Good morning, my friends!
I'll be on-site the next two weeks, so I won't have as much time to hang out here, meaning the quality of conversation will likely increase by magnitudes
@RoryAlsop My mom didn't stop smoking when she got pregnant with me, but when she got a new car shortly after I was born, so it'd retain it's resell value :D

lol wow

A: Locked folder with obscure app from Sourceforge, now cannot unlock folder

grawity Despite the program claiming to use an "Encryption Library", there is no encryption in this software at all. It simply renames the folder to one of: Mode 1: Example folder.{2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0} Mode 2: Example folder.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} Mode 3: Example fold...

lmao encryption
This is hilarious.

@forest Sameeh was probably not such a crypto-nerd :D
I have good homebrew crypto stories, but they're all under NDA sadly :(

Those are the craziest.
Since you know that they're actually relied upon by some people.

To be fair, that software was from an era when IE warned you that a site used HTTPS
I'm so sad that I don't have a screenshot of it ready, but really old versions of IE actually warned you that you were opening a HTTPS website, for some reason
I really don't know what the intended use-case of that was, but it baffles me to this day

I don't remember that.
I know that there would be errors for unsupported protocols.

It was something akin to "You are about to open a secure webpage! Are you sure you want to proceed?"
Also, let me quickly spam you with yet another miniature-related picture. So far I had only @ConorMancone to annoy with them :D

miniature-related picture?

He's basically a shitposter gone president, which in itself, is a respectable achievement.
That hit the nail on the head lmao.

@forest And it's absolutely true :D
The two pictures are Warhammer miniatures I painted and photographed

Now if only we had a high-quality troll as president.
Someone who would utterly destroy the US and leave it in shambles before anyone realizes what is happening, and walk out of the office with a giant grin as it finally dawns on people.

@forest Our president used to be the head of the green party, before they yeeted him

makes lemon party joke
I miss the early 2000s. :(

6:42 AM
His only task is to represent the nation and he does that about as good as a wet sack of potatoes
Man, the early 2000s were amazing
Waking up without existential dread was the bomb

In the days of flash animations. :D

Yes, flash too!

When everything was new and exciting.

When the memes were still OG

Spending hours on the internet just looking through various collections of animations and games that ranged from silly 6 second clips to the most grotesque things imaginable.
When internet communities were young and innocent.

6:44 AM
Back then you could go on Habbo Hotel with ya boys and stand in a swastika, and it was hilarious

ikr
Because, ya know, the pool is closed.

Now you may face prison charges for commiting a hate crime

That's messed up.

Man, I miss those days where you could call someone a f***** on CSS and you'd become friends. These days, you just get your account deleted
And for what? Are people better off today than they were 20 years ago?

I wish I saved this image macro of "racism then / racism now".

6:46 AM
Everybody is so uptight and gets offended at everything.
Racism then: Black people traded as comodity. Racism now: Dreadlocks.

Yep. I got kicked in another room here for using the word "rape". And I wasn't making some sick rape joke or making fun of it, but referring to it as a horrible thing that shouldn't be trivialized.

Bizarro
Let me try that again
Reminds me of the headline "Female teacher arrested for forcing male student to have sex with her" and all the comments were like "If only there was a word for one person forcing another one to conduct sexual activities with them against their will"

loool

The world is going insane. Sometimes I wonder if my worldview is wrong, but then I look at the mainstream media and I regret nothing

I've long given up at trying to hone my worldview. Now I just do things for money as long as I'm not profiting anyone who would harm me and don't give a shit about whether or not it fits in with my moral compass. It's been a long time since the world was rosy enough that I felt like protecting it.

6:52 AM
I get you, seriously

The nice thing about computer skills is it makes it possible to make money without having to get your hands dirty as a blue collar criminal. But maybe I'm a hypocrite, because I don't help govts.

The only thing that really matters is getting kids mad on Xbox Live :D

lol

L E G E N D

I'm not much of a gamer so I don't know a whole lot about that community.

6:54 AM
Anyways, I have to go now. Time to be a white hat

I mean, not the modern gaming community at least.
aight, ttyl

The modern gaming community is fucking shit.

I have no grey hat jobs lined up right now so I get to screw around with scammers via email. :D

That's all you have to know
Good luck!
See ya

thx, cya
OH SHIT no I do have a job that I've been putting off. God dammit.

@MechMK1 <- this. I cannot even begin to explain how much people that agree with that statement pain me.

It's incredible, isn't it?
Free speech has come to mean agreeable speech.
And I'm not talking about the legal definition, but the concept.

9:39 AM
@MechMK1 let's stop engaging John on the law enforcement/legal aspects to his pentesting questions. He's asking the same questions over and over and doesn't appear to be getting closer to whatever underlying understanding that he needs. I'd prefer, actually, to edit out his legal questions and start making his new questions copies of the questions he's asked before. All his questions are answered by "get permission, follow laws, ask when in doubt".
The more he tries to drill down, the closer he gets to a purely legal question, which is off-topic.

@forest Yeah, it makes my p*ss boil.

It irritated me enough that I'm now a free speech absolutist.
And I'm amazed at the horrible arguments people come up with against free speech absolutism.
Like the whole "shouting fire in a movie theater" argument which 1) does not deal with free speech, but method of imparting the speech (for the same reason, you can't throw books at people just because the contents of said books are protected), and 2) was first used by a judge who was trying to argue for banning books (yeah yeah genetic fallacy, but it's still good to know).

10:38 AM
Right of Free Speech does not equate to a Responsibility to be Heard, which also gets confused in the topic. And Free Speech is not freedom from responsibility for what one says, another concept that gets confused.

I'm not referring to speech in the legal sense, but as a concept.

so am I

I am aware that there are exceptions to "The Right To Free Speech".

I agree with absolute free speech. I do not agree that that means that everyone must listen to someone spout off and give the speaker a pass for whatever is said.

I personally do not believe that anyone is "responsible" for what they say.

10:42 AM
why not?

But I understand that there is and should not be a right to be heard, just to speak.
Because that limits free speech. If I say "go break the law" and someone does, it should be on them for breaking the law (and for being dumb enough to listen to me telling them to do so).
The best way to fight bad speech is with more speech, not "holding someone responsible".

that's a secondary responsibility, yes, which falls into legal/ethical territory, but primary responsibilty is a different thing.

I don't believe primary responsibility for speech should be a thing in the first place.
I don't think anything anyone says should get them in (legal) trouble.

we aren't talking about legal

Are you referring to responsibility in the eye of society?
Because in that case, no one would be making them take responsibility.
After all, what is freedom from responsibility for what one says, if not a legal concept?

10:46 AM
"legal" is a form of "society making" and that's not what we are talking about, yes?

My point is that there should be nothing in place that makes it dangerous for someone to say whatever they want, and there should be nothing in place to physically prevent them from doing so.
Whether they manifest as laws or angry mobs.

let's bring this down a few conceptual levels to bypass legal, as you suggested: gossip

So negative gossip damaging someone's social standing due to things they said?

you just bumped it up a few levels again when you brought in "social standing"

Explain

10:51 AM
I'm not trying to tie things to some systemic, societal/legal construct. I'm talking about the person and speech and responsibility.

Then I might be misunderstanding what you mean by responsibility in this context.

unless you do, indeed, want to talk about legal, but I'm fine with setting that aside
Anyone speaking has an inherent responsibility for what they say as speaking is meant to affect other people and one's relationship with other people. Yelling "fire" and gossip, then can be equated on that level (legal issues aside).

The legal aspects are for the lawyers to deal with, not me.

Knowingly spreading lies, offering dangerous opinions. People are not free from the natural consequences of these things.

What natural consequences are you referring to?

10:57 AM
Let's take "yelling fire". A kid watching Moana in the theatre sees the lava monster and shouts "fire". Someone wants to create a panic and shouts "fire" in order to cause a reaction in the listeners. The speech; the words, the volume, the context, they are identical. The motivation is radically different. One intends harm, disruption.
People are impacted by words, by communication. That's the point of communication.

Yelling "fire" and communicating the word "fire" are different things. I don't think I should be able to yell that in a theater anymore than I should be able to tattoo a political manifesto on my daughter's back.

As a concept, then people must be held responible for their motivations in their speech.

Held responsible by whom?
And why? If I want to publish something out of a book stand next to my own home, I should be able to do so regardless of the contents of the book and regardless of my motivations.
I don't believe I should be held responsible for my motivations nor the contents of said book. Likewise, I should be able to publish anything on the internet (assuming I find a company willing to host it, or I host it myself), or on DVDs I distribute, or USB flash drives. If I'm distributing something under false pretenses, then perhaps I should be required to disclose what I am distributing, for example so I don't give out USB drives with malware to people who are unaware of that fact.
But if it can be represented as 1s and 0s (or whatever base you prefer), it should be free speech.

But yes, I tend to agree with you @forest I also don't think that any responsibility should be placed on the person saying stupid things more the person doing the stupid thing.

Yeah. People always have the silliest arguments. Like "zomg but what about child porn!?!?". Well... how about just make rape illegal, regardless of whether the video camera is on or off? Oh wait, it already is! Or "zomg but then people will pirate and movie stars will starve in the streets!" etc.
Criminalizing bits and bytes is the most stupid thing to come since relig- wait can I say that?
Anyway I'm very tired and a little high right now so forgive me if I'm making no sense.

Finally done with work
Up since 12 hours already, home in 2

@MechMK1 Sounds like you need some downtime! More miniature painting?

@ConorMancone I will! Did you see my recent pictures? I swear, new minis coming soon
Also, is it just me or are mobile games these days absolute trash?

@MechMK1 :) I did. Your background is looking much better too - the light box itself wasn't at all obvious in this picture

What happened to time wasters for 99 cents?
@ConorMancone I also put it on a tripod this time :D

I have a really hard time finding good mobile games these days, it makes me sad. I don't do that much game playing, usually I'll play a bit at night before I go to bed, so I'm always on the look out for something simple and mindless. It's hard to find anything that works for me
Most everything seems to be the "come back in 2 hours to get your things or pay money to get it now", and I hate that style of game

4:13 PM
@ConorMancone Me too! Making a good incremental game is so hard

I've been tempted to play king of thieves again - that one entertained me for a while

I just want something simple I can play on the train, but so many mobile games require me to play PvP or invest 100 hours to get decent items
It sucks
Not to mention all the waifu games out there so that loners can pretend to have a girlfriend. It's just sad

@MechMK1 That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, and my problem with finding a game to play
What is a waifu game?

Basically a game based on overly sexualized female characters, with the goal of having a simulated pretend-relationship with them
The characters would often make remarks about how important the player is to them, how happy they are to see them, etc...
The goal is to attract teenagers or young adults who want to be in a relationship but fail to attract any partner. The "waifu" serves as a substitution, at least in the most basic sense
It is remarkably depressing, because it's basically exploiting young men's loneliness and desire for love to make tons of money.
Some games actually label themselves "waifu simulator" or similar

Ah, I think I've seen ads for games like that. When the ad prominently features a woman with gigantic boobs and a low cut top I just move on. I didn't realize I was missing out on an entire genre of video games...
(sounds like I'm not missing out though)
