6:50 AM
In response to the recent CoC changes. I formally announce that I self-identify as a straight male. Feel free to refer to me as he, him, mister, bloke, chap, guy, dude, cobber, mate, friend or man.

10 hours later…
5:04 PM
@Kilisi Good to know, dude. :D I decline to self-identify at this time, but my stated pronouns are any (but please don't be deliberately confusing).
So, I have two completely, absolutely, utterly unrelated questions.
First, what's the very very simplest radio receiver that can be created?
Could I, say, take a very long wire, and cut a gap in it in the middle, and watch for a spark to appear when there's lightning?
Second, what are y'all's thoughts on Elizabeth Warren?

5:28 PM
@TannerSwett what's the goal of this radio receiver?

@Green There's no particular purpose or goal for it besides merely reacting to radio signals in a way that a human can perceive.

4 hours later…
9:07 PM
@TannerSwett To me, she comes of as kinda phoney. Trump lies a lot, but at least he's never claimed to be native american while being one of the most clearly white people in the world.
And all of her policies are basically "What Bernie said, but I'm gonna lie and say it won't increase your taxes."
She frequently lies about some of the most pointless things. Her personality seems to be basically Trump, but less funny and more annoying.

9:24 PM
@Gryphon What's something she lied about recently?
I don't like liars as a general rule of thumb. :D

1 hour later…
10:30 PM
She recently stated that she was fired from her teaching job because she was pregnant, which contradicts both the account of the school board and her own account from the 1970s. That's the most recent thing I heard about.
https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2019/oct/09/did-elizabeth-warren-lose-teaching-job-because-she/

I guess it seems like she's saying, "No, I lied about it then. I'm telling the truth now."

@TannerSwett She's also contradicting the original minutes of the school board meeting from way back when. Which offered her the job for another year, and expressed regret when she declined.
Either way, she lied at some point, which is not a good look.

Right.

She also claimed to be Native American for decades, which is a pretty bad look. That's almost hope she wins the primary so we get a general election in which Trump gets to call her Pocahontas all the time.

Maybe I should join the race as a surprise last-minute candidate.
People deserve a candidate like me who won't lie. I just need to falsify my date of birth and—oh, crap.

10:39 PM
@TannerSwett Hillary is considering doing that so she can, in her words "beat [Trump] again".
Which is a thing she actually said.
@TannerSwett Yeah, I just need to falsify my place of birth and forge my citizenship.

If she does beat him again, I hope she does a bit better job of it this time around...

@TannerSwett I mean, I hope she doesn't, because she's possibly the worst imaginable president of all time. I'd also like to clarify that I have no information on her that isn't public, and if I ever did I would never release it, and I don't want to be run over by a bus.

Well, I'm not a fan of this Trump guy.

I don't like a bunch of stuff he says. I love most of the stuff he does.

Yeah, I do hear that kind of thing a lot.
"I hate him, but I think he's actually doing a good job as president."
That's what my mom's mom says.

10:46 PM
If it's a choice between him and almost every major democratic candidate, I'd pick him. Because he'll say stupid things, but he won't destroy the country that has the largest influence on my country.

We probably have the largest influence on several countries, I suppose. :D Where are you from? Canada?

Yup, and really hoping we have a prime minister who isn't a moron in a couple of weeks.
I also kinda like have a country directly south of me that isn't a complete wreck. And if that means I have to listen to people complain about stupid tweets every other day, I can live with that.

I guess I'd say that mostly, my values align very closely with the Democratic Party values.
When it comes to beliefs about how to actually get useful stuff done... I'm a little less sure about that one.

@TannerSwett What exactly do you mean by values?

Things like: Is everyone's well-being important? How about a criminal's well-being, is that important? Is God important?
Is it better to help a poor person than a rich person? What does the answer depend on, and why?
I guess another thing that influences my political feelings is the fact that I'm queer, so I'm going to gravitate towards a party that seems pro-queer rather than anti-queer.

11:00 PM
@TannerSwett I feel like except for "is God important", the other three questions are pretty much universally answered yes.
No matter what your political affiliation.

How about this one:
Is a virtuous person's well-being more important than a horrible criminal's well-being?

@TannerSwett Hmm. I would argue yes but not infinitely, only to an extent. I could see an argument for no, but that would require releasing literally everyone from prison, which is a very extreme position, so I don't think it's popular.

Well, here's my answer:

I think most people would say "yes, but only to an extent".

No, they're equally important—but often, we have to sacrifice a criminal's well-being in order to protect other people's well-being.
Anyway, I'm gonna run off and eat dinner.
Talk to you later!

11:14 PM
@TannerSwett Yup, 'twas an interesting chat.
