@JourneymanGeek Israeli propaganda.

@forest Apparently from palestinian sources. And they are unguided missiles from whatever stocks that the iranians and syrians could spare, and amateur rocketry...
So its plausible

Have you heard of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo or BDS? — Esa Jokinen 4 hours ago
I feel slightly embarrassed to admit I'd only ever heard of GPS

Hey, I have a question
On topic this time
For a C++ application compiled for windows, how do I check if it is compiled via ASLR, DEP and CFG?

Anonymous
Fastest way is Get-PESecurity –file "filename"

That just gets the PE header.

UK government has proposed a bill which means you need a valid ID in order to vote. Do you want to guess how many cases of voter fraud triggered this response?

Anonymous
6... Just 6.

Anonymous
All it took was 6 cases of voter fraud for the government to declare a "voting fraud frenzy".

Anonymous
Imagine if they applied that logic to the amount of kids without homes...

Or the 140,000 people that died because of COVID...

This governments amazing ability to demonize and discredit the poor never fails to amaze me...

Anonymous
They're doing this because they know young working class voters don't vote tory.

Anonymous
What a better way to make sure they don't vote for the opposition than to make it too costly to vote.

Anonymous
What next? Fucking £50 ballot fee?

Anonymous
ABSOLUTE. VILE. CUNTS.

I don't get the problem with requiring an ID to vote
We have that here, and nobody ever complained

Anonymous
1:56 PM
It costs money?

An ID?

Anonymous
An ID costs money.

15€

And guess what? You can't get an ID if you don't have a home.

Anonymous
Passport? Need a valid address.

Anonymous
1:57 PM
Drivers license? Need a valid address.

Citizen identity card? Basically non-existent, we don't have them.

As a homeless person, you can use the address of a homeless shelter

Well, you'd think.

No, I know

Anonymous
You can, if you have the luxury of access to a homeless shelter.

Except a lot of homeless people do not.,

They specifically mention this on a ton of forms to fill out

Anonymous
Except a lot of homeless people do not. And despite what the media tells you, a lot of people in this country cannot afford a form of ID.

Anonymous
This is a vile policy.

Some even allow you to describe where you usually can be found

Anonymous
Designed to ensure that less working class voters vote labor.

1:58 PM
That seems more an economic problem, really

Anonymous
It's abhorrent.

Anonymous
Yes, a massive one.

I still think that voter IDs should be a thing

Anonymous
But what has the UK government done to try and fix poverty? Nothing.

Anonymous
Sure, I agree, in a perfect world, where everyone can afford ID. But not everyone can.

1:59 PM
If people can't afford an ID, which really shouldn't be that expensive in the first place, then that should be the problem to really focus on

Anonymous
Yes, but it IS THAT expensive.

Anonymous
That's the fucking problem.

@MechMK1 Hmmmm... I haven't had steak in a long, long time. Definitely something I miss

Anonymous
A passport is £49. A drivers license is £30~.

Anonymous
This policy is pure fucking garbage.

2:00 PM
@ConorMancone Did you recently turn vegetarian?

Anonymous
And not to mention, they also want this because it means more tracking of your person.

@Jis12yearsold. The problem is that a 30 GBP expense should never be prohibitive to somoene

Anonymous
Yes, it shouldn't be.

Anonymous
But it currently is, to a lot of people. Which is precisely the fucking issue.

@MechMK1 My wife turned me vegetarian when we got married a decade ago

Anonymous
2:01 PM
This is a nonsense policy. Instead of worrying about 6 counts of voter fraud they should be getting some one million kids off the street.

@ConorMancone rip I guess
@Jis12yearsold. I agree

@MechMK1 lol!
Although, there are exceptions.

Anonymous
Or funding the NHS so nurses aren't working 16 hour shifts.

Anonymous
But no.... They'd rather talk about voter fraud as if someone just rigged the entire election.

Last time I had steak was when I took my wife out on a fancy date. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago

2:02 PM
"Teenager arrested for stealing satchel of ketchup from school so he could make tomato soup at home"
@ConorMancone I'll be on a really fancy date in 5 days
It'll be really romantic

@MechMK1 Once every 5 years is about how often we get to go on a date

@ConorMancone Because of the kids, I assume?

Our 3rd date was our anniversary. Our second date was engagement ring shopping
@MechMK1 That's big part of it. Another chunk of it though is the fact that neither of us is terrible romantic, in that sense. More often than not we'd both rather just do something at home than go out.

I had exactly one date with my ex
@ConorMancone That sounds fair enough. As long as it works out for both of you

Anonymous
I think I've been on two dates or so only with my girlfriend too

2:04 PM
I enjoy going to restaurants, you know?

Anonymous
you're not alone

But yeah, kids are definitely part of it - the difficulty in finding babysitters you trust, staying up late is hard when there are kids who will wake you up in the middle of the night or early in the morning, etc...

I was exactly on one. She constantly complained

@MechMK1 I do enjoy taking my wife out on dates, and would probably do it more often, if it was easier, but we aren't the type that would go out every weekend. Probably more like once a month

I was this close to just getting up, pay for my food and leave

2:05 PM
Yeah, that's no fun...

Wanna hear the story?

Go for it!

@Jis12yearsold. here the voting ID is free (but need address proof... and that proof can be a handwritten letter stating you live somewhere in the city), the identity card is free (no address needed), the tax payers record is free (and you need an address proof, same as before), and the passport costs half a month's wages, takes weeks to be issued, the federal police is responsible for it...
and you need one form of ID to vote. I don't think you should be allowed to vote without an ID, it's seems absurd for me.
ah, and here you have to register where you want to vote, so they put your name in the book of that place, and you have to sign that book when you vote

So due to a lack of projects, I had 2 days of vacation during the week. So I asked my gf if she wanted to go to that korean restaurant in the city, which she really enjoyed last time.
her response was a long sigh, followed by "If you want..."
I told her we didn't have to go if she didn't want
She responded with "Whatever, I don't want to fight"

Too late...

2:15 PM
ooof.

so if someone tries to vote and someone already did, that's going to be a problem and investigation... because election fraud is a serious crime, homicide not much because it depends on who killed who...

So that was already a great start.

@MechMK1 </sarcasm>

Yes
So then she asked me if my mom was coming with us, and I said it would be a weird date if my mom was with us
She didn't say anything, but I could tell that wasn't the answer she wanted.
So then we went there, and as you may expect on a tuesday early evening, barely anyone was there, which was really nice. The restaurant was nice and quiet then
I asked what she wanted to drink, her response was "I dunno"
"Cola?" - "No"
"Soda water?" - "No"
"Tea?" - "No"
"Fanta?" - "No"
This went on for quite a long time
Finally, she had settled on a cola, which she then refused to drink
Now for the food
I went for noodles with black bean paste and thin grilled beef strips, which was very good
She went for the typical "I dunno", but because they didn't have that, she essentially just chose randomly
Which ended up being seafood
She looked at it, poked at it, didn't eat anything
I asked her what's wrong, she just responded "nothing"
Then she began to complain
"The glass for the cola seems too tiny. It's a scam"
"The food is cold and it looks so weird"
"Why is barely anyone here? Is it a bad restaurant?"
"Why is your mom not here?"
After like half an hour of this I just stopped responding
I just went up to the waiter, paid him (and tipped generously) and then left.
Didn't speak a word on the way home
To this day I don't know what her problem was

Negative outlook on life?
My mom has a hard time not complaining about things
She got it from her mom
(don't tell her I said that!)

2:25 PM
if a woman says:
- do as you want, don't dare.
- I don't want to fight, brace yourselves
- I don't care, she does care a lot
- I don't want anything, she wants something
- you can go to bed and I take care of whatever, she will be mad at you if you do so
- I am not mad, she is mad

Talk about a stressful situation though.... oof

looks like one of my gfs...

I still don't know the underlying reason of her being pissed off
"Hey, I'd like to invite you to a lovely dinner in a really good restaurant, which you enjoy going to" - "Fuck you you piece of shit! How dare you?!"
Man...
I wish I was gay, because men don't act this fucking irrational.

Anonymous
@ThoriumBR As I said, I am not against needing an ID.

Anonymous
In a perfect world, we could require ID and it wouldn't add a barrier to voting.

Anonymous
2:31 PM
The problem here is that because of the sheer state this country is in, requiring an ID at this stage is a huge barrier for most people.

@MechMK1 Sadly, there isn't anyone who can answer that question. Normally the only person who could answer that question is your (ex)gf. It's quite possible though that even she didn't fully know why she was irritated at the idea, and if even she did know, she certainly couldn't have communicated the reason

Anonymous
It is a huge barrier for first time voters, working class people with borderline unlivable wages, homeless people and many other groups which simply cannot afford to pay the extortionate costs of a passport or a drivers license.

So it's just one of those "great mysteries" of life

Anonymous
We don't have such a thing as ID cards in the UK, so that isn't a workable solution either. Besides, even if you can afford these things, you cannot acquire ID without a valid, registered, serviceable address that you live at.

Anonymous
That's the law.

Anonymous
2:33 PM
So, I say again; I don't disagree with the premise of needing an ID to vote, I disagree with it until they fix all these fucking barriers which will have a huge impact when they implement their policy of needing an ID to vote.

Anonymous
Most importantly, they should be focusing on the fact we have a few million kids homeless in the UK before getting bent out of shape over 6 counts of voter fraud, 6.

Anonymous
I think homeless children take priority over 6 fucking votes. Well, they should. But yet in the last 10 years nobody has made any real policies which have fixed the homelessness problem.

Anonymous
I don't think this government even wants to acknowledge its existence. When they do, they never give any indication they are doing anything about it.

2:49 PM
Let me fix that statement for you:

In the past 100,000 years no one has made any real policies which have fixed the homelessness problem
The reality is that homelessness as a problem will never be fixed. To be clear, I don't say that to suggest that it should just be ignored, but the reality is that the nature of our world does not make such things fixable

huh, why's it unfixable?
I'm with @Jis12yearsold, the goverment just like to put their fingers in their ears, then come election time they'll show how wonderful they were at stopping the 6 counts of voter fraud.

3:21 PM
the problem of homelessness is unfixable because fixing it would take funds away from programs that interest the government, and homelessness don't interest the government

@djsmiley2kStaysInside Let me ask a counter point: homelessness has existed for all of human history. Why do you think that it is fixable?

@ConorMancone well, we have enough resources to give everyone a house....

Why do you think that homelessness is as simple as, "there are not enough houses"?

I don't know what the issue is, tbh.

Have you ever worked with the homeless?

3:26 PM
Not directly.

To be fair, there are many homeless out there that are homeless due to circumstances outside of their control, and if they were given a house that could live in for free, would make great use of it

yeah
I'm aware there's some who don't want a home

But there are also many who are homeless due to choice, or because of mental illness, addiction (which is a form of mental illness), etc...

but I don't.... think of them being in the group that @Jis12yearsold. is talking about.

My point being: the issues is just not that simple, nor is it anything that government could fix
Again, I'm not saying, "so just ignore it!" I'm just saying that life is never so simple

3:28 PM
Ah cool
so because something is hard
we shouldn't do it.

Literally the exact opposite of what I just said :)

Mainly I reflexively respond to anything that sounds a bit like, "The government should fix this!" There are lots of problems which the government not only can't fix, but will likely make worse by any attempts at interventions
Which, I understand, is not what was being said, but I still had to make my aside :)

2 hours later…
5:10 PM
what's a good way to have backups that are safe from any kind of ransomware or any kind of related attack? I am thinking of creating a (partial) backup copy on DVD, that way it's guaranteed to be read-only

3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of the data, on 2 different types of media, with at least 1 copy off site

yes, but in theory ransomware can corrupt all of the copies, as long as you connect to all of them before you realize they are actually corrupted

pull data, don't push data...
IBM TSM Enterprise Backup have an agent on the client that is accessed by the server (not the other way around), so the data on the backup is safe, because the client does not have direct access to it

I think the "professional" solution is something called "data diodes", but I haven't looked into that yet. I suppose it costs money too

because if you have a external USB backup drive that's plugged in all the time, you have no backup

5:20 PM
@ThoriumBR, you said "accessed by the server", but a server is by definition something that is connected to the net... and that could be compromised as well

@reed data diode is a niche thing... it's very expensive, not very practical, low bandwidth, and usually not needed
@reed speaking from experience: professional backup have a dedicated network only for backups, and you can be sure few servers are more protected than the backup server...
just think: every single database transaction, every single line of code, every single email, every single meeting file is there... why bother compromising the code repository, and the file server, and the email server, and so on? just compromise the backup server and every single byte is there
usually they can be accessed only by a management subnet, and the backup network is firewalled and no incoming connections are allowed. shell access on the server is restricted, and you do all your tasks using the backup management software, not shell commands. and if you have to connect by shell, it's inside a change management record and you don't connect alone.

5:37 PM
@ThoriumBR, interesting, but what do you mean by "it's inside a change management record and you don't connect alone"?

Anonymous
6:14 PM
@ConorMancone The problem here is that the government has never made any attempt to even acknowledge the few million homeless kids we have in this country.

Anonymous
There's a big difference between not fixing something and not even making an attempt. This government has never made a single attempt to fix this problem. In-fact, they have actively contributed to it.

Anonymous
@djsmiley2kStaysInside Exactly. Because they already know that the working class do not vote for them, but the people that do vote for them are not affected by issues such as homelessness as they're already very asset wealthy. So, things like voter fraud and other nonsense policies are more likely to sit better with the people that already vote for them.

Anonymous
That being people who aren't impacted by social or economic problems. This is the Tory way, it is the Tory strategy. You only have to look at their manifestos to see that. And until there is a massive shift in the political landscape of this country - that won't change and they are unlikely to not be elected again.

Anonymous
You have to remember that Tony Blair almost single-handedly destroyed any faith the public had in the labor party. Gordon Brown further ran their reputation into the floor, as far as it could possibly go. The Tory's have been using this in their campaigns and in their policies ever since. And that is the reason why they only need to solve issues such as voter fraud because that's what Tory voters care about. Tory voters almost in whole do not care about social issues.

@reed it means you have to submit to the change committee why you need to change something, what you will change, what can go wrong, what you have prepared if something goes wrong, and during the change there will be someone with you to help you and to not let you wreck havoc on the server...
and if the committee approves you can do it... and if you connect to the server without a change record in place, auditing will be in your tail and you will have to explain. and depending on what happened when you connected to the server without a change record you are subject to employment termination
it's like the crew/cockpit management system on the commercial airliners. even trivial tasks like changing altitude have to be sent to traffic controllers, acknowledged, and you have 2 pilots on the cockpit: one controlling the plane and the other assisting.
before the flight you submit the flight plan, you follow it, if something goes wrong you follow the procedures for that kind of fault, and if something goes wrong and you followed everything it's fine... if you didn't, you are fried.
I mean, if something went wrong and it wasn't your fault...

1 hour later…
7:44 PM
@ThoriumBR, interesting, thanks

for example, I had to update the license key on a monitoring service at one of my clients. work done? open the software, paste the key, press enter. trivial, right? but there's change management.
I had to submit a change form containing all servers involved, why I needed the change, what was the impact on the service and other services, how long downtime it would create, what was the risks for the change, every command I would execute, what was the test plan AND backout plan. They had to discuss it, approve it, and I went on executing everything.

So it sounds like "data separation" is achieved through strict security policies and the usual security controls (firewalls), rather than through hardware solutions (data diodes, read-only media, etc.).
I suppose patch management (that is timely security updates) is going to be a nightmare on such systems
because you need the highest level of security

after ^V and enter I had to execute all the test procedure, screenshot everything, and close the change as successful. It took me 15 minutes to schedule the change, 30 seconds to execute it...
@reed it's pretty easy actually. you have the entire environment mapped (or you will have to map it after a disaster), you have all versions of all systems, and you know what implications any downtime will have, you have backups, you have a development environment and test environment to test the changes, and you have a process that was used time and time again.
a new critical patch is released? nice! clone the production on dev, implement on dev, have the test team test everything there, log the changes... all went ok? good! apply the same process on prod, with the support teams onboard or standby, with monitoring teams looking at everything, and off-hours.
something went wrong? document the error, clone the prod environment again, apply the patch again taking that error into account until you can apply the fix and it passes all tests
it's easier than if you don't have change management, everyone is applying fixes at the same time, and if something breaks you don't know if the new kernel is the issue, or there's a conflict on your libraries, or the routing/dns/firewall changed, or an employee is sabotaging something

8:01 PM
yeah, on second thought I guess you are right

@reed yes, "data separation" is usually achieved by process. development don't touch production data, operation don't touch development data, backup servers aren't directly accessible, all access on live servers with live data is audited, and backups are usually saved on tapes and stored offsite

in my case I guess the simplest option is to just have copies on read-only media (like DVDs)

so if someone or something crosses the boundaries, the monitoring systems WILL trip, and you and your manager will receive an automated mail, and an auditing process will automatically start
@reed I am working on a backup solution that involves those shiny new peer2peer blockchain data storages (siacoin and storj)... it basically copies your data to a staging server that keeps the metadata on your files, and send the changed ones to the blockchain-backed storage
if something is deleted, you can restore from the blockchain... it's all theoretical yet, but it does not have any technical reason to not work
and it's a hobby/private project...

doesn't sound like a "simple" solution to me :D But I'm not sure I understand, where is the actual data going to be stored?

"on the cloud"...
now, seriously... this is from my memory: the file is encrypted (aes-256) broken into chunks, and every chunk is sent to a different peer. to avoid losing one peer and losing the entire file, an erasure function is employed, like RAID. so 1GB file turns to 1.6GB on the cloud, and 50 pieces are created but only 26 are needed to re-create the file.
you pay the network for 2 things: stored size, and transfer size, and it's usually charged by TB: $10/TB/Mo storage, and $30/TB/Mo transfer, for example... so if you store a backup and never need it, you only pay the storage price, because you didn't transferred anything
if you did needed the backup, you pay the storage used, and the transfer size
this time is a good time to be on the buyer side, because the amount of available space both on sia and storj are enormous, and the prices are pretty cheap... anyone can install the client on their computer and rent space, so it's easy to onboard
storing data there is a little more complicated. you have to create your wallet, fund it with whatever token they are using, search for the average price to see how much chance you have to store 10TB for 5 cents per month, and either drag and drop files on the software to upload, or write your own backup software accessing the API
I think that's why there's so much people renting their disks, and few paying for space
as Google Photos isn't free anymore, I intend to create an end to end encrypted photo backup service using those services, because usually people don't edit their pictures on the phone, so there won't be changed files but only new files. create an app to list all files on your phone, encrypt them with AES locally, send them to my server (now opaque binary blobs), and I will use the API to store all files for you.
downside is that you cannot search your pictures by subject, no way to see all them online, and no way to un-share anything: your sharing link will have the symmetric key for that file

8:21 PM
so those systems work by distributing your (encrypted) backup copies to other people, to ensure (theoretical) availability as multiple off-site backups, right? It's basically how peer2peer warez work, you can always find them as long as enough people still have copies

yep, just like that
