Hopefully we will get a few new users in here that can help keep the room going now that the links to it are up on the site
having the option to have real time chat and thrash out small issues outside of the comments will be useful I think

5 hours later…
3:04 PM
Just wanted to say hi to all, and test sending a message while the room is mostly empty. I'll have this tab open all day at work, so I'm curious to see what kind of noise it makes when others post messages.

JustRightMenus
Greetings!

ah ha! some users!
welcome!

Bob
Hello, all.

Great to see some people in here, I hope I'm able to make it Sunday for the community meeting!
I've got to go to my wife's sister's wedding, 3000 miles from home, so I'm hoping my phone can handle it :)

JustRightMenus
Me too... I should at least be able to lurk around if not chat much - that's baby's dinnertime. (There's no such thing as a good time when there's a 5 mo. baby in the house.)

JustRightMenus
3:14 PM
Where's the wedding, @stephen?

even if you can't make sunday feel free to bring up any issues at any time. The community meeting is a chance for us to have a 'concentrated' session, but was also an opportunity to advertise the fact that this service is available to us to get people to use it.
I think @hobodave has tried to get a cooking room off the ground a few times but there has never been enough interest to keep the room open

Sis in law lives in LA, so flying out there, but the wedding itself is in Tuscon
Friday we land in LA, and then from Sat to Wed I'll actually be camping in the desert in AZ :)
Then the following Sunday is the wedding
Should be a fun trip, the wedding location looks real nice: haciendadelsol.com
I live in Pennsylvania, btw. So quite the trip for us :)
@sam - thanks for the info, I mostly just wanted to watch the chat and get to know people, I know the site isn't really a GTKY type forum, but I feel like I know a lot of the regulars from their answers, so it's cool to see them in a more "relaxed" atmosphere chat atmosphere like this
So far the site works great, no problems on my end!

:)
food looks good on the front page of that place

JustRightMenus
That's what I thought.

making me hungry. might have to go for a run before I eat something and spoil my dinner

JustRightMenus
3:22 PM
And I agree that this chat could be a great place to bring discussions, avoiding a lot of back-and-forth in comments that would not otherwise be very helpful to other users.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about that, there are a few functions before the wedding there too including the rehearsal, so I should get a few opportunities to try their food :)
@Just - agreed, I wonder if once we determine there's enough interest, would it be worth making a semi-prominent link somewhere on the site...has that been done on other SO properties?

@JustRight yeah, a lot of questions end up with a whole lot of 'meta' guff in the comments which just pollutes the question

JustRightMenus
I'm not really familiar with the others sites, so I'm not sure if others have a prominent chat link.

I think the long term aim is to have a link up near the meta link for the chat link I think.

Bob
It looks like there already is a link up top...

3:24 PM
although don't quote me on that

JustRightMenus
@Sam I think that would be a good place.

Bob
"got a question about the site itself? meta.cooking is the place to talk about things like what questions are appropriate. We also have a chat room."
(links to meta and this chat room)

spoulson
How about pictures of food? :)

yeah, that was added yesterday
I think eventually there will be a chat.cooking.stackexchange.com sub site, like there is a meta.cooking.se.com
and there will be a chat.blah for each site
at least I think that was the plan at one point
@spoulson if you want to post some pics, go for it
I need more motivation to go running :)
so there must be foodies that fancy some of this
I mean as long as you have fried it in butter it must be ok, no?

spoulson

3:33 PM
@Bob good catch, I didn't see the addition of the chat link. Very nice!

spoulson
Krispy Kreme bacon cheddar cheeseburgers

Bob

mmm, is that the Luther, two krispy kremes around a bacon cheeseburger?
delicious!

@spoulson and what did you have for lunch?

Bob
I see the "pictures of food" is getting off the an unhealthy start
*to an

3:37 PM
I hate to ask a stupid question, but how do you add an inline image?

Shog9
:164419 paste the URL

very nice
speaking of unhealthy...

3:38 PM
How about something that we've actually cooked?

awesome, that worked

Bob
That's squid, stuffed with more squid, served on top of squid noodles
It was squidtastic

looks good

spoulson
@SamHolder I haven't had lunch yet, so I'm getting a kick out of all these bacon grossouts

mmm...squid
this was before i got my new nikon, so bear with the picture quality
that's a batch of granola bars based on alton browns recipes that i referenced in a post about granola bar storage
cut and bagged:
granola bar mise-en-place :)

JustRightMenus
3:41 PM
That reminds me, I still have more granola hanging out in the freezer.

JustRightMenus
I made way, way, way too much.

@just: i always, always have that problem too
i do a lot of bulk cooking in my house, and tend to go overboard a lot of the time

JustRightMenus
I'm currently working on this week's menu... I need to clean out a lot of old ingredients. Looks like I'm making granola bars, too, now.

a little while back, i made a bunch of breakfast burritos, half sausage, half bacon, they turned out really good

JustRightMenus
Ooooh, I forgot about breakfast burritos! I should make & freeze some. They work out so well for easy breakfasts.

3:43 PM
@Just: great idea...i also find granola is great for cleaning out the pantry
yeah, they're so easy to make...especially when i enlist my wife to do the egg scrambling for me so i can concentrate on the meats and the assembly ;)

JustRightMenus
So, it looks like you brown them post-assembly? I've never done that.

yeah, i assemble them and then brown them up in the pan to help melt the cheese and seal them together - also adds a little texture when reheating in the microwave at work, they never really get crisp of course, but they're not as ... doughy as if you don't brown them

hmm they look the good candidates for hotel room cooking, about the right shape to warm up on the iron in the morning. that would crisp them up too.

wow, that's a really good idea sam!
i may have to make a couple in LA before leaving for Tuscon, test that theory out

JustRightMenus
@Sam Awesome! I'll have to bring some on our next trip. We frequent a hotel that does not offer breakfast... or even coffee. It's sad. It's actually the reason I bought my husband a french press. You can make great coffee with just a microwave!

3:48 PM
hotels that don't offer breakfast make me a very sad panda :(

I've always been a little fascinated by hotel room cooking after seeing a guy make muffins I think and cooking the on the iron. and cooking pasta in the kettle.

i mentioned in one of the questions on the site, i got a corningware microwave browning tray - i'm going to take on my next hotel trip and see how well it works
muffins on the iron, wow, that's thinking outside the box

JustRightMenus
It reminds me of dorm room cooking. We were not allowed to have an open element, and I worked during cafeteria hours, so I had to get pretty creative in order to eat well.

@Sam, you just completely inspired me to "show off" a little this week - everyone knows me as the cook in the family, but I don't think they'd expect something that delicious using just what you can find in a hotel!
this video is really cool!

JustRightMenus
3:55 PM
@Sam that's a great video! I am so inspired. :) How fun.

spoulson
@JustRightMenus What cooking methods could you use? Just microwave?

spoulson
lighter?

JustRightMenus
I had: microwave, electric pot that was meant for boiling water but I used it for mac&cheese a lot, toaster (pop-up style).

JustRightMenus
Briefly, I got away with an electric frying pan. That got shut down, though.

JustRightMenus
No open flame, no open elements.

4:02 PM
I got put on housing probation for using an electric griddle my freshman year :)
Well, a combination of using that, and removing the smoke detector temporarily so I could effectively use it...

JustRightMenus
Good job! :)

4:14 PM
oh wow we have users in here!
hi everyone

hi hobodave

Shog9
hi doctor dave!

@hobodave it worked!

:)

spoulson
4:22 PM
@JustRightMenus @stephennmcdonald The big question is: Was this a culinary school? :)

Bob
DO culinary schools have dorms?

JustRightMenus
Ha. No, it was a little Baptist school in backwoods South Carolina.

JustRightMenus
The oddest culinary school I've heard of is Paul Smith's, in New York. My dad went there to get a forestry degree. Seriously. The same school offers culinary degrees and forestry.

JustRightMenus
...and the baby's awake. Catch you all later!

bye @Just!
Mine was at Univ of Delaware actually

spoulson
4:33 PM
@stephennmcdonald You live in DE still?

4:46 PM
sorry - was heating up lunch. actually i'm in PA now, southeastern PA/bucks county
but my dad and stepmom still live in Newark, DE
@spoulson - just saw that you're in middletown, that's where my best friend lives, was just down there last weekend for my fantasy draft
did you go to high school down there?

spoulson
No, just moved down 6 years ago

spoulson
Grew up in NJ

neat, so did I - born in Trenton :)
how do you like middletown? very nice area, a little far from philly for my taste, but not that bad, and close to baltimore
definitely being built up a lot over the past 5 years

spoulson
I love the semi-rural environment

spoulson
It's been really built up in the last 10 years, but it's still much less so than NJ

4:53 PM
oh yeah, definitely, if i hadn't had to move to where i am now for work, i would have moved towards middletown (from bear/newark) when we sold our house

spoulson
5:09 PM
Unfortunately, all the high paying jobs are a bit of a drive from here.

yeah, that was my problem, i was actually commuting from Newark to Conshohocken, which was an hour on a good day - and since i had to take 476/the blue route, it was more like 1.5 hours each way

spoulson
Blue route SUCKS at rush hour

Truth!!

spoulson
I'm doing ~45-60 min commute to Wilmington

yeah, there's no fast way from middletown to wilmington during rush hour - at least they're done that bridge traffic on 896 so people are using that again, clearing up rt 1
I went to HS up here in Lower Bucks County, PA (where I am now) and moved back up here because it's a bit of a Pharma hub, and even in a recession people want their drugs, so the money and jobs are there (for now)

spoulson
5:16 PM
They're actually expanding 301 through there.

spoulson
They're building a toll road to replace the stretch of 896 between 13 and 301

wow, that's a good idea, i hope it works out

spoulson
It's going to cut diagonally from around the 301/299 intersection up to just before the Route 1 C&D canal bridge

oh man, that sounds perfect
i hope it doesn't take too long

spoulson
I'm sure it will be

5:23 PM
that 896 bridge construction sure felt like it took forever :)
