hi
anyone one?

Q: Question that was closed (opinion-based) was re-asked and stayed open

user3007994A couple of days ago, I asked a question that was closed for being too opinion based. I deleted it, then was persuaded to re-ask it. It gets 10 upvotes and is not closed. This shouldn't happen. What can be done?

hello

4 hours later…
8:33 AM
@user3007994 There's usually a number of people in here. If there's something you want to ask about which you feel is appropriate to ask about in chat, just throw it out; it might take five minutes or a few hours, but someone is likely to respond, or act on what you say.

9:25 AM
@user3007994 Yo

2 hours later…
10:57 AM
Anyone here?
well you see my meta post. My question got closed for opinion based. I deleted it. It asked it again and I get like 10 or 11 votes.

Yep. The reason for that is because the users disagree over if the question is a good one or not. Its a problem we currently have.
It only takes five users to close or open a question.

Its pretty weird
How long have you been on this site?
ive been on it for like 8 days

I signed up to the proposal when it was ~100 people out of the 200 needed.
I've been here since private beta (as long as you can be :P )
The public beta is about 42 days old? The private beta was a few weeks.
We as a community still haven't decided where the line on too broad is.
Its supposed to be judged on the following: "Can we use the question to choose a best answer?"
If the question doesn't give you the criteria to choose the best answer, then how can it be answered? This is the definition of opinion based.

Are you a moderator?

If the question gives you criteria, but the scope is so wide that the best answer is be necessity vague, generalise or really long, then it is too broad.
Nope.

11:05 AM
ok do you like this site a lot?

I do.
I'm very active on the meta site.

And do you think it has a good community?

I think the community is full of good people, but I don't think we all agree on where the boundaries are.
@githubphagocyte Hey

@Mourdos Hey :)

That is what meta is supposed to be about. If you have a question about how the site should be run, or what decisions have been taken, you ask in meta. Moderators are around to help keep things running smoothly, but they don't decide policy any more than any other user.

11:07 AM
This community is better than most

I'm glad you think so :-)

@user3007994 This is a great community with lots of activity on meta showing people are interested in the wellbeing of the site

@githubphagocyte I just wish people voting to reopen a closed question would visit meta when there is a discussion about it being closed.

On a site like the gaming one, hardly anyone votes up questions and it is really hard to get rep
It used to be a better site

Otherwise, we end up in a situation where meta policy is shown to be one thing, and the moderators have to lock close and reopen votes to stop questions being opened and closed.
Gaming does seem to be a good SE fit. We at WB are testing boundaries a lot more.

11:10 AM
@Mourdos Yes I've noticed this not being a smooth running as when we started, but that's a natural part of gaining more users. The influx of new contributors means we need to expect meta to not be known to all. I still think things are working very well.

@overactor you are sooooo close to getting that first gold award for popular questions!

They are. But we did post a comment about it being discussed in meta. So far, the consensus has been to close it.
@Liath that he is.

He missed it by about 200 views on one of the others!

Sadness.

@Mourdos I think people are limited to one close vote or reopen vote per question, so it can't cycle open and closed forever. It can cycle longer now that our community is bigger though...

11:11 AM
Every single question is looked at and answered none are looked over on this site

Yep. We like answering questions.

There is not a single tumbleweed badge on WB

@Liath RE: Hacking the Universe. I think we have a problem with that question and I think its going to drag out and be messy.

@Mourdos The problem with long comment threads on a question is many people only look at the immediately visible ones, so unless the meta link comment gets enough upvotes people won't see it.

Its the most upvoted comment @githubphagocyte
Also, I just looked up what your name means. Amusing.

11:14 AM
@Mourdos I've seen it be a problem on other questions - I'm glad this one has enough upvotes now - it was a while ago that I last looked at it.

I have a feeling that question is going to need closing by moderator.

@Mourdos I wanted a name without numbers on the end, so tried lots of words until I found one that wasn't taken. That was on github. Then I joined Stack Exchange to get a code review and found phagocyte was already taken on Stack Exchange...
I don't mind close reopen cycles when there is significant editing to improve, but there seem to be a few questions just cycling without improvement.

I just have an image of "The Knight of GitHub. Defending it from bad commits, spammers and griefing!"

@Mourdos yes I realised after choosing it that it could sound like that - which is really not what I wanted as I have very little activity on github. If I chose a username again I wouldn't put github in the name as it makes it sound like I do a lot there...

I have a real bugbear with that Hacking question. I need to stop obsessing over it.

11:19 AM
@Mourdos Does it have a meta post yet?

It does.
Concensus is 4 to close as too borad vs -2 that its fine

Have you posted an answer?

Yes

That sounds pretty conclusive...

But 4 votes is too small a user sample. We need more people to vote on it I feel.

11:21 AM
Yes more votes will help. Is the meta link comment sufficiently upvoted on that question yet?

What do you think? I think it is

@Mourdos Yes that's permanently visible - that's fine. Added an extra vote to make sure :)

Vote on the meta :P
Yo @lisardggY

Hola.

@Mourdos I fully intend to :) Just reading through the question first. I suspect that the reopen votes are partly due to the strong desire to write an answer (it has attracted so many!) which can distract people from actually wondering whether it's a good fit for the site

11:28 AM
I thought I would poke you to come over, seeing as you are signed up for WB anyway :-)
@githubphagocyte I wrote about the strong desire to answer in my meta on it.

@Mourdos I've seen enough of the question and answers now - reading the meta posts as we speak...

@Mourdos Yeah, I supported the site, but find I don't have the time right now for the deep digging that participating demands. :)

On other notes. I want to ask more questions. There is a wonderful question about building in the side of cliffs. I need to design a trading post settlement for a PF game.

@Mourdos I must admit I had to fight the strong desire to write an answer from a different angle in order to force myself to look at meta

Join the dark side, give in to your emotion!
@lisardggY I suspect that is why I don't write answers or questions often.
I just don't feel like I have the competency to participate with some of the very well informed people we have around.

11:33 AM
@Mourdos I suspect you're right... I've made my point but I think I'm in the minority... I'm not going to loose sleep over it. I'm fairly sure you keep rep from closed questions so there's no real loss

I dont write any answers. I cant really answer much things. All have are questions
Well im gonna go to sleep

@user3007994 so far I'm hovering about 50:50, people tend to fall into one camp or another
Night

@user3007994 What do you mean by dust?
What kind of size are you looking for your animal to be?
Also, can you edit your question so that you don't keep repeating yourself?
You ask if it is possible 3 times :-)
Also, you firstly say "something like dust" then you say "something very abundant that we do not need or is plentiful"

12:03 PM
@Mourdos I VTC'd it as a moderator, but only closing it as a moderator doesn't have any special powers. There are things that can be done about that, but the main reason why I put it on hold was so that we could decide what to do with it.

TimB mentioned that you can lock a post so that it can't be voted on?

Q: Question that can be easily answered with a quick search online

githubphagocyteThis question has a very clear answer that is easily found with a simple search online. Does that make it off topic?

@Mourdos Yes, and if the community can't decide it may come to that. But I'd really rather not take such drastic action unless it becomes unavoidable.
@Mourdos I agree (and that one is much more thorough as well).

I'm going to accept my answer, by the way.
Regarding downvoting.
Unless anyone here objects

12:09 PM
@Mourdos Thanks for spotting this.

I wrote it. Easy to spot :-)

Hey, I might even get a reversal badge if I get upvotes on a downvoted question.

@Mourdos I've added an upvote and downvote which polarises it even more now - with not even a single disagreeing vote in either direction I think accepting your answer is definitely justified.

I can't accept for another hour. Sadness
@githubphagocyte cheers though

@Mourdos Ah - just realised I was talking about a different meta post - but I've now voted on this one too... :)

@Mourdos Because it's a self-answer. There is a delay there to allow for others to post answers as well, which is particularly important if you post the question and the self-answer at the same time.

12:14 PM
I understand. It makes sense.

If the answer had been posted by someone other than yourself, you could have accepted it immediately had you wanted to.
(Though I personally always recommend waiting 1-2 days before accepting an answer, even if you are pretty sure which answer you'll end up accepting within minutes of posting the question.)

I've advocated two days before. I stick by that.
Though in this case its meta rather than regular, and its very cut and dried.
@user3007994 You there?

@Mourdos Yes, it depends on the traffic on both the site and the specific question. 1-2 days is a decent rule of thumb. On Amateur Radio, I would tend to encourage waiting longer, because it's a lower-traffic site. On Stack Overflow, it might be 15 minutes is plenty enough.

12:29 PM
@Mourdos If they show a reasonably clear consensus, then yes, I'd argue that it's appropriate.
However, if the meta question asks a question and the "yes" has net +8 and the "no" has net +9, then not, because that's not a clear consensus.
So like with so many other things it's a judgment call :)

Hence why I linked specific posts.
I'm not sure they have attracted enough attention to be classed as such, though they show clear consensus.

I think the "lack of basic research" meta question is a good example of a post that doesn't show a clear community consensus, though; +5 for downvote easily googlable questions, +3 for it's fine to post such questions. The "hacking the universe" meta question is more clear: +6 for yes it's too broad, -3 for it's fine.

Back later. Off to lunch :P

You can always link to them for consideration without implying that they state a community policy.

1:08 PM
Return!

1:43 PM
Is the following too broad?
The question about a diet of dust brought up a few creatures that survive on dust, however they were all insect sized or smaller. This got me thinking about the [Blue Whale](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale#Feeding) which survive on a diet of [Krill](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krill).

Let us imagine a creature:

- Between the size of a Cat and the size of a Great Dane.
- It has nothing to do with the sea, nor does it burrow; it can fly if your answer requires such.
- It is more active than a sloth.

2:07 PM
I don't think it's too broad... although I don't think it could exist.
Answering now

I've reworded the question a bit since the above :P
Note: Does not need to be earth like enviroment

I admit I read your question here then answered and went back to the question you posted. I can't see the air producing enough nutrients for such a dynamic creature... I've suggested an alternative which I think would be kinda fun
If you can upvote it 8.5 times that would be ace! :p

Hehe
How is the software building going, btw?
I decided I needed to ask some more questions. So I did.

2:27 PM
I did a little bit of prototyping but then someone made an offer to buy my flat and the world got a little manic

^_^

I'm ahead at the moment - one more answer than question :)

I'm definitely a meta user more than a regular user.
I'm 6 questions and 6 answers.

2:45 PM
I'm 8 questions 112 answers :D
closes it quickly Must get first gold badge
:D
nearly 10k views and I've only had 40 upvotes :(
gold upvotes badge is what 100 upvotes?

How could so many people miss your brillance? :(

I know, right :o

3:11 PM
10,005 - congratz on your gold badge @overactor

No...

I'll just have to be content with my 21 silver badges :p

and your top rep score

meh, rep is easy
gold badges are hard

and your little diamond which guarantees a gold badge later :-)

3:16 PM
on stack overflow I only have 5 gold badges
with over 21k rep
at least one of those just being for visiting the site X days in a row

That is hard to get
One day of vacation and it is all over

nah, it's easy

How many days does it need to be?

mobile phone internet :)
100 days
on stack overflow I got unsung hero and 100 days in a row
can't remember which was first

Yeah
Nice

3:18 PM
but those were my first 2

I got unsung hero as well

unsung hero not likely on this site, we vote too much

Hmm. I need to find some more interesting questions.

They are so bad at accepting and voting up posts there because there is so much garbage

indeed
I got a gold badge for java
I'm nearly 1/3rd of the way to a science-based gold tag badge

3:19 PM
Nice

actually not quite
40 answers, total score 292
need 200 answers, total score 1000
7.3 upvotes per answer in that tag average, not too shabby

That is god

lol, my next highest is the apocalypse tag....where I get 109 upvotes off 11 answers
so science-based apocalypses seem to be my forte

3:36 PM
Doom is near!
And this is exactly how it will happen

3:49 PM
TimB is an expert in the various ways the Apocalypse will happen.

1 hour later…
4:55 PM
@TimB Thanks, your first will follow soon enough, I'm sure.

@overactor Probably the 100 days one in a month or two

For what it's worth, I think you deserve the gold badge more than anyone
Famous question is disproportionately easy
compared to 100 up votes on an answer
I can only hope that some of the people brought over here by my question decided to stay when they saw your answer. @TimB

3 hours later…
7:41 PM
meh, if it was that easy my questions would be famous :)
you deserve it
Even if I really think more than 0.4% of people viewing should have upvoted! :p

Q: What event(s) can cause global government collapse within a month or less?

KaguraRapAside from zombies, loosely based on real life, is there an event or collection of events whether man-made, natural, or a mix that can plunge the world into chaos where any government control is either non-existent or left to civilians to survive? Can be fictitious, just not totally unrealistic ...

seems too broad to me
I'll let you guys look at it though
