No no its not like we'll let you censor us, even if you wanted to (after all, you're just a mere diamond-less mortal) :P

8 hours later…
9:24 AM
That is true

As a random Youtuber once said: "Ernest Hemingway wrote that 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for' and I agree with the last part."

Q: Can someone prove my theory wrong about passwords (but not by theoritical answers)?

AmitCan someone prove my theory wrong (but not by theoritical answers)? My theory is - even if passwords are simple and easy to remember but if they are atleast 15 characters long (like - "iwenttobahamasinjuly") then these passwords are unbreakable.

iloveunitedstates is just an example. There are billions of many other simple long passwords like - "ivisitedbahamasinjuly", etc. I searched in google but I could not find any tool or library for doing this, that's why I asked it here. Everyone is saying that my theory is wrong, """"BUT NO ONE HAS PROVED IT YET THAT MY THEORY IS WRONG"""". — Amit yesterday
The good thing is, there is no need to prove it - the fact that all his passwords are going to get cracked in seconds proves it enough

How the hell do you prove something?
We tried proving it mathematically, (s)he doesn't want that

12:29 PM
schroeder proved it by showing how some long but simple password was in the top 100 passwords
He said that doesn't prove iut
I'm going to prove it by telling him he's a fucking idiot.

"Prove me wrong but you're not allowed actually to do anything"
"Oh, you can't do anything with those rules? That must mean I'm right!"

@MechMK1 really?
How exactly does that prove you're right?
Or any better than that chap. Pick fights that matter ;)

@JourneymanGeek That's not the point. The point is to feel better, not to find who's right or wrong. But I agree that it would be unproductive trolling/fighting/bullying/being stupid.

@A.Hersean Oh feeling better is a good reason but... the mud
I'd rather stand on the high ground and toss intellectual grenades

Yeah, nobody thinks about the mud

12:39 PM
@A.Hersean No I don't!

Ha!

So if you do actually call him an idiot, or worse, you get flagged, maybe suspended and... you feel worse.
@nobody that's the problem!

But maybe nobody has the solution, too.

speaking of which
@J-- I got my keyboard, finally
@A.Hersean maybe nobody likes mud!

1:05 PM
"You can't prove that my theory is wrong" isn't how science works.

@MechMK1 Sure
But are you going to change his mind?

@JourneymanGeek I don't need to, nor could I really. You can't use rational arguments to convince an irrational person.

Exactly

1:21 PM
Somehow, it reminds me of the father of a friend who became more and more clinically paranoid due to a degenerative mental affliction (uncurable). Last time I saw him he believed I became part of the conspiracy/cabal against him because I told him that no, his "proof" did not manage to break RSA.

@A.Hersean There is a very simple way to show that you broke RSA :^)

You can't disprove a theory without a theoretical answer.
"All owls are red. Disprove that without talking about owls."

The more constraints you give, the less useful the theory

@MechMK1 I know, he too. But he did not have access to a supercomputer to run his algorithm (he tried it on "small" numbers). But a complexity analysis of the code revealed that it was useless to try it.

@A.Hersean Let me guess: He didn't understand the complexity analysis, so that must mean that the result of it is wrong?
I also broke RSA, coincidentally

1:36 PM
He could code smart optimizations. But he had no number theory knowledge.

It's very simple, actually: Just iterate all prime numbers until you find the correct one.
I tried it for small numbers and it works

It was a pity to watch such a smart man degrading with time. A bit like with a multiple sclerosis, but hereditary. This was something like 10-15 years ago. Today he should be blind and in a wheelchair.

I don't know if it's worse to have a mental or physical degenerative disease...
losing your body and being conscious of it, or losing your mind

It's fucked up either way
I guess if my outlook on life was complete mental degeneration with no chance of recovery, well...I guess I'd shortcut it

2:10 PM
Since the mind controls the body, loosing it (as in this case) often makes you lose your body. And since it's only parts of the brain that degenerates, you can be conscious of it.

the question is what is worse: a healthy mind on a disabled body (like Stephen Hawking) or a healthy body and disabled mind

@MechMK1 That ends up being the choice of many multiple sclerosis patients, even when it's not legal.

@ThoriumBR I'd take the healthy mind in a disabled body if I had to choose
But you can't choose in life
We tend to believe that life is fair, simply because we wish to live in a fair world.

I would ask for what my father got: we worked normally that day, went home, had a cerebral aneurysm and was dead the next morning

We say things like "Good things will happen to you if you do good things" or "You deserve something good to happen to you", but it's all cope

2:14 PM
from healthy strong man to dead in 10 hours

Horrible things happen to good people, and horrible people succeed in life
And just as Thorium said, sometimes people die out of nowhere

@ThoriumBR I'd prefer that to dying slowly

The biggest challenge in life is to accept that none of it makes sense in any ways. We're all governed by complete randomness.
My preferred way out is a 12ga to the brainstem
Just blows the whole brain out in the process

his father got bedridden for almost a decade... when my grandfather died, all his sons wept but my father... my father said his father rested, as he was dead since getting bedridden. he always said he wanted to die working, and he got that

My grandmother died over the course of several weeks from her cancer
It was still comparatively fast
But she had no life left in those weeks
To quote a song: "Was ist der Tod, wenn du im Leben kein Leben mehr spürst?" meaning "What is death, when you can't feel life in your life anymore?"

2:39 PM
@MechMK1 Salvation.

@A.Hersean That's the next line, actually, asking if death is a punishment, or salvation

3:08 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nice :D

Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek How is it? :D

@J-- It reminds me of my old keyboard when it was new
the keycaps are a bit nicer than what razer shipped (though hard to read with the lights off)
and I didn't realise over a decade how quiet my old keyboard had gotten
I have cherry blues so worn out they are silent :D

Anonymous
Hah, I guess that's a good thing so nice :D

Anonymous
Glad you like it. I was like a little kid when I finished this build.

it was prebuilt :(

Anonymous
3:10 PM
Still annoyed by the fact my keycaps aren't here yet...

I was hoping to assemble it - swapped out the spacebar for the 'spare' set they sent (I shoulda gotten something else but I kinda forgot to check what the default is

Anonymous
Awh that's a shame.

Anonymous
Time to buy another! ;)

Anonymous
haha.

Anonymous
3:11 PM
I kinda' went crazy with buying stuff this week.

Oh
this was a few months back
and I have AMD 3000 series APU based NUC-type machine on order this month

Anonymous
For example, I bought 3 colours of these - prototypist.net/collections/live-group-buys/products/…

Anonymous
:D

Anonymous
I bought a few more keycap sets as well but they're not coming till next year or end of this year

3:12 PM
I need to dig up my aliexpress one
after I clear my desk

Anonymous
That reminds me.

Anonymous
I bought this one too, wait.

Anonymous
^ In white :D

Anonymous
I can't WAIT for that one to come

3:16 PM
lol
never tried taobao
the fact that its all in chinese is a bit of a thing

Anonymous
Me neither actually. But this deskmat is quite popular in the keyboard community.

Anonymous
So I was more... UH

Anonymous
Accepting? Of purchasing it.

Anonymous
Yeah, I had to use an agent, haha.

lol
finding stuff/understanding what's going on lol

Anonymous
3:17 PM
Yeah it's a little tricky haha

I really can't do anything too fun until 2023 tho
when I move out

Anonymous
Wow, that is a far ahead plan...

Anonymous
Is there a specific reason for 2023?

Anonymous
You are buying a property, I guess?

Anonymous
Instead of renting?

3:25 PM
I live with my parents for now
My new place ought to be finished by then
Shoulda been 2022, but covid's ruined a lotta things

Anonymous
Oh, I see.

little 2 room place in a really new public development
(can afford better but can't buy a bigger new build public housing as a single person)

Anonymous
Oh nice :D Sounds fine :)

Anonymous
Myself and my girlfriend only have a 2 bed apartment and its more than enough space its just one extra room so :)

Planning ahead is how I make it through today :D

Anonymous
3:28 PM
I dont even need the extra room but i like being closed in and stuff

Anonymous
when i work so thats why i have it

Anonymous
we rent this though

Oh uh
If my math is right, I might be able to own it outright

Anonymous
Oh nice, that's awesome :D

Anonymous
I was going to buy a bigger apartment in this block (I only like apartments) but then I decided I really, really don't want to be in this country much longer so we just rented a smaller space a few floors down.

3:31 PM
@J-- no real choices
I'd get a 3 room, but once again
options for singles are limited

Anonymous
Yeah, makes sense.

Anonymous
You have a very different system to us, I assume

Government owns much of the housing, we lease it
and apparently singles don't need space

Anonymous
Right.

Anonymous
I really dislike that but, it makes sense.

3:32 PM
so I either can buy out someone's lease (which is pricy) or buy a new build, which is built as there's demand
onnnlyyyy
it got delayed by covid
HOWEVER my apartment's prefab so it might cross fingers get done faster

Anonymous
Hopefully :D

Anonymous
Hopefully I can move soon too, lol.

Anonymous
My rage went down slightly because I finally took my girlfriends advice and stopped reading the news.

Anonymous
Hesitantly I should add..

3:34 PM
I don't think I have read the news in years

Anonymous
I feel really bad if I don't.

Anonymous
That's the issue.

I get it from my RSS feeds (which is mostly techie stuff) and people around me
@J-- why?
You'll feel bad reading it too

Anonymous
Because a lot of people (especially my age) don't care about the world.

Anonymous
They don't care about others.

3:35 PM
might as well spend the time doing something that dosen't make you feel bad

Anonymous
They don't care what things their governments are doing.

Anonymous
They just exist and "as long as it doesn't impact me fuck it".

Ours is having a small crisis :D

Anonymous
I feel if I don't read the news then I am just no better than those selfish idiots.

Anonymous
3:37 PM
But my girlfriend is kinda' right, there isn't much sense in making myself upset everyday over things I cannot control. Especially when I have the intention to leave the country.
