12:00 AM
You know what I mean. I am too lazy to construct that correctly.

Ah, you mean you hadn't heard the name ASMR until I told you?
I, too, went for many years without knowing it had a name.

I Googled it when you said it, and knew of it immediately. These rooms are great for that.

Yay.

11 hours later…
10:52 AM
@Stephie Wow, that's huge. Very tasty looking

Hey!
I've got new speakers coming.

@Mithrandir24601 It only pretends to be huge - it’s only 18cm diameter.

I'm so excited that I posted flyers around my building claiming responsibility for any loud pre-1950 music and asking that any complaints be slipped under my door. I think we're pretty sound-proof that way.
I will soon find out.
And yes, the cake looks amazing @Stephie!
I never did chop that onion.
I did, however, order pizza.

11:12 AM
Sounds like a good choice.
pizza beats an onion.

There's a meme in there somewhere begging to get out.

@Jolenealaska Oooh, niiice! I'm still using my trusty headphones and earphones
@Stephie But it looks so tall (also as someone living by myself, 18cm isn't that small :P)

@Mithrandir24601 It is (was) tall. So we cut only thin slices and had more than enough for all of us, including grandparents and an uncle. And the ganache was pretty rich, too.

I love my headphones. I have halfway decent wired ones and truly tolerable Bluetooth ones. But I would love to feel my walls vibrate with Beethoven. And I think I can do that without annoying anyone.

I have about half an hour until feeding time again. My nights are being pretty rough lately - ok, only two nights so far, but I am not handling it as well as I used to.

11:22 AM
feeding time?!
WTF have I missed?

Is that a bat?
NICE!

I have a long history with those.
Very, very nice.

@Jolenealaska I have a pair of (very nice) RHAs, which are expensive for earphones, but actually better than my (more expensive) headphones

11:26 AM
Named “Bruce” - yes, that’s a Batman reference.

@Stephie Perfect :D

(could also be “Brucette”, but how am I supposed to check)
He’s incredibly tiny. Look at the knit in the photo: that’s not a sweater, it’s a sock!
I use a small paintbrush to feed him, because he’ll suckle on the bristles. A syringe is more hit-and-miss, only if he’s very hungry he’ll consider licking the milk from it. But the paintbrush is a lot of dipping and sipping to get him full.

12:14 PM
What fun! When I raised a very, very tiny squirrel decades ago I had great success with an 18 gauge IV catheter. I had my pick of stuff 'cause I worked for a vet, but that was what I stuck with. 3ml syringe with "milk", with the catheter on the tip. FWIW.

12:49 PM
@Stephie so adorable! Is this doable, to have the bat raised by humans and later "auswildern"?
and where did you get an orphaned bat baby in the first place?

@rumtscho It should be doable. He’s not too keen on humans anyway, but I am apparently ok - I have milk. You should have seen him crawling backwards and “screaming” when minor 1 just tried to have him climb from my hand to his.

as Jared Diamond points out, there is a big difference between pets, domesticated animals, and tamed wild animals!

Hello (my first time posting in here)! @Stephie that bat is incredibly cute, and shockingly tiny. How old is he (if you know)?

My dad found him, two days ago alone on the lawn. And we couldn’t get him back, because he was probably lost when his mom moved from one hiding spot to another.

I know you have many roles, but "bat mom" may be one of the coolest!
welcome @mfox

1:04 PM
@mfox hi! He (she?) is probably older than a week and younger that four - they have an age bracket where determining age is very difficult. But as he’s no longer naked or sparsely furry yet can’t fly yet, this gives a certain bracket. Teeth are like scratchy points

Thanks @rumtscho! @Stephie wow, so interesting. I've fostered very young kittens and some wildlife, but never a bat. Do they have good odds of survival at this stage?

1:21 PM
@mfox so-so. In the wild a bat pup has a 50% chance.

what's the other 50%, getting lost by the mom? If that, he already got his category assigned :)

Fingers crossed for the little guy then :)

So far, he eats, pees, poops, crawls around and sleeps a lot. Sounds like a normal baby to me.

2:21 PM
@Stephie That gave me much needed warm fuzzies. You know the odds here, sort of. Here's to things being worth trying.
My squirrel was 25 years ago. He lived to run off and hopefully make many squirrel babies. I have thought of him (very much a him) hundreds upon hundreds of times.

Our Harry (“the boy who lived”) didn’t get the chance - we didn’t want him to get aggressive and have lambs with his sisters, so we had him neutered. But there’s a huge difference between a squirrel and a ram.

is incest unusual for sheep?

Funny story: My dad initially declared him a “she”, so he was “Sophie” for a few hours, until the initial chaos of feeding a hungry and very assertive lamb plus treating the sick ewe subsided and I had time to look closely. You can imagine the reaction of the other sheep owners (a bunch of “old boys) :D
@rumtscho a good shepherd will switch rams often.

they looked sheepish?
(sorry, couldnt resist)

More like how come a man of his age had no idea how to tell a boy from a girl. He had claimed that he could tell by looking at the lamb’s _head_.
Duh.

2:45 PM
As a highly trained former veterinary professional, I can address that.
But not tonight.
Or this morning.
Whatever the hell time it is.
Thanks guys, you've helped me today.
With that, I'm going to try to catch some ZZs.

good night @Jolenealaska
@Stephie to be fair, I also can frequently tell a cat's sex by looking at the face and neck. Especially if the cat is adult and not neutered. I don't claim a 100% hit quote, but I am much better than random - they do have different faces.
not even that different from humans - toms tend to have squarer jaws and thicker necks.

2 hours later…
4:22 PM
@rumtscho Sure. But that was a one or two day old lamb.

4:43 PM
yes, I know it's a different situation. In fact, I can't recognize the sex of a human baby (and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone there).
the big question is, why did you turn him into Harry and not into Sophocle :)

2 hours later…
6:39 PM
@rumtscho see above... and would you like to stand on a meadow and yell “Sophocles” loud enough for every random passerby? >.<
We had lots of lambs - and admittedly some names were a bit tongue-in-cheek. Like when hubby suggested minor 2 name the male twin lambs of her Holly (born out of season on Christmas) “Gulasch” and “Schnitzelchen”. She was small enough to like the names and did so before I could intervene. Took her a few weeks or months until it dawned on her.
Then there was Elvis - because his baaa had that special timbre that made the real Elvis so famous. He didn’t wriggle his hips, though.
And the triplets were the last we had to bottle-feed before dad gave up his part of the herd. All of them loved to be picked up by my mom. Arthur often even fell asleep in her arms. I told her that this probably wasn’t the best habit to encourage - all of them still tried to climb into her arms when they were fully grown.

6:55 PM
haha!
For some reason, your crying "Sophocles" in the meadow reminds me of the Tatortreiniger

Baaaaa!!

"I don't have a high school diploma" cries he in the heat of the argument
"well, this isn't something to be proud of, is it now?" says the little old lady who passes by
I usually fulfill the cliche of foreigners don't liking German humor
but the Tatortreiniger is just hilarious.
I saw that there are new episodes on Netflix and put them on the list
but today I watched the first round of a cooking show, with predictable results
now I'm in the kitchen making waffles :)
which will be topped with homemade ice cream (I have the pistachio from Jenny's book and a fresh cherry sorbet)
whipped cream
berries
and a few shaved almonds.

It’s always like that, isn’t it?

I am even holding back here
what the contestant made were "tacos" from tuilles filled with bananas, cream, and some decoration (sprinkle dipped chocolate, that sort of thing)

ROFL!

7:02 PM
and the tuilles were patterned - she piped white dough then covered with dark dough
I sternly told myself that I'm not making tuilles, just waffles.

Oh, I saw the episode!

don't tell me how it ends, I have only seen the first round!

@rumtscho you could add cocoa to half of the batter...
<runs>

but I love the feel of the show, I'm a sucker for this whimsical atmosphere
now that you say it, the batter did turn out a bit runny (tapioca flour)...
and I didn't add baking soda, so they aren't turning very dark on their own

Cow pattern waffles... no need to pipe anything.
Enough.
I just overheard hubby starting a movie. But I am not sure whether I am in the best state of mind to watch Forest Gump.

7:08 PM
ah, they do turn brown when I forget to go take them out of the iron >.<
also, don't try the toothpick marbling trick on waffles, the underside gets firm too quickly for that (TIL)
yup, cowspots worked
or rather irregular cheetah
what state of mind do you need for forrest gump?

7:26 PM
@rumtscho emotionally stable for the underlying sadness?

@rumtscho That came out the same year as Shawshank and won all the awards. Phft.

3 hours later…
10:58 PM
So... I started watching Hamilton earlier... Wow, it's sensational. Best musical since Les Mis
The energy, the intensity, the emotion, the variety, the humour, the singing... I just can't fault it, there's nothing I could think of that would improve it

11:14 PM
I've only heard it, not seen it. But YEAH! OMFG! Les Mis vs Hamilton. Tough call!
@Mithrandir24601 I've never asked. Whad'ya think of Les Mis the movie vs the stage show?

@Jolenealaska The film is better than nothing, but it's nothing compared to the stage show, which I've seen live twice (and been involved with in school once)
@Jolenealaska So, the music is amazing. But just watching it as well... It's on another level. Goes from 'this musical is amazing' to 'this musical is comparable to Les Mis', which is something I didn't think was possible
Like, I have a short list (<10) of things that I view as sheer perfection and Hamilton is definitely one of them

I was bummed they didn't go sung-through, and I was very disappointed in the Thénardiers. Master of the House was a severe disappointment. But Anne Hathaway knocked it out of the solar system IMO.
Not with a gorgeous voice, but with acting chops.

11:30 PM
Thing about Les Mis is that I haven't seen or heard a perfect recording of it - if you get Valjean and Javert right, the Thenardiers just aren't quite on point and vice versa
@Jolenealaska It's not all about the nice singing though :P
This is the best recording I know of, of Send in the Clowns, but is her singing ability incredible? Not at all

My first love was the 25th, and I keep going back to it. I just pretend not to know Marius.

Just my opinion :P But I don't want to be a stuffy music person either
@Jolenealaska Oh yeah, he was... Spectacularly not great

Poor guy. The internet was so mean to him. He did just fine, really. But he was on a stage with Alfie Boe.

@Jolenealaska I've actually seen Alfie Boe live :D

@Mithrandir24601 I just saw her on John Oliver. She's a treasure!

11:37 PM
@Jolenealaska Dunno if you know this, but she's considered a 'national treasure' of the UK, so yeah :P

I did not know that :)

So essentially, that's what happens when you put a regular pop singer alongside Alfie Boe and Norm Lewis. It just... Isn't great in comparison

Quite sad, and the teeny-boppers there to see him. Poor guy couldn't catch a break. I did give him some credit for Empty Chairs. If he weren't so outclassed, that might have felt pretty strong.
@Mithrandir24601 What music was he doing?
Have you seen this?
If not, prepare to love it.
So just a few hours ago I saw that I can get Disney+ for $7 this month, and they have Hamilton.
I guess that's my plan for tonight.
