@HDE226868 yeah, this is hard to work out and I don't claim to have answers either, which is why I brought it up. @bilbo_pingouin thanks for putting together the meta question.
I am not distressed by this. This sort of thing happens in beta; you sometimes have to try something for a while and then refine it. We might need to refine our scope, or maybe just the way we explain our scope. It's good that this question is being discussed.

3:01 AM
@bilbo_pingouin Scratch that; I can view them now.
@MonicaCellio I agree.

10 hours later…
1:26 PM
I did a bit more work on it, but ended up giving up

2:06 PM
Morning

Morning James

@James hi :)

2:26 PM
We can't seem to get around that question it just keeps popping up...

@James which one?
the too broad part?

@bilbo_pingouin yup.

Always

The thing is, defining any closing criteria are always kind of subjective, because we don't leave in a binary world... There's always a white area, a black area and a grey one. And within that one, one can play around for quite a while.
So the SE concept is that by having more people voting, it becomes more "objective"
the flaw is that people tend to follow what the others do
which brings up the bias the of first close voter
that goes for too broad
for opinion-based
for single character, etc.
and the problem isn't only for us, I have seen similar issues on other sites

@bilbo_pingouin I really find serial voting to be a problem here. I have asked questions, specifically stated in a comment on an answer that it does not meet the question criteria and it just continues to rake in up votes.

3 hours later…
6:06 PM
@James that's certainly true. One can see the most voted questions and answers are not really the best...
and people don't read comments

one of the drawbacks of being a site that is not a "hard" topic, i.e. science math etc.

@James Not sure that the number of views and votes are completely rational there neither... but indeed it does not help

2 hours later…
7:49 PM
@bilbo_pingouin Yeah, I get the sense that there are lots of people use this to relax, rather than worldbuild

@SerbanTanasa well it could be both to some extend.
but people are looking for fun...
candy crush all over again

@bilbo_pingouin lol

@bilbo_pingouin well, one of our top questions is about military towels. Nuff said.

@SerbanTanasa which was luckily was closed at some point.

8:04 PM
I believe I instigated that. But I'm guilty of the silly questions too
I'm actually one of the users with the most questions asked
I think i got 66 questions
~45 over 10 votes
sometimes i miss the mark

I'm not a writer or anyone who uses WB for something else. For me, WB is the end, in an of itself.
Dealing with systems and systems of systems just floats my boat :)

@SerbanTanasa ranked number 3 most asker on WB
ok, I made another one: data.stackexchange.com/worldbuilding/query/368390/… which also calculates the average vote.

8:29 PM
Hmmm, 9 votes for every question I ask. Interesting.

So, @SerbanTanasa, you're #3 in number of asked questions and "not so high" in average vote per question, but you're #1 in total number of votes on question.
So your own feeling is quite correct
@Green I got 5, if that's worth anything...

Q: Dealing with sense of scale in space

Cort AmmonOne issue I've seen come up a few times deals with a sense of scale in space. People's instincts on what can and cannot be done are often off by not just an order of magnitude, but an order of magnitude number of orders of magnitude! The same set of numbers tend to come up for describing just h...

8:52 PM
@bilbo_pingouin ok my user page says I have 30 questions but the query comes up with 34...

@James deleted questions ?
I learned how to create a table less than a week ago, so my SQL skills are far from being good

no idea...could be i guess

it seems to match mine and Serban's values though...

I average 11 per question...not bad

@bilbo_pingouin, I forked that to exclude those with under 10 questions asked, since 1 user with 1 question with 40 votes is not a batting average: data.stackexchange.com/worldbuilding/query/372239/…
can't print tables here, but here it is, ranked by average votes

9:00 PM
@SerbanTanasa Ha! Stable average :)

Unsurpringly, @MonicaCellio has the best average

@SerbanTanasa She's pretty awesome. That doesn't surprise me.

@overactor, @Liath and @celtschk are next, all solid posters, followed by yours truly
fixed the rounding issues, I believe this is the final version: data.stackexchange.com/worldbuilding/query/372243/…

@SerbanTanasa, since you seem to have better skills than I do with that, maybe you can see the discrepancy to @James' count 34 here and 30 on profile

16th place not bad...
Is there a ribbon/trophy for sixteenth place? I assume the ribbon color would be some god-awful shade of chartreuse.

@bilbo_pingouin @James ah, the stackexchange data dump is updated intermittently, might be behind a few days.
Oh, wait, it goes the other way around? Perhaps deleted questions? Dunno
I'd have to nose around in the tables, figure out the names, etc.

@SerbanTanasa blink... what? I'm surprised by that. I guess that's the power of a few high-scoring questions; my last couple have not fared well and I've actually been feeling a tad discouraged by that. So hey, this is nice to see. :-)
@Green aw, thanks! This community is full of awesome people!

Acturally, there data.stackexchange.com/worldbuilding/query/372251/… I only see 30 questions for James (Id: 189)...

@bilbo_pingouin, interesting, might need to do a nested query

@SerbanTanasa @James has two deleted questions and 30 others. The data dump is updated every Monday morning.

anyway, I got to sleep now... bye!

9:18 PM
G'night!

9:32 PM
@bilbo_pingouin, it's easy, there's more than one user who went by 'James'
@James (189) now shows with 30 questions
I guess there was a previous James, who asked 4 questions and left
make that 3 previous James
James IV

@James IV! Nice!
@James, You're a king!

Incidentally, separating out the previous blessed James brought @James IV up one slot
and @MichaelKjörling is now in the top 5, kicking me to the dark outer reaches at #6

9:47 PM
Woo, first silver discussion badge on meta. Also known as: Monica sure does talk a lot. :-)

@MonicaCellio, well, you and Mr. @Overactor also seem to ask the best received questions too, so I'm guessing there's a link there

@SerbanTanasa while surprised, I'm also happy to hear that. From the beginning I've thought that one of my key strengths here would be in asking decent questions (and, I hope, providing good examples). That plus general SE-clue stuff. I'm not nearly the expert that some of y'all are, but I'm ok with that.

Could I get someone to sanity check this question in the sandbox please?

10:08 PM
Never mind, I just posted it anyway. We'll see how it goes.
