I want it to be true soo badly, but the ending seems too far out there

Hi,

The question “What would be the possible issues with an IQ based voting system” (https://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/83199/what-would-be-the-possible-issues-with-an-iq-based-voting-system/83205) is protected but I’d like to post my answer to @JamesD.

IQ follows a gaussian distribution, such that:
https://wikimedia.org/api/rest_v1/media/math/render/svg/ffe7c5cbdecda556bf2170e31f1f9a127b74e239

With μ being the mean, σ the standard division and x the IQ.
In your case x is defined in the range [50:150], and we will take μ as 100 (average for the American population) and S

5:59 AM
*standard deviation (typo)

6:11 AM
@JDoe alternatively, you could just have a higher rep user post the answer

If you are willing to do so please! @TrEs-2b

thanks a lot ! @TrEs-2b

You're welcome

6:28 AM
If you plot this function it should look like this: imgur.com/a/tAbiG @TrEs-2b

thanks again

no worries
Want to see Richard Spencer and Bob Marley performing a duet?

Go to www.EveryLittleThingIsGonnaBeAltRight.com

the typo was "deviation" not "derivation"

6:34 AM
why alt right?

Needed a pun based on all right, alt right came to mind
I like le funny puns

yea I like puns but I tend to be cautious when alt right pops right next to a topic related to IQ

I honestly have reached the point where both sides make me afraid and both sides make me laugh. (Also, didn't even mean for that part)

@Mithrandir24601 they're really good

Howdy
I got one you'll like @JourneymanGeek

6:44 AM
tho tbh, the best parts to me (world building wise) are actually the parts outside combat
@TrEs-2b I'm doubtful, but you're going to try me in at least one sense of the word ;)

Are you a knight in Skyrim?

Go to www.DidYouHurtYourKneeMan.com
Get it?
It's a Skyrim meme and your name wrapped in a pun

7:29 AM
@RedactedRedacted I can understand what's being asked now. The link to Spheromak belongs as part of the post, not just in a comment. I added the reality-check tag because I think ykur answers will be “it won’t work”.

7:40 AM
@TrEs-2b Yeah, I was tried. And you tried ;p

In hindsight, I would have asked my first question in the sandbox before asking it for real, because while I got a lot of answers, they were a bit disappointing. I've used other Stack Exchange sites, but none of them have a sandbox. There should be some sort of mention, for first-time users, be...

Hey @Mithrandir24601

2:09 PM
If something is it an answer we should flag it right? There isn't some kind of not an answer vote?

you could also downvote and comment
(by 'is it' did you mean 'isn't'?)

@TrEs-2b you there?
@TrEs-2b I think you especially would like the novel Fragment. But everyone building creature designs should read it.
Fragment (Random House, 2009), is a science-based thriller by bestselling author and screenwriter, Warren Fahy. The novel focuses on a crew of young scientists from a reality TV show who must try to survive when their research vessel, the Trident, lands on Henders Island, where predatory creatures have been living and evolving for over half a billion years. Producer Lloyd Levin optioned Fahy's screenplay adaptation of Fragment for a major motion picture. Pandemonium, Fahy's sequel to Fragment, was published in March 2013. == Plot Summary == In 1791, Captain Ambrose Henders and his crew stop at...
@Bellerophon there is a flag for “not an answer”

2:34 PM
@JDługosz Why exactly?

@JDługosz Sounds very slightly like the book Ancestor by Scott Sigler, which is also worth checking out
Ancestor is a science fiction thriller novel by New York Times bestselling author Scott Sigler. The novel was released in podcast format in 2006, with it also being released in print via Dragon Moon Press in 2007. Ancestor was later re-released by Crown Publishing in 2010. == Plot == Ancestor follows PJ Colding as he and his crew are tasked with transporting a team of scientists to a remote snow covered landscape to finish their project: to recreate the ancestor of all humanity in order to provide life-saving organs that would be compatible with all people. As a snow storm threatens to trap them...
So an annoying thing about youtube is their recommendation engine... Say I want to watch just one fringe science video while doing research for weird ideas, or one music video for a band I'm not otherwise interested in at all. Suddenly my whole recommended list is alien conspiracies and crap pop music...

3:11 PM
@AndyD273 The only way to get around it is to log out when watching stuff you don't want recommendations about.

@Bellerophon Yes, or incognito mode in a new window. I know there are ways around it, it's just annoying

@AndyD273 my recommended list is full of shiba inus now. It's great.

3:23 PM
either way, it does seem worrying that people are putting so much faith in machine learning now. I wonder how many dangers there are in the near future relating to such technology
like, I wonder if you could use machine learning + advertising to push everyone towards a common culture

@DaaaahWhoosh Wouldn't that require a common language?

would it? I mean, if everyone buys the same stuff, eventually even if they can't speak to one another they should have similar lifestyles

And what scope of common culture are you looking for? Joining the Americans to the Chinese?

I guess it would be hard to cross borders, but in the short-term I'm talking about getting rid of sub-cultures
like, instead of it being hard to find your own niche, it's essentially impossible, as an algorithm actively tries to push you towards what's "normal"

@DaaaahWhoosh I'm not sure that's possible. Think about how hard it would be to homogenize the more liberal cultures in US cities with the more conservative cultures in US rural regions? Machine learning is powerful but not that powerful.

3:30 PM
hmm, I see your point. But, then, rather than one culture, how about two? It seems like the country is more divided than ever now
potentially because search engines only show people what they already agree with

@DaaaahWhoosh I don't see how machine learning is going to alter human confirmation bias.
machine learning is just really sophisticated statistics. If you can't solve the problem with Statistics, machine learning isn't going to help you.
at least directly.

so, what you're saying is that there's no way to use machine learning to create a dystopia

@DaaaahWhoosh I didn't say that :) Machine learning is an extremely powerful tool that can be used by humans to create a dystopian. Police States come quickly to mind.
Using machine learning to identify thought-crime seems like a very quick step to take.
"Oh, you have this search history and this browsing history? We see that you have a 50% chance of committing an act of terrorism. Please kiss your life good-bye as you face indefinite detainment."

hmm yeah that does sound both plausible and terrifying.
(that's the spirit!)

3:48 PM
@sphennings I love the kind of story that makes you feel scared because you've read it

4:01 PM
though I'll admit the line breaks are really distracting

@RedactedRedacted it has very creative creatures in it, that happen to cover a lot of things we’ve discussed on WB: different blood, shell evolves into skelleton (just came up recently), second brain, flex-fuel lichens, and I keep finding more.

@JDługosz I'm not talking about that book...

@RedactedRedacted oh, why won’t the gun work? Because the plasma will be eroded by the atmospheric drag long before it reaches fusion speeds. The containment thing might not work at all in an atmosphere.

@AndyD273 yea, and no matter how many times I click “not interested…because I've already seen it” it never catches on.
@Green imagine what kind of pseudo-nonesence you could wipe out that way!
@Green hey, it works for food!

4:33 PM
@sphennings what's with the formatting? Is that a re-copied version that pasted in some line breaks, or something?

whatever it is, it doesn't even look like there's an easy way to fix it

@Green that reminds me of some show or book where these people can see the future and can arrest people for things that they're going to do. I forget what it's called

@JDługosz One can only dream!
@PedroEtCetera That sounds like Minority Report.
A movie I've never seen but have heard a lot about.
@PedroEtCetera, and I'm still working on that fictional ocean for you. It's tough.

@JDługosz I don't know for sure. It was a commissioned piece for an online magazine that he convinced them to license under the creative commons.

@Green yes, that's it! I haven't seen it either, I just remember hearing about it for some reason

4:42 PM
That copy is hosted on his personal site.

@Green ah, coolio, i get XD ocean currents are a v complicated thing

It's a formatting thing. The source code is much easier to read than what is rendered on the website.

@PedroEtCetera The complexity of the currents is largely abstracted away (I don't have to know the math involved) so that's not hard. My main trouble is with learning enough Matlab/Octave to be dangerous. Translating the data from common formats (jpgs) to bin64 ints is tricky.

@Green It's based on a Philip K Dick book too... He has so many books that were made into major blockbusters.
@PedroEtCetera It was a pretty decent Tom Cruse summer blockbuster action movie

5:03 PM
@PedroEtCetera I did manage get a visualization of a single grid square for a tutorial simulation so I'm making progress.

@Green N*ce!

@PedroEtCetera I'll share a picture when I get home (or maybe before if I have time.)

@JDługosz So, it might not be that impossible, it depends on the percentage of the ionization of the plasma.

5:57 PM
@AndyD273 short, not book. PKD had lots of ideas that are different from the recycled pap that screenwriters copy off each other. That serves as an infusion, not a complete piece.
@AndyD273 It was OK but disappointing.
"The Minority Report" is a 1956 science fiction short story by American writer Philip K. Dick, first published in Fantastic Universe. In a future society, three mutants foresee all crime before it occurs. Plugged into a great machine, these "precogs" allow the Precrime Division to arrest suspects prior to any infliction of public harm. When the head of Precrime, John A. Anderton, is accused of murdering Leopold Kaplan, a man whom he has never met, Anderton is convinced a great conspiracy is afoot. His new assistant, Ed Witwer, must have corrupted the system in an attempt to oust him from the position...

@JDługosz I did say it was pretty decent for a Tom Cruse movie...
He's no Star Lord.
Even if he is a member of the first church of the space cadets

6:57 PM
@James hehe
Though I am ever so slightly disappointed that it didn't actually have Elsa with a light saber...
And actually, she'd be more fitting with a Marvel theme, vs Star Wars

@Werrf I was going to vote to reopen your radiation question. I don't think it's that bad, and I don't think it's off-topic.

try again

cc @JDługosz ^^
@DaaaahWhoosh Got it the . . . third time.

1 hour later…
8:18 PM
So I have decided that for Frozen 2 I want to see Elsa being courted by Iceman and Pyro. Will she go for the good guy that understands what she's going through, or will opposites attract as the bad boy uses his charm? At least it wouldn't be a typical sequel...

I assume you're talking about the TF2 Pyro
I would love to hear him sing

@DaaaahWhoosh I'm not sure that the world is ready for the insanity of the TF2 Pyro

awwww
or, should I say, mmmmmmpfh

I guess it could be interesting, but outside of the Disney wider universe...

oh yeah, I forgot Disney owns Marvel now

8:25 PM
I wonder if Disney has enough money to buy X-Men back...

well, they own Marvel and Star Wars. It's not like they need to set up a lemonade stand any time soon

9:12 PM
lol the guy who left the team last week left behind a function with 13 arguments that overwrites a function that's used elsewhere
I disagree with his coding style, and the fact that he obviously would've broken things (if the library is called 'sftpUtil', you better expect 'getSFTPFile' to be taken), but now I can't scold him for it

@DaaaahWhoosh that's a long shot though

@DaaaahWhoosh Nah - that's just someone who's gone 'I need a name... Hmm... Let's try oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo‌ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo‌oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Ooh, I like that. Let's stick a 'w' at both ends :)'

@Mithrandir24601 yeah, oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo‌‌ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo‌oo‌oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo was probably taken
fun fact, my name used to be 'Daaaah', but when I signed up for xbox live it was already taken. So I added the Whoosh on a whim, and now it's my favorite part

Yeah, the Whoosh makes it a lot better :P

yeah, it's one of the few decisions I've made in my youth that turned out to be a good idea

9:28 PM
OMFG BGE2

oh, my ferocious goose!
I don't know what BGE2 stands for
oh, yes I do
I've been meaning to play the first one, eventually

PLAY IT
PLAY IT NOW
AND TELL ME WHAT YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT IT
DO
IT
NOW
I'm sorry, I don't care if you do not care. I will just be spamming this chat with my euphoria
I AM SO HYPED

whoo
(but also, don't give in to the hype)

This chat room is getting far too silly.

It's like, going to the doctors, to get your belly-fat removed, and it's actually a BABY! And you've been trying to get a baby for a decade! But you gave up on it a long time ago! AND NOW YOU'RE GETTING A BABY!!!!

9:41 PM
but instead of a baby, it turns out to be a hyperintelligent Welsh corgi
(which is to say, don't give in to the hype. It could be something completely different)
((nudge nudge say no more))

Just fav it

9:57 PM
How can you folks not be hyped

I've been burned by the hype train before

YOU NEED TO LOVE AGAIN

10:35 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Burn the train. Scourge it bare with the fires of hell until all that is left is a twisted carcass slowly decaying as the tormented souls trapped in its rusty iron frame scream out in their eternity of torture and agony.
