There even was a life-size blue whale figurine kite. In the air. Although the wind was a bit weak.

It’s a true kite. Think “oversized wind sock”, with small openings at the front.

I never knew that counted as a kite.

I have never flown a kite myself, so my knowledge of kites is obviously limited :) Interesting to learn that now.

They seem to have a “carrier type” kite above that helps getting them into the air.

Yeah - they both work great in terms of final results, and there are good reasons to prefer one or the other due to practical details, but the answers don't reflect that, and even pure assertions of tradition get decent score.
