Q: Rename [google-sql-cloud] to [google-cloud-sql]

Misha BrukmanThe proper name of the product is Google Cloud SQL but the tag name is currently google-sql-cloud (wrong) rather than google-cloud-sql (correct). Could you please rename the tag to fix the word order?

Why is the tag google-bigquery and not just bigquery? We don't have miscrosost-sql-server, ibm-db2, oracle-mysql, oracle-oracle ... — ypercubeᵀᴹ 1 min ago

Q: My math students consider me a harsh grader. Is my teaching attitude wrong?

initial_DI am a math major grad student at a big public school, and we need to do TA every semester. I got assigned to lower level classes last couple semesters, and it's been quite difficult for me. Even though I am a pretty nice person in general, I have so much trouble tolerating my students' sloppin...

A: My math students consider me a harsh grader. Is my teaching attitude wrong?

Jeff L.Yes, you do seem to have a bad attitude toward it, but I suspect you knew that. I would suggest trying as hard as you can to put yourself in their shoes: Not everyone enjoys the same things you do. What's a subject you had to take in school but didn't enjoy? Can you imagine not putting as mu...

Free diplomas for everybody!
Or some could just suck it up, quit school (like I and at least one other heaper did) and get to work and prove themselves

@TomV I don't even know what "grad student" means.
Is he a student or a teacher?

Neither do I but: :
> I have students coming to me asking how they can get extra points without doing any actual work.

Oh, I guess TA means teaching assistant or something lke that.
I wonder now what "school" means. Is it university or lower level?

Doesn't matter IMO, I disliked school work, it was to repetitive and too slow for me, but you shouldn't go begging the teacher to cheat the system
if you fail the test you failed it, especially in maths there is no discussion

@TomV Well, I disagree.
I had cases where the teacher had not correctly - at least in my opinion - graded my exams
I agree that school - especially high school - is repetitive and boring.

4:48 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ Oh yes that happens I agree

More so for pupils that can read and understand things easily - without much explanations

But I've graded students later on in my life, and I've seen a lot of lazy students begging for a free pass too

yeah, that happens, too.
I guess the frequency depends on the country / culture.
I thought it wasn't such a problem in the US
Perhaps things have changed

Best example I've seen was someone in a Install & config Microsoft course I teached
Lesson 1: RAiD levels
before noon one student came up "Hey, I thought the course was about just clicking next next next, I don't get this so I'll just not follow the rest of the course, can I get the certificate anyway?"
No, you won't get the cert of a 5 day course if you quit after 4 hours

@TomV Haha
But see it from the dumb student point.
he doesn't lose anything by asking - except revealing himself to you

4:53 PM
True

I had a student once (in vocational training) that he supposedly did the last semester's project all by himself.

I thought to myself "there is no test at the end, it's a certificate for attending, just sit here 5 days, don't interrupt and don't slow down the rest of the class" and he would have gotten it

The rest were all in groups of 2-3 students. He was rather mediocre so I was keen to keep up with him in the 7-8 weeks.

Which tells a lot about Microsoft certificates and what they are worth

He as supposedly working at home, giving me excuses when I asked how was progress or if he could show me some of his code.
In the end he came up with a Visual Basic app that played Minesweeper.
It was running but the source code wouldn't compile.
Funny thing, the app had a Help button with a link to an email.

4:57 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ Not his I presume :D

I emailed the guy on the link and the next day, the student was asking the others, "how on earth did he found where I took the program from?"
@TomV no, of course not

You should look up his name on linkedin, I bet he's a manager now

Yeah, he could be.

The Americaland election is most amusing. It's almost as if it's some sort of parody & the real one's not happening yet

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Can you imagine how many questions would be tagged big query? Yeah I've got a big query.

@PaulWhite It's similar to SQL Server question stagged with SQL,isn't it?
Yeah, I work with SQL

Don't get me started on that one again.
SQL as a synonym for query
Also, I care little about the super low volume tags. I respond to meta requests but that doesn't mean I think it's important
We'll have to have that sql-query debate properly at some stage soon on meta

"SQL DBA"

But not today, and not while I'm on my phone

@TomV I bet none of those people ever have imposter syndrome.

I've gotten myself into a bit of a mess in the comment section of this question, not sure what other opiinions are cc @PaulWhite

@TomV Thanks, added a comment.
As I read it, the main point of debate is whether the bounty should be awarded.
Since the answer was posted during the bounty period and accepted, the system will award the full bounty amount anyway.
