@NexTerren Branch out. Experiment. It'll be good for you.

@James I did actually experiment with 5e when it was brand new.

@NexTerren Oh good you're here.

5 party, level 1. I found the weakest (at the time) enemy, I think it was a normal wolf, and spawned 5 of them.
I slaughtered them.
I felt bad.
We spent an hour trying to figure out if we understood the rules incorrectly.

Yeah the wolves getting advantage from pack tactics is huge at early levels.

And then we changed systems.

4:32 PM
@NexTerren A good DM never feels pity. Only righteous victory.
Though I almost killed the warlock in my party with a Yeti last night...
I was making up an arena battle for him on the fly and I didn't realize just how potent an abominable yeti was.
They have a DC18 chilling gaze that can paralyze characters for 1 minute, which is ten rounds of combat. A single yeti with bad saves on the party's part could tpk a group by itself.

Youch.

Yeah I modified it on the fly to only stun for one round.

4:51 PM
@James What a cool trait.

So...ideas on how to handle demons possessing a human in DnD?

5:08 PM
With an exorcist.

@James Decapitation. It makes an exit point for the demons to get out.

@AndyD273 Would vomiting work?

No no...like how do I handle one as DM, for the players to fight against

Or, for that matter, merely using the loo?

@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 It can, but some might grab ahold of the intestines and do damage. It's not pretty

5:10 PM
@AndyD273 Prettier than losing your head.
@James Never played, so I don't know :(

@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 You say that now, but wait till you're disemboweled from the inside, as your large intestine is choking you...
That little girl in that movie got off easy

5:30 PM
What do you want to do with it? I'm planning on doing a "phantom haunts the target, only visible to them." I want to pair that with reports that there's a magical curse that causes hallucinations, eventually leading to violent insanity (with magical abilities), which the only cure is to kill the infected.

Then I'm going to have the hallucinations become more and more extreme, make the player freaked out, and paranoid that the rest of the party figures out.
But it's actually a demon (or something like one) and not the curse.

@NexTerren So the super NPC they sort of cornered me into creating, I've decided since he was a complete pushover the entire story it only makes sense that he became powerful by making a pact with a demon and is now possessed. But so far as I can tell there are no mechanics in the system for demonic possession.

@James Just take the demons traits and stack them on top of the NPC traits?

@James Do like Vaarsuvias?
Sell their soul for N minutes?

@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 lol, that bit was pretty f-ing funny.
@AndyD273 I do plan for him to look like a normal human at the beginning of battle but as he gets damaged, spikes will pierce his skin as the human is sort of...blasted away. Should be pretty gruesome.
Just not sure how to handle stats and abilities...

I'd use the person stats/abilities first.
When the person dies, I'd just switch over to demon stats.
And make them wonder why he didn't go down.

5:45 PM
@23fc9a62-56de-47fb-97b4-737890 Something like this could work...
But I think as the battle goes on the human form will get...shed...so to speak.

@James HP wise, make all damage hurt the human form first, and once it's hit points are gone then the skin is shed, and the demon form starts taking the damage. Other stats can be stacked at first too; MP = human MP + demon MP, until the human part dies, then it is just demon MP;
For slightly more fun, make the demon Legion, for they are many. The human dies, and that releases the swarm.

6:07 PM
@James Parts of the human skin could fall off at certain percent damages.
Possibly helped by slashing attacks.

1 hour later…
7:09 PM
@AndyD273 MP isn't a thing in D&D but I am liking the idea of stacking abilities/skills. I am thinking he will appear as a normal human warlock with the associated skills and then start using demon abilities as the battle progresses...
Now I just have to choose a type of demon to use...
