@AdamL yeah, that's called a "PWM" charge controller, although you'll need to supply closer to 14VDC to get a "12V" lead-acid monobloc to charge
(measure a car "12V" when the engine is idling sometime)
it can work, it's just not as efficient at extracting power out of the solar panels as a Maximum Power Point Tracking controller is
