@AndyD273 You might enjoy this fantasy/sci fi podcast an acquaintance of mine does: innerearitch.podbean.com

@Hosch250 I'll check it out

4:04 PM
hello

4:30 PM
@Gwideon hi!

how is everyone

@Gwideon Fine, I guess. Halloween isn't coming around for another year, which is a bummer.
What brings you to the Factory Floor?

true. I have a con lang that I would like to be looked over. it's been a while since I've worked on it and I'm not sure what I need to improve about it

@Gwideon what's the purpose/use of this conlang?

it's a language that i made up to add a bit of flavor to my dnd world. It's supposed to be spoken by dragonborns so um yeah. I'd also like to use it in my writings.
drive.google.com/drive/folders/… um here's the folder with all of the stuff in it. Um I suggest reading through the master doc first.

4:43 PM
@Green What'd you do for a costume this year?

sorry if it's not very good

@James ^^

Nice...though I can't tell whats on top of the staff.

@Gwideon Do you have any specific concerns? I don't have the time to dig through that whole Drive folder but I'm happy to give my opinion on specific questions/concerns you have.

um mostly my sentence structure and if it's any good. um also um if my lexicon makes sense with the sounds I have chosen

4:51 PM
@Gwideon I have this answer to how to develop the sounds for a language. worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/40345/10364
Part of the problem is that "good" is a subjective call dependent on the observer. There's a lot of stuff to take into account. How alien do you want the language to be? Do you care about people being able to decipher it?
At the most basic, if it fits your needs then it's "good".

okay

Do you care if english speakers can pronounce it "properly"? I ask because it's extremely easy to pick a set of sounds from the IPA consonant chart that English speakers cannot pronounce.

i'd like to be able to pronounce it so I can use it while gming. I speak primarily english so um yeah

@Gwideon Have you ever seen the IPA chart? ipachart.com
It's fascinating!

yes I have
I used one to choose my sounds

4:59 PM
@Gwideon Oh nice!
I find I enjoy designing the processes to design something instead of the designing itself.

yeah I can understand that

5:15 PM
@Green This outfit feels very conan-esqe

@James most of the fun is that the costume is similar to a lot of things but not directly from any one place. I got inspiration from Time Bandits. Other people mentioned anime. You pointed to Conan.

@Green I have a generic wizard costume with a brown robe and a staff I made from a branch that fell out of the tree in my backyard. I get everything but a lot of LotR in particular.
I drilled a hole down into the top of the staff and a glow stick fits in there perfectly. Though I need to find a stronger light sources that is < 4" long and less than 3/8" in diameter...its just not bright enough. I have a piece of glass that goes on the top to make it look awesome...

@James Reasonably powerful bike light? It's what I used to light my pumpkin.

...a pen light of some sort may work.

@James I wrapped IKEA fairy lights inside the eagle skull to make a lantern. To break up the highly directional LEDs, I draped translucent cloth over them.
For next year, I want to see if I can pull off an animatronic medusa headpiece.

5:27 PM
@James green laser pointer?

@Green oooh...that could work.
@Green That'd be awesome and creepy.

@James The funny thing is that I think I need to plan out a dreadlocks based hairstyle first.
With that much "hair" to work with, how it's shaped is going to have some kind emotional feel to it. Being a white male with thin hair, I have no starting experience in that realm.

6:12 PM
@James Hmm, shouldn't be hard to put together a really bright LED, resistor, and battery...

7:10 PM
@AndyD273 Gotta admit my knowledge of electrical is super minimal.

@Malavika Just general chat. Plus we quite often discuss worldbuilding stuff.

7:31 PM
Worldbuilding is like designing a settimg for a story so it can be anything from laws of physics to how a culture works.

7:58 PM
@Malavika Worldbuilding is the practice of designing a world system. Characters are then embedded in that system to tell a story.

8:37 PM
@Malavika Are you working on a world at the moment?
@Malavika If worldbuilding is the process of building a world system, I'm curious if you have a world that you're constructing right now.
@Malavika Do you prefer SciFi or fantasy worlds?

9:01 PM
Alright, let me give you an example of worldbuilding
I'm writing a novel about a guy who accidentally wanders in his truck into magic universe, because a magic army opened a portal to invade the Earth, but because magic and metals do not like each other, him accidentally entering that portal shuts it down and he gets kicked somewhere else within that world
now, the worldbuilding part
what is the background of this invading empire
why do they need to invade nearly magicless universe such as ours
what other powers are on that planet
how does magic work
how do gods work
things like these = worldbuilding
you create relationships between magic countries
you ask these questions, seek the answers, and only when your world holds together well enough can you actually focus on writing
because if you don't do that, it'll eventually come to bite you in the ass
an example
Star Gate SG 1
in first season Goaulds have space ships that travel 10 times speed of light only
only at the end of season 1 / start season 2, Apophis apparently cracked super fast FTL that's like 10-100 000 times speed of light
yet later within the SG 1, we learn that Asgards were forced to sign treaty with Goaulds because they had to focus on fighting replicators
before season 2, one Asgard ship could wipe out entirety of Goaulds, because their ships are flying so slow it's not even funny
if you don't properly worldbuild before writing, your story will have inconsistencies like this
I mean, I still love stargate

9:16 PM
I just needed that starred out of context.

9:27 PM
see ya

Q: Anatomically Correct Ettin (Two-Headed Giants)

Richard LindahlI'm fairly certain such a creature is impossible, but I was curious to see if anyone could come up with an explanation for such a creature. How would a two-headed giant evolve/function if it was a real creature?

2 hours later…
11:34 PM
hey there @Green
