5:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek yea true

6:11 AM
(I mean, he was the second best PM we've had, and probably the third or forth best leader IMO)

6:22 AM
Who was the best then?

7:15 AM
@LucasKauffman Yo momma

@LucasKauffman: Well Goh Chok Tong, IMO
LKY was hardnosed, His son's kinda.... meh
The most effective guy in the current cabinet is the finance minister (who's unlikely to be PM, sadly enough)

7:45 AM
LKY was very Machiavelli like
But the result is there
Just curious about the political outfall of his death

Not much

His son is really not great ... at all

No, not at all
Neither are a good chunk of people he has surrounded himself with
LKY had a great team

Yep he lacks charisma, there's shit public opinion about him and he's spending a lot of state money on himself, which I don't get since they have so much money from companies

@LucasKauffman: which often make bad investments.

7:50 AM
How much was it? 134 million a year?

Ministerial salaries are kinda.. high, yeah
I don't think its that high

Obama and merkel don't even make 3% of that amount together

Also, the opposition is organising. There's going to be some consolidation, but they arn't going to be having any more walkovers ;p

It's the best paid stateman in the world :p

Pretty much

7:52 AM
Yea but I'm not really convinced by the opposition either

hmm.
Well, WP's actually a threat, which is why they've been pulling this shit on service fees and grants

What I'm afraid of is that they'll become very populist

SDP's militant liberal (if there's such a thing)
True, but the alternative is a bunch of folk in ivory towers

Non populism works best when your leadership is pragmatic. LHL isn't pragmatic at all

7:54 AM
Although if I read some of the outlets of some people like sending PR to NS reservist camps
That's really nefast for your foreign investments, and that's what the Singaporean economy is thriving on

@LucasKauffman: I'm not a big fan of the reservist system as it is.
I do think it should be a prerequisite for a male to stand for political office or abolished

But I understand that some Singaporeans don't like foreigners, if you look how the system is built, they're almost second rank compared to the PRs. They enjoy almost the same benefits yet don't have the same duties.

@LucasKauffman I think its the general feeling of unhappiness of having your life put on hold for 2 years.
Oh, there's a deeper issue with foreigners.

@JourneymanGeek yea, some of the stuff I see foreigners do is really... wtf
of course not all of them

In my dad's time, the people who came in here wanted a better life and to stay
A lot of folks are decent, but some arn't quite as well assimilated as we'd like.

7:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek western or eastern?
or both?

(and heh, I'm the only local local in my department)
Fun fact? Local chinese often complain about mainland chinese. Local indians (who are tamil) have issues with some new indian immegrants.

@JourneymanGeek yea I noticed :p

And well, its going fast, for the wrong reasons. We want GDP growth at any cost, over filling gaps in our skills.
(and heh, everyone I work with actually has unique skills)

@JourneymanGeek that's the main issue I think, you attract foreign talent, but that attraction of foreign tallent should be leveraged to increase local talent

@LucasKauffman: We want forign talent for gdp growth not for actual, long term, sustainable skills

8:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek nope I noticed you get kicked out of SG as a PR once you retire IIRC :P

lol. USUALLY you get the option of citizenship by then

@JourneymanGeek yea I know, the only thing that sucks is that double passports aren't allowed

Heh. Yeah.

cause me and the misses really need to start thinking next year what we want to do
if it's europe or SG

@LucasKauffman Ow. tough choice.
Wait, you're based here?

8:03 AM
nope now in Europe
She's studying here atm

ahh. For me, it was between a singaporean and sri lankan passport. Easy choice ;p

Singaporean passport gives more access more easily, plus the common wealth system is great

Tradeoff for you being the ability to work anywhere in europe.

that's why I'd hate to give up my EU passport, I can travel without visa, so easy
but yea, I wouldn't mind working there a few years, the weather's a bit better, albeit I sweat like a pig

lol. So do we. LKY did consider the Airconditioner the greatest invention of modern times ;p

8:09 AM
it is

hi

(and damn it, they're playing shitty early 90s love ballads on radio. And occationally dedicating them to the late old man. Which is creepy)

@JourneymanGeek hey I thought the radio stations there generally played quite good music :p
take my breath away?

@LucasKauffman: Fixing a broken heart. I'm pretty sure they played 25 minutes too late. Which was probably 4-5 minutes too long

@LucasKauffman I wouldn't cope. Scotland is too warm for me most of the year

8:13 AM
@RoryAlsop you'd probably die there then, even I almost died there a few times...
like it's humid hot
and hten you see these people in long jeans and long sleeves
and I'm like WTF

Yesterday they were playing elevator instumental stuff.
Oh finally, something I like.

RT @winocm: An alternate universe where TLS stands for “total loss of security” and SSL “sneaky sockets layer”

mmmm
alcohol tax is actually not that expensive when importing beer I guess
Duty = Total quantity in litres x $60 x alcohol strength in percentage

heh. NOT something to read at work, too damn funny

I might want bohemian rhapsody at my funeral
would be a funny touch

8:45 AM
@RoryAlsop more snow on the hills here again today..
Morning All
@LucasKauffman nah at your funeral you should make everyone sit through Llamas with hats

@RоryMcCune Morning. Iced up car this morning - but it's beautiful. Transitioned to summer clothing today. My winder coat is in the attic. It's getting too warm for long sleeves
@RоryMcCune but slowed down 10% to sound extra weeeeird Caaaarrrrrrlllllll

@RoryAlsop yeah during the day it's been hotting up (was 18 in the sun the other day) but still frosty at night
@RoryAlsop ooh yeah, then as you slide off, that end-music distorted

8:58 AM
@RoryAlsop "It's 1° C, must be summer!"

9:46 AM
@RoryAlsop how did you survive australia again :P?

10:29 AM
@LucasKauffman Melbourne isn't that hot a lot of the time
it reminded me of London
except smaller

really?
smelly and rainy?

@LucasKauffman yeah pretty much
I wasn't there in their summer tho'
Sydney was nicer

@LucasKauffman Perth is quite mellow, Melbourne is like the UK, only rainier, Sydney was okay, Brisbane and the Gold Coast were crazy hot...however as I just wore surf shorts there I coped. I also hadn't grown as much thermal insulation at that point
Oh, and we were still in the ice age
#inb4

@RoryAlsop ah yes termal insulation
I should loose some of that :(

vessel.com <-- new youtube competitor giving away 1 year free access for sign-up over the next 3 days (CC @AviD as they have College humour as a channel)

10:42 AM
@RоryMcCune I dont get it. what benefit do they offer over youtube, other than the privilege of giving them money?

@RоryMcCune hang on - 1 year free implies a paid model after that

@AviD no ads
@RoryAlsop yeah the pitch is (I think) pay instead of ads

@RoryAlsop "ONLY $2.99 A MONTH!!"
@RоryMcCune well

kinda like what Patreon is doing
also I'm guessing the theory is money == higher quality content

well hell, I'll sign up, even though I likely will never see them again - but at least it will help them get a ridiculous amount of VC funding for a pointless site, so I'm in.

10:44 AM
personally if it has good content, the creators actually get a decent chunk of it and it's not extortionate I'd subscribe
I spend about $10/month on backing some webcomics and vid creators on patreon already

@RоryMcCune oh - and 'competitor to youtube' = brave business model

@RоryMcCune ssshuuuurrrre

@AviD yeah that's my thinking, I lose nothing trying it out and I kind of prefer the model to the horrible ads model on youtube
@AviD yeah it may of course not work

yeah - maybe later when I get home

@RoryAlsop LOL which browser was that?

10:47 AM
standard $LARGEBANK browser :-)

@RoryAlsop well can't blame the site too much then :o)

OMG They make it damn difficult to sign up and use the damn thing
FIRST YOU MUST CHOOSE YOUR CATEGORIES
AND YOUR FAVORITES
YOU HAVE CHOSEN..... WISELY

@AviD you could have chosen three in the time it took you to type that rant :op

but whyyyyyy
and sorry, no there are not 3 that I would care to favorite

@AviD Indiana Jones only had to chose one.

10:50 AM
@AviD they have college humor, funny or die and buzzfeed, shurley that's most of your video surfing needs right there!

@M'vy right??
@RоryMcCune only seen CH

@AviD FWIW =3 is generally funny

@RоryMcCune I'm surprised @Simon doesn't use that ASCII version to represent his D

and no search? FAIL

@AviD hamburger menu on the top left shows side bar and search

10:54 AM
yeah but that wasnt there when I was being coerced to select my favorites
ok I gave up trying to find any actual content, instead of just links to "Hmm we didnt find anything, want something else?"

@AviD on a different note did you see that MS have the HP Stream 7 going for pretty cheap at the moment

saw you posted that, yes
but 7 inches? Thats big for a phone.
AND SMALL FOR A TABLET

@AviD indeed
will be interesting to see if it's any use, but as it's cheaper than the office365 sub that comes with it.

I think my daughter has a 7 inch android minitablet.
@RоryMcCune heh yeah, might be worth buying just for that.

@AviD yeah in the UK that sub is 5.99/month and I got the tablet for 49.99, so basically a £30 discount on office365 and free tablet

11:09 AM
@RoryAlsop: heh, The streams are crazy cheap.
Did it come with a windows store voucher as well?
(my netbook came with one. I still have no idea what to use it for ;p)

11:40 AM
@RoryAlsop 8====D

@Simon ah, yes - hello :-)

Hello!

11:57 AM
Actually, my problem's not medical. It's psychological.

@Flyk you don't say, would have never guessed that :o
@RоryMcCune you mean adblockplus but then a per month payment thingie?
@RoryAlsop $largebank doesn't allow chrome or firefox?

@LucasKauffman sure that's what I do, don't like ads so I block 'em but then I give cash to the people making the content 'cause I like it and would like them to make more :)

@RоryMcCune or that's what you are tricked into thinking

@LucasKauffman tricked into thinking I like the content?
s'a good trick

@RоryMcCune that they receive the money :p

12:09 PM
@LucasKauffman ahh I use Patreon, so I'm definite that they do

although it's a great business model, I want to have a company like that as well, I basically pass on a transaction and take a small percentage of that transaction

Patreon take a cut (30% IIRC) but the rest goes to the creator

@RоryMcCune 30%???
holyfuk
I'd have guessed anywhere between 3 and 10% to be fair
30 is a shitload

@LucasKauffman ah no I'm wrong (that must've been some other service) it's 5%

anyway it still leaves a hella more for the creator than most other options

12:12 PM
I remember now it was Apple that takes 30%

@RоryMcCune well that's only fair, Apple invented the internet.

@AviD exactly I contribute to webcomics like Gunnerkrigg and Questionable content and they get a fair bit of cash from it now, makes it sustainable for them

@RоryMcCune hmm. Would Patreon (or something like that) work for coders?
e.g. open source projects

maybe we should build our own
ask 4%
and donate it to open source projects

@AviD I've seen various things like feature bounties and tipping systems, but I'm not sure people really value good code in that way..
you'd hope they would

12:16 PM
@RоryMcCune hmm doesnt have to be GOOD code
could be a good project they like, even if the code is totally sucky

@AviD 'cause money?

btw speaking of which, I remembered why I abhor reviewing code for large corps
its just that I hate seeing so much bad code

@AviD it's kay it's kay

@AviD indeed, the lots of small monthly donations model is good though, as it means you can give a small amount personally (e.g. $1/month) and have it add up to a sustatainable income reasonably easily

and so much money poured down the drain for the bad code

12:18 PM
@AviD I corporate your mom.

@RоryMcCune or extra income

@RоryMcCune okay hang on hang on, do you think this could really work?
shall we startup it up? Who's in?
NOT WRITING IN HIPSTER LANGS

it would be good if pateron expanded it's audience to coders instead of making yet another money service

@AviD I'M IN, WOOHOO! I'M GONNA CLEAN ALL YOUR TOILETS!

@AviD well there's some companies in the market already, so would need to establish if they work or not and what they're doing wrong if not. So for example pledgie.com

12:20 PM
oh nice, actually some opensource projects on there already
rvm, jquery-validation

not to say it couldn't work as other people had patreons model before they did and patreon are still doing well

@AviD I'm in

@ThomasPornin Are you ready to let the winter go as much as I am?

@AviD Any language, as long as it's python

json.net, nhibernate, fluent, some others
@LucasKauffman okay, .NET?
@LucasKauffman no good, then Big4 would own it

12:23 PM
@AviD nope, I don't have that clause in my contract ;)

@Simon Winter is just winter; I don't mind it.

@RоryMcCune actually it was more about having such a mechanism then really committing to it

It will be back anyway.

@Simon WINTER IS COMING
@ThomasPornin WINTER IS COMING BACK.

12:23 PM
heh, damn

@AviD how are you getting access to GoT in Israel?

@ThomasPornin Bleh I know that, but I miss the sunny car rides wearing only a t-shirt.

@RоryMcCune they don't have GoT in Israel?

@AviD NO NO NO NO NO NO

@RоryMcCune this thing called "the internet"

12:24 PM
@LucasKauffman dunno, that was my question, I guess most countries will have it somehow

you may have heard of it, Apple invented it

@AviD har de har har
I meant which service

@AviD The Internet?

HBO streaming, a 3rd party
etc

@RоryMcCune ah, whatever random streaming sites have it
dont have the next season yet though
my 9yr old was practicing playing the theme song from GoT on his trumpet

12:27 PM
Was he/she practicing getting naked too, since that's all they seem to do on the show?

he didnt know it was from a show. just knew the tune.

You're a tune.

talking octocat is adorable. is it bad my first thought was "how sanitized is that parameter?"

@Ohnana Welcome to our world.

too much code review

@Ohnana return type is text/plain so probably not too bad

@RоryMcCune looks like it's piped to the fortune command
giving it ";;" is equivalent to a blank parameter

12:54 PM
^that's what I call a speed test

Thats not enough…

there's a community fibre project in the north of England
that's one of their subscribers link speed

ooooh shit

I wonder if it's actually affecting house prices in the area
that sort of thing would actually get developers to start investing in it

Only if estate agents KNOW what the internet is…

12:56 PM
also I'm doing a "simple" hacking challenge and I've started at it for 10 minutes

@BarryCarlyon right move have started putting it on all their house ads

i don't know if I need coffee or if I'm a fcking idiot

it's not the most accurate but at least it's now a factor

@RоryMcCune dang… :-P

ohnuhnuh pls be nice to yourself

@Ohnana could be both, of course.

1:55 PM
@LucasKauffman well - yes, Chrome is an option, but with all javascript disabled etc
that's one of the ones I pay towards

@RoryAlsop huh, goes to show there's always something new on the Internet, I've never seen that page before...

@RоryMcCune Terrible old school page, but some of the projects are excellent. I use a few of the tools collected there

@RoryAlsop they need a web designber

What's a designber?

@Ohnana lol
@Simon it's like a badgber
only different

2:03 PM
o

@Simon whatever man

@Ohnana Don't be like that, you know we're best friends.
And best friends poke each others all the time.

@Simon i'll tell your mom the next time i see her. she'll be glad to hear you finally have a friend
:U

pls

@Simon spl

2:04 PM
svp

@RoryAlsop That's how I spelled it when I tried to spell it backwards, right?

@Simon I think so, yes :-)

I'm such a donut.

@RoryAlsop excellent
@RоryMcCune I dont think that page looks "new"
@RoryAlsop they could use with a designer from like this decade

@AviD new to me :op or perhaps they're just retro-hipsters

2:08 PM
@RоryMcCune hehe, retrohipsters. I like that.

@RоryMcCune Wow, have they got serious about broadband now? When I lived in north of UK, if you got BT Infinity, you got ~80 Mbps down, ~20 up. If lucky. If not... 2.

@Simon best friends poke each other's what??

@AviD Donuts, their donuts.

I could pay for g/bit here... but, it's too expensive and 200Mb/s is enough, really.

@Simon oh didnt know candaians are into that sorta thing.

2:11 PM
@Gone that's B4RN they're a community broadband lot working in a rural area that BT don't cover

you and and your crazy canadian sex acts.

Yeah, every one of us.

@RoryAlsop ah no websites work then I guess
@Gone when I was still in college, our student organization's lab had such a fast connectivity it maxed out my 7200rpm disk drive when dowloading ubuntu ISOs

@Simon what does your donut say about that?
@AviD are they like jeggings?

@RoryAlsop She says: "pa pa pa pow pa pa pa pow pa pa pa pow"

2:15 PM
@Simon are you attempting to imply that your doughnut is a fox?

Me? Noooo!

2:31 PM
Canada has developed an arsenal of cyberweapons capable of stealing data, destroying adversaries’ infrastructure. http://interc.pt/1Cg9JWZ
^naughty canada types!

Then apologising.
3

@RоryMcCune We're sorry we destroyed your country?
@RоryMcCune Cyber Maple Syrup?
Cyber Donut?

@LucasKauffman I was thinking that they must've weaponised bears!

pls all, don't make me use the cyberweapons.

@RоryMcCune Yeah. Unfortunately that's a problem for rural communities they really need to fix in the UK.
@RоryMcCune If they manage to weaponize Thomas, we're all goners.

2:34 PM
@Gone tell me about it
@Gone Thomas is pre-weaponised

user image
2
@Gone Who needs to break crypto when you've got thomas pornin? He can factor primes faster than all quantum computers in the world together

@LucasKauffman this is equivalent to the Chuck Norris list, right?

@LucasKauffman Also he doesn't know what the discrete logarithm problem is. He only knows the discrete logarithm solution.

@RoryAlsop we should make such a site
I should make such a website
3
I can have a look at it tonight

:-)

2:39 PM
@LucasKauffman You need a super clever domain name, that's gonna be the hardest part.

@LucasKauffman so dns entry www.askthomaspornin.com CNAME security.stackexchange.com ?

@Simon easy. thomasporn.in

and http 301 www.hasthomasworkedoutthelatesttlsbugyet.com security.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/tls

@RоryMcCune Nothing about "bear"?

@Simon well a bear pun would be the other option

Adi
2:48 PM
Anybody else thinks that this is not a great idea? ibiblio.org/theeuro/InformationWebsite.htm?http://jsfiddle.net
The website works that way. It includes pages in the frame and I don't think it's intended to load arbitrary stuff

@RоryMcCune thomasporn.in is 9.09 eur
so tempted
bear@thomasporn.in
smallbear@thomasporn.in

How about thomas.porn?

llama@thomasporn.in

@TerryChia hahahahaha

thomasbear.porn
