@Zeta.Investigator my 9v has what, 400mAh capacity? 900? My AA has over 2000

3 hours later…
10:35 AM
@NickAlexeev common sense should say so...

11:14 AM
@NickAlexeev wouldnt the phrase be "he isn't russian"

12:08 PM
@NickAlexeev Я вас не понял.

12:24 PM
who thought its a good idea to dump three times the rated power into a resistor of a frequency divider for some speakers...

@PlasmaHH Same person who thought speaker frequency division was best done with resistors?

@Asmyldof there are caps and inductors too... it is filtering out a lot below I think 100Hz or so, and that energy is dissipated in a 4W resistor...
just a tiny bit bad when you have 50Hz hum, that gets filtered out and you wonder why everything is so quiet then you turn up the volume, hear a bit hum but the music is ok-ish and then molten solder drops out of it...

@PlasmaHH Oh, it's the matching/dump resistor you mean?
Well, in that case, it's just that almost all people are morons

yeah whatever it is called...
I mean, its used everywhere of course, but usually I see it rated properly or things layed out in a way that it doesn't have to absorb too much

Morons is what they're called. Just told you.

12:32 PM
I wonder how they rate their stuff. I did a few a long time ago. with calculations, not simulations, but I took the energy at the frequency that it was filtering out and rated it for as if the full X watts that the system was rated for were in that frequncy...
they probably use some distribution "oh its music, nobody will ever have a dominant 100Hz tone in there"

Hm, never noticed that google has stakcexchange special features for search results

@PlasmaHH Like what ?

@Marla all the search result links now have some kind of cards, "answer x of y" or "best answer" and you can left/right scroll through the answers

@PlasmaHH as a stack exchange search ? or searching in the main title bar ?

@Marla just on google.TLD

3:01 PM
Pallet of stuff!

watch out, drool is slippery

@PlasmaHH Only had time to test the top device I found. Agilent 66311B as it happened
Easy enough to set it to 230V, but seems I'll have to read the calibration chapter too
Guess last week of the year I'm going to be designing a USB-GPIB system that is actually cheap
Ribbon cables probably, or similar
"Crimp your own loom" rather than "buy $130/pc stackable cables"
But, soon... There will be CMU200's coming up from the stack too....

3:35 PM
I am currently installing a cabinet at work to place raspberry pis and hardware stuff in.
I want to, from my workbench about 2-3 meters away, access a breakout of the pins for 5-10 differen Pi:s. (RPi mounted in UniPi extension thing).

Any suggestion for wiring this? I was thinking of running network cable and mount screw terminals on the workbench but was also thinking that I am missing an obvious ready made product..

4 hours later…
8:02 PM
Ribbon cable?
You can make your own IDC cables without too much effort

8:29 PM
pro tip: when you decide to redo your component drawers labelling, don't rip them off, get distracted, forget where you put the file and start all over again

@Kortuk Если все в могут достаточно выпить, то нужны ли слова, чтобы описать тех кто не может?..

2 hours later…
10:45 PM
what is a good method to remove a few mm of insulation in the middle of a cable? probably a mm or a bit more in diameter... using a knife is a bit... difficutl

@PlasmaHH properly sized wire stripper to cut both ends of the part you want to remove.
Then careful work with a knife.

@ThePhoton for me and my steady hands...

@PlasmaHH Teach your kids to do it. There aren't that many carcinogens in the wire insulation.
Or give up coffee.

don't use coffee....
<- has trembling hands. except when using a gun ^^

@PlasmaHH Okay, have a beer before you start.
Or hold a gun while stripping your wire.

11:00 PM
@W5VO That's exactly what I'm saying. And then look up what a GPIB cable costs and you'll probably get all of that message

@ThePhoton not very liberal gun laws here

@PlasmaHH You have one of those desktop hot air things from China yet?

@Asmyldof 858d?

@PlasmaHH Whichever

yeah, got one

11:05 PM
Wrap the wire in alufoil strips on either side of where you want to do surgery
Make the opening between them a tiny bit smaller
make the strips wide enough
Set the hot air to well above melting temperature, but not smoking levels
soften the plastig and use the blunt side of a scalpel to scrape it off.
PVC about 175°C should do
Or in stead of the scalpel something similar
's how "we" used to do very thick cables, just a few scales up in tooling

hm, that sounds much less error prone... will try tomorrow when the wife is not in the room (complains about smells a lot)

Do a few trials if you can on something similar. Getting thermal, timing and alu-foil right might cost a try or so

k
