Q: Is there any historical basis for King Suro being illustrated with a branching crown?

Johan88King Suro of Gaya is often depicted with a multi branching crown, but I can find no factual, historical reason for this. The crown his Queen Heo is depicted with is historically accurate, but the other Gaya crown found (presumably for the King) had an antler design, not a branching design.

Q: What evidence is there for a six-month rainstorm in 1345 Italy?

gktscrkWhat evidence is there for a six-month rainstorm in 1345 Italy? Bill Bryson's 'Neither Here, Nor There', a travel book about Europe, says: ... imagine what it must have been to be an Italian in the fourteenth century. For a start, in 1345 it rained non-stop for six months... This sounded like a...

Q: Evolution of russian history

GregoryI've seen that Russia is a very large country in the area and has two fronts from the Western part to the Asian countries. The only thing bothering me is how this country became so large from the beginning not even before World War 1. How did Russia become such a large country because I never hea...

@T.E.D. Hi! Can I create a tag for "operating-systems" for couple of questions I asked here?

Q: Which operating system were the hackers at the MIT AI Lab using in 1971?

PandyaFrom the interview of Richard M. Stallman, I learned that when Richard Stallman joined the Artificial Intelligence Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, the community of programmers (or say hackers) at AI Lab used to run a free operating system probably developed by themselves. N...

Q: When was the term Multics (operating system) coined and by whom?

PandyaFrom the history of Multics, I found that Project MAC was established on July 1, 1963 by MIT for the development of Multics operating system and later GE (General Electric) and AT&T's Bell Labs joined the project in Aug and Nov. 1964 respectively. The history of Multics is interesting because the...

@Pandya Ask that on meta. My own inclination is that we don't get that many computing questions (in part due to the existence of the retrocomputing.SE no doubt), so it would make more sense to dial it back a notch and using something like Computers.
Note that I'm a professional Software Engineer with a MSCS, and my two main interests are Compilers and Operating Systems. So its not that I'm dismissive of such questions. I just don't think we are objectively going to get enough of them to create separate "Compilers" and "Operating Systems" tags to categorize them all.

Q: Did a fallen-out red signal lens ever cause a railway accident?

QuuxplusoneThe Straight Dope (Cecil Adams, 1986) writes: When the first primitive railroad signaling devices were developed in the 1830s and 1840s, red meant “stop,” green meant “caution,” and clear (i.e., white) meant “go.” This system had several defects. One obvious problem was the fact that the white s...

Q: Were there actually slaves in Georgia while slavery was banned there?

Colin McLartyWikipedia reports that "The Georgia Experiment (from 1735 to 17510) was the colonial-era policy prohibiting the ownership of slaves in the Georgia Colony," and that this was done in order to "minimize the slave presence in Georgia." So, did they "prohibit" slavery in Georgia during that time, or ...
