@NickT yeah, that was pretty good, but I enjoyed others more.

Watch Enterprise?
going through that now; not sure what I think of it

yeah. Very different feel to it, but I still liked it.

What genre is that?

The thing that bothers me is how it goes back and forth between idealism and cynicism so easily and without any apparently justification
@Wallacoloo Star Trek, sort of a middle of the road sci-fi

Oh, star trek enterprise. Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the series.

i can't believe i got 10 votes for saying what a pullup was.
feel like deleting it.
embarrassing, like i've taken advantage of 'the system' :P

dude, those are the only questions where you get more than like 3 upvotes
My top question (23) is about series vs. parallel essentially
Then below that (21) some fluff one about RF's effects on biology

Well, everyone has different levels of understanding in this field. It seems that the lower-level the question, the more people it will help. So to an extent the rating for that answer is somewhat valid.

Gotta go play underwater hockey! (f'ing google it)

what is that, like underwater pumpkin carving?
a few inches of water constitutes "underwater"?

@Nick T didn't you see the pictures?
on the wikipedia page that was the first result, that is

eh, just looked it up

Hey, so I'm using an op-amp here, but the circuits hooked up to input and output pins don't share a common ground. (I have a microphone as the input). How should I wire this?
I'm trying to use it as a non-inverting amplifier.

Dunno, I suck at analog, sounds like a question

Well, alright then. I'll make it a question.

only time I had to do it was to fix some old dumbass engineer's mistake that ended up having a composite video signal 2x the level it should have been
then I realized that the eng. director listened to him as though he knew everything, and that I would be stuck working for people like that forever, so I quit being an engineer

Q: Are vegetables actually good for me?

BG100From a young age, most people are told that vegetables are really good for you and you must eat them... But why? If I eat loads of vegetables for a week, and then the next week I eat nothing but burgers and fries I don't feel in the slightest bit different. Different people have different taste...

@NickT Sounds like he forgot the source and/or sink resistance

4:48 AM
no, he just was sending an amplified signal into an input he didn't terminate

Hey, seeing as how there are 2 more people in chat now, maybe someone knows the answer to my question:
I'm using an op-amp here, as a non-inverting amplifier, but the circuits hooked up to input and output pins don't share a common ground. (I have a microphone as the input). How should I wire this?
(I'm trying to use it as a non-inverting amplifier. But it's being fed into a microcontroller after this for processing, so inverting is ok if necessary.)

when you mean "don't share a ground", could you elaborate?

Did you post that question on the site yet? Sounds like someone deserves some rep for it

Well, the microphone is piezoelectric. So it produces its own voltage across 2 leads. The amplifier is being powered off of a battery. So they don't share a ground.

why can't you just ground one of the mic leads
or put it at some ref voltage

4:55 AM
Can I? I'll admit that I don't have a very good understanding in this area.
I'll try grounding a lead.

you just doing voltage amp or current amp

voltage

I think I'd tie one lead to a voltage divider, and then put the other into your opamp buffer

yeah, for single supply amp you need to have your thing biased somewhere in the middle

Yeah, just tying one lead to ground doesn't work.

5:04 AM
bias it

probably not - you'd end up clipping half your signal

Well what happens right now is that it just outputs my supply voltage.
OK, so I should have 1 lead hooked up to a voltage divider
Should that be dividing the voltage by 2?

chat is for off topic stuff; go make a question, post what you have :P

haha, alright.
I should be getting to be anyways

Q: Brainstorm on wireless buttons

interstarA question I asked on a mailing list. Thought I'd echo it here. I just want to brainstorm something I'd like to exist, and I want a reality check from people who really know about radio / electronics etc. I'm trying to find smaller, more flexible input devices for electronics projects : at firs...

Q: Brainstorming in the form of a question

reemrevnivekIs it OK to ask questions that are really just requests to brainstorm with the community? I'm referring to this question, which just came to the top of the main page. It caught my attention because it mentioned brainstorming explicitly, even in the title. However, this type of question has b...

@Daniel Grillo
I flagged this answer:

A: Should I get the PICKit 2 or 3?

me23pic kit 3 is the ish, its back with full features.

as low value because it has no meaningful content.
"is the ish" is slang (afaik) for "great" or "excellent". I know we're supposed to be nice to new users, but this is not a very good start. I think that cases this bad should be deleted, with a comment stating that the question already has 7 decent answers, and that more content is necessary for an answer to be worth keeping.
There's a point where an answer is so bad that it's unacceptable and should be deleted, and where a new user just needs some help getting answers up to standards. This one, I believe, falls on the delete side of that line.
Does anyone else know if Daniel/oengenheiro is ever in chat?

@reemrevnivek Ive seen him around on here once or twice will pop up though in his stack exchange thing though if tagged correctly.

9:23 PM
OK. I did flag the question, but Dan responded by commenting "Could you explain better?".
By the way, have you noticed the sweet new MathJax support? I was going to create a sandbox for it, but it doesn't seem to be enabled on Meta.
I think I'm going to just create it on the main site, and if it gets closed, it gets closed.

@reemrevnivek MathJax?

Yeah, it's a Javascript LaTeX engine that gives us beautiful mathematical equations. I'll post that sandbox/formatting question on the site shortly with links to documentation etc.

ok cool

@reemrevnivek Hi, I've received in my inbox that someone send me a message here.
Normally when I come here, there isn't nobody.

Hi! That's funny, I haven't seen you around much. Anyways, I was a little confused by how you handled that answer on the PICKit 3. I don't want to nit-pick, you've got the diamond by your name, but I was curious if you saw something in the user or answer that I didn't, or knew of a policy that I'm unaware of. Or, maybe you were feeling particularly generous.

@reemrevnivek Yes, I'm trying to be generous.

No complaints there!
BTW, please be generous and let this question hang out for a while:

Q: Test the new TeX markdown in this Sandbox question

reemrevnivekPurpose of question We now have $\LaTeX$ support through MathJax. Now, instead of writing equations like this: w0 = 1 / sqrt(L * C) we can write: $\omega_0 = \frac{1}{\sqrt{LC}}$ Hooray! However, TeX has a steep learning curve, and it will take some time to figure out how to use this fe...

Interesting, it doesn't seem to be enabled in chat.
$\LaTeX$
Guess not.

I'm not so fluent in english

That's fine! Is there something you didn't understand?

10:18 PM
I didn't understand the "ish" slang
So I just put a comment in the answer. I was just waiting for another moderator or the community act in that answer.

I didn't either, and I'm a 22-year-old American kid. Had to do some googling. I think it's derived from "is the s**t", which has the same meaning, though I don't understand that one either.

@reemrevnivek my understanding of it was hmmm its ok could be better

@reemrevnivek Funny
Maybe that question should be protected

Maybe. It does seem to have generated a lot of "Me too" answers.
Would that prevent the user from improving the post that you commented on?

I don't know.

10:27 PM
hmm.
I think I'm going to wait to post a "We need LaTeX in meta so the sandbox can move there" bug for a day or two so that users will see that question.

@reemrevnivek For me it's ok.
I'll be generous :-)

@Dan - Can you make the sandbox question (electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/11172/…) Community Wiki? Thanks!

Ok. Done

Well, I have to head home. Hot date tonight!
Until tomorrow,

Until tomorrow
Good to chat with you

@reemrevnivek Nice
