@tyblu nom nom nominate yourself

17 hours later…
6:31 PM
Hey @all - How've things been for the past month and a half?
I'll nominate myself, with the stipulation that I start summer classes next week, and will have to see what the workload is like before I can evaluate how much time I have available to help.
I
(I fatfingered the apostrophe and took too long editing to fix that post. Does not bode well.)
I'd love to help out where I can - but I simply can't devote 1/24th of my life to the site.
The recourse of dropping out is welcome, but I understand that the dynamics are different when there are less than 5 candidates.

6:52 PM
I don't want to assert something thats not true, but this answer seems a bit fishy. It is a good answer and all, but I have never seen anyone get 21 up votes so fast on an answer in this community:

A: Why does a resistor need to be on the anode?

Carl RaymondThe resistor can be on either side of the LED, but it must be present. When two or more components are in series, the current will be the same through all of them, and so it doesn't matter which order they are in. I think the way to read "the resistor must be connected to the anode" as "the res...

@tyblu Your meager activity hasn't always been so meager. I think you should throw your name in the mix. Like @Kortuk said, some mods haven't shown a lot of activity, but I don't think it's going to take that much time and your help early on was great. I'd vote for you.
@Kellenjb Wow. That is startling! It does look fishy, but I'd guess that it was just an short, basic answer that lingered at the top of the homepage for a while. Last time I was here, there was a sticky about basic questions getting the most upvotes... maybe it was part of this conversation
@W5VO Then join it!

hmm, hadn't seen that, explains it very well though
I liked endolith's answer more, but it was more complex

@W5VO aww.... I'm hurt! JK. I'd love to hear some criticism of previous moderation/edit actions, answers, or comments. I know my questions haven't been the best, but I've pretty much given up on trying to help the site with good questions.
It's just not my style. When I have a problem, I go research the topic area, and find a solution. I like that process, so it's not fulfilling to post the problem and have someone else write up the solution. I'd rather spend some free time doing that, or creating a place (by moderating/editing) where that research can be done efficiently.

7:08 PM
@reemrevnivek I usually fall into what you are describing for the research method. I have started to view it slightly differently. I do all of that research, come to my own conclusion, then ask the question i had and see if i get any better answers

@Kellenjb That's definitely a good idea for some kinds of questions. You can probably write a better question with the knowledge you get from the research. I'll have to try that next time.

Q: What is the relation between FFT length and frequency resolution?

KellenjbIf I have sampled a signal using proper sampling methods (Nyquist, filtering, etc) how do I relate the length of my FFT to the resulting frequency resolution I can obtain? Like if I have a 2,000 Hz and 1,999 Hz sine wave, how would I determine the length of FFT needed to accurately tell the diff...

Q: How do I determine the fastest time between pulses I can measure?

KellenjbI need to calculate the elapsed time between the rising edge of one pulse to the rising edge of the next pulse. This needs to be in a mobile environment, but I am not attached to any solution as long as its mobile. I have 3 questions: What is the best way of calculating this time? I have though...

Both of those were questions that i figured out very fast on my own, but i figured they could be helpful to others
and those didnt really take any research, just a slight bit of thought

I wouldn't have thought to post those! Having questions like that on the site (questions which really just take a bit of thought) are the stuff of the web that is making Google a reliable third half of our brain.

7:32 PM
I must admit there are some bits of knowledge that are so simple that i dont care to remember them, instead i just use google every time i need to know

8:23 PM
@reemrevnivek, hi

Hi!
How've things been the past month or so?
I took a hiatus towards the end of my semester, and I haven't been following the site at all.
Are you going to nominate yourself for the community moderator elections?
That's news to me.

@reemrevnivek A lot of work!

@DanielGrillo Yup, same here.

@reemrevnivek We missed you around here.

Sorry - but school takes priority when time gets tight.
Just finished last week, though. 4.0 this semester!

8:28 PM
@reemrevnivek I'll nominate myself tonight. And you?

Just put mine in here
I'm surprised that more people didn't nominate themselves.
I wonder if this says anything about the free time available to/taken by engineers as opposed to programmers?

@reemrevnivek Do you know I'm from Brazil? I don't understand (4.0 this semester). Is this good or bad? :-)
@reemrevnivek Me too. And I don't know. I'm an engineer working as a programmer. So I think I have more time than others. I can visit here frequently, but cannot spend a lot of time.

@DanielGrillo - Yup, knew that, but didn't know that they used other than a 4.0 scale. In the US, at least, performance in school is indicated by a 'grade point average' or GPA on a scale of 0-4, with 4 representing a perfect grade (yes, it's a good thing) and 0 representing complete failure.

@reemrevnivek I've been thinking long and hard about it but my electronics isn't enough to help the community this is why i've not nominated my self
I always thought there were people that should be mods and they have nominated themselves. This was one of the reasons why i decided against it. As they would be of more value to the community.

@reemrevnivek Congratulations! But I confess that I am not surprised by the quality of your responses and comments.

8:38 PM
@Dean - You need to be an electronics genius to be a moderator! And a good thing, too, or I wouldn't have a chance :)
I think that your character and attitude are far more important. Better a beginner who is fair, patient, and helpful, than a genius who is partial, dismissive, and unfriendly.\
@Daniel - Thanks! I was a little surprised - My overall GPA is a 3.375, which puts me in the top third of my class (not sure the exact percentage).
This semester was a boost, though.

@reemrevnivek i have a 3.0, i dont pay much attention to GPA though. High gpa's can be very missleading
also, you had a typo when talking to @dean

@reemrevnivek How does the US system work as you say your a senior student? As in the UK we have undergraduates who are working towards getting a degree they can be mature students which means that they are doing their degree over the age of 21. From the degree most people get jobs but others stay on to either do a masters or a PhD.

@Kellenjb Agreed, but it's worth working for. I think that one's class rank within your major or department is more important, because some schools or departments make it easy to get inflated GPAs.
@Kellenjb Too late now...

@Dean I'm an Elec. engineer, but for the last 7 years I had to work as a programmer. So my knowledge about electronics have decreased. And, when I was invited, my English was worst than now. Despite all this, yet I was invited.

@Dean most ungergraduates graduate here between the age of 20-23 if I were to guess. most of them go on to get jobs, while some go to get masters

8:45 PM
@Dean Sorry if that's confusing to you - I'm 22 years old, and in my fourth (going on fifth...) year of school. I'll reword it, since it's linked for the elections...

I know I could be a better mod and I've committed some mistakes, but I think my work was not so bad.

I used "Senior" in the Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior sense, not the 60-years-old sense.

@reemrevnivek I wouldn't even go that far. I have been a TA for our capstone (senior design) course and we get access to GPAs of students. there is a very weak correlation between GPA and ability to do real engineering.

@reemrevnivek Fair enough

if anything its more like a bell shape... the "middle" GPAs tend to do very well while the upper end and lower end don't do as good

8:49 PM

haven't heard of it but looks interesting

@DanielGrillo Yes but I feel that their are better people for the mod position than me :/ dude I feel like a guy who is terrible at their job now.

@Kellenjb Interesting! I would have guessed that you'd find some bookworms at the upper end, but I wouldn't have gone that far. Better start failing some classes....

@Dean Ok. I understand you.

At least for us i would say our "middle" was [2.75 - 3.6]. of course there is always outliers

8:54 PM
@DanielGrillo I was going to nominate my self if we only had the 3 nominations to give a bit more of an election for the 3 places. But on the other hand having someone with a lesser knowledge would be beneficial to the community because it would allow the clever people to answer questions as @Kortuk has mentioned several times moderating takes up most of his time on ED so he doesn't get much of a chance to write answers.

@dean although @Kortuk may just care too much ;-)

@Kellenjb yeah suppose so

@Kellenjb That doesn't sound too bad. Some schools (my high school, our community college, a few private colleges in the area) have pretty bad grade inflation.
@Kellenjb Too much for whom - Us or him? I think the community has benefited greatly from all the work Kortuk has put into it in this critical beta/launch time.
If it's affecting him personally, he really needs to take a break.
I'd put in a downvote for him as a gesture of thanks.

i absolutely despise companies that have a minimum of GPA of 3.5 or higher just to be able to apply

Just kidding!

8:58 PM
Oh bugger it i will nominate myself

@Kellenjb I think it's safe to ignore those companies. If they're that disconnected from reality, why would you want to work there?

@reemrevnivek i'm just playing. he cares about this community a lot, and i know him personally and it doesn't seem to effect his personal life at all, he is just unable to answer questions as much
@reemrevnivek Sandia National Labs is the one that really gets to me. i would hope my tax dollars could go to better employees

@Kellenjb Well, that breaks my assumption that you can ignore them.

:-) sadly, despite my opinions of them, i am working under a grant from them

Hey guys! I have to go home now. See you latter.

9:05 PM
@DanielGrillo Bye Daniel

@Daniel - Till next time. Don't forget to submit that nomination
@Kellenjb Then you should be careful what you say! Don't worry, though, I won't tell.

9:29 PM
This question is a duplicate of a less-localized question, and should be closed (IMO):

Q: SMD Markings for SOT23-5 Package

Strube09Hello does anyone know what component has "B6PP" in a SOT23-5. How about "H102B" also in a SOT23-5. Thanks!

Hate to close a new user's first question, though....
Any ideas for a better mechanism?
@All - Good luck in the moderator elections.
I'm out for the night.

@reemrevnivek I feel your pain. If he could word it slightly differently though to make it valuable to the community it would be worth keeping like rewording to be discovering manufacturers codes on SOT23-5 devices

10:10 PM
@reemrevnivek you're better at answering questions than counting, apparently... You've got the 5th highest rep (I said top 4 excluding admins) :)
