2:00 PM
@AviD It doesn't do diffs at all on binaries IIRC.

binaries are bad for version control.

Each previous version of the binary data gets stored in .git/ which balloons the size of the repo.

I guess I'll stick with using my google drive/dropbox/one drive solution then

@FEichinger I hear perforce (or was it another one?) actually works great with binaries.

@TerryChia I actually write JS at home to populate my github account, and JS is easy to do on the side.

2:01 PM
That's why many game devs use it.

Actually, @kalina, you of all people should know this ...

Actually, @FEichinger, you of all people should know I stopped using Stack Exchange sites with literally the exception of this chat room
unless of course, you haven't been paying any attention

@kalina sigh I tried. I failed. I leave.

in which case, what were you thinking of while we were c hatting?
Don't say boobs, even if it's a joke and you're just after stars...

@Xander YOU WANNA FIGHT?

2:04 PM
@FEichinger I'm basically writing python and C all the time now. I don't have a job though, just open source stuff.

@kalina I could now start an argument about how it has been sooooo long since we talked privately, but unlike you, I'm not bored enough to do that just for the sake of it. And I actually am leaving. Gotta run.

yeah, you'd better.

@TerryChia And that's how your gonna land a sick job though, just build a portfolio with open source projects and you're all set.

@FEichinger the fact you think that you could argue with me is soooooooooooo funny.

@TerryChia I don't do an awful lot of desktop apps, so most of it is web programming. Which would bring us back to a previous argument. To which I point at the second half of my last message.
@kalina I could try! And then give up because you'd win anyway.

2:06 PM
@Simon To be honest, I have absolutely zero interest in getting a job as a developer unless it's for open source stuff.

@TerryChia What kind of job are you looking for then?

@FEichinger I do zero desktop apps and zero web programming. Mostly libraries.

@Simon he just told you, he's after open sauce

o

@Simon Security researcher/pen tester is the plan currently. We'll see how it goes in the future.

2:07 PM
@kalina YOU WERE WRONG YOU DONUT.
@TerryChia That'd be awesome.

@Simon I AM NEVER WRONG

@TerryChia Yes, but if I were to work on libraries remotely relevant to me, it'd be the PHP core. FUCK. THAT.
2

AND I'M NOT A DONUT

@FEichinger Heh, there are tons of PHP libraries that needs help.

@FEichinger solution: re-evaluate your life.

2:08 PM
I'm trying to get into contributing to python core but it's tough. The codebase is rather complex.

@TerryChia Everything PHP needs help.

Everybody who uses PHP needs help.

Actually, I think the reason I like working on libraries is that I hate designing interfaces.

@TerryChia I just buy/get mine

Which reminds me, I should save money for IPC.

2:11 PM
@StackExchange The assessment stated relies on a false premise - that "average intelligence" is above "stupid".

@Iszi You do realize that the bot can't reply you? ;)

Anyway, seriously, gotta run. Laters.

@TerryChia Yes. However, my message would have been entirely out of context by now without that link.

@Simon Ok, I guess. Guns or knives?

@Xander How about guns that shoot knives?

2:14 PM
@Iszi Ooooo....Best of both worlds!

@TerryChia what are you talking about? A good library is ALL about the interfaces!

@AviD Okok, GUI.

@Iszi And dogs with bees in their mouths, and when they bark they shoot bees

@LucasKauffman Ha ha. Nice.

2:17 PM
@TerryChia ah yeah, thats different. but then backends dont do GUI, either.
@RoryAlsop T-Rexes flying F-16s!
@RoryAlsop you involved with Metaltek's facebooking?

@AviD I can't get to that just now, but is it the whale one? Usually Erik is the one who posts the really odd/mental stuff

@RoryAlsop yeah

I usually post useful things, like gig news etc
@AviD Erik is a true mental

@AviD If we're going that route, why not this?

But I did laugh at that one

2:20 PM

@Iszi yes, always a classic. But mine was Calvin, you should have known that.

@AviD Keep up with the times old man. For that matter, I probably should have used this instead...

sorry, T-Rexes and F-15s still win.

T-Rexes never existed
God created the world in 6 days and on the 7th day he rested
Science is a lie
The non-believers will be punished come judgement day
I literally have tears of laughter streaming down my face

"figuratively"

2:31 PM
no
literally
I just had to dry my eyes

@Iszi oh - that was an awesomely bad film. Like MegaOctopus vs RoboShark (or something)

@RoryAlsop Still haven't bothered to see it myself. And they're already making a sequel.

@kalina Is it ChrisTline that does the wonderful satirical religious stuff?
@Iszi It's one the wife and I watched after too many gins one evening as we couldn't be bothered changing it over. It works on the 'so bad it's good' scale. But I wouldn't watch a sequel
Like most sci-fi channel fare, it was terribly acted, with bad cgi

@AviD Huh. Except for that's an F-15, not an F-16. I guess Watterson wasn't up on his military hardware.

@Xander or maybe I was confused, and it was F-15
or maybe you were confused, and misread what I wrote

2:40 PM
@Avid, ah, the comic called it an F-14, and additional analysis shows it to be something in between an F-14 and a F-15. knowyourmeme.com/memes/t-rex-jet He should have gone with an F-16. It would have been easier to draw.

@Xander F22
more squares

@LucasKauffman Didn't exist when C&H was being drawn.

@Xander well, I'm sure they would need to adapt it to T-Rex's unique physiology.

@AviD This is true.

@Xander So, imagine if Watterson did use one then.

2:48 PM
@Xander I'm glad someone was more of an aeroplane geek than me :-)
Oh - did I mention here, while at Download Festival, we had an Antonov AN-225 Mriya take off right overhead! First time I have seen one in the air. What a beast.
this was the 6 engined super antonov version

@RoryAlsop how was it overhead, before it took off?
this makes no sense.
Unless.... THE LAWS OF PHYSICS DO NOT APPLY IN SCOTLAND!
GRAVITY ONLY WORKS SOUTH OF THE WALL

@RoryAlsop I saw one doing "acrobatics" (within the range of the possible for that thing) at Le Bourget in 1987. The wheels were out -- it has a lot of them.

@RoryAlsop ooorrrrr the hellicarrier was around....

@RoryAlsop TThere is only one AN-225 :p

Mmh, Wikipedia tells me that the first flight of the An-225 was on 1988

2:52 PM
the other one built was scraped for parts
@ThomasPornin yep it was built to support the Buran (the Russian version of the space shuttle)

So either I was at the 1989 edition of Le Bourget, or what I saw was another huge Antonov.

@ThomasPornin @ThomasPornin is the Doctor!
no wait, @RoryAlsop is the Doctor.

@ThomasPornin AN225 was derived from the AN-124 which is a "smaller" and has 4 engines

@ThomasPornin is the Doctor's Companion!

@AviD this was near Northampton - ie Englandshire

2:53 PM
@ThomasPornin I'm sure you've seen many a huge Antonov. But please, keep that to yourself.
4

@ThomasPornin It's still actively used for transport and one of the cheaper solutions for military transport compared to its American counterpart, the C5 Galaxy

@AviD That would explain why claims of his age fluctuate wildly in this room, yet are still always in the range of "really frickin' old".

@Iszi Half of the English language can be double-understood as some innuendo. And I am not sure about the other half.
2

@ThomasPornin And that's just half the fun of it!

@Iszi Sometimes he doesnt remember how old he really is. Half the time he doesnt know if he is believing his own lies.

2:55 PM
I think there are currently 2. This one was impounded by UK military - by parking fire engines fore and aft
@Iszi my claims don't fluctuate. I just rarely correct others claims
hang on - I have photo or vid of the Antonov

@RoryAlsop There are two, but only one is aircapable

The two folks I was with are two of the assistants at Fairford Royal International Air Tattoo - so they tend to be well up on this stuff
@LucasKauffman ok
that saves me getting anxious about who is wrong
this is the airworthy one then

the other one was never completely finished, I think they recently started a project at Antonov to see if it's feasable to make the second one airworthy again
I love transport planes

The sheer noise and lumbering take off was astonishing

@RoryAlsop the maximum take-off weight is also insane

2:59 PM
@LucasKauffman Why, 'cause Boeing wouldn't custom-build a 747 for them?

and I think it still needs less space than the A380 to take off
@Iszi Cold war

@LucasKauffman And yet they seemed to be able to duplicate the Shuttle rather well.

@RoryAlsop Have you visited Sinsheim?

@RoryAlsop That would be a sight to behold. I'd love to see one of those one day.

3:02 PM
@Iszi the Russians did copy it, they also made a copy of the C130, called the AN-12. On the other hand the brittish copied the concorde of the Russian TU-144
I always wanted to jump out of one
I think that if the AN225 does a jump run, the first person would almost already have packed his shute by the time the last one jumps out
I still think one of these beasts is super beautiful:

@LucasKauffman I still don't understand why they needed to build the largest aircraft in the world to carry their shuttle, while we just had to slap a couple of hardpoints on top of a 747 to carry ours. I think theirs may have just looked like a copy of ours. It may have really been built out of lead, concrete, and wrought iron.

hahaha, that is ridiculously likely.

@Xander It actually flew to space, so probably not (although the entire bottom of a space shuttle and the buran are made of stone tiles). Probably more a reason of "we can build a bigger one than you"
In all faireness the Russians were a lot better than the Americans when it comes to designing and creating helicopters and airplanes in the late 70's and early 80's :p

@LucasKauffman Not stone...Carbon carbon. Same as the brakes on an F1 car.

@Xander cerramic
not carbon :p
but it's also a mystery why they didn't just use the AN124 because the thing can load almost twice the weight of a 747

3:12 PM
@LucasKauffman Ah, yes, I see carbon carbon is only used on the nose cone, gear doors, and wing tips. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_thermal_protection_system
Though it was all the thermal tiles, but I guess not.

meh I should have become a pilot, I might still get my PPL one day though

bored

@kalina clean out your closet
anything that's not jammies gotta go

@LucasKauffman you should. I keep meaning to. When I get time

3:28 PM
@Xander Turtles, definitely turtles.

@RoryAlsop It's the same why I stopped skydiving, I just don't have the time anymore :(

@LucasKauffman I need to take up skydiving at some point
and get a pilots license

I can be the pilot.
But I must warn you that my philosophy would still be #yolo.

one of my goals is take off in a plane, fly over a lake, skydive out of the plane in to the lake and scuba dive to shore

@AJHenderson So you want to be G.I. Joe?

3:35 PM
@Kisunminttu yes, but without people shooting at me
and perhaps less shooting back

@AJHenderson that would be rather expensive if you have to leave your gear :p. Before they used to do it in Belize

Looks like there's an #antiyoloer in this room, I wonder who it is.
Those people sicken me.

@LucasKauffman I'd have support for it. Like a copilot so the plane can land and a boat waiting to get the parachute after I am done with it
@Simon how so?
did I miss my chance to validate a flag?

I got kicked for yoloing.

@Simon that's fine, I want my pilot to be 100% aware of his mortality and be nice and careful

3:41 PM
@kalina what do you care if your intent is to jump out of the plane anyway?

You're doing it wrong though, it has to be when I hastag the fuck out of it.

I don't intend to yolo out of the plane

@AJHenderson you must be shitting tons of money :p

yo
lo

@LucasKauffman there is a reason it is still a goal

3:45 PM
#

loyoyoloyolololoyolo

@Simon close enough
:)

I disapprove of these kickings

wait, did kalina just stick up for simon

@AviD Please teach @AJ when it's appropriate to kick me, thanks.

3:47 PM
@AJHenderson no I stood up against mod abuse
while in this instance it resulted in me sticking up for simon
2
that was not my goal or my aim

@kalina but it still happened

ultimately, it's your fault

@kalina so I'm your match maker now?

ew

@AJHenderson no, you are the individual who kicked a poor defenceless maple syrup worshipper
he's not intelligent enough to defend himself

3:49 PM
@Simon btw, I only claim credit for the last one, not sure who the previous ones were

DID SOMEONE SAY MAPLE SYRUP?
5

probably just thought chat was bugging out
I hope you can live with yourself after essentially stamping on a disabled child's face
3

I'm not that disabled.

oh, I'm sorry, I forgot we're meant to spell it out when you're around since you can't spell it but you recognise the word when we say it

wat

3:53 PM
wat

Paint me in red and paint me in orange

no

You're mean.

you are not a dutch football fan that has been glassed

Hey, @Simon

3:54 PM
don't say hi to him!

Hello @Kisunminttu

What's red and smells like blue paint?

@Kisunminttu Red paint?

My mom?

Now he's never going to leave

3:55 PM
@Iszi You are correct, my good sir. @Simon , I have some bad news about your intelligence...

NOTHING NEW HERE

@Kisunminttu Oh, that's not news.

Gawd, finally found some music that I can listen to while I'm cleaning.

Nope... We've known that for ages

ily2 @kalina
SYKE

3:58 PM
Np

whoops she's gonna unleash her fury soon

@AJHenderson I did do a few beach jumps though, it's really fun ^^

4:14 PM
@Simon: taunts @kalina

@kalina: destroys Canada in fire

Jeanette Daniels Benziger: "This charcoal forest is a lovely winter walk and I will recommend it to my uncle."

Possibly my new favourite meme
Reference: cake storm theconcourse.deadspin.com/…

My poor Canada

@RoryAlsop I now just point people to that article rather than explaining why I don't read comments on the Internet.

@RoryAlsop owww man I want cake now! DAMN YOU!! :))

@TildalWave Well you can't have that one, because nobody knows how long to freeze the numbers for, and you're a stupid liberal republican commie for asking.

Republicans 4 lyfe

4:21 PM
@Adnan , you around?

Hahahaha @xander
Today is the first time I actually read down the threads.

@RoryAlsop Oh, it's amazing.

@Xander it's simpler than freezing the numbers first actually ... you use colored marzipan for the number, place all of it upright and pour the raw dough in the baking tray covered with cling foil... shake a bit so it settles, remove the foil and bake, then cut the top so it's flat, and finish it off with decor and cream
marzipan won't rise anyway, but it will want to sink to the bottom, so what you do is use the part you cut off the top and place it under

4:42 PM
@Xander you forgot to add "redneck nurd" to the list :P
one other way ... bake normal cake dough ... make a cookie cutter shaped in number 5 ... cut out the middle by pressing the cookie cutter through its length ... take out the middle, use food colors on the middle, wait so it soaks them in, place it back in.

5:01 PM
working
and I hope you like working too

hey @Kisunminttu got a lizard pic for you..

@RоryMcCune That is fantastic, thank you so much! Say hi if he's near you
@RоryMcCune And that's a sneaky selfie you took! :)

@Kisunminttu heh will do, we'll see him at the conf. dinner tonight I reckon :)

I like the owasp shirt this year. Sad I didn't get to go.
For the swag and for the event
:-)

5:16 PM
@RoryAlsop yeah event is going pretty well so far, talks have largely been good, caught up with some peeps. Lots of mobile talks, but then i guess we'd expect that at the moment..

@RоryMcCune It's the cloud of security

@kalina You need to get a hobby

I have a hobby: typing "bored" into chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/151/the-dmz

@kalina You need to get a better hobby

:(
you just hate me and wish I was dead

Like, say, for example brutal axe murdering.

6:09 PM
I shall commit murder and then write "Stack Exchange made me do it" in the victim's blood

@kalina If that were true why would I ever engage in conversation?

to taunt me and push me over the edge

If I wanted to push you over a bridge I'd just walk up and shove you into the river.

I... what?

Did I hear something about a bridge game? Can I play?

6:13 PM
@Xander Sure, entrance fee is $5

@DavidFreitag What's that in dogecoin?

@Xander ~200K

@DavidFreitag That sounds like a lot. What's that in Chinese Yuan?

@Xander About ¥32

How about togrogs?

6:17 PM
@DavidFreitag Still a lot. How about in Great British Pounds?

@Xander Just a few p short of 3£

@DavidFreitag That's more like it.
Can I pay you in US dollars?

@Xander I only accept Vietnamese Dong. That'll be 110000â‚« please.

@DavidFreitag How about a box of Hostess Ding-Dongs instead?

woops. off by a factor of ten. goddamn decimal points.
@Xander Sold! To the man with the delicious sugar cakes.
Also you have a box of Ding-Dongs.
That helps too.

6:25 PM
@DavidFreitag Why was it that @kalina wanted to play bridge anyway?
I hadn't pegged her for an old-peoples card-games type.

@Xander I dunno. Something about axe murder or something.

@DavidFreitag Ah, ok. That makes sense.

rep capped <o/

6:53 PM
I love it when visual studio just up and crashes right in the middle of something

@DavidFreitag It's been years since I've had Visual Studio crash.

@Xander It doesn't happen often, but when it does it's right in the middle of a build.

Getting spam links that time out these spammers need to put some money into their bandwith ;p (dont worry I do have javascript plugins and cookies disabled)

I never get any spam emails. Unless of course you consider TI/Xilinx/Altera as spam.

How do you invest money in bandwidth stolen from computers in a botnet?

7:05 PM
@Simon If you know the person's name you can buy them better service, duh.

lulz

@Simon for a second I though it was a google timeour screen phising... but after checking with chromes debug tools it had actually timed out ;p
o.O I just found my old TRS-80

@Nick Nice

Debating if I want to power it up or if itll blow up in my face

Only one way to find out.
LEEEEEEROOOOO-pszzzzzzzzt

7:15 PM
LEEEEROOOOOYYYY ... POWA

it never ceases to amaze me how many things bombard a public internet server constantly

@Nick You should take a look under the hood and see what modifications you can make. Like a modern ARM frontend.

happened to be looking through my security logs and looking at the thousands upon thousands of invalid login requests I get every day
it would seem that "a" is a popular username

@AJHenderson or this: "HEAD /.ssh/id_dsa HTTP/1.1" 404

my relatively obscure server gets hit once or twice a second on average with a login attempt
the vast majority of which are obviously dumb bots trying the same 6 basic passwords for a dictionary list of user names

7:20 PM
I wonder if the same is true for my server that is sitting doing nothing.

@AJHenderson I have setup a server on my DMZ with root password 123 and waiting to see what happens ;p

sadly, it looks like what I was looking for in the logs continues to elude me though
for some reason, every few months my server just decides it is tired. It stops answering most network requests, most services fail, but serial console shows it just chugging along with what appear to be ok resource levels despite having system errors indicating that services didn't have sufficient resources to continue
simple reboot fixes it
but can not for the life of me figure out what is actually happening

"If large chunks of time (more than 5 minutes) are unaccounted for in a log file while the machine was running, it is a safe bet something has happened that someone didn't wish to be seen." - ubuntus didijustgetpwned guide.... because there should obviously be a log entry every 5 mins

@Nick well there certainly is on my server

@AJHenderson im talking about syslog

7:25 PM
ah
yeah, that would be less common

@AJHenderson excluding the boot log my syslog is less than 50 lines per day

mine is higher than that, but still routinely has gaps of 30 minutes +

Im too paranoid about my desktop getting pwned lately idk why

cuz unurd

8:01 PM
hi
forget about "5 mins" they just mean anomalies

@Iszi ODV?

ooooh android 4.4.4 update. heeeeeeelz yea

@DavidFreitag Does it have a name yet?

8:22 PM
@AJHenderson I once had an idea to run a fake SSH service on port 22 that accepted any username and password, and then piped all communication to an ELIZA-style chat bot.
> whoami
Who do you think you are?
that kind of thing
> cat /etc/passwd
Tell me more about this cat.

mail <spam>
Sorry what? could you repeat that?

8:41 PM
@tylerl I'd vote for it!

/me is desperately trying ot find an hdd case that has SATA output -_-

@Kisunminttu No it's still kitkat. It's just a security/bug patch

dammit, did I miss @DavidFreitag saying he only wants Japanese dong??

@AviD Vietnamese Dong.

ah yeah. How is that better, exactly?

8:47 PM
It's correct?

@DavidFreitag I dont know man, either way you still just asking for dong.

@AviD What can I say? I'm a collector.

@DavidFreitag :( well that's boring.

@Kisunminttu I know :[

@Kisunminttu SECURITY FIXES ARE NOT BORING!!!
Even if they don't have a fancy name.

8:52 PM
@Xander SOME OF THEM ARE
WHY ARE WE SHOUTING?

@tylerl WHY NOT!?

I LOVE LAMP

@Xander BECAUSE HOLDING DOWN SHIFT WHEN TYPING IS ANNOYING!!?!???!!!

@DavidFreitag GET A ROOM

@Xander I KILLED A GUY WITH A TRIDENT

8:53 PM
@Xander Hey, man, take it easy. You think @Adnan hasn't taught me to appreciate security fixes?

@tylerl There's a fix for that. They've invented a newfangled key they call "caps lock." Check your keyboard. If you're bleeding edge, you might have it.

Yes they are

@DavidFreitag The rendering engine in IE? Yeah, I can see how that might happen....

@Xander I think I remapped it to something useful

The girl in me likes fancy new names. The same thing that makes me gravitate towards laundry detergent in a pink packaging, rather than green or blue.
@Xander CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
6

8:55 PM
@Kisunminttu You have a small female trapped inside of you? Oh god?!

@DavidFreitag That is such a disturbing and creepy mental image.

@Kisunminttu Aww. So when are you due?
2

@tylerl Ha....And, that's actually not a bad idea.

@Kisunminttu Now you understand what you just did to me.
