a) Handling "What happens if I do this?" ( I have START and CAUSE, give me RESULT )
b) Handling "Where did I come from?" ( I have RESULT and CAUSE, give me START )
c) Handling "How would I cause this?" ( I have START and RESULT, give me CAUSE )
d) Handling "What am I asking?" ( I have PROCESS, give me CAUSE and RESULT )
START is what there was before.
RESULT is what is there afterwards.
CAUSE is the process or change that transitioned between the two. Which can be anything from making an animal bigger, to changing universe and describing what changes.
At the moment, our definition of too broad is a little erratic. trying to see a consensus on each of these types of question. I'm struggling to find examples of type b)

I could probably find examples of all the questions on topics I'm more familiar with like those on stack overflow. But not something like WB. I think, generally, that b and c and way better question than a or d

A is fine if your scope is well defined. B appears to be very rare. We tend to get more "I have a result but don't know Start or Cause", C is generally a good fit and my favorite type. D is Too broad by definition

A generally seems to be the type of question that could be answered by doing some basic research
Even if that research is in scientific publications or patents or obscure articles on wikipedia it's still basic research reachable by google

These questions can very easily be "Too Broad". Remember that Too Broad means *there are either too many possible answers, or good answers would be too long for this format.* They require focusing on a very specific change of a complex system, or require a very simple system to start with because SE is not the place to write a thesis. Ask yourself if the answer can be "anything", or if you could answer this question with just bullet points. If the answer to either is yes. Its probably too broad, with the latter being an "ideas generation" question.
SE only requires 'basic research'. It is supposed to be a site where people give answers.

@Mourdos if we don't have examples of that type of question (and you can't imagine any), then we don't really need to discuss it yet. Just because you see four possible categories doesn't mean we have four extant ones.
Actually, I don't know what you mean by (d), where you mention PROCESS and CAUSE (and RESULT, but not START).
How are you categorizing the "what conditions could cause X?" questions (global government, permanent state of war, and I know there are others).
@Mystra007 so are most programming questions, yet SO is valuable -- because you can find all sorts of stuff on Google, but sifting it requires expertise. And I don't expect people on this site to be fluent in the professional research of all the domains we touch; we're a crossover site. Yes do Google and check Wikipedia, but I think it's ok to bring questions here after that. (If they're well-formed questions, of course.)

I wish that stack exchange did have a "Where do I start" section though. Because some stuff are just not findable on Google no matter how hard you look and sometimes you don't even know what to search for. I think such a section would help to get better questions in the long run and some peoples would much rather answer basic easy questions just as some peoples who rather answer more difficult questions.

@MonicaCellio That is the conclusion I came to.
@MonicaCellio I probably made a mistake there

Q: What can we do to encourage questions?

bowlturnerLooking at our stats the one big thing where we could fail is not getting enough questions to bother keeping the site open. Our questions per day keep falling, and more and more of the questions we do get are being axed for various reasons. Personally I think we need to try and help those quest...

hi

How're things?

not bad

Excellent

1:07 PM
hmm, that question that was just posted is a really interesting one
going to a wedding in 13 minutes
getting some work done before I go

Fun?
Or duty?

paid work

Meant the wedding, actually
Unless you did too... Which would be odd

lol
it's a friend getting married
me and my girlfriend are witnesses

1:31 PM
@TimB That's good, not all weddings are fun

@Mourdos what if i have the result but I want to know what might have caused it?
and the starting point is not really important

then your question is probably too broad

how to terraform a cold planet ?
I have result, it's a temperate and warmer planet
I want the process and I have the initial situation

which is the starting point
starting point is cold planet, ending point is warm planet
you want the process

yes, just the process
it's too broad ?

4:07 PM
nope because in that case you have start and end

I have a city with x and y characteristics, how large can it become ?
so the starting point needs not to be vague
should I split my question for the different climate and eras ?

basically the theory Mourdos is proposing is that you can supply 2 out of the 3 and ask for tyhe other
but if you ever have multiple unknowns
then you're too broad
do you need the answer for multiple climates and eras?

you see, I'm not asking the question for a specific city

two axis of difference is too many, a single might be ok. (I.e. specify the climate and ask for the differences over a tech range ... or specify a tech and ask across climates)

what do you mean by tech range? pre-industrial is too broad ?
I'm trying to find a good categorization for historical periods. The one we learn in school is bad because it's not universal.

4:20 PM
A simple example - do they have the wheel? Domesticated animals? Aquaducts?
agriculture?
currency?

yes they do have all of this, they have the technology to make aquaducts.
but these tech include everything as long as it's past the bronze age and prior to that, cities where almost inexistent

nope
incas didn't have the wheel

I did not know that. But I don't know what other technologies are important enough to be mentioned in the question. I supposed that they should have the wheel.

that's the thing - pre-industrial is a wide range right from stone through bronze and iron age
so just pick an age and if the age is old enough mention if they have domesticated animals/vehicles/etc and you good to go
(there were substantial stone and bronze age settlements ... not cities by modern standards but still substantial)

4:42 PM
I edited the question but I fear it's too narrow. Narrower questions tend to become less useful for others.

nope, looks good
anyone else wanting cities in the desert can look at this one
I deleted the comments

ok
