@SimonRigharts I'm told they're also pretty good at rugby.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Overrated IMO. We'll probably lose the next World Cup and Steve Hansen will become a national pariah

On related news the Aussies gave the poms a good kicking in the Ashes test.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Sounds like there was a bit of vigorous on-field banter as well

@SimonRigharts didn't see that, just saw the terrible score the Poms got in the first innings.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Clarke (Aussie captain) told Jimmy Anderson he was going to "get a f***ing broken arm" or something along those lines

12:09 AM
@SimonRigharts Trust the aussies to keep it classy. No underarm^H^H^Hhanded tricks this time.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells 'Classy' and 'Australian' don't seem to sit well together in the same sentence.

@SimonRigharts Now that's claaaaasy.
(for those old and flatulent enough to remember The Comedy Company)
Alternatively, one is reminded of Top Gear's review of the Chevy Camaro (basically a rehashed HSV commodore with a different body). "They had to go the the Australians for a bit of sophistication".

@MarkStorey-Smith @Phil @billinkc Remember the discussion last night about my large data import getting increasingly slower with each query? I ran the import again with some logging on, take a look at the log - its f*cking weird!! dba.stackexchange.com/questions/53831/…
anyone else with any experience of MySQL doing this, let me know!

@DannyBeckett Could it be as simple as you've clustered on old_id but as there is no order to your inserts you have an exponentially increasing rate of fragmentation?

I guess that could be it
it's an easy one to try anyway

12:22 AM
Could try dumping the data to a heap then building the index post load

yeah I just did that
the log there was that run
finished 20 mins quicker
lol!
wait... let me check I understood you correctly. Not sure what you mean by "dumping the data to a heap", but I removed the KEY line from the CREATE TABLE statement, and then added the index via CREATE INDEX afterwards

I'm not a MySql guy but IIRC InnoDB will create the clustered on the primary key, same as SQL Server does. So to test dumping to a heap, don't define the PK

ah ok!
I can try that too
cheers Mark... will test those ideas out and let you know how I get on!

@DannyBeckett np

12:45 AM
Some good answers from this chap that seem to have gone unnoticed dba.stackexchange.com/users/27496/andreas-wolter

@MarkStorey-Smith it's actually slower without the primary key and index, with an ORDER BY on the INSERT
Batch 14 just finished in 2 mins 30 secs

@DannyBeckett don't use the order by for the heap insert

ok
brb

@dannybeckett and don't LIMIT either, just dump the lot

that's how I'm getting my progress though :(
every batch of 100k sends that info to the log
I'm running it without the ORDER BY now, like it was originally
results look similar so far. up to half a million. the point I notice it at is 1.2 mil

12:52 AM
@DannyBeckett As @ypercube pointed out, the LIMIT on the select could well be the cause of the problem, rather than the insert

yeah
I need to try that too
will try that after this
on batch 12....
yeah this is looking the same
I'll try @ypercube's suggestion.. brb

Got to get some kip, let us know how you get on

ok thanks mate will do!

@MarkStorey-Smith - @ypercube's suggestion worked perfectly! The job went from 3.5 hours to 15 mins!!

heh, " An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated. " Translation, "lots of stuff is broken. I quit." right?

So, as a training exercise for my Junior Dev, I'm thinking about spinning up a SQL server box on Azure and breaking something. Then he has an hour to fix it. Any thoughts on something simple, but engaging?

@Eight-BitGuru But unicorns... — FreshPrinceOfSO 34 secs ago
@EugeneM Is it free? I would probably do AWS

@FreshPrinceOfSO We have partnership credits, so yes

@EugeneM What are you trying to break?
@DannyBeckett Please stop abusing Chrome

@FreshPrinceOfSO I'm considering either making a bad view or misconfiguring something simple. Maybe fill up the disk with a transaction log, or mess up permissions. He's more of a databse dev but I don't mind him learning some basic DBA stuff. The goal is to give him high pressure training without the risk

@DannyBeckett Maybe they are waiting for a good reply to their SQL Server question. It may be some time :D

@EugeneM I don't know how involved you should get with a developer

2:33 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO Well, it's a two person department, and I'm his manger, so it wouldn't hurt to hit some of the basics

@EugeneM Yeah, I would agree with that.

I think I'll aim for a full transaction log, until someone comes up with a more interesting idea
That's actually happened here at work until I had our SLA sorted out

@EugeneM I think that's a pretty common issue

Did some testing late last week on using Hekaton for table-valued parameters. Result: A++++ (so far):

@AaronBertrand Nice. I'll read more details later but I like what I scanned and what I see in the charts at least ;-)
@AaronBertrand Ended up being an absolutely amazing game to be at last night, eh? Felt bad for you guys at the half. Turns out you were a historic one :)

Is there a DBA reaction when I see a varchar(1) NULL in a table ?

@MikeWalsh BAH! And double BAH. The Broncos should have never let them back into that game.

@FreshPrinceOfSO no clue. I don't have them all memorized...
@MikeFal They did though
@MikeFal Well sort of let and were forced to let all at once

@MikeWalsh They need to have an index

3:06 PM
@MikeWalsh I know. And it disgusts me. The whole game turned on Monte Ball coughing up that fumble.

Was priceless seeing Welker involved in a couple of those big oopses also.
@MikeFal Seems only fitting after a first half with points pretty much because of fumbles/drops ;-)

@MikeWalsh Yeah halftime sucked. But I turned to Souza and said "The 3rd quarter is ours. 27 points!" Sure enough, I wasn't far off - 21 points in the quarter, 7 more within 2 minutes of the 4th.

@AaronBertrand Nice call. Sure fun was had by all :)

Tom made bacon marys (bloody marys with bacon vodka). Mark made hot chocolate + goldschlager. I did not really feel cold at all.
Tailgate started at 4. And we missed the kickoff.

The worst part is I have to deal with Robert Davis getting smug about the Seahawks.

3:18 PM
@MikeFal :-) They are a great team

@MikeWalsh They are a good team and it's my contention that they are weak on the road.
Hell, the Rams almost beat them in St. Louis. Probably should have beat them.

@MikeFal ask him when their last super bowl win was.

@AaronBertrand All I know is I'm cheering for Brees tonight.

He can go on and on about how amazing they are but they aren't so great when it counts.

Oh, wait, I'm mixed up
I thought it was NO v Seattle tonight, but I see that I am wrong.

3:36 PM
i'm done with professional sports. they bring out the worst in me and they're not even an accurate representation of me. also ... elway needs to admit his mistake and cut hillman/ball and pay moreno ('cept he's hurt now)

Get-Guns; Fire-Lazer -sfx=pewpew

Apparently (according to Argenis) Microsoft trademarked "Windows PowerShell" but did not bother to trademark "PowerShell" - same kind of silliness that leads to them using "PowerPoint" with no space but "Power Pivot" needs to have a space.

@swasheck I don't think Hillman plays again for the Broncos. Ball....can be saved. He has to learn ball security

@MikeFal ... and Holliday
and Decker looks for flags more than the ball.

3:48 PM
There was a terrible non-call last night, and several less egregious ones
I'm half expecting officiating to get better but I think that's crazy pipe dream land

@AaronBertrand the overall quality of officiating last night was awful for both teams. it's why i've actually decided to disconnect from it because it's no longer about sport, it seems.
actually ... it's been awful all season ... across the board.

@swasheck Seems like every time a non-call is made the announcers say "the officials just don't want to ever make it about them at a crucial point in the game"
except... they do..

It's like how I treat volleyballl, I don't mind if you call it loose, or tight, but don't be in between and FFS be consistent

@AaronBertrand that sounds dirty

@MikeWalsh what, like at the end of the game last week? Oh, it's Brady, so we'll just pick up that flag.

3:51 PM
@AaronBertrand exactly. They said it there too. Plus the key non-call last night.. Well turns out it wasn't key ;-)

@MikeWalsh at the time it certainly felt like it was

@AaronBertrand in fairness ... Brady gets the BOD quite a bit.

indeed.

I am still at a loss for how they could throw a flag last week and then just look around and pick it up, whistling like nothing ever happened

@AaronBertrand That was one of the handful times I stood up and yelled at the TV. :-)

3:53 PM
@swasheck sure, most good quarterbacks do though, this isn't just about Brady

Although, in fairness, I do apologize to Bill for yelling about going for the wind instead of the ball.

@AaronBertrand i thought you were making it about with him "Oh, it's Brady, so we'll just pick up that flag."

@swasheck "Oh, it's <insert star quarterback here>, ..."
It's been awful like that in a LOT of games for a LOT of teams. Last week's was just the most recent example.

overall the broncos didnt come out to play in the second half, got knocked around in the first few series of the 3rd quarter and couldnt recover. there were awful calls and nocalls against both teams at fairly crucial points in the game and a mistake by the broncos won it for the pats. sucks that it had to come down to that --- but that's coaching and del rio just lost his USC job.

Anyway, I'm not going to argue about this. Officiating in the NFL has sucked this year. Full stop.

3:55 PM
@AaronBertrand +1

@swasheck I +1 and that +1

anyone have a naming convention when using covering columns in the index?
For example,

No, who cares? It's not like you're going to have another index with the same keys but different (or no) INCLUDE columns, and if you are, then fix that before you start getting anal about naming conventions.

Q: Date Format in Sql to SSRS mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss.nnn AM/PM

MikeI need to get the exact date time to SSRS, I noticed when I use a date field the milliseconds get cut off in SSRS so I was thinking about formatting a string. I could not find a convert option that match the output I needed mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss.nnn AM/PM So I came up with this long formula -- ...

@AaronBertrand that is really ugly

@AaronBertrand The obvious question is why the hell are they formatting date/time in SQL.

I tried to address that in my answer. Likely they are writing a view and don't want to to bother a bunch of different reports with pesky formatting code. I get why you might want to centralize that sometimes (though in most cases I completely agree with you - stop formatting in SQL).

@Aaron if it is some heavy processing is it not better to do it on sql server rather than doing it on SSRS ? — Muhammed Ali 4 mins ago

@AaronBertrand I know nothing about this. But my first reaction is that the cost would be the same

@FreshPrinceOfSO well actually it's a little better to do it in SSRS, since SQL Server is quicker at just doling out the native data. SSRS (and other client applications that are presenting the data) have to go row-by-row anyway. Not making SQL Server perform conversions at every row will be much better for you in the long run.

@AaronBertrand thanks for the lesson

@FreshPrinceOfSO heavy data processing is better to do it in SQL Server (aggregates and such). Formatting, then SSRS

@AaronBertrand It's funny because they (rightfully) tend to avoid marking Data Explorer bugs as status-completed until my patches have been pulled and actually deployed to the public instance.

I am quite happy to see other points of view, and I do so all the time. Still I expect an answer to actually ANSWER THE QUESTION and yours DOES NO SUCH THING. If it is, I'm done

@AaronBertrand at least I will still be alive though
