@NickAlexeev At least a couple years ago you could still get them from Lattice. But yes, price per gate relative to CPLDs or FPGAs was astronomically higher.
OK, 10 years ago.

Aside from TI, Maxim, & Analog, who are good vendors for current sense amplifiers (I'm looking for 4 channels, digital output, small packages)

Anybody ever have the dumb idea to use a uC's SPI peripheral to implement a crude PWM output?

I am making my own laser diode and crystal or glass compound. Does anyone know what formula calculates the very very maximum voltage and amperage a laser diode can handle before breakdown occurs?

@ScientistSmithYT There's no useful and precise formula. The main failure modes are thermal, so you'll need to design your laser, figure out what the thermal hot spots are, and (most likely) empirically work out how hard you can pump the laser before it blows up.
But designing a laser diode is not something you're likely to have good results with without a few million bucks worth of equipment.

Check out YAG lasers. Pretty exotic but more feasible than chemically doping silicon at home.

@ThePhoton Well the good news is that I got a couple grants that gives me enough money to get equipment. I also thought there wouldn't be a formula for such a thing. Because it's mainly based on experience passed down. But I didn't think it would hurt to ask just to make sure.
@rdtsc YAG lasers are nice, but mine is bigger and more powerful. Which also brings a problem. If it goes wrong, a lot of electricity will go boom. I'm going to be using almost all of the power available in my shop. Well it's no longer a shop, it's a wearhouse sized building.

@ScientistSmithYT Are you building a laser diode (a semiconductor chip that acts as a laser) or a diode laser (a laser that uses a semiconductor chip as the gain element)?

@rdtsc The concrete in my building was probably one of the most expensive things put in. The concrete is 4.5 feet thick then pasted with a protective layer on the top.
@ThePhoton A laser diode.
@ThePhoton I'm making the diode itself then making the energy reducer crystal or glass cube.
@ThePhoton If there's ever a need for an enormous generator this is it.
@ThePhoton It's a custom laser in itself.
