@tyblu I would have done it for him.
@tyblu god-damn happyf'ing birthday
@tyblu If you only find one message at a time let me absorb the rep loss, I can handle 100. If you find two, let me know, I will absorb rep loss. I will try to keep the adding bounties for people below the 3k rep line.
@tyblu, the 3k rep line gives you almost every feature when our site graduates.
@Jin, How are things going on the graduation process right now? Any interesting updates or are we just waiting to hear back on the Robotics part of the name.
@tyblu, I think a good way to start this bounty add from here on out is to notify the user that we are going to add rep to their question to get it some extra attention. That way if they have any confusion they understand the reason.

@Kortuk Good point! I will let you know if I find more than 1 question I'd like to see sponsored. Currently riding the 3k line myself... getting more doesn't seem to be an issue.

Seems like if you didn't care much about what's L vs R (mixing/instrument-wise) you could do whatever
just a lot of phase abuse there

@tyblu, Yeah, the major trade-off being that you are a long way off from moderator tools and minus being deposed rep has no affect on my rights.
@tyblu, I think you need either 10k or 20k rep to access everything at full power on the graduated site.

Yeah, 10k on SO. S'ok.. I'll get there, too ;) . Just need a few free weekends.

12:38 AM
Takes 20k for everything (20k being req'd for "trusted user", where you can edit whatever tag wikis)

@NickT y'know, that's really cool, but I don't think it's real. I've done this XY crap with an analog, and to get those shapes it takes some f'ed up tunes.

@tyblu, it is also very very important you ask me to do the bounty if you think you would like to be the one to answer the question.

I think you can get just about whatever you want if you abuse the phase between the two channels

@tyblu, as in, you see a really great question, think maybe if you had a saturday you could, but someone should, let me know.

12:42 AM
@Kortuk Will definitely do that.
@NickT ... two separate users; I see.. still don't buy it :D . Very interesting, though. May try it out now that my skepticism is disputed...

@tyblu, @NickT, I would like to see you guys do that. I have skepticism also. Right angles would be hella hard.

using the original lossless file is going to be an absolute requirement if you try it
Why's a right angle hard? If you feed two out-of-phase triangle waves to an XY scope, you'd get a parallelogram of some sort, right?

here's the YouScope (popular XY display clip) clip: tyblu.ca/misc/youscope-wave.flac
(Turn the volume down... way down.)
I'm sure you've seen the YouScope video, but here it is...

2 hours later…
2:30 AM
@NickT I did not think triangle waves in audio were common, I have been wrong, I have done audio work, but once I verify function I move on, I never play with the audio at all.

2:49 AM
@Kortuk That's true, but if you're trying to make shapes on an XY-scope with audio, you could place them there intentionally

@NickT, Yeah, I understand that, just did not think of it as I would never feed that into audio. They were fun audio clips, but they could have that stuff on them.
Was very cool

@tyblu this room name needs to be changed t osomething more distinct so I can open it up by just typing something into chrome's bar

@NickT what about goo.gl/Ztc1C ?

a bit contrived and hard to remember
Can you change it as room owner?

... I'm the room owner?
/checks links frantically
yoiks, I am. Guess I talk too much. I'll see if I can.

3:01 AM
that jus tmeans you created it initially

@NickT what about when you type chat. into the address bar? It pulls it up for me.

@StackElectronix, The Stack Exchange network
507 tweets, 12 followers, following 0 users

I also go to chat.meta.stackoverflow.com and the gaming chat room as well

Yes, I can change the name of the chat room... is this a good idea? Maybe to match the new graduated name, whatever it will be...

That should be released soon. I am bothering people in the other room. I can change the name also.
All of the mods are mods in chat.
@NickT, the reason I got confused by the flag on my message was that when you flag in a chatroom every mod on every site gets the flag in chat. Every mod online has to try to figure out what it is for. I was trying to determine if there was an actual issue so that I could resolve it.
@NickT, I thought it was joking around, but I had to be sure.

3:07 AM
Why are people even bothering with the name thing right now?

@NickT, I like putting bookmark folders in the bookmarks bar. Could you go with a SE folder with SO, E&R, E&R-chat, Gaming, Gaming-chat [etc.] links?

that is totally unrelated to "release"
viz. gaming, mathematics
diy -> home improvement is the biggest "counterexample"

@NickT, because he wants the site design to look visually appealing and the name changing makes a difference. Release also gets us our own personalized web address. We do not want our address to be electronicsandrobotics.com and the site to be electronics and engineering.

Y'know, I don't think I ever made this room :P ... some sneaky admin/script bumped my rights; like unknown increases to credit card limits!

(which is not a possible name, just an example)

3:11 AM
Name will obviously be tybluselectronicshaven.com
'cause I select any Ron I see, who is shaven.

@Kortuk The cooking one is the only one I know of that actually has it
I remember a post by Jeff or someone about how that is hardly the case with all of them, and that the "name" is not something that will not necessarily (and it so rarely is) at release

wow, an RSS/Atom feed can be added to this room.

add our twitter feed that gives the question so new questions pop up in here.

@Kortuk Done.. will see if the Twitter API is accepted, as I don't think it's Atom or RSS...

haha
I will look into it more later.
I am sure there is a post on how to do it. I can probably get it working.
I have to just to work now, be back in a couple hours.
Just spent all my time bothering the teacher's lunge.
lounge*

It might just work on its own. It's set to output via regular chat message and not a 'ticker' at the top, since there's only a dozen or so new questions per day.

@NickT, I missed that, sorry to say.

I was going to suggest as a chat message. I think at current volumes that would be nice.

@RebeccaChernoff, thank you for letting him know, I was going to look into it later and try to fix it. I guess you would be the chat pro though.

@tyblu, should be done now, I just did it.

@Kortuk i'm still preparing to launch the site on Monday

4:46 AM
@W5VO I would guess because there is a 2 day delay after a close before you are allowed to vote delete. Like a cooloff period to avoid people's emotions.
@Jin I am excited!

@Kortuk That sure doesn't help with remembering to delete the question

haha, yeah/
it is something that you have to occasionally look back in on.
How do you like the feed @W5VO.

I like it

I do also. I meant to look into it months ago and forgot.
tyblu reminded me and @RebeccaChernoff fixed it.

This feed is pretty sweet.

@tyblu why so you don't have to go to the main page to see new content?

@Dean er, I'm not sure, but I don't think every question is guaranteed to be Tweeted, especially if their creation/bump rate picks up. Imagine the SO feed would be crazy, if so.
Bet they all are for now, though.

nope there not as i follow the bot

@Dean uh oh, quick: edit! *they're

How do i edit?

6:24 PM
Arrow on the left-hand-side of the message gives a drop-down menu. Editing is allowed for a few minutes only. ... Sure you can edit after a reply -- just not after the max. time has elapsed...

you can't edit once someone has replied

it won't let me

i'm just buggin ya anyway ;)
@Dean How did your maze-robot project go?

@tyblu its going well
need to get it working there are some bugs in the code so it doesn't operate as it should

6:27 PM
Ah -- what kind of bugs?

just moving :L as theres no message passing in picaxe basic its had to be implemented so i could use the same subroutines and it know what its last instruction was
the problems occur when adding sensing in
i have it so far sensing a wall to the right then moving forwards if clear
then stop when a wall is infront

Ah.. you can't make your own subroutines? you have to use a certain library's?

yes i could but to reduce the memory footprint i wanted to use the same subroutines such as going forwards backwards left and right

ah I see. Not much memory, I imagine, then. I don't have any experience with BASIC, so don't know what kind of overhead/footprint it requires.

on picaxe yu get like 4000 lines of basic or something

6:32 PM
What kind of sensors? bump sensors? infra-red? ambient?

sharp IR sensors :)

Nice.

yeah were expensive but worth the money as they are easy to interface with the PICs ADC :) just plug the output straight in to the ADC :) compared to just using a infrared LED and Phototransistor and a op-amp to make the change enough to get easier readings for the ADC to read

Yes, definitely worth paying for a packaged deal when the point isn't to fiddle with analog electronics or production.
Few student groups seem to understand this concept when I pitch the idea of using simple dev kits, like the Arduino or eZ430...

ive just got so many design flaws with the project :( but in my coursework i've got loads to talk about in my recommendations :D

6:38 PM
Awesome! To tell you the truth I never really cared much whether or not my school projects ever worked, so long as I had lots of interesting problems and solutions to talk about!
Most of the judging professors and techs agreed ;)

yeah my teacher was shocked when i showed him my circuit diagram all it had was a pic ULN2803a and my sensors

hehehe

he was like wheres there the unessential rubbish yu usually stick in like a serial port

hope the dropkick you received wasn't permanently damaging :D
... oh, thought you meant you forgot about power supply, signal conditioning, LED indicators, etc.
though I guess you don't need signal conditioning with Sharp IR's

naa i said thats just going to be a 7805 to regulate the 5v for the pic which input will be ~14.4V from the 12 AAA batteries required for the stepper motors

6:43 PM
Ah cool.

although i don't think it will work on battery power because the stepper motors are rated at 11.4V and theres no current limiting and when i overvolted them last time i blew the ULN2803a

blew all 8 pairs at once?
(8 drives in one chip, I think?)

yeah
no only 2

Wicked.

which was annoying cus it took me ages to work out why the motors wouldn't rotate all the way around and kept skipping pulses
hmmm i think ive fixed the bug :L it was checking the left sensor then wanting to carry on forward instead of turning left

6:50 PM
I recommend not including that detail in your report.

:L why not its a development ;)
im racing my slow mouse at the beginning of april :/ its not going to be ready
well it is it just won't get passed the heats :/

race through a maze?

yep

what kind of penalties would you get if you just went through all of the walls, and won by a mile?
I'm thinking robot-wars-style development.

hmmm idk i will ask the guy that writes the rules :L

6:55 PM
Maybe just go for big fat tires, oxy-acetylene torches, and a speaker system attached to an iPod.
automatic A+.

but i got my school to pay for me to go to the competition :D and it will look amazing in my report to say here it is in a competition but it lost as DC motors with encoders are the way forward ;) but expensive to implement ;)

pretty sure torches, tunes and tires are the way forward, but oh well.

lol pimp it out?
hmm i wonder
there are no penalties for hitting the wall

... solution: claim you made nanobots that must be in ionized solution to function as a group, then pour a big bucket of water at the entrance of the maze and declare victory as the wave finds the end.

lol
i have been tempted with having a mechanical engine such as one from a petrol R/C car ;)
hit 60 mph on the straights :D

GRRRR why doesn't it just return to the main :@
it goes to the next subroutine :@

using interrupts?

noo
can only do interrupts on digital signals
which i have non

Can you check things like the stack (does BASIC use a stack?) while debugging?

yeah

7:24 PM
ah good. You'll get it, then.

yeah there is a stupid limit that yur only allowed 8 nested gosubs :/

Well.. that's quite a few..

yes
ive now rewritten it to fix that bug
GRR i hate my macbook keyboard

How come?
The letter "B" on mine broke off at some point, so it's kind of a flapper-key, now, but still works well.

cus its rubbish
BTW get the front to chip and apple will replace it free of charge ;)
like that ^
ive had 3 new keyboards for mine in the past year
and mine hasn't had a warrenty in over 2 years :)

7:41 PM
Mine is chipped almost all the way around hehe.. over 5 years old, though.

so its a design flaw with them

@tyblu How do you transfer charge with chargeless photons?

@NickT photons excite valence electrons (are absorbed) with enough energy to hit conduction band.

@NickT i thought protons had a positive charge

photons, @Dean, not protons ;)

7:43 PM
i just realised

How is that transferring any charge?
that's just energy

Well, no net charge transfer, but creates electron-hole pair.
Should include that I guess.

soooo
win tag
and of course to go with
kill them all?

Awesome.

I feel like retagging 20+ questions so the front page is all me

7:48 PM
Well.. I can see how I'd use them responsibly... are they used appropriately? Guessing no.

How would you legitimately use them
The proper tag would be whatever has the input or output in question
can't have a disembodied I/O :P

maybe when designing amplifier output stages, or sensor input stages, independently.
Nah, still crap.
kill.

8:05 PM
how about some tag for user-interface stuff?

Q: How to implement a "rotary switch" like in audio equipment?
