Well, someone is awake :-P

@derobert I'm lurking
but I'm no good to help with moderation/smackdown around here as I don't have the rep to even VTC

@waxeagle Well, there are other mods, actually, so it shouldn't be a big deal. Yossarian and Aaronut at least

@derobert that's good.

you can help, if you see something that needs closing, flag it

@derobert yeah I've been doing that. Trying to hang out more here lately cuz I love food/cooking and got roped into writing for y'all blog :P

5:03 PM
LOL
yeah, we randomly abduct people and force them to write blog posts, how else would we get a new one every week? :-P

@derobert It works :). I was in here innocently stalking aarthi and all of the sudden I'm agreeing to write a blog post

Yep, and now we've got enough that we can suspend abductions 'til at least September.

@derobert excellent :)

Hmmm. There is something to my behind-right making a weird sound in my office. Not sure what it is. Sounds sort of like water quickly boiling, or maybe breath...
I keep looking, don't see a monster.
But if there is a monster, let it beware, there are still open slots in October!

@derobert lol
I might snag a Nov slot to document apple butter making/canning :). Not sure yet though
(if y'all don't have anything on that already)

5:12 PM
I'm not sure exactly what @rumtscho will cover in the remainder of Cherry, Berry, Nut. But it does sound like an interesting topic for fall. Though isn't November a little late for apple harvest?

@derobert well we'll be heading to an apple festival in mid/late october

Yeah, October 24 is open... :-P

@derobert definitely can't do that one, may not end up at festival til 20/21st

Oddly, I'm having a real hard time getting Google to tell me exactly when apple season ends, even when asking just about Virginia.
Finally found one. Late October is the latest. Of course, I imagine south of here, the season is longer.

@derobert look for apple festivals they should happen about mid season

5:19 PM
@waxeagle curious where you are that late-October is mid season?

@derobert might be late season. I'm in NW GA
yeah wow, that's the very end of the season. Hmm will have to shoot or first weekend of festival this year

I guess its OK to run it after the season is over, on the theory that "well, you picked your apples, you have a ton in the fridge, what to do with them..."
I can put you down for a tentative date, so that we remember to keep it open for you...

@derobert exactly
how about nov 14?
give me some time to actually do it :)

Ok. I'll put you down for Nov. 14

1 hour later…
6:33 PM
hi there!
I have a quick question if you don't mind.
I came upon this recipe
And was wondering what "drained black beans" are
google is not helping much for some reason I don't really understand how you can cook brownies with beans

@Trufa you buy a can of black beans and pour the liquid off
or you could cook 2C black beans from scratch and then drain the liquid

@waxeagle That sounds sort of disgusting or am I crazy?
@waxeagle Ohh sorry and what is "2c"?

@Trufa 2 cups
that's about what comes in a can IIRC

@waxeagle ohh, makes sense, I'd guess that "t" is teaspoon?

@Trufa little t is teaspoon, big T is tablespoon

6:37 PM
@waxeagle Ohh great to know!!

as far as taste goes with blackbeans in brownies, I honestly don't know, thinking about it I don't think it would be bad (but I've had and enjoyed both zuchinni and chipotle powder in brownies)

black beans don't have so much flavor that they would be noticeable in brownies.
I would be more worried about the texture of their skins- they are a lot tougher than other kinds of beans.

@Sobachatina true, I'd consider mashing and straining them before putting them into something like this

@waxeagle I suppose it depends on the audience.
If they like beans and are adventurous eaters then a few bean skins wouldn't be bad.
If the beans were meant to sneak fiber into the diet of an unsuspecting meat-and-potatoes husband then I agree that they should be strained.

@Sobachatina yeah good point I wouldn't strain them for my family (partly because I'm lazy, partly cuz I wouldn't mind and neither would my wife). But for company I might
but then I wouldn't be making no sugar brownies for company :)

6:51 PM
So... you're saying your relationship with your wife isn't... strained?
I'll be here all week.

@Sobachatina it's more like being in a chinoise :P

7:07 PM
@Sobachatina which not coincidentally is a toy we purchased just for making apple butter :) (although we've used it for some other things)

@waxeagle I'll give it a try!
Thank you very much @waxeagle !

@Trufa np at all.

Sorry for the delay, had to pick up a phone

@Trufa np, SE chat is designed to be asynch at some level

@waxeagle Yep, it works pretty well in that sense...
I'll try it out and will report back later...

7:19 PM
@Trufa sounds good to me. I'm interested. That seems like a ton of sugar sub...

Yep, that's the part I don't really like, but otherwise I would be cheating on my diet :)
I'm on a very strict keto diet

@Trufa yeah I understand that. I'd see how the batter tastes with less stevia and only add more if you feel like it needs it. 3-4C is a lot for brownies if it's similar to sugar
(that's also an incredible amount of variability)
also, there's no chocolate in those...is that intentional?

@waxeagle yep! It actually says you should start with 2C ans see from there
@waxeagle I guess so! but it's a very strange recipe

@Trufa ah missed where the * ref'd to

In keto you can eat some very bitter chocolates

7:28 PM
@Trufa gotcha

@waxeagle :) And since the diet, I'm less and less used to sweet things, so it wont be a problem

@Trufa good deal

I really see this going two very different ways
@waxeagle I also have another question if you have a minute

@Trufa I've got the time, no clue if I have the expertise :)

hehe thanks, what happens if I cook the brownies in a slower/ less temperature enviroment

7:34 PM
@Trufa I'm not entirely familiar with the chemistry here, but my best guess is you end up with much dryer brownies

@waxeagle hmm ok, I'll guess that's a sacrifice I have to make the sacrifice, the recipe I'm making can't be in such a hot oven

@Trufa can you just wait and put the brownies in after your done cooking the other thing?

@waxeagle hmm, to put it discretely this will be special brownies

@Trufa i c

@waxeagle :)

7:42 PM
@Trufa as long as you're eggs are getting cooked they should be ok to eat (toothpick comes out clean etc). Just beware that texture/moisture may be an issue.
you might actually ask the temp question on the site. No need to mention why if you don't care to.

@waxeagle That might be a good idea.
@waxeagle I've been checking and the temperature will not be a problem
Lot's of other special recipes reccomend that settings

@Trufa good to know :)

7:59 PM
pokes @Mien

@hobodave Ouch.
Are you a dad already? :P

not yet

Come on, answer me :D
Ah.

super soon though

Yeah, I thought something like that.

8:00 PM
due Monday

Are you excited? Afraid?

@waxeagle Well thanks again for all the help I'll let you know how it goes :)

neither, impatient really

Good luck! Don't faint!

I want to get on with it

8:01 PM
Hehe

I'm ready to start fatherin'

Do you know the gender?
I'm sure you're good at fathering.
Much better than me I suppose.

@hobodave this your first?

girl
indeed she is

Cool :)
Name?

8:02 PM
Audrey

@hobodave good luck! hope she is a good sleeper

Audrey Crazylastname

I plan on getting her drunk if necessary
a little bourbon in the bottle, bam lights out

You really will be a good dad.
You meant 'a little milk in the bourbon', no?

who said anything about milk?
:D

8:04 PM
You know you shouldn't cook dinner for her the first weeks, right?
Don't be mad when she doesn't want to try your steak.

haha
how have you been @Mien?

I'm doing fine, thanks :)
Passed my exams, went to Germany for a good week, now I'm doing a job for a few weeks, then I'll move and start my internship.
It's been a while since I talked to you :P

You've been busy
As have I, new job doesn't permit much of this really
Not so much permit, as make inconvenient

Ah yes, how's the new job?

I love it

8:07 PM
That's good.

where are you moving to?

Ghent.
Only 20 miles or so from where I live now
I will go home in weekends, to do the laundry etc. :P

8:58 PM
@waxeagle turns out black beans have lots of carbs :(

@Trufa yes

@waxeagle So no brownies for me...
I'm looking at some peanut butter cookies, but I'm not sure I can find peanut butter in my country

@Trufa pretty sure we were able to find it in Costa Rica and Ecuador, although you might have to hit up an import store.

@Trufa Just have someone load you in a large slingshot, and shoot you to somewhere you can find peanut butter easily. Then the same to get home.

@waxeagle I have only once seen pb here, and it was years ago, but if I find (good idea about the import store) I think I might have found a good alternative

9:05 PM
@derobert I love context.

Or, on a serious note, can you get peanuts there? Do you have a food processor? The Interwebs inform me you could make some.

@derobert I'm on a diet but I'm pretty heavy yet to be thrown around in a slingshot...

@Trufa nah, it'll be fine, you'll just take out more pigs

@derobert I do have peanuts, I do have a very s***** food processor, I should check if it still works

Well, I imagine you could also do it by hand. Advantage there is, the sheer work of it will more than cover for the calories in the cookies :-P

9:15 PM
@derobert hehe yeah, I think I will just cheat this one time...

@Trufa Google lets me know you can indeed make peanut butter using a mortar and pestle!
It even gave a picture!

@derobert hehe my patience is a very limited resource, and should be used wisely, I don't think using a mortar would be an efficient use

Well, especially if you tried to use it without the pestle.

@derobert :)
