings silver to me.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Are you into coins?

@billinkc I should have named it .925 but too late now

@War Just wanted to revisit what I was saying about the config thing. Let's take it to a separate chatroom so we don't clutter up this room...

@TomV I am but this is unrelated. I've heard "925" related to jewelry more than coins

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I've heard it in relation to coins mostly
let's not start about the latin union's resemblance to the Euro :)

4:10 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ BTW I use <pre> deliberately to avoid the default SQL syntax highlighting for non-code items.

@PaulWhite Ah, sorry, I removed some <pre> recently. Was it your additions?

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Yes no worries, just explaining in case it was helpful.

What of the two following sentences sounds better in English: (1) "The Car table has two columns", or (2) "The table Car has two columns". As I see it, option (1) is like saying The table of Car has two columns, and option (2) is like saying The table named Car has two columns. I have seen both kinds of sentences in database literature, but what sounds better or more natural in common English? What should be prefered and why?

@MDCCL Both are perfectly valid, but I would opt for the second one and I'll explain why briefly

@MDCCL Both read fine to me. My initial impression is I prefer the first. And not just to be contrary.

4:14 PM
By putting the descriptive word table before the proper name Car you give context more quickly. It's not a big differentiation, but that's the reason I would choose that when writing about databases. In future reference in the same locality of text, I would then only refer to it as either "the table" or "Car"

I will say that I intensely dislike "wanna" and "kinda" though.

@PaulWhite Thnx, I'll have in mind. I try to use the <lang no-lang> thing but I can never remember the exact syntax

@PaulWhite maybe some of us are kinda masochists and wanna make people squirm ... or is that a sadist, I can nrever remember ...
4

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ <!-- language: lang-none --> I can type it in my sleep but <pre> is easier so long as there are no html tags involved.
@jcolebrand Hm I've never flagged another mod's chat message before :)

@PaulWhite hahahahahahahahahahahaha

4:16 PM
Actually "kinda" is "sorta" OK, but "wanna" makes my skin crawl.
23 hours ago, by MDCCL
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ It's not indispensable, but I've seen several references with slightly different wordings of the normal forms (1NF, 2NF and 3NF) all over the web, and I tend to be kinda picky with those things. I wanna have the real Codd's definition, it's mainly a personal liking

@jcolebrand Thanks for sharing your considerations, they are very substantial.

@PaulWhite Trolling you and putting in a typo, I starred that :)

Downvote. I must have pissed someone today: dba.stackexchange.com/a/158732/993
I should add that explanation I promised!

@MDCCL I'm not sure that substantial is the best choice of word there, but I take your meaning.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Maybe that's my way of reminding you :)
(and it worked)

4:20 PM
@jcolebrand I see substance there, in fact :)
@PaulWhite I kinda avoid them, generally speaking

Thank you. I'm trying to decide why substantial isn't colloquial speech in this case.

@TomV Me too.
@MDCCL :)

I feel like what you want to say is "thank you for your considerations, they are insightful" maybe? I know that your question is about colloquial English phrasing, so I'm only offering this feedback as a way to assist in that regard. Your meaning was still valid and well intentioned so there is no issue there, just thinking about conversational English.

If the text hadn't had the monospace Car I might be more inclined toward Cole's point of view.

@PaulWhite Yeah, I'm not sure how that will work in all cases. I know that I have some issues with that in Word, for example. Like sometimes I just want to jot my notes, not think about all the nuances of formatting.

4:23 PM
However, it is hard to give too much credence to the opinions of someone with only 5 hats.

@PaulWhite You know ... I'm not one to game the system :p #IShouldTotallyGetMoreHats

Yes you should. We might catch SO.pt on the leaderboard.

wait, leaderboard?

@PaulWhite Interesting. See how beautiful the monospaced part looks without any background highlighting? ;)

killer of fun, slayer of joy.

I know, I suck. The others here raise the average significantly.
Hats are fun and bring joy though.

Not really. Most of them suck even more than you and have fewer hats.. statistically.

5:16 PM
That's an interesting point.

Okay @PaulWhite I pushed it to six, may even have more once other timers run, who knows.

@jcolebrand Which one did you get? The NeverEnding Story?

Aye

I suppose I should be supportive of Hat efforts, even if they involve ... Dev Story.
So: YAY! \o/

lol
I'm trying here :p

5:20 PM
I'm really not sure that I'm going to get many more. I think this happened last year as well.
Peaked too early :(
There should be a peaked cap for that.

@PaulWhite hopefully not in real life too

@Lamak I knew someone would say that ;)

see?, you are even a telepath

Again. Predicted.

5:22 PM
scary

uncanny.

@jcolebrand Voting using the app is an easy hat.

@PaulWhite you get a hat for that? i think i may have accidented into that one

@swasheck Seven votes from the app, yes.

@swasheck your subconscious wanted the hat

5:24 PM
ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i just did like 2
@Lamak i have no subconscious. there is only conscious and unconscious
3

@swasheck You don't have Cutting The Cord right now. But it is 5 short votes away!

finally saw the new star wars movie last night. best character development yet. amazing number of plot holes and inconsistencies

@swasheck Oh good. I'm very much looking forward to seeing that.

@swasheck are you in it?

Shame two of the biggest cinemas locally were shut down by the earthquake.

5:26 PM
@Lamak no. unfortunately

Better than having a car park collapse onto you half way through I guess.

@PaulWhite that would be an abrupt end to a show

And you'd die not knowing how the movie ended!

yeah. not seeing the conclusion would be the death of me.

@TomV was one of the comments flagged in this q?: dba.stackexchange.com/questions/158865/…

5:29 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Yes but not by anyone here.

you should immediately lose rep (and hats) for answering a mysql question

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I can't tell you who, but I think I can say the concern was about encouragement to post sensitive data. Nonsense of course, but the only options are delete or dismiss for comment flags, and for reasons I can't get into, delete was the right option.

5:36 PM
zing

@PaulWhite No problem. It just steered an uncomfortable conversation with the OP. I should have been more careful

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ yes. exactly. that's so embarrassing. i was young and it was an experimental time of my life

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Seems to have turned out OK in the end. I hadn't seen the later comments.

I deleted the sarcastic one.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Which amusingly originally had a typo :)

5:39 PM
Ha yes. Ofering typos all the hat season, that's me alright.

Definitely honouring the name.

are "u"s that cheap that you just give them away for free now?
what's next? "colouring"?

@swasheck Ounly oun Fridauys.

@PaulWhite is that Canadian?

whoush
Probably an accent joke I guess.

5:43 PM
or i'm a moron

I love reading people's work arounds for non-existent problems.
