@user554252 Don't double post in Physics and EE

@ThePhoton If that's a SE policy, it's a terrible one. But from what I read here, it doesn't seem like an official policy.

user347677
The Physics site gave a different point of view (focusing on the why part), while the EE site gave a different one (focusing on the what happens part), in their answers.

user347677
No offense, but this answer is nonsense. "99.99% of questions people have claimed as being cross site has been proven to be valid on a single site if written properly and thought through." Would you care to supply any justification for this? Proven by who? You have a link to a research study? I could make wide-ranging unsupported assertions too, but that doesn't make them true. I think it entirely reasonable to have a question that resides on one site be visible on multiple sites. That way questions of interest benefit from cross-pollination from other related sites. — Faheem Mitha Dec 12 '11 at 22:51

user347677
I found this Q&A searching for an answer. Here's my case in point: I've got a question about SFTP and permissions on Ubuntu. Where do I ask? ServerFault? Unix & Linux? Ask Ubuntu? Any and all of these are perfect places to ask, but because the network has become diluted, it's now become a big question as to WHERE to ask. How about cross-posting, but the Q&A's are linked to the other sites so answers for one appear on others; plus, only one source of rep. Moderators could set what sites are related and therefore permissible. The Q could suggest where to cross-post based on content. — Charles Roper Oct 5 '12 at 8:01

user347677
These are some good counter points ^

8:07 AM
Copy pasting the text to another site is often not a good idea. Reformulating it in the scope of another usually is ok. If both sites think the same text is ontopic on both sites it might be too broad

3 hours later…
user347677
10:41 AM
@PlasmaHH I don't see any need to reformulate when the question is perfectly on-topic on both sites.

user347677
And your claim that "if it is on-topic on both sites it might be too broad" is an unsubstantiated claim

user347677
I can give you tons of counter-examples if you wish

user347677
But well, I'm not sure how much time you want to invest into this line of conversation

I am not going to argue with your vast experience on this network

user347677
@PlasmaHH Sure. I have been for several years on this network.

user347677
10:46 AM
There are certain policies which I absolutely don't agree with.

Then totally ignore them, thats the spirit of a community

user347677
I am not ignoring anybody. I am trying to be reasonable and every point I'm making is substantiated.

then go on meta and propose those guidelines to be changed, surely everone will agree then

user347677
While some people here just insist on repeating some not-completely-agreed-upon policies.

user347677
Without giving any good reason at all.

user347677
10:48 AM
@PlasmaHH I have wasted several hours days on that already. Not making that mistake again.

user347677
Unfortunately not all people here are interested in taking part in reasonable debates, and I'm not willing to go down that rabbit hole.

probably because they don't like wasting time on doing the same discussion with someone with an attitude again for the gazillionth time about changing things for a (one man) minority.
If you don't agree with it, then don't take part. I also don't go into the womens bathroom just because I don't like the idea of having two seperate ones.

user347677
@PlasmaHH I assure you the situation looks exactly same from my viewpoint. If you re-read the conversation notice that the only point you are making is "there are some rules which half of the community agrees with and there's a green tick on that, and thus you should follow it"

I have been long enough on the interwebs to see communities come and go and I am too old to fight for one to stay, but that doesn't mean I can't make remarks about what the so-far agreed rules are, which is why those people gathered in that community. If then new people come in and want to use the community for something else, then people will pack their stuff and go elsewhere.
Like it seems to happen with a lot of people on the bigger SE sites. These days people asking questions think the purpose of the site is to get their question answered

user347677
@PlasmaHH A community which doesn't evolve with time is destined to fail over time. And I personally feel SE is going down that line. And don't assume that I have not been long enough on interwebs to communities come up and down. Rules like "don't cross-post even if they're on-topic on both sites" are things which makes a community unapproachable fast.

user347677
10:57 AM
I have personally noticed the quality of Math SE and Physics SE go down over time due to the stupid rules

The SE network has a certain goal, it was created with that goal in mind and people came here and built it up with that goal in mind. If you now abandon that and go for some cheap ass other goal, its a slap into the face of those that spent their effort.
And the network quality is going down specifically because people stop persuing that goal and go for the cheap

user347677
@PlasmaHH Yes. The goal was to be a repository of high quality Q&A. Stopping asking well formatted well intentioned good questions on two different sites, is one of those ways of moving away from that goal.

On the contrary, but since you have made up your mind already it seems to be pointless to argue about that

user347677
See, now you are just being defensive, without stating any "facts". Fine, I don't see any point in this argument any more.

user347677
I gave you several reasons as to why we should allow cross-posting. But you gave me only one; which I countered.

11:01 AM
It has never been an argument on the first place. If you challenge something then at least start wit "it is better because" and not "it is better, defend why the old way is"

user347677
@PlasmaHH Sure. I did start with "it is better because". Not "it is better, defend why the old way is"

user347677
You're either misinterpreting it, or haven't read my points.

user347677
Anyhow, I'll let SE evolve organically. Nothing much a single person can do.

That anyways, unless you have revolutionary great ideas
and no, I can't find any argument in what you said that tells why cross posting is better.

user347677
I'm afraid, I have nothing to do if you intentionally cherry pick my messages.

user347677
One of the problems with online communities is that they tend to be very orthodox

the first two are quotes from other people way before our conversation starts, I didn't know that you consider them part of it. And reading it again, for the first one I dont see a claim why cross posting is better. For the second I see more of an argument that we have too many linux related sites (one mentioend of which isnt even part of the SE network really). and the quote from yourself also doesnt provide me with a reason why cross posting is better.

user347677
@PlasmaHH 1) Two different sites can provide two different viewpoints to the same question. 2) Cross posting means more good quality answers 3) A question even without reformulation can be perfectly on-topic for both sites 4) It also means the question reaches a wider audience with different expertise

user347677
And your counter points are? (Other than the fact that there exists a 4 year old meta post with a green ticked answer which is against cross posting)

are we running on some kind of time limit?

user347677
@PlasmaHH See, you are again cherry picking, without countering the 4 points I gave. Anyhow, the answer is, in 4 years a lot of things have changed and a lot of new SE sites have come up with overlapping scope. So the 4 year old answer is not necessarily valid.

user347677
EE has a lot of overlap with the signal processing site for example.

okay, so not answering here fast enough is cherry picking? wtf? you have a serious problem with your demanding attitude

user347677
11:17 AM
@PlasmaHH No. That's not cherry picking. I called your attitude of neglecting my first 4 points and picking up a single word posted much later and questioning it, cherry picking. Anyhow, do you have any point, or no?

user347677
BTW "much later" is a relative term. Don't question that.

user347677
11:36 AM
Well, it seems this conversation isn't going to reach any conclusive end. Bye. Have a good day.

1:42 PM
@PlasmaHH . . What a passionate argument :) ( I meant debate)

1:58 PM
@Marla my only passion is for blowing up this planet. Or better yet universe, seems easier
and maybe strawberries

Is that how they make all those strawberries that are hollow inside ? Blow them up ?
Blow up balloons

universe sized?
btw. did you have the same problem with our generation? we demand ridiculous stuff and too much in general?

Not really. One just patronizes that behavior until it improves.

doesnt seem to be the case with todays facebook and react within seconds to text message generation. Or I am too impatient

Instant information and instant gratification certainly weren't available years ago.

2:06 PM
probably. I can still remember reading books. In fact an encyclopedia the first thing that I really read end to end that wasn't a childrens book after I learned reading.

Similar here. I remember hearing my parents saying (bragging ? ) She even reads the encyclopedia.
I don't like it how I feel compelled to immediately answer a text message.

yeah, similar here, before that they bragged about that I read the books to other children in the kindergarten

So I have a special sound for incoming text message. Then I don't read the message for a minute.

@Marla yeah, whcih is why I often totally dislike the "message has been seen" feature of messenger
I have a special ringtone for my mother...

well, it is 8 AM here, and I need to go out and do yard work. We had 70 mile per hour wind here 2 days ago. Time to clean up

2:12 PM
We had sun for the last few days and I did lots of work in the garden and got a sunburn :/

2 hours later…
3:42 PM
@Marla I never instant-answer
I regularly have 12 messages waiting before I even actually look what the content is

3 hours later…
6:42 PM
@Marla @PlasmaHH The internet was pretty great until all the stupid people (those who don't know how to configure an IP address) got on it, if only we could go back.
@user554252 crossposting is bad, not only on SE but on other sites as well, it confuses the internet don't do it.

7:04 PM
@laptop2d I have ever since said that we need a driver's licence for the internet. Unfortunately we would only have 2% of the features then

7:24 PM
@laptop2d Don't mind me...I totally know how to configure an IP address...*walks away*

7:55 PM
@PlasmaHH Don't worry, I'm sure all porn stars will get a provisional Upload License

2 hours later…
9:47 PM
I really hate that these days you basically cant get schematics for anything :/
