hello
anyone willing to help me with designing some magic age of sail naval terminology (ship rating - depending on number of bronze cannons)

9:24 AM
does it sound weird to have my book refer to ships with 56+ rated cannons as "battleship"
that is, having it be classification

10:11 AM
so I made this rating system:
Rated cannons: Heaven- and Earth- cannon - do count towards ship rating
Quasi rated: Half-cannon - does count as rated cannon, but only up to 1:1 quasi-rated:rated ratio
Unrated cannons: Black- and Yellow- cannon - do not count towards ship rating - too small size, mostly for anti-crew use

Sloop of War: 8-12 rated cannons
Corvette: 14-24 rated cannons
Light Frigate: 26-38 rated cannons
Heavy Frigate: 40-54 rated cannons
Battleship: 56+ rated cannons

Does it make sense?

@FailusMaximus Sounds reasonable... Is the question about what to name the ship types?

kinda
my problem honestly is, I want to replace corvette with something else

Well, it's on an alien world, right?

also, all these ships are actually catamarans, which I hope changes situation
yeah, I could easily use unique local terminology
but for most people, these ship names are alien enough

Name it after an alien bird of prey, predator fish, or other aggressive animal

french Corvette kinda sticks out like a thumb between the rest
and I am sure as hell not using British terminology for that
I'm not calling those ships fu**ing post ships

1:49 PM
Is that full British name?

Post Ship, 20-28 cannons, I think
6th rate ship of the line

Very profane people, those British. Though I would have guessed "Bloody Post Ships"

Post doesn't mean postal service
it means that it's the weakest ship with post of a captain
any warship* with less than 20 cannons is comanded by lieutenant

I was mostly making a joke on the fu**ing part...

Post ship was a designation used in the Royal Navy during the second half of the 18th century and the Napoleonic Wars to describe a ship of the sixth rate (see rating system of the Royal Navy) that was smaller than a frigate (in practice, carrying fewer than 28 guns), but by virtue of being a rated ship (with at least 20 guns), had to have as its captain a post captain rather than a lieutenant or commander. Thus ships with 20 to 26 guns were post ships, though this situation changed after 1817.Sea officers often referred to the post ships as frigates though technically the Admiralty scrupulously...

1:51 PM
Any way

oh I see

Not a great joke

no, it's good
I'm just kinda slow
at least at this moment
I didn't sleep well

I understand
In my opinion, which is uninformed, if you are going to use earth navel terminology, then you can use the ones people know about, because the number of people that know that corvette is french in origin and the others aren't is quite small, and the number of people who know how big a ship is or how many cannon it has on based the name is even smaller.

I mean, that -ette sticks out there

1:57 PM
To you
I never thought about it till you mentioned it

ok, I guess I'll keep it that way then

I mean, it makes sense now that you said it, but I just didn't think about it before that
You might as well go something like Tuna class, Barracuda Class, Sword Fish class, Shark Class, Orca Class, except use alien fish
And the flying boats are all named after birds

2:22 PM
thank you

2:33 PM
And of course usual disclaimer that these are all just suggestions and you have to write the story that works for you... :)
Also, what's the french name for a battleship class warship?
So far as I can tell it was just something like "vaisseaux de 80" for a 80 gun ship

2:55 PM
@Mephistopheles Hey, question: did Hungary go full communist, or am I misremembering? I know a lot of the eastern European countries around you did.

3:22 PM
they didn't as much "go" as they "went"
it's not like they had a choice
and answer is yes, they did
they were a part of Warshaw pact
@AndyD273

Ok. Curious, based on your experiences and such, what you think about the Bernie supporters and others wanting to try it again?

Honestly, Bernie himself isn't commie, he's social democrat... problem is, American lived experience doesn't differentiate this, and lot of further voters at least flirt with communism
however, as for real communist among them, luckily, they should still be minority, even among Bernie voters

@Mephistopheles I'm not accusing Bernie of anything, though he has praised Russia for their bread lines and said that gulags weren't that bad really. More concerned about the staffer that works for him that said that conservatives should be put into gulags for reeducation... I was watching a video from a guy in Romania talking about it, and the road of bones, and wondering "Wait, does he actually think that he'd be safe from being sent to the gulag, as rich and privileged as he is?"
