12:00 AM
Oh neat. I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
What's your email? Your linked website isn't loading for me.

12:20 AM
my nick at gmail
and my site isn't loading... what a shame, the site of a support engineer does not load.
gotta fix that tomorrow
it is just a blank page anyway... I should fix that too

12:43 AM
heh ok

12:55 AM
Wow. Who knew the username string could have a performance impact?
(Obviously an alignment and memory layout thing, but still)

11 hours later…
11:39 AM
It's impossible for a novice to give a padlock a positive review.
Think about it: A novice has no idea what makes a good padlock.
Sure, they can give a negative review if their shit gets stolen, but they can't for sure give a positive review, because they can't know if it ever stopped someone from breaking in.
For example, I am 99% confident the padlock in front of my cellar door never stopped anyone from entering my cellar, because nobody ever attempted it. I might as well not have one.

12:03 PM
What a fucking load of BS. Basically, anything is an unfinished receiver now.
Go to fucking home depot, buy a 0.7 inch pipe and oh, you just bought an unfinished receiver to a slamfire 20ga shotgun

@MechMK1 The main point of a lock is to tell people they can't just walk in :D
Even if you arn't LPL, I'm pretty sure with the right tools, you can break into most places in 5-10 minutes

@JourneymanGeek So what if they stand in my cellar. Oh no, they're stealing the empty box of my Warhammer 40k Starter Set!

THE HORROR

Yeah, whatever am I going to do?!
My landlord said I need to lock my cellar for insurance purposes
But if someone breaks the lock using bolt cutters and then takes the pieces with him, the insurance could just claim it was never locked to begin with

@MechMK1 But why would anyone take the pieces with them? Why wouldn't they leave the pieces, wait for you to get the insurance money, and then come back and rob you again?

12:13 PM
@nobody :D
Like Amazon selling you shitty locks
They want your stuff to get stolen so you buy new stuff on Amazon

Hahaha
I never thought of it like that.
Let's start a class action

The thing is, when Amazon labels something as "Amazon's Choice", that's not really a promise or guarantee
It's just a thing they chose by arbitrary metrics. It is you, the customer, who wrongly assumed that that label must mean it's good
I am fairly confident "Amazon's Choice" is just whichever product they have a high profit margin on and have a lot of in stock

Well, if you think about it, that's what it is supposed to mean, no? If amazon gets to choose what I buy, they'll tell me to choose what gives them the most profit.
It's just natural
They didn't say its the consumer's choice after all

Indeed - but it sounds like it's the best choice for you

Yeah, it's marketing - the art of lying legally
@JourneymanGeek Why hasn't the homepage alignment issue been status-reviewed yet? It's starting to annoy me really bad

12:22 PM
@nobody "I'm working in marketing" means "I'm a professional liar"

@nobody which one? 😂

@MechMK1 Well... the main part of marketing is to make people buy what they do not want to buy
At a price they cannot afford

@A.Hersean Makes me wonder why I still have money then

Because marketing people have not a 100% success rate.
Or you are not among "people".

12:46 PM

Q: Alignment issue in the "Top Questions" page

ArulkumarIn the Top Questions page (homepage), the asked/modified X mins ago text was left-aligned next to the tags. Previously the text was right-aligned. Seems some alignment issue introduced on that page recently. Screenshot for reference: Configuration Version Operating System Windows 10 Pro ...

Done. Flagging also works

1:06 PM
@MechMK1 so you're saying you don't work in marketing, right?
my website is up... valid html5 and everything. well, it have no much margin for not being htm5-compliant in 29 lines...

@ThoriumBR I give too little fucks to work in marketing

and with 4 links, could even be a txt with the links...

> Buy this shit. Or don't. I don't give a fuck.

hahaha... that's why I am not in sales:
> "So you recommend your product?"
> "No, the competitor is better"

true story...

"Do you recommend this product?"
"Sir, it's a USB-C to USB-C cable. It works just as well as any other."
"So should I get the other one?"
"Get whichever one you want."
"So...this one?"
"Whatever."

1:16 PM
I was going to be "promoted" to pre-sales but I told the client that our solution was slower and more expensive than the solution they already had

Did you keep the job?

so instead I was demoted to work with consoles, error messages, troubleshooting and solution design... and I am sincerely thankful for that meeting

Customer asked me once if they needed to pentest their internal cantina plan web app
It's literally a static HTML page updated on friday for the coming week

later that year the company's president on our country sent me a mail thanking for managing a critical migration for the same client

Not even a CMS or such - literally just a single static page

1:20 PM
@MechMK1 it depends on how the page was created... you could ask them to name a sandwich "<script src='whatever.io/xss.js'></script>" and see what happens

Yeah, it's the chefs new creation

Freenode gone, nazis to blame :D

"users are angry we are taking over some channels... what do we do?"
"we take over the entire server!"

This is what I don't get
Shutting down communities won't make these people stop thinking like they do, or trying to communicate with others. They'll just migrate elsewhere.
Look at how 4chan handles it: They set up "containment boards" like /mlp/ and say all that content goes there. If you want it, go get it.
Literally all they had to do was let the far-right post hitler memes on their own little pages and that's it

basically "freenode" is a good name, so they got it, wiped the community, and it's that

it's a good name?
> 01:20][Freenode] [keitwo(~kei@freenode/staff/kei)] [Global Notice 1/3] We are moving past legacy
freenode to a new fork. The new freenode is launched. You will slowly be disconnected and when
you reconnect, you will be on the new freenode. We patiently await to welcome you in freedom's
holdout - the freenode.
[01:20][Freenode] [keitwo(~kei@freenode/staff/kei)] [Global Notice 2/3] If you're looking to connect
now, you can already /server chat.freenode.net 6697 (ssl) or 6667 (plaintext). It's a new
yup,m from my logs lol

Huh, they seriously think people will come back?

@nobody they don't
or they would backup the usernames

Then why bother with running the server?

1:31 PM
they want a new IRC network from scratch

Smoothbrain.

Hahahaha, if IRC was something still popular, I could have understood it. But you piss off all the people who use IRC and then imagine new users will come out of nowhere?

"we are killing irc so we can start a gopher server"
or a bbs

Who the fuck still uses irc?
I know some open source software has IRC channels
But I've never seen anyone active there

@MechMK1 This guy

1:40 PM
Good for him
Everyone else moved to the pedo platform Discord
Ah fuck, how did strikethrough work again?

like this

I feel so bad for Discord
Imagine starting out like "Let's make an easily accessible VoIP and chat client that people can use to host communities on"
And it just ends up being known as the pedophile platform
Funnily, they immediately tackled the "problem" of having some right-wing memelords there, but completely shut their eyes to the pedo problem
Reddit even hired a pedophile admin :D

2:10 PM
TIL that Discord has a pedo problem

me too
my issue with discord is the staggering amount of spamming
so I haven't opened it in 3 years already

2:25 PM
Oh, you didn't know? It's really getting out of hand

@MechMK1 "Build it and they will come' is a terrible idea :D

YouTube has the same problem
It's the original reason for the adpocalypse
Big advertisers told YouTube "Look, there are videos of 11 year olds out there, who are mostly watched by men in their 30s, who write comments about how sexy they look and that they should contact them. And we don't want ads for our products on these videos. Please, fix your pedophile problem"

On the other hand - I know a lot of folks think moderation/curation = censorship

TIL that YouTube had a pedo problem

@JourneymanGeek I think there is a stark contrast between removing a video of a guy who says there are only two genders, and banning a user who wrote under the video of a child that she looks really sexy and should add him on WhatsApp
@A.Hersean Yeah, YouTube kinda swept the reason for their "advertisement policy changes" under the rug

2:30 PM
@MechMK1 I would consider both inappropriate but...

They acted like the problem was "violent content" (i.e. videogames with guns), cursing, etc...

Part of the thing is, you can't, to use a SE specific term... "pander to twitter"

@JourneymanGeek You may say one is a political view, regardless on whether or not you agree with it

@MechMK1 There's a local... uh... troublemaker who feels pedophilia should be allowed, and its a political view....

I believe as a platform, YouTube should aim to be as neutral as possible
@JourneymanGeek And as much as I hate to say it, he should be allowed to advocate for that

2:31 PM
But its less about having a 'view' than having a clear deineation of what's ok

But "advocating for the fact that pedophilia should be allowed" and "grooming little kids" are two different things

(IIRC he went to the US... they might have deported him)
So its ok to support it but not do it?

Yes, because one is a political argument, and one is child endangerment
It is okay to say people should be allowed to own machineguns. It is not okay to build one illegally because I believe it should be okay.
Freedom of Speech applies to everyone, horrible people included
So if someone makes a 10 minute video in which they explain their views, I believe that should be permissible - regardless on how abhorrent you may find those views. But it doesn't give people permission to endanger others.

heh
this is a slippery slope no matter where you stand

The reason why I believe that is because censoring one "extreme" opinion now makes another opinion the "most extreme" opinion out there - ready to be censored.
The thing is, I don't trust big tech corporations or the government to be "moderate" when it comes to censorship.

2:36 PM
Annnnnnnd there's the issue

Hm?
The thing is, neither corporations nor the government are neutral. Corps are owned by people who have a lot of money on the table - so they will naturally advocate for views and ideologies that benefit them.
And I mean, we have plenty of historical examples as well as to why government censorship is a bad idea

youtube will never be neutral, they have google behind

They can be if they're forced
Basically, if the US gov't wanted them to be neutral, they can force them to be

a real true neutral platform only works if nobody owns the platform, like a p2p platform

"Stop censoring people, or you will lose your status as a platform and be considered a publisher"
Because that status is literally the only reason YouTube can exist
Why does Virtualbox die when I start Burp?

2:55 PM
On the other hand, if they don't moderate/censor/judge/[insert your synonym here], the judicial system will have to do it, and to be honest it is too big a job for an institution to do it, it's even too big for humans too do it. So algorithms/machines/AIs/[insert your synonym here] do it in 1st instance, then private companies's moderators do it (before depression hits them and they retire 1 or 2 years later).
It's very imperfect, but it's the best compromise that what found for now

3:23 PM
@A.Hersean the whole model of the sweatshop content moderator is flawed IMO

3:36 PM
The problem is there is too much content
And nobody can realistically fix that

3:49 PM
yep, the content creation rate is absurd... even the flagged content rate is absurd

The problem for larger content creators (I'm talking 1M+ subs) is that even they can't contact a human at YouTube
According to an unverified number, in 2020, there were 22,000 YouTube channels out there with 1M+ subscribers
So I think it's not too unreasonable to give those people support

4:34 PM
who got vaccinated here?

I still haven't... our vaccine production output isn't enough
so there's still 3-4 months until I get the chance to get the first shot

I'm scared of vaccines, but I'm also scared of covid, so I think it's time for me to get vaccinated... if only it was possible (no places available at the moment on the website)

Not me. I might get vaccinated in the future though
I'm not really sure about long-term effects

I work in a high risk environment so I was ahead of the line.

4:42 PM
Yeah, that makes sense

I got vaccinated 'cause everybody else in my family got vaccinated and just in case restaurants or airlines started requiring it
Since I work at home I'm actually extremely low risk. It would take some effort to get covid if I wanted to.

They can't require it here - but they have to request proof that either 1.) you are vaccinated, 2.) you have been tested negatively in the last 48 hours or 3.) you have recovered from COVID within a specific timeframe
@FireQuacker Ironically, this is why I am not getting vaccinated
My only social contact is my mother, pretty much. God, I'm so lonely.

After you get vaccinated, you're allowed to actually go outside and be around people, right?

I can already go outside and be around people
My problem is, my other regular social contacts were my co-workers
And our local office is so small (~6 people) that my employer doesn't want to go through the process

Can you work from Starbucks?

4:46 PM
Because you know, you need to provide masks and disinfectant
Ehhh, shouldersurfing and such

Wear a hoodie and you'll be fine

Besides, you can't sit down without one of the three things mentioned above
Besides, social contact is actually talking to people, not just them being there
Which is why I don't count going to the grocery store as social event

@MechMK1 Wait... which part of your body spreads covid?

All of it

I sure thought it was mostly breathing. I never considered that my pants should be disinfected.

4:49 PM
Your mere presence within 2 meters kills people

Well, it's summer. Can you like have a meeting in a park?

Talking about vaccination, a relative of mine got vaccinated and tried that magnet thing. It actually worked. Now, I'm not ready to believe he was implanted with a microchip (are they even magnetic?) so I'm wondering, what in the world makes that happen?

"that magnet thing"?

@FireQuacker Magnets stick to the place vaccine was injected

lol
I had none of the cool stuff...
I don't even get 5G!

4:55 PM
@nobody did you actually see it with your eyes, or did they told you so? Because lately there's too many people who like to do pranks, it seems

Which vaccine? Was it actually magnetic or was it sticking due to sweat/blood?

@reed Video, but I'm sure it wasn't a prank

Are they still magnetic there?

@FireQuacker Pfizer I think. Sweat/blood I can't check
@FireQuacker Dunno, I'll ask

I got the second Pfizer a few weeks ago. Just checked and a refrigerator magnet did not work.
And I'm glad no one was watching

4:59 PM
it's a prank bro
I will only believe it if I feel the magnet being attracted by the skin, or vice versa

Or people are stupid

@JourneymanGeek I don't know what you refer to, but I agree

however I'm not going to try it because I'm afraid it will interfere with the vaccine, LOL. Maybe it has metallic parts, I don't know, I don't feel like trying to put a magnet there

@reed it dosen't

Imagine they inject a chip under your skin for real, and with a magnet you end up damaging it. Imagine then how embarrassing when all of a sudden the whole world starts behaving like robots commanded by Bill Gates, and you are the only one who is still conscious because the chip is damaged

5:03 PM
When they all blue screen, you'll be the one who has to deal with it...

> When you just got the vaccine and feel the strong need to activate Windows 10

"To activate Windows 10, please keep your shoulder next to your PC and wait"

You mean Bill Gates finally solved all our password issues?

Troubleshooting: in the list of WIFI networks I can see "left shoulder" but I was vaccinated in the right one.

I'm not entirely sure that would be a bad thing...

5:18 PM
Don't give 'em ideas

Passwordless Fundamental Interface, PFI, which is installed by PFIzer

5:32 PM
@reed Well, that's what they said, they could feel the magnet being attracted, but it was on the same day they were vaccinated
Anyone know if hemoglobin is magnetic?

I don't think so...
I was watching "Because science" channel on youtube and the guy said that Magneto magnetic field would have to be so huge to lift the security guard on xmen 1 that it would basically be a magnetar

From a quick google search, it looks like it is

it can be, but the amount of iron on it is so small that you would need a very strong magnet to do anything

In which case, it is probably just a blood clot where the needle was inserted
@ThoriumBR Hmm... then my theory would be wrong :(

I saw people "proving" that vaccines are magnetic by sticking a aluminum spoon to the arm

5:45 PM
Hahaha

press a coin to your arm, any coin, and it will stick for a while. or the forehead, whatever...
it means nothing

6:04 PM
what can magnets damage? HDDs I guess, for sure. Not sure about other hardware though. Or even CDs/DVDs

a common magnet? floppy disks, magtripe on credit cards, and it's that
to damage a hdd, you need a rare earth one, it's not "stick a fridge magnet to the hdd case and it dies" kind of thing

I checked out the page about magnets on Wikipedia, and it's "semi-protected until 2024 due to vandalism", LOL

people use to troll the Mormons about that

1 hour later…
7:34 PM
It's the last day @JsupportsPalestine will be pingable here
I have a feeling J still reads the chat without signing in :)

7:46 PM
Farewell, @JsupportsPalestine! Have fun and use strong passwords

8:15 PM
Hey, wait. @JsupportsPalestine. Since you don't need it any more, can we get the password for your account, in case someone wants to do some trolling? ;)

8:51 PM
@nobody If you can hack into it, you can keep it

9:18 PM
@MechMK1 IRC is still extremely possible for FOSS.
@JourneymanGeek Pedophilia itself is a mental disorder. It is neither allowed nor disallowed. It just is. The problem is when people act on those desires and harm others.

9:32 PM
something like kleptomania (whatever it's written)?
you have the desire to steal things, it's not a crime... you do steal things and it is?

Yeah.
The same is true with pedophiles. They have a mental disorder which causes them to be attracted to children. That on its own is fine (if unfortunate), but it becomes a serious problem when some of them act out on it because their desires overpower their self-restraint.
And unlike other mental conditions like sexual sadism, it's not possible to find willing participants.

I can imagine why
