@AviD s/GIT/Git/ ¬¬

1:08 AM
Arguing with people on the Internet makes me tired. That is all.

@Xander Tell me about it. I was arguing with people on HN last night that easter eggs in complex software isn't a good idea.

@TerryChia LOL. This is one of the reasons that I do not use HN. Or Reddit. Or read comments on any of the Internet anywhere, other than SE. It's enough that I've had to argue with one sec.SE user about two of his answers in the last two days. I can't handle any more.

I'm not sure to which message reply... and replying to both seems too annoying

@Braiam I love that joke. That's not really a problem for me though. I don't really feel the need to win, or have the last word. I'm just trying to offer a bit of constructive criticism.

A: Online Shopping password keylogger risk

funny storyI think maybe you are worried about so much. Usually, if you are shopping online, it is not possible for you to enter any data into their site except username and password that you use them to purchase goods and your card to pay for them. However, there are some people using legal and benefited s...

2 hours later…
4:06 AM

@StackExchange "absently check smaller device"? Psh! Multiple tabs have the same effect.

4:43 AM
@StackExchange Books? Is that the thing you read on your Kindle?

@TerryChia I think I once read that books were once used to spread the written language. Something about stone tablets bound together with strips of cured leather.

4 hours later…
8:58 AM
@DavidFreitag What? Have you been reading my diary again?

@RoryAlsop And I get a spray of spit each time I make a reference to your age!

@TildalWave heh heh. Must be my immediate post-coffee and cheese toastie mood :-)

I think I know what influenced last XKCD. There was this study published that kids don't learn as much from Kindles and alike as they do by reading proper books. Well, hardly surprising actually. I always thought I read a lot of books in my life, but apparently I scrolled through even more of them :)

@TildalWave I'm delighted that my kids are making a good start on the few thousand books (physical ones) I have in my music room/computer room/library/office

Excellent!

9:10 AM
@RoryAlsop "Karl Marx, das kapital"
and they never wanted to read a book again
@RoryAlsop I've been monitoring your linkedin profile, but HR is yet to appear :(

@LucasKauffman Oh come on, it's not that bad!

@LucasKauffman I clicked on the 'okay' button

@TildalWave I like ebooks for fiction and the likes but I definitely prefer paper books for technical books.

I mean, it's a bit much for the kids ... but it could be worse.

@LucasKauffman That book is not the worst. Gormenghast is the worst.

9:12 AM
@LucasKauffman Maybe more people need to endorse him for that. ;)

@TerryChia lemme check again - I did click it, honest. Thought it would be funny. I disallowed 'middle management' though
:-)

@RoryAlsop "Rory Alsop, Rock God, HR Manager" Nice on a business card.

@LucasKauffman it's actually not that bad of a book, as long as you realize it has no real world application that doesn't come with even more grave consequences than what it's attacking as flawed in the preface

@TildalWave It's heavy for kids though. The worst book ever to read is Ullyses
@TildalWave Comunism works if there is no corruption

@LucasKauffman Which is why it will never work.

9:15 AM
@TerryChia ahhhh - it's the limit of 50 skills
hmmm - what do I drop to get HR in there...

@LucasKauffman it works as a scribble on a paper napkin ... then you wipe your mouth with it, and fold or crunch before throwing in a recycling bin ... sadly, there was half the world that took it seriously

@RoryAlsop Yeah, Information Security can go.

@TerryChia that's not ncie

@LucasKauffman I'm not being serious. :P

@RoryAlsop Proof that LinkedIn is limiting one's skills!

9:18 AM
I've deleted 5 of my skills...it doesn't automagically add in the ones that appeared while I was at 50.
@TerryChia agreed. Minus the HR manager bit

@RoryAlsop Replace it with "Middle Management"?

:-(

@RoryAlsop You shouldn't have brought that up. :P

I was never very good at middle management. senior management is much more fun as you get useful things like budget and accountability
and the ability to shout at senior folks
(without getting fired)

@RoryAlsop PHB?

9:20 AM
@RoryAlsop Senior as in old, or senior as in senior?
I suppose you qualify for both. #burn

@LucasKauffman I'm more fuzzy haired

1 hour later…
10:28 AM
@RoryAlsop I've been known for shouting at my boss, still not fired.

@Arperum that's quite common in loud industrial environments :P

10:48 AM
@TildalWave And in a quiet office in an IT company?

1 hour later…
12:02 PM
@Arperum That's what I like to call a career limiting move :p

@LucasKauffman Right, but you work at a company where you have to ask permission to visit the bathroom. :P

@TerryChia not really

Jul 1 at 8:00, by Lucas Kauffman
@AviD It's still alright, we aren't that bad, I can go 3 times a day without asking

all but actually, we get a lot of freedom. But yelling in general at anyone isn't a smart thing. Especially if that person decides your wage and career opportunities ;)

@LucasKauffman That's not relevant when I'm mocking you.

12:14 PM
@LucasKauffman I'd be curious as to what promotion they could give me, aside from me there is one other programmer, and then the two owners of the company. If they fire me, they have a problem, I know I can get a new job in no time.

@Arperum so why don't you :p?

They can't really promote me, I'm sorta looking into getting someplace else to start, but not all that active.
I just bought a house and I'm really lazy and have a shitton of random stuff related to said house on my head already.
@LucasKauffman But if you have an open spot for a programmer, just let me know (you're from Belgium too IIRC)

@Arperum aren't there plenty of consulting firms like Real Dolmen where you could go?
@Arperum We don't do programming :(

@LucasKauffman I could go and have a look, but then again, I currently can still save up some money, can go to work in whatever clothes I want (I really don't like suits) and I'm lazy >_<

@Arperum suits our nice if you have a good one

12:24 PM
@Kisunminttu This could be done.

(I'm currently sitting at a client in a t-shirt with the logo of a metal-festival on it. I've been in meetings with some senior management guys from a multinational in a bandshirt.

On a side note, I've been dealing with gastroenteritis for the past few days, oh joy.

@LucasKauffman Then I need to find someplace where I can get a good one.

@Arperum I got one tailored

@Simon Too much #yolo?

12:27 PM
I might do something like that at some point, but right now, it works like this. I'm happy, and once I got the house stuff somewhat sorted (like new electricity done, new roof done, kitchen renewed, new shower/bathroom stuff) then I'll get to actively looking for something new.

@TerryChia Bleh, maybe an overdose of #yolo, yeah.

12:39 PM
@Arperum me too :-)

@RoryAlsop The difference being that you are the senior management guy in your case.

@TerryChia nah, there's always layers
like an onion

Someone more senior than @RoryAlsop?
I'm referring to age of course. ;)

That's Terry himself on that picture, actually.

@TerryChia Probably some fossil decoration.

12:45 PM
@Simon That's racist.

:D

Impossibru is a cocktail with Irn-Bru, Jaegermeister and Absinthe
true story

1:01 PM
DODODODODODODODONUTS

@RoryAlsop Is it any good? That sounds a bit adventurous for me.

@Xander He probably evolved over time to drink such things.

1:52 PM
@Xander it would be better without the Jaegermeister and Absinthe :-)

@RoryAlsop Ha ha, yeah, that sounds about right to me. :-)

Get a room you two.

@Simon This is our room. How did you get in?
;-P

There's no door you donut.

There's no donut, you...wait...what?

1:55 PM
Yeah you know it, you're a door.

@Simon You think so, huh? (Waiting for you to be kicked right back through it.)

@Xander That's not a door. That's an endless pit.

The endless pit of love <3

@Simon Sounds like a song by Sisters of Mercy or something

So did John McAfee already do the ALS ICE bucket challenge?

2:01 PM
@TerryChia heh

@TerryChia He would use a different kind of "ice".

@FEichinger I think that's the idea.

@RoryAlsop I bet they were singing before I was born.

hey @TerryChia
y'know in Gnome, is it possible to get it to display all open apps in the taskbar?

@deed02392 Dunno. My GUI needs entirely revolve around alt tabbing between my browser, my editor and VLC.

2:04 PM
maybe I need to embrace alt+tab more then
it's just kind of annoying when I have a lot of windows open that I have to whack the mouse into the corner to choose another window

EMBRACE THE #YOLO

@deed02392 Win key works.

ah that's handy too

@Simon Where's @AviD when you need him?

fount of knowledge you are @TerryChia

2:06 PM
@FEichinger Probably sitting in a hip cafe sipping on a latte and typing on his #shinymac.

Does he own a Mac now?

@Simon probably broke up before you were born

@RoryAlsop Haha, even better.

@Simon owns a mac, is a hipster

Oh big time.

2:08 PM
Oh, @AviD - I meant to say: Happy Birthday! Hadn't realised until I watched your ice bucket challenge for the second or third time
My kids were very impressed you were wearing a Sec.SE t-shirt

hey @RoryAlsop - why you no respond to my question about that post on SD
need a tie breaker

So, I got to watch some of Brokeback Mountain yesterday for the first time and I finally understood why women love that movie. Of course it's a forbidden love story about 2 dudes, of course.

@AJHenderson will pop over there now. Sorry. Visibility is tricky while at work - I fit things in around delivering the actual day job
@Simon and women like that?

@RoryAlsop It's weird, isn't it?

@AJHenderson Hmm - 'sound reinforcement' as a term is new to me. Give me a minute to figure it out

2:15 PM
live sound
as opposed to recording

You're a live sound.

@Simon that isn't an insult

Us, Canadians, find it very hard to insult others.

@Simon You just have to show people your face.

@TerryChia oooh, burn
(that's the correct usage, right?)

2:18 PM
@TerryChia Yes, it insults them because they immediately think that they are ugly when they see my beautiful visage.

@Simon get you with your long words

@RoryAlsop Well, almost. To be really hipster you need to make #burn a hashtag.

:D

@AJHenderson Sorry - I'm in agreement with you

@Simon Does "beautiful" mean something different in Canada?

2:20 PM
@TerryChia Yes, it means "cold" like every other word.

@Simon hahahaha

@RoryAlsop can you comment back to my post in the SD mod room

2 hours later…
4:07 PM
+1 for those +1 posts on Information Security Meta :) just read it, it's almost cute

wat

yeah, I lol'd at that
I was gonna downvote it, but then I thought an upvote would be more appropriate

@Polynomial You're coming back from the dead just like that?

11
Q: Why do people keep putting "+1 for .... " in the comments?

Matthew PetersIt seems more and more people are spamming the comment area with a "+1 for [what you just said that I agree with]" Is this proper form? If not, could we add an explicit description of not to do this?

I've never been dead.
well, once

4:09 PM
@Polynomial hehe exactly

@TildalWave Ah yeah, I did read it.

frankly, and I probably said that many times already, we're far too anal about comments on Stack Exchange (including me, because I was trained to be) ... OK so they do sometimes gather and distract by sheer number of them, but they only display top 5 or something unless you click on "show more"

Personally, I like turtles.

I like trains.

bigger problem is for beta sites where "nearly an answer" in the comments might discourage others in posting a proper one

4:14 PM
@DavidFreitag +1 for trains.

and even that is only relevant because of site stats ... so hardly at all

There should be a way to vote to transform a comment into an answer

indeed, or at least flag so mods can do it ... yet we can't

Or a cake into a donut.

@TildalWave Go nag shog about it?

4:16 PM
I like C̵̷̨̕T̸̀͢͡҉H͏͟Ų̶͠Ļ̵̀͟H̸̛́͡Ù̧

@Simon All you need is a large spade drill and a pressure cooker to do that

so you end up adding YET ANOTHER COMMENT asking it the author of the previous one would kindly post that as an answer :))
@TerryChia I totally misread that at first
go shag ...

Because of the Ice Bucket Challenge, the ALS Association had a 2420% increase in donations. From $2.2m last year to $53.3m this year (so far)

Go shag shog? Say that ten times fast...

4:17 PM
@DavidFreitag That sounds exhausting.

@TildalWave Yeah... that's a clear sign you have been spending too much time in here.

The Internet is doing something good

28 secs ago, by Simon
@DavidFreitag That sounds exhausting.

@TerryChia it's OK it makes me laugh :)

@Adnan And then you have assholes who complain because people are wasting water.

4:19 PM
@Simon The water "wasted" with each one of those videos is hardly comparable to the amount used by people in showers, baths, cleaning cars, etc. everyday.

@Adnan That is exactly what I said too when I first heard that stupidity.

@Simon They have to find something to complain about.

@DavidFreitag It does sound like it, yeah.

@DavidFreitag they're a waste of water then

@TildalWave Lets get a microwave and put them in it. If they hate wasting water they wouldn't mind the water within themselves being vaporized.

4:25 PM
@DavidFreitag I was thinking more like putting a bag over their heads so they don't waste water on each breath they make

@DavidFreitag Daddy?
2

@DavidFreitag I'll check it out later, I need peace in ma earz.

2 hours later…
6:01 PM
Dude the sparkfun mobile site is super broken. :[

WEEKEND IS ABOUT TO BEGIN

@LucasKauffman Last weekend before the semester begins :[

You're a semester.

6:44 PM
Giggity.

7:09 PM
finally home

8:04 PM
I'm about to leave the coffee shop and go home.

@ScottPack Are you one of those people who sits around a Starbucks with a laptop for hours?

8:31 PM
wow, that must have been quite the user purge 2 days ago
lost 115 rep in one go

8:42 PM
@AJHenderson On this site?

9:05 PM
@Xander yeah

I love ninja bidding on eBay

@DavidFreitag I always use gixen.com

@LucasKauffman Nah I love the huge adrenaline rush of screwing someone on the internet over.
I'm a terrible person.

9:41 PM
@DavidFreitag I still don't understand why eBay allows sniping. It's just a bizarre way to to run an auction. Late bids should extend the auction.

@Xander They do. Anything past ten seconds resets to ten seconds.
It's just that you can't single-click bid, so the bidding past ten seconds doesn't usually last long.

@DavidFreitag Ah, interesting. Shows that I haven't been on for awhile, I guess. That didn't use to be the case. Still seems to be a bit of a narrow window though. It should extend it by at least a minute, I'd think.

With their scripts loading and latency and all that jazz they essentially leave each person actively watching one last chance to bid past ten seconds.
They also made it so that no matter how high you bid the only actual bid that gets set is only 50 cents above the highest bid

I hate anonymous edits. Just rejected a suggested edit from anonymous that should be a comment instead, and, now it's been resubmitted. Same edit, anonymous user. Such a useless feature.

2 hours later…
11:44 PM
...Such a good evening. Whisky tasting...
Mmmm - too many whiskies
not nough sanity
