@MargaretBloom Ah. So it's stored in memory reserved for the BIOS (well, for ACPI), and copy_dsdt just copies it to somewhere else as well? Neat. I might need to hook up a logic analyzer to the firmware and see if anything I do at runtime can cause the OS to re-read it. — forest Mar 22 at 10:28
I need to get to doing this. :/

3 hours later…
4:10 AM
I found an IPMI service and dumped a hash with scanner/ipmi/ipmi_dumphashes. Is there anything the blue team can do about it besides disabling IPMI or using strong passwords?

8:43 AM
I can't cope with the world anymore.

Anonymous
How does everyone not see the pure ridiculousness of this statement: "Jerusalem police used CS gas to get people out of the mosque and Palestinian youths threw rocks at them"

Anonymous
It's fucking baffling,

Anonymous
"The scale of rocket fire launched from Gaza into Israel suggests Hamas' military capabilities are growing"

Anonymous
Just, lol.

Anonymous
The way the UK reports this makes me absolutely fucking sick.

9:05 AM
@Jis12yearsold. Well they did launch a 120 over rockets into israel

Anonymous
Of which roughly 90% were blocked.

Cause they've been doing it for years and the isrealis got lots of practice

Anonymous
To suggest that their rockets A. ever cause as much damage B. have the potential to cause as much as damage is absolutely absurd.

@Jis12yearsold. uh. That's cause they're getting intercepted, cause... they keep doing this
every few years

Anonymous
So what you'

9:07 AM
They have lots of potential to do damage

Anonymous
Let me get this straight,.

@Jis12yearsold. I donno, spend all the money they blow on rockets smarter?

Anonymous
okay...

Anonymous
IM not gonan bother

Anonymous
because im gonna make myself mad

Anonymous
9:07 AM
thats an absolutely reprehensible view to hold

Anonymous
but whatever

Anonymous
CS gas vs rocks

Anonymous
Good one

They probably could have bought the whole neighbourhood that caused this shit for the money they spend on weapons. But nooo, they'll sit in civilian neighbourhood, launch missiles, and use the poor civilians who get killed when they retaliate
@Jis12yearsold. and fireworks, and there's been more serious things.

Anonymous
I am absolutely not defending all of their actions.

9:09 AM
And I'm sure if they throw enough rocks, Palestine will be free

Anonymous
But to suggest they have the ability to cause any significant damage against Israel is ABSURD.

@Jis12yearsold. there also have been...

Anonymous
They are merely the occupier.

suicide bombings, gun attacks, kidnappings...

Anonymous
And Israel has taken their land for years and they continue to advance and take more.

Anonymous
9:09 AM
Evict people out of their homes.

@Jis12yearsold. There was this little war... and....
isrealis took a big chunk of Egypt. Then gave it back

Anonymous
Oh right so thats fine then

Anonymous
"INVADE SOMEONE AS LONG AS YOU GIVE IT BACK"

Anonymous
yeah...

9:10 AM
@Jis12yearsold. Oh, the Egyptians started it

Anonymous
tell that to the people without a fucking home

@Jis12yearsold. So - maybe, just maybe...
they could use the funds they use to fire rockets and kill people...
to get these people their homes back?

Anonymous
i cant be bothered, we're always going to be on different sides of this. israel has 400000x the resources that the Palestinians have

Anonymous
to suggest its a fair fight is ridiculous

Anonymous
lmfao

9:11 AM
I'm not saying the israelis are farting rainbows or anything
I'm saying the Palestinians are being used as proxies and patsies, and their 'own side' isn't interested in freedom or peace.

Anonymous
No, but you seem to be suggesting that it's absolutely okay for them to take people out of their homes, kill children as long as they give the land back after.

And its always common folks who suffer

Anonymous
Well, that's something we can agree on.

Anonymous
Doesn't make it right though, does it.

@Jis12yearsold. uh. I'm saying "giving back their homes' isn't something that's impossible

Anonymous
9:12 AM
Oh it is.

Anonymous
They won't give back those homes.

But the constant escalation makes it so

Anonymous
Israel have never had any interest in having Palestinians in their community unless they call themselves citizens of Israel.

@Jis12yearsold. and... how many rocks makes giving it back possible? How many missiles?

Anonymous
Wipe out your identity and there's peace.

Anonymous
9:13 AM
Which is absolutely abhorrent.

Anonymous
And even then, there's restrictions on Palestinians in Israel continuously.

@Jis12yearsold. Identities arn't that weak. Also - there was an attempt to set up an independant palestinian state... uh....
@Jis12yearsold. If its another country...
I mean, you want it to be its own country and not have borders?
Cause I'd really like a functional palestinian state, and them to have their land back and... people not firing rockets at each other.

Anonymous
What I think is that the people of Palestine want to be able to call themselves Palestinians and not be fucking looked down upon for not wiping out their entire identity else they cannot integrate Or having restrictions placed on them.

@Jis12yearsold. uh, also, weren't they part of jordan before the war?
@Jis12yearsold - which means having their own country no?
Or yanno "Palestinian <country> or Arab <country>"
My dad's a ceylon tamil who left before the war - he's also singaporean.
The problem here is somehow identity here means the other country not existing

Anonymous
Well, that's precisely what the Israeli's want, lmfao.

Anonymous
9:18 AM
It's not their country, but they want it.

@Jis12yearsold. uh....
You do realise a lot of the countries who support Hamas and other organisations there...
want israel to be wiped off the map right?

Anonymous
And is that not fair given that Israel wants Palestine wiped off the map?

Yeah so...

Anonymous
That argument is like saying: "its bad the jews want germany wiped off the map" all meanwhile Hitler was wiping Jews off the map.

Anonymous
I would also want something wiped off the map if they were oppressing me.

9:20 AM
...

The Arab–Israeli conflict includes the political tension, military conflicts and disputes between Arab countries and Israel, which escalated during the 20th century, but had mostly faded out in the early 21st century. The roots of the Arab–Israeli conflict have been attributed to the support by Arab League member countries for the Palestinians, a fellow League member, in the ongoing Israeli–Palestinian conflict, which in turn has been attributed to the simultaneous rise of Zionism and Arab nationalism towards the end of the 19th century, though the two national movements had not clashed until the...
I mean, the conflict started right after the brits left

Anonymous
Well, we definitely shouldn't move back in. I know who's side my government are on.

Anonymous
It certainly isn't Palestine's. If they're willing to sell fighter jets to UAE to be used in Yemen then they're for sure willing to supply bombs to Israel.

Oh, don't get me started on the brits and their 'cartagraphy'
@Jis12yearsold. uh...
The israelis don't really need british weapons

Anonymous
No of course not, they got the US' in plenty of supply.

9:30 AM
They build their own

Anonymous
But you know, can never have too much firepower against rocks right?

Anonymous
Gotta stock up!

Anonymous
Someone might throw a bigger rock than usual.

Anonymous
That would be a disaster. Might need an entire tank to combat it!

Right. I'm sure there's no missiles being fired over the past week

Anonymous
9:32 AM
Oh, I know they're firing missiles. But as I said, less than 90% of them even strike and when they do, they have more than often had a minuscule impact.

Anonymous
As opposed to Israel's which land nearly every time and blow up entire buildings very often.

@Jis12yearsold. uh, oh, let me clarify
Hamas is firing unguided missles that are often getting intercepted.

Anonymous
Ah well that's okay then.

The israelis on the other hand, basically are blowing up specific buildings
Cause yanno

Anonymous
You got intercepted? Too bad, now I'm going to blow up an entire building

Anonymous
9:34 AM
Very rational and proportional response...

@Jis12yearsold. where the missiles are being launched from

Anonymous
Oh theres a kid of a fighter in the street? Yeah, bomb that kid!

or has leadership

Anonymous
His dad is a monster!

Anonymous
Ah and screw the civilians, yeah?

Anonymous
9:34 AM
I'm sure they'll cope. When 80% of the water supply is controlled by Israel.

Actually - there's reports of palestinian kids getting killed by Hamas missiles

Anonymous
They'll be fine on the street though, I'm sure.

Anonymous
You know, Israel will take care of them right?

I'm sure their parents will be proud of their sacrifice for palestinian freedom

Anonymous
Give them back their home they just destroyed?

9:35 AM
@Jis12yearsold. Its the middle east...
what water?

Anonymous
Ah yes. That makes it fine then. Palestine doesn't need water because there isn't any anyways?

@Jis12yearsold. On the contrary - a lot of water is from desalination
so... uh...
Maybe they could be building plants in their own country instead of missiles?

Anonymous
So Israel can: kill children, bomb buildings, have much more resources than Palestine ever has, and it's all okay as long as they give them back their buildings, which they never have and never will.

@Jis12yearsold. Hamas is doing most of those too
is it ok?

Anonymous
Not until they can capture the land and build their own buildings and move all of the Palestinians out.

Anonymous
9:37 AM
Except they have FAR less power and resources.

Anonymous
It's not at all a fair war.

Anonymous
Lmfao.

@Jis12yearsold. most of which is going towards exports of ordanance, explosively to israel

Anonymous
Well, they brought it on themselves for taking land which never belonged to them in the first place.

@Jis12yearsold. tbh - if it was a 'fair' war - You do realise israel with crap weapons, no manpower and hardly a country wiped the floor with the entire arab world right?
In the middle of a holiday
Its an unfair war, the palestinians are the victims, but its more than "poor palestinians, being oppressed by the israelis"

Anonymous
9:40 AM
Don't worry, I'll get my girlfriend to call her family and say: "oh you know those bombs that just landed near you? Don't worry about it, someone on the internet just said Israel plans to build those houses for you back"

Anonymous
I'm sure that'll ease their pain...

Anonymous
And ability to sleep...

10:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol. "Israelis are driving us out of our home's but you know, we gotta be nice to them. Because we want peace."
"In fact, we're really sorry that we can't invite them over for a cup of tea because our house just got blown up."

Anonymous
lol

Anonymous
Yeah but they threw rocks at them! @nobody

Anonymous
So a bomb is completely justified and proportional! ;)

Yeah Rocks!!! And we were just trying to force them out of their mosques

Anonymous
Hahahahahahhaha, yeah.

10:55 AM
Fucking charlatans throwing rocks back at our CS gas!

They made us waste $100 on another can, how dare they!

@Jis12yearsold. Ah, but what if that's what they want you to think?

Anonymous

Good point.

It is just far easier to expect the worst in everyone and everything.

If you expect the worst you don't need to spend time thinking about the other possibilities.

test2

12:57 PM
@ThoriumBR Yeah. I got it to gray out deleted messages, so I was testing that
Now I have one last problem that I don't have a solution to. My internet connection is somewhat patchy, so it might disconnect while I'm away from my computer and the I won't receive the deleted messages

rent a VPS? hire a LDDMaaS? (Log Deleted DMZ Messages as a Service)

I can't afford a better internet connection, and you're telling me to rent a VPS? :)

I pay $1/mo on a vps
and I found one that's $3/year

Nice, what do you pay with?
Credit card?

yep
you get a shared core with a dozen others, have 10gb of storage, maybe 256mb of ram, 100mbps shared network, and ipv6 address... but works for a lot of things
I have one VPS with 256mb, and it runs Apache, MySQL, transmission-daemon, nextcloud, pihole, wireguard, paperless, archivebox, and a bunch of custom services I wrote in years...
but I upgraded the storage to 500gb

1:09 PM
Damn, don't have a card. All I have is cash (actually not a lot of that either). I mean I could ask my dad to pay with his card, but not gonna bug him for just a LDDMaaS
But anyways for the future maybe, what vps service do you use?

I have used several: BuyVM (formerly frantech, and they are good), ionos (formerly 1and1), digital ocean, mediatemple, ovh... depending on the budget of the project

So, basically, can you just google for vpses and trust that they aren't a scam or something?

lowendbox.com have good promotions
@nobody basically that
but mediatemple, ionos, digital ocean and ovh are reputable providers, with lots of infrastructure, working support channels, and are more expensive
I have one vps from buyvm for 8 years now, they are small but they are responsive
but there's always the risk on dead cheap ones, so don't pay for an year unless it's $10 or less...
paying $200 for a premium vps on somewhere just to them to go dark overnight can hurt

I see
How does a VPS compare to AWS in pricing?

this one is $6/year -> https://my.limitlesshost.net/order/config/index/usahosting-da/?group_id=39&pricing_id=303&coupon=XS50
it depends on how you use it...
aws can be pretty expensive if something goes wrong on your capacity planning
$6/year is pretty cheap and you can sleep in peace knowing you will pay $6. AWS can make your bill go from cents to hundreds of dollars if someone breaks into your server and mines monero.
so you have to configure your account with tight limits for spending, configure alerts when the usage goes over a threshold, READ the reports... it's more hassle...

1:23 PM
Shit. That's gonna hurt

but if you use just for testing or as proxy for circumventing geoblocking, can be very cheap... but comparing to $0.50/mo, it isn't worthy

Yeah VPS seems better

this guy went from $27/mo to $2700 overnight
his fault... he sent a 13.7GB trial SQL server disk image (qcow file) to his site, someone found it, posted online, and a lot of people downloaded it overnight... 30TB traffic went by in 2 days
30TB seems a lot, but my transmission-daemon transfers way more than that in a month, and I pay $7.5/mo... not $2.7k

1 hour later…

2:43 PM
@nobody AWS can just...

@Jis12yearsold. Nothing right now, but thanks for the offer!

@ThoriumBR I used to do buyvm's cheapest tier, they're good folks.

Just kidding. I don't enjoy anything else, back to the disassembler I go :)

@Jis12yearsold. It's this, but the random question reception thing happens way too often. Once we had an HNQ that was basically, "Never heard of emojis"

4:39 PM
@nobody I think my highest scoring post across all of SE is still from a silly HNQ ages ago. Not one of my good posts

Q: Is there truth to the philosophy that you should sync; sync; sync; sync?

JoshWhen I was first introduced to Linux, working at Cisco Systems in 2000, I was taught the merits of the sync command, used to flush buffers to disk to prevent filesystem corruption / data loss. I was told not only by coworkers there, but by friends in college to always run sync "a few" or "a bunch...

I found that "legend" while looking for more info about sync, and I realized I actually tend to execute sync more than once, to feel "safer", and I don't know why
I was about to write a simple script to automate my method for "safely removing a drive", when I started to wonder whether I should put some "sleep" between commands because I don't trust sync. LOL
I currently do: sync (maybe more than once); udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sdb1; udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb;
in theory that should be ok, and sync shouldn't even be necessary (unmount is enough). However I don't feel comfortable writing a script, it's like I don't trust those commands to only end after they have done everything they had to do, not sooner

I saw people put echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches on the cron to run every 5 minutes... I still don't understand why
they didn't even knew how to interpret free -m and thought that lots of memory on cache was bad, and lots of free memory was good...

as far as I know, there isn't a way to free the file cache on linux. I wanted to find a way to drop the cache to force a file read from the disk, but I haven't found a way
unless you fill the RAM, then if you try to read a big file it won't be in memory, and it will actually be read from the disk

dropping the cache does that, and you can mount ext4 with the option dax (kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/ext4.txt) to bypass page cache and always do direct io

5:52 PM
@ThoriumBR, oh, cool
the echo 3 to drop the cache might be useful to me

Linus wasn't that happy with that, but it works wonders when you have fast io and memory is constrained... like virtualized servers with virtualized storage
echo 3 will drop EVERYTHING... even the inode caches, and that will be a large performance penalty
echo 1 drops only the page cache, and probably that's what you intend
Oracle database usually uses direct_io because it will manage the cache itself
and you can throw the raw disk at it, not even format it with ext4 or xfs or anything... less layers, more performance

6:54 PM
Hey, do any of you know of any free service that provides phone numbers for signing up to websites? Something like 10minutesmail
I know there are some free sms services but their numbers almost always seem to be blocked or used

7:11 PM
I usually google around, go straight to page 3 or 4, and test them all until one works
because pages 1 and 2 are going to have popular providers, and popular means blocked

@nobody last time I tried (time ago) none of the services seemed to work. In theory it should be very difficult to find a number that works, unless you are very lucky and find one that has never been used, and for a website that isn't very popular
