Hello everyone, is this question offtopic pls meta.worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/1954/8621 ?

@Fabinout It seems to me to veer a bit towards the opinion-based side, but other than that it's a legit worldbuilding question. Maybe if you specified narrative or techno/magical conditions, you couldm ake it more answerable.

It seems borderline to me. it almost feels like idea generation, but...

I understand how it can be opinion-based. I'm just trying to get general rules about sport-design
@bowlturner What is idea-generation, asking people for ideas?

@Fabinout sport design for fictional settings, I presume?

Yes, but it's regardless of the context (moon-gravity environment, submarine env, or robots-player)

@Fabinout yes sort of. As I said borderline, opinion-based is also borderline. Not enough to close it, but I think it could be improved a little. Trying to figure out how to help make it better.

thanks a lot :)

@Fabinout I'm not sure you can do that. Any requirements you can have on the sport (like "fun to watch") are in themselves context.
So perhaps you should go all the way and specify as much as you are able.

defining a popular sport (such as quidditch) as mandatory fun to watch is not really opinion biaised isn't it? Or do I not follow you?

@Fabinout Nono, rather the opposite. Generally, questions that are vague or under-specified tend to turn out opinion-based, because there is no clear standart to gauge which is best.

oh ok then

You want to have a general answer as possible, but that leads to an opinion-based question; by specifying it, you're making it more concrete and answerable.
Saying that it should be fun to watch is an example of such specification.

Ok, thanks.

@Fabinout Medium or narrative requirements would also be admissible. It's going to be a different task to design a sport that's cool to watch on a TV screen or one that's cool to write about.
Quidditch, for instance, is pretty clearly designed as a literary sport, and one with a narrative requirement of "it should be a collective sport, but the result of the match has to hinge on the actions of the protagonist".

that explains about "idea generation" and a lot of the problems with overly broad questions
essentially the issue with your question is that three people could all make excellent responses on different parts of what you are asking for and there would be no objective way to rate one over the others
the core of the question is excellent
but it needs to be more specific to generate good answers

@ArtOfCode No kidding.

I'm going in. . .

Have fun. I gave up until I understand the magnetic field equations...
