@RoryAlsop This.

Anonymous
my typing is schizo though

Anonymous
i will say]#

@RoryAlsop I'm pretty sure the romans did use short hand too :D

Can I go for a quick declinist tangent, related to cyberpunk?

(that was a joke I couldn't stop myself making and that I do not assume)

1:01 PM
Have a look at this article: hypebeast.com/2019/10/…

Anonymous
@MechMK1 does it involve booba?

Anonymous
if no, im not interested

Anonymous
sorry.

Ignoring messages that are solely an emoji or a list of letters and characters (such as "pick up l8r from train?") is very easy for me :-)

@RoryAlsop My problem is that I type at 36 WPM (alright guys, please don't make fun of me), so I have to optimize
@RoryAlsop But no, that sort of shorthand makes me scream

Anonymous
1:02 PM
@RoryAlsop Don't you mean: "pck up l8r frm train"

Anonymous
:D

Anonymous
who the fuck uses "pick" anymore

Anonymous
or "from"

:D

Anonymous
thats too much effort...

1:02 PM
pck ^ l8r trn k?

Anonymous
^ lul

pck p l8r frm trn

@nobody to be fair, I know folks half my age can use all these shortenings very effectively, but my brain is set in stone (probably precambrian schist these days) and I just find it so difficult and time consuming to understand. Also, I can still type rather fast
@djsmiley2kStaysInside that "k" looks like the sort of thing they would use

@RoryAlsop pk ⬆ later 4m 🚂 plox

pck ^ l8r 🚂
damnit @JourneymanGeek

1:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek hahahahaha - I haven't seen plox from them

Anonymous
You only get the benefits of typing fast for around 10 years, then you get what happened to me where my RSI is getting worse and worse and my WPM is going down and down.

and I wouldn't know that was a train unless I got really close to the screen

The reason this worries me is because I feel like people wishing for more "human-like phones" is because we literally care more about our phones than fellow human beings.

"Would thee kindly assist in collecting me from the locomotive dear father?"

1:03 PM
@Jis12yearsold. I'm actually still slowly increasing speed.

Anonymous
@MechMK1 True...

LOOK WEST ON THE 3RD DAY!

@JourneymanGeek hahaha

Anonymous
@RoryAlsop I wish mine was. I went from 175 wpm to like 120 wpm in the last 3 years.

@JourneymanGeek In Doric, we could use "Wouldst thou..."

1:04 PM
@MechMK1 or its a wierd lynchian fetish

Anonymous
My hands can't take it no more...

@RoryAlsop My doric is rusty

@Jis12yearsold. playing the guitar helps a lot. Rock climbing doesn't. For me, anyway

Granted I could hardly understand what my ex used to say when she switched to it for a joke

@Jis12yearsold. What do you do with 175 words every minute?

1:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek well, the weird doric/norn cross spoken in Orkney

@nobody complain?

Anonymous
@nobody Hahahahahaha.

Anonymous
There's a lot you can do with 175 WPM.

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek this...

It reminds me of this:

Anonymous
1:05 PM
Complaining especially.

> We used to love people and use tools. Now we use people and love tools.

@RoryAlsop In her case I think it was a local dialect, she lived somewhere around inverness

Anonymous
I am not physically capable of typing that fast anymore. It hurts too much.

Anonymous
It genuinely painful to type that fast now...

Anonymous
By the time I am 30 I am going to be at 60 wpm. Unless I fix my hands.

1:06 PM
I can't type fast on my laptop

Hey my brain won't be able to keep up with even 120 WPM

do you have any WPM meter?
Then I can show you how fast I am :D

Anonymous

@JourneymanGeek Oh yes, full speed Doric from Invernessshire is a thing of wonder

80 wpm

Anonymous
1:07 PM
@nobody Heh. That's actually the easiest part for me. Its dealing with the agonizing pain which is the hard part.

Anonymous
@MechMK1 Not bad.

Let me try again

Anonymous
My girlfriend has suffered the most though, more than my WPM counter anyways :)

Anonymous
coughs

95 now

1:08 PM
I got rid of my RSI \o/

Anonymous
Reminds me, need to book an appointment to see if there's anything that can actually be done. Medication, exercises, whatever.

RSI?
I'm sure I could break 100 if I tried more
I don't even type with 10 fingers

@JourneymanGeek Your child is a train driver?

Heh. I improved from 36 to 44

@A.Hersean I couldn't remember a quaint oldtimey word for train :D

Anonymous
1:11 PM
@MechMK1 Repetitive strain injury.

Anonymous
@MechMK1 Really?

@Jis12yearsold. Yes
Never learned it
I just freestyle it

Anonymous
Hahaha.

Anonymous
Fair enough.

Anonymous
If you want to improve your speed, I'd recommend learning how to use at least 8 fingers.

Anonymous
1:12 PM
But 10 is optimal

Anonymous
If I fall below 100 wpm i get frustrated...

@JourneymanGeek en.wiktionary.org/wiki/trayne#Middle_English (when orthography was not consistent) So basically, it has always been "train".

@Jis12yearsold. I can type with 8 fingers, I just can't touch type

@A.Hersean Boring
heh

sadly

1:15 PM
I type wierdly, mostly with 2 fingers and randomly using 2 more and my thumbs
but I touchtype
Not very fast though and switching keyboards after a decade on the same one is "fun"

Anonymous
@nobody Hmm, I see.

Anonymous
That is also quite a problem as far as speed goes.

I'm still around 130wpm touch typing. 10 fingers

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek Actually, a lot of people type with two fingers even though they give the appearance of typing with more.

Never learnt to type formally

Anonymous
1:17 PM
It is quite a common problem...

I would get a Das Keyboard, but I like the flashy lights on this Razer too much

Anonymous
I used to have the same issue, actually.

Probably shoulda used mavis beacon

Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Should build a keyboard!!!

Anonymous
Its a lot of fun

1:17 PM
i type with about 6 fingers I guess

@Jis12yearsold. time vanishes

@RoryAlsop heh, just retired my decade old blackwidow :D

Anonymous
I am going to build another keyboard soon.

I send electrical impulses from my brain to my mind-world-interface extensions in the hope they interface correctly with the keyboard to produce sensical words.

Anonymous
I am waiting for this case to drop, wait.

Anonymous

@Jis12yearsold. I'm waiting on a solder ing iron sucker to fix the chinese cheapie :D

It mostly works

Anonymous
I am going to get it with a chrome ass

Anonymous
i cant wait..

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek heh :d

1:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek youtu.be/yr9K-7Ffxdg

Anonymous
I need to buy more RAM.

Anonymous
This is not enough.

@RoryAlsop 0_0

yup. They are a band
they have an interesting song called Keeky Breeks.
which if you know your Doric is just lovely and wholesome

Are they Scottish?

Sounds like the sorta thing I'd very innocently ask my then gf "Uh... what does that mean?"

QUESTION..

Anonymous
Why does linux not like being left on?

@Jis12yearsold. Biffy are great! You haven't heard anything by Electric Mother? (a friend's heavy band - bit like Black Sabbath heavy) or Metaltech (really awesome rock/ techno crossover :-)

Anonymous
i NEVER turned off my PC when i used windows...

Anonymous
linux needs turned off at least twice a week

Anonymous
1:24 PM
or the performance goes brrrrrrrrrr

@Jis12yearsold. oh, you really should. Windows hates being always on

@Jis12yearsold. my linux boxen run for weeks or months

Anonymous
But I never had performance issues...

it has terrible memory management - some blamed on apps, some on the underlying os

Anonymous
1:24 PM
With Linux, everything becomes slow...

Anonymous
Maybe I'm wrong or its placebo.

Anonymous
migth even be the nvme ssd getting too hot??

Anonymous
fuck it. ill just restart. brb.

I have the exact opposite experience

My longest running linux box was around 7 years, and longest running solaris was 11 years.
Never had slowdown with any of them
These days I'd restart regularly after updates anyway
Just makes sense

1:25 PM
Windows (desktop) will reboot itself after a few days.

No idea how much uptime my server has
Let me check

I think my router does about a month between upgrade/reboots

105 days :D

time to update

yeah
Let me do that quickly

1:26 PM
@MechMK1 Back in the day, that badge of stability was kind of cool. Now it just implies you aren't patching :-)

My server's at 175

I am, I just don't reboot afterwards #responsiblesysadmin

@MechMK1 that is the other advantage linux always had - most patches can be applied live

I think ubuntu supports this if you have some subscription
But I never cared

Anonymous
Hmm, I don't know why it get's so slow then

Anonymous
1:29 PM
It is like all the ram gets used up

Anonymous
and wont come back...

Anonymous
but its not being used up. i can see its not.

Anonymous
so it must be the nvme ssd that doesnt like being on so mcuh or something

Anonymous
idk its weird...

Randomly, I have bouts of "What if all my systems are hacked and I don't know it?"
I wonder how I could tell
I'm sure my server would get hot as fuck when someone would try to mine BTC on it

1:32 PM
@Jis12yearsold. Have you tried rebooting it?
(sarcasm inside)

"Hello IT. Have you tried turning off and on again?"

Anonymous
I guess I'll just have to reboot more often.

Anonymous
I don't like doing that though, it's annoying.

Anonymous
Oh, wait. I think I know why.

Anonymous
Drive is encrypted...

Anonymous
1:34 PM
Must be it.

So, server is rebooting now

@Jis12yearsold. Can't see why

Anonymous
Only logical explanation I can come to, really...

Drive encrypted -> Need to reboot???
I can't figure out the logic

Anonymous
It might be contributing to the problem of slowness... After not rebooting for a period of time.

1:41 PM
@Jis12yearsold. can't think why it would

Anonymous
I mean, there's not many other explanations. The SSD might not like being on for so long or maybe the RAM doesn't like it. It's hard to pinpoint the cause, really.

Anonymous
It's just very odd and very annoying...

Anonymous
Something clearly likes being rebooted! Because I get a massive performance increase after rebooting. If I leave the machine on for more than a week it just goes crazy slow.

Nice

Anonymous
Browser becomes slow. Keyboard input gets slow. Everything...

Anonymous
1:42 PM
Even the mouse starts to lag if I leave it on long enough...

Sounds like you have the curse
A friend of mine has it too
Every electronic device he owns gets "weird"

Anonymous
Hah, yeah, apparently so :D

Anonymous
I should probably start work on trying to find this vulnerability again.

2:17 PM
Have you tried switching your desktop environment? And also setting "swappiness" to 5 (or 1).

actually also look at top and htop.

By default, linux uses a swappiness of 60 which is far too high.

I've had one particular machine that was running slow cause linux would barf on a specific NIC
as did windows

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, in htop, if you can see lots of swap used while you have lots of free RAM, that would cause slowness, and that's solved by reducing swappiness to 5 or less (not 0).

@A.Hersean and a general overview of what resources are heavily in use
but top catches some stuff htop will miss

2:20 PM
like what?

If memory serves, that time, the kernel was the issue cause of the NIC driver...
and top let me find.. something.. I can't remember what...

Anonymous
Wow, gnome uses a lot of RAM hey...

Anonymous
Maybe it is GNOME that does not like to be left on for so long without a refresh or something?

Maybe. You can try logging out (in the hope it will flush some data related to your session) and back in.
Then compare the RAM usage.

Anonymous
I mean, lots of people say to use i3.

Anonymous
2:27 PM
But I don't know how to use it, it seems like a nightmare to learn...

The same use emacs...

Anonymous
I tried before on my laptop, it was so aids..

xfce4 tbh
it's slim, but nicely usable
KDE and Gnome are both hugely bloated horrible things

Anonymous
I don't know what any of this means.

Anonymous
I hack things. I am not a "power" or "super" user by any metric.

Anonymous
2:31 PM
XFCE4 is just another window manage but very light?

I'm not sure it advertises itself as being light
but it's a hell of a lot lighter than KDE or Gnome
both of those try to do 'everything'
Depending on your distro, you might end up with lots not working etc

Anonymous
Hmm, I see.

Anonymous
Perhaps I will try using it, might be better.

Anonymous
Or I could just turn off my PC...

Anonymous
But I don't like that..

2:35 PM
Me too, I don't like reboots. But right now my Windows is begging for a reboot, and I don't know why.

I have desktop linux VMs that run for months non-stop, without issue. (Because I don't care to update them, they'll end up destroyed soon enough when their purpose ends.)

heh.
I need to rebuild my linux desktop box at some point :D

Anonymous
Some of the setups on r/unixporn are crazy...

3:28 PM
Luckily I don't play any games on this machine!

Anonymous
Because, it only has a 1050ti at the moment and it would certainly not handle 3 1440p screens while gaming :D

Anonymous
But for desktop stuff it is fine of course.

Anonymous
GPU only runs at 39c as well.

Anonymous
Even when I played games on this machine gpu never went above 59c

the cooling in my case seems to be absolutely wild

@Warlock My bad.

A: Definitive certification list

user10211Penetration testing certifications like CEH or OSCP will top the list for sure. As penetration testers and IT security professionals are expected to be experts in their respective fields (after all, you wouldn't entrust your system to someone who does not understand it right?), certificates that...

I'm trying to figure out what sort of person would compare CEH and OSCP as equals. Any clues?
And the only correct answer there has FOUR downvotes?!

Anonymous
This guy is a fucking idiot.

Anonymous
Fuck me.

Anonymous
Oh, that question was a really long time ago.

So a long time ago, CEH was better, or OSCP worse?

Anonymous
No, it just explains why the OSCP wasn't mentioned by anyone else.

Anonymous
6:26 PM
Also explains why he thought the CEH was any good. Even today people still believe it is a good cert.

@Jis12yearsold. Which is evidence of how the majority of the people in infosec don't know shit

Anonymous
@nobody Yeah, you're quite right. I am actually a big believer that a lot of people in infosec don't know all that much. They just parrot things they're being told by others.

Anonymous
I think a lot of people in infosec, especially in the last 10 years were just working in IT, but they saw that infosec pays a lot better and so they made the minimal amount of effort required to get themselves onto a much better salary.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna take me under a week to figure out the misconceptions in CEH, and then I could pass it. OSCP on the other hand, would take 2-3 months of actual study.

Anonymous
This is why I am very careful with who I interact with because deep below most people in this industry is a circlejerk they're involved in.

6:29 PM
@Jis12yearsold. Yeah like figured out how to run one scanner and started calling themselves a pentester

Anonymous
@nobody Yes, precisely.

Anonymous
Exactly that.

Anonymous
I also find a lot of people in this industry are not interested in learning. They are interested in making more money, the learning element is not something they are interested in or ever will be interested in.

Anonymous
Again, another reason why I am careful with who I interact with seriously. Because I have no desire to be involved in a conversation with someone pretending to be something they're not and is not willing to learn.

That's a major problem in infosec. The managers can't figure out their security guys is shit until they get breached

Anonymous
6:31 PM
There are a lot of great people in infosec, but it has over time devolved into a big circlejerk...

@Jis12yearsold. I haven't interacted with a lot of people so I don't know, but I have a feeling it takes only a couple of minutes to figure out who is a jerk and who really understands atleast something

Anonymous
You'd be surprised. A lot of these assertions are true for a lot of industries, sadly.

Anonymous
youtube.com/watch?v=hxgqlUIRetM useful video if you're at all interested in the extent of evil this country is involved in. Includes mention of us being involved in the Yemen war and Egypt :)

Well, that was fun. Not much closer to a crash but lots of failing.

Anonymous
Failing is always fun.

@djsmiley2kStaysInside xfce4 rules! I use xfce since maybe 2005, switching from fluxbox... it's easy to use, nice, FAST, and does not takes 2GB of ram to run...

Anonymous
Maybe I should swap over to XFCE4 :D

@Jis12yearsold. install xfce4, xfce4-panel, a couple addons for it, and you end up with a nice, fast, usable and practical desktop with lots of RAM to spare

Anonymous
@ThoriumBR Is it the same to use as GNOME?

Anonymous
9:06 PM
As in, i3 has lots of keybinds.

Anonymous
I cannot remember them all.

Anonymous
Is it similar to use I should say*

if by "the same" you mean a window manager, file manager, panel, clock, systray, and mouse-driven interface... it's exact the same

Anonymous
Right. It's just i3 was entirely keyboard..

Anonymous
I couildn't get used to it...

Anonymous
9:07 PM
But lots of people told me to use it..

if you are more a gnome/kde/windows user, xfce will be better suited
if you are screen/tmux/terminator/ratpoison guy, i3 is the one
I prefer mouse, so xfce4

Anonymous
yeah i like a mouse too...

Anonymous
even though i3 seems super fast when you know how to use it

yep, it is... but it depends on how much time you save versus how long it will take to learn it
for me, xfce4 is enough, and runs nicely even on ancient hardware

Anonymous
Awesome, thanks

Anonymous
9:10 PM
I really like r/unixporn

and by ancient I mean old pentium 2 computers

Anonymous
they are so creative.

Anonymous
i am not that creative...

yep, some post really nice things. I once did something that I could post there, but it gets boring pretty fast to look at a desktop full of bells and whistles
now my wallpaper is the exact shade of green of DMZ's footer, I only have gkrellm on the side with some default indicators, and default xfce4-panel

Anonymous
heh yeah it'd annoy me after a while too

9:15 PM
some things dont need to be pretty...

9:48 PM
I am not a 12 year old anymore... but could work for you...

1 hour later…
11:16 PM
@ThoriumBR Ratpoison is a WM on its own, so you can't use it with i3.
@Jis12yearsold. Spend some time to use it. Trust me, it will blow you away just how much more efficient it is when you don't need to use the mouse. It takes a little getting used to, but you'll never go back.
@Jis12yearsold. That wouldn't cause any slowdown.
@Jis12yearsold. Most likely some daemon that's allocating a shitload of memory and walking that memory all the time. Try restarting various daemons to see when it gets better (it's probably something Gnome-related), because there's nothing in the kernel which would cause a slowdown as time progresses. Also, unless you have very little RAM, just disable swap...
@MechMK1 Use integrity measurement like AIDE or Linux IMA with a SRTM for a root-of-trust. That will provide virtually flawless detection of modified code, even a modified BIOS, kernel, etc.
