As far as I can tell, a lot of low-cost optical rotary encoders are made using two slot detectors (or a dual slot detector) and an interrupter wheel. The interrupter wheel is either solid IR-blocking plastic with holes, or printed on a disk of something like mylar

@W5VO Good old days there were mylar encoders with a shape printed such that each "bit" output 8 levels of current. You could detect on/off, or 8 levels of on

I'll look into it. Although, I guess I should first figure out why that encoder is needed with the stepper motor...

@The Photon Yeah, I got the same thing but in the other direction, "oh you use an 0603? Well we don't have any of those left, how about a 1210?" Do these guys ever look at what they sell?

i'm reading a datasheet and it has a pin labeled G with a bar overtop of the G.
what does that mean?
my first thought was "not-ground", but that really doesn't make any sense, so.

On the other hand, in the diagram on page 3, they label those pins as "Data Enable".
