Here what I'm thinking, and going to brain dump here while I'm at work:

Opening scene is the MC being woken from a dream by their mother pinching them. The mother stayed up from a stressful council meeting and baked through the night to relieve stress/get a head start on the days work. She's been chewing some kind of chewable caffeinated mushroom gum (like guargum made from beetle nut) to help her stay awake but it makes her harder to understand. MC gets confused and ends up eating/misplacing the bread, and has to go on a mini-adventure to replace it.
